Scandalous, Presidential Politics, Affordable Housing, Mobile and Manufactured Homes

December 17th, 2018 Comments off

Affordable housing, working and middle class incomes are far from a new issue.  They have been part of the national scene in the U.S. for decades, as this brief recap and linked reports will serve to outline. And sexual or other scandals have arguably often taken those long-pressing issues for the masses hostage.

For the big three networks, an “average of 22.4 million Americans watched the evening news last week,” per a recent December report on Adweek.  The graphic below suggests another 5.4 million watch one of the top 3 cable news networks. If one considers the other business news, and lesser watched ‘national’ cable channels, perhaps 30 million (+/-) tune in to someone’s news program weekday evenings, out of a the estimated 2018 United States population (February 2018) of 327.16 million, per U.S. Census Bureau figures.

So a small minority of Americans tune into news.  That is no doubt fine for those who would prefer to do their work with the least possible level of public scrutiny.

Award-winning investigative journalist Sharyl Attiksson’s media bias chart is useful in sorting out the agendas behind various headlines and news sources.

The highpoint for pre-HUD Code mobile home industry was achieved during the presidency of Richard M. Nixon. For two years, as the new home shipment chart below reflects, production soared passed 500,000 units a year. Those sales levels were supported by policies that provided Veterans Administration (VA) backed lending on mobile home loans, perhaps some emergency housing orders, and other encouragement from the federal government.

What was accomplished previously in sustainable shipment levels, can clearly be done again. Graphic by Skyline Champion (SKY), commentary by MHProNews.

The scandals of Watergate brought down the presidency of Richard Nixon (R). In the video posted, mention is made of the role of how opposition research was used by Nixon and his allies against Senator Ted Kennedy (MA-D). For more on Nixon and mobile homes, and the emergence of the federal construction, safety, and energy that became the HUD Code for manufactured housing, click the linked report below.

Help Others “Get It” – Loans on “Mobile Homes” Promoted by Another U.S. President

The presidency of Gerald Ford (R) was brief, but not without its influence on the transition from mobile homes to manufactured housing. A literal and metaphorical stumble caused Gerald Ford to lose to Jimmy Carter. For insights into President Ford’s roll in the transition from Mobile to Manufactured Homes is accessed by clicking on the linked box below.

U.S. President Praised “The Mobile Home Industry,” Manufactured Homes are “Here to Stay”

President Jimmy Carter’s (D) brother Billy had his shares of embarrassing moments. But the curated video Scandalous points to the effects of ‘Ted’ or ‘Teddy’ Kennedy at Chapaquidick bridge that may have been the difference between Carter losing to Republican Ronald Reagan (R). For some points on the Carters and manufactured housing, see the linked report, below.

President Jimmy Carter Blasts Trump Administration on Affordable Housing, Carter’s Manufactured Home Ties

We’ve noted previously on the Daily Business News on MHProNews how the President Bill Clinton (D) era ushered in the passage of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA), which in the new home shipments graphic shown is the most ‘modern’ part of the manufactured home industry’s history.

Affordable Housing, Manufactured Homes, Bipartisanship, Bill, Newt, Sexual Scandals, and You

The Clinton era also gave us the sad turn of the phrase from Clinton operative James Carville. It was all done to distract from Clinton’s sexual scandals.

“Drag a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park, you never know what you’ll find,” James Carville, Clinton Strategist

Some don’t like to admit it, but every administration for decades has had its share of real and/or manufactured scandals. It’s bipartisan.

But affordable housing ought to be non-partisan.  The case for manufactured housing ought to transcend partisan lines.  Which is why it is worth noting that the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) does its work with no PAC, while the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) has its MHI PAC.

The video that follows is an interesting look at how scandals, past or more recent, have often hobbled presidents. In the case of Senator Ted Kennedy (MA-D), his scandal kept him from becoming president.  These events in turn thus influenced policies, including those related to incomes and affordable housing.  The video walks through several administrations, adding flavor and context to some of the linked information above and below.

Investors and professionals should be mindful of just how rapidly affordable housing can be ramped up with contemporary manufactured homes. The example of Rollohome is an ever-timely reminder – linked in the box below – because if that builder went from start-up to 60,000 homes in 2 years, it can most certainly be done again.  Arguably, it should be better, because we now have the federal standards known as the HUD Code for manufactured homes and the MHIA of 2000.

Rollohome, Creating 60,000 Factory-Built Homes in 2 Years

Before a younger generation thinks that there were no big allegations, concerns, dirty politics, and scandals prior to our time, the video above yields interesting insights by using numerous clips from the respective eras, mixed with commentary by the people who lived it.  That’s this morning’s “News through the lens of manufactured homes, and factory-built housing,” where We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News , analysis, and commentary.)

Take One – Data Driven U.S. Outlook in 2019 and MHVille

November 23rd, 2018 Comments off

Propaganda works, but facts matter. In this take one on the 2019 outlook, we will focus on facts and evidence.

There are talking heads on cable news, in print or digital mainstream news media, who for some months have ‘talked down’ the U.S. economic forecast. Among their false claims is that the economic surge is a “sugar high” following the tax cuts, and that the high is about to play out.

The crash – a recession, they wrongly claim – is just ahead.

But what some call TrumpOnomics is actually American Economics 101. Prior presidents from each major political party, working with Congress, have enacted similar measures to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The prior performance was good, just as it is this time too.

In the first 2 graphics below, are the latest numbers from the U.S. Treasury Department. After the tax cuts, there was an initial drop in federal revenues, which are part of the historic norm.

Note that now, less than a year after the tax cut went into effect, we already have more federal tax revenue than at any time in the nation’s history.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, coupled with prudent deregulation, have already produced an economic boom. It is hiking taxes that creates a short term surge in dollars into federal coffers, followed by a dip in government revenues. Why? Because businesses that can, will move to a lower tax state or nation. Capital can be fluid, or to pardon the pun, Capital is Mobile.

The U.S. stock markets have been in flux for reasons that are too detailed for this report, but headlines are among the factors that have always had some measure of influence on investors. False headlines – misleading or ‘fake news’ – can and does move investors and thus the markets.

For example, headlines about Cavco Industries has contributed to a sharp drop in that company’s stock’s value. ICYMI, see that report linked below.

Hedge Fund’s Cavco Move, and More from Inside MHVille

The federal deficit is high, but has been since former President George W. Bush (R) helped create a new entitlement in his so-called “compassionate conservatism. ”  The 43rd president for whatever reasons also plunged the nation into Middle Eastern conflicts which are now the longest U.S, overseas foreign wars. Then President Barack H. Obama (D) kept those costly foreign wars going, and while reducing troop commitments in certain zones, the 44th president actually expanded military action into Libya and other nations too.  Poor strategic policy in the Obama years in Iraq helped spawn the rise of ISIS, and the war over the ‘caliphate’ in Syria was on.

Furthermore, Mr. Obama spilled trillions of dollars in red ink, the most of any U.S. President in American history. ObamaCare, various economic stimulus programs, and tax hikes – all led by Democrats – doubled the national debt in only 8 years. These are nonpartisan facts, and are among the reasons this publication is fundamentally not aligned with either major party.

It is entirely possible that if enough talking heads and negative news are accepted or ‘bought into’ by enough business and investment professionals, that the U.S. economy could slip in 2019. The forecast for the final quarter of 2018 may already reflect that potential. But the simple facts are that the initiatives of President Donald J. Trump, under the able advice or experts like former President Reagan official, Larry Kudlow and others, are working.

As the Daily Business News on MHProNews has noted previously, Democratic President John F. Kennedy and Republican President Ronald Reagan, a Republican who was previously a Democrat, each cut taxes during their administrations. In each case, revenue initially dipped, but then surged in their wake.

The reasons are American Economics 101. The best way to grow the economy is demonstrably to allow a maximum level of economic activity in the hands of individuals and business. There are exceptions to the rule, which includes the harmful economic impact of monopolies on business and the nation.

President Donald J. Trump ordered his cabinet to return to him planned cuts in their respective budgets. That is the other side or the ‘tax and spend’ equation. If a divided Congress cooperates enough, the prior harmful policies in the past 16 years can continue to have necessary adjustments that could continue the natural economic boom that the nation is experiencing.

The Takeaways for the U.S. and MHVille

It is absolutely possible that an ongoing flow of negative media, from either or both sides of the left-right media divide, could cause economic confidence among consumers and businesses to fall. That’s not unlike misinformation about manufactured housing being a harmful drag on our industry. In a similar way, repeated misinformation about the federal budget and the economy could in time harm consumer confidence, and thus economic activity.

It is also possible for a Democratic House to throw a monkey-wrench into the gears. Time will tell what happens.

So while there is no knowing with certainty how harm much negative media or politically harmful economic moves in the House may cause the U.S., the normal economic trends would be good from the Trump Administration Tax Cuts and Regulatory Rollbacks. But manipulation in the form of bad news, and bad policies – if widely believed – could spook investors, owners, and consumers.

Finally, the correct moves in local markets by individual manufactured home companies can still produce record growth, given the strong and growing needs for affordable housing. But as UMH President and CEO Sam Landy has said, those marketing efforts going will have to be done by individual businesses. That means, at the local market level(s). Why?

Because the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and Clayton Homes have both demonstrably failed in their efforts on their respective manufactured home industry image related ‘campaigns.’

Clayton Homes “New” Image Campaign, Surprising Facts Behind Have it Made Stigma Attacking Video

The race for 2020 in the U.S, is already underway. And sadly, the attempts to manipulate facts by various interest groups has been and will continue to be a strategy deployed against everyday Americans. That’s why a questioning mind, one ground in facts and that seeks the truth over emotionally manipulatable habits, are so crucial in the days ahead.

That’s also why our growing audience of pro-growth industry professionals craves news with analysis that helps cuts through the noise of agenda-driven special interests.

Presidents, Protest Groups, Update on Plot to Disrupt MHI Annual Meeting in Orlando

July 21st, 2017 Comments off

I’ve been protested before,” the corporate president said to MHProNews. “That doesn’t scare or bother me,” the caller said in reaction to the report, linked here.

MHProNews previously reported on the “All Parks Alliance for Change,” “Mobile Justice,” a photo taken at the Minnesota state capitol protest that activist group held. To see that prior story, click here or the image above. The leader of that particular group is one of those mentioned in more detail below.

Other manufactured home industry business and association professionals who called or messaged MHProNews about the notice that one or more left-wing resident groups were mulling disruptive activities were not as enthusiastic.

Several were leery about being caught up in the middle of – as one said – “bull horn toting, sign-carrying picketers,” press, and TV cameras.

But one party was more cynical, and clinical. “C’mon! They may protest means they may not too.”

Sources and Methods

Sources and methods for this Daily Business News report need to be carefully presented:

  • to be accurate,
  • useful to professionals discerning meeting and travel plans,
  • and which may also serve to disrupt the alleged disrupters.

At a minimum, as one professional noted, the element of surprise is gone for both left-wing resident group activists, as well as for those who may want to brave photographers with print media, and TV cameras — that follow in the wake of those anti-business minded protesters.

One of several fine points, per sources that tipped MHProNews, suggest is that the protest groups could use live streaming video themselves. They would certainly “milk any and all media” or self-generated coverage “for years to come after the MHI Orlando event.”

A simple check of activist resident group websites underscored the wisdom of that comment.  Some examples, will be seen below.

Revelations, Allegations, and An Exclusive Update from Activists

It is unclear if Communities for Change will or won’t be part of the alleged plot to disrupt the MHI meeting. What is known from a direct communication with this group is that they suggested to MHProNews that MHAction be contacted for information. To see a previously published story on how Westin and Borden teamed up using media in an attempt to discredit industry community operations, please click the photo above. Note that MHProNews debunked key elements of their media-driven claim.

MHProNews has verified directly with one such group that a steering committee has – or must – meet to further discuss just such a protest at MHI’s annual meeting in September in Orlando.

In follow ups to that same group, they have issued a “no further comment” statement.

Another group directly contacted has not yet replied.

That is not uncommon with that second organization. That group previously has replied at times, but at other times remain mute – as they know from experience that MHProNews and MHLivingNews are pro-Industry, pro-Consumer trade media that has actively debunked anti-industry claims for years. Two recent examples of this trade media platform defending the industry from unjust attacks are linked here and here.

For the response from Jonathan Westin’s organization, see the caption below his photo.

Insider Insights into ‘Splits’ Within Left-Wing Activists Resident Groups

Sources inform MHProNews that MHAction and NMHOA have a “split” when it comes to their respective “styles.”

MHAction, sources say, sees itself as more aggressive than long-time Ishbel Dickens led NMHOA.

For Ken Borden’s MHAction, per that source to the Daily Business News, NMHOA is “not aggressive enough.”

There are other resident groups that have done such ‘media magnet’ protests before, at their respective market levels.

What is unclear from information presently at hand is if – or how many of those more local groups – may be interested in leaving their normal theaters of operation, to step onto a national stage in Orlando.

That it could happen is suggested, sources say, by the emergence of Dave Anderson at NMHOA – see more on that – further below.

Disruption – Not Chess, Pinball

Tony, don’t think about these activists as chess players,” said one professional. “They absolutely have strategies, but it is more three dimensional than two. Think pinball. Disruption that gains favorable media attention for their cause – in their minds – that’s already a victory.”

That source wasn’t justifying the activist groups; rather it was an insight into their trouble-making, grab-attention worldview.

A comparison was also made by said professional between the types of protests one has seen in the U.S., pre-Trump Administration, and the far more virulent – and sometimes, violent – protests that have spring up this year, thanks in part to George Soros, and similar leftist-minded, funding sources.

Protest Group Profiles

We will provide 3 basic snapshots – self-descriptions and media headlines – of those who have been activist leaders against the business interests in the MH finance, and MH community sectors of the industry.

No particular order of importance should be construed from the 3 names listed below.

  • Ken Borden
  • Ishbel Dickens
  • David “Dave” R. Anderson

Ken Borden – Snapshot

Each of these spotlighted individuals and groups has a proven track record of protests, and being media savvy. As the graphics and links below reflect, MHI has been ‘caught off guard’ before with far less dramatic incidents than the ones such seasoned protesters are allegedly plotting.

Ishbel Dickens – Snapshot

HUD’s Belated, Blustering “Promotion” of Manufactured Homes

Democrat supporter and HUD’s manufactured housing program director Pam Danner at right, and Ishbel Dickens in center, in a HUD photo, shown under fair use guidelines. The political preference of Theresa Payne is unknown. Text and collage credits,  Note stating someone’s politics should be construed as a fact, nothing more or less. MHProNews readers span the political spectrum — including those who could care less about politics.

Ishbel Dickens has directly challenged MHI positions in several venues, as MHProNews has previously reported. One such venue, where MHI said they were blind sided, was at the Congressional Field Hearings, to see that story, click here or the image above. Dickens and NMHOA colleague, Carla Burr, were part of the PBS News report that was harmful to manufactured housing and communities.  See that report, linked here. MHProNews has led-the-charge that debunked several of that group’s claims, but they are tenacious. Note their ties with CFED, Prosperity Now…others?

David “Dave” R. Anderson – Snapshot

As noted above in red, Dave Anderson of NMHOA was active in the MN based All Parks Alliance group, which staged the protest shown in the photo at the top.

An industry source stressed to MHProNews, that readers should note that not all resident groups are made up of radical political leftists. Some are interested in bridging gaps, another topic, another time – but that point is mentioned here for a balanced understanding of the various groups themselves.

For specific examples, some state associations work with various levels of effectiveness with resident groups in their states.

MHI Security and Countermeasures?

Those professionals who asked MHProNews about MHI’s plans, if any, to deal with protests and disruption were referred to MHI.  Note MHI has not opted to share a comment on this matter.

The original picture is of an actual protest against a manufactured home community operation — a mock up to illustrate what has happened, and part of what could – per sources – be coming in Orlando in September. As one source suggested, it should not be thought that the limits of what the protesters might do is what is shown above; as political leftist groups outside of MH have grown more aggressive and even violent in 2017.  MHI Logo is provided under fair use guidelines.

Some callers asked or spoke about other MHI related items.  But those are beyond the scope of this potential threat of protests at MHI’s annual meeting in Orlando focused report.

Disclosures, Experience and Insights

This writer lived in a larger land lease community (several hundred sites) that had an activist protest group that was routinely able to get the local, anti-community owner media coverage they craved.

That location’s owner historically took the ‘no comment’ approach with the press. Thus, all of the coverage was slanted against that operation…

…until an alternative method and counter-plan was developed.

Those NMHOA linked-activists were listened to, a meeting attended, and parties involved were later addressed directly by this writer.

An alternate, indirect method of addressing both resident concerns and the media was established. Protest coverage by local media was no longer one-sided.

Over a period of several weeks, that engagement and countermeasures resulted in the activist numbers going from close to 100 attending their meetings, to their numbers dwindle down to single digits attending.  Only a handful afterwards were participating in their picketing and media actions, during the time this writer was involved in and led that effort.

That hardcore local version of NMHOA group remained, but the decreased level of protest, the shift in the overall resident population view, all proved useful with local media.

It was also good for generating new home sales, which protesters otherwise had previously hampered.

Those kinds of ‘disrupt the disrupters’ strategies have not been requested by MHI, who’s own ‘no comments’ approach, is unlikely to ask – or listen? – based upon their own recent patterns of problematic activity.

FrankRolfeNegativeArticlesOnIndustryNoCommentbyManufacturedHousingInstituteMHIRVHorizonsMobleHomeUniversityPostedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsOther successful experiences of working directly with residents, to defuse anger, and turn them into satisfied promoters could be related.

CFED Turned Prosperity Now

If MHI is serious about passing their bill, then it would be wise to come to grips with operations such as Prosperity Now, which is pro-manufactured housing, but opposes much of the MHI agenda. To learn more, click the image above.

Yesterday the Daily Business News reported on the former CFED, which has rebranded as Prosperity Now.

They are using a different activist approach.

While they have not replied for comments on if they plan any direct level of involvement in an anti-MHI protest at Orlando, their recent actions offer a strong clue as to the kinds of issues that protesters that do attend are likely to raise.  Note too in the Ishbel Dickens graphic above the ties between NMHOA and CFED/Prosperity Now.

Borden’s History

Kevin Borden is already on record protesting Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS), and Frank Rolfe and company’s operations. MHProNews did a report – linked here – that debunked the thrust of those MHAction claims.

Prosperity Now is anti-the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act, and they will likely continue to beat the drum of certain industry lenders and operations who they deem to be engaged in – or wanting to do – what they call, “predatory lending.”

That report – which for MH Industry or Investor newcomers presents links plus facts that debunk Prosperity Now’s allegations – is linked here.

Further updates on the emerging elements of what sources allege are developing plans by left-wing activists to disrupt the MHI annual meeting in Orlando meeting will be made as warranted. ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Obamacare in the Crosshairs – What’s the President’s Plan?

April 14th, 2017 Comments off

Credit: KPFA.

In the ongoing battle surrounding Obamacare, its repeal and its replacement, President Donald Trump is utilizing skills and tactics made famous in his book “Art of the Deal.”

In interviews this week, including one with the Wall Street Journal, President Trump said that he’s exploring the idea of withholding key Obamacare payments, a move designed to get Democrats to the table to negotiate.

I don’t want people to get hurt,” said President Trump.

What I think should happen — and will happen — is the Democrats will start calling me and negotiating.”

The move by the President could throw insurance markets into chaos, which in turn could put Democrats in a position to deal on repealing the law.

At the heart of the matter are the payments themselves, known as cost-sharing reductions (CSRs). The payments reimburse insurers for giving discounted deductibles to low-income Obamacare enrollees.

House Republicans have sued over the payments, arguing they are unconstitutional without a congressional appropriation.

ObamaCare is a jobs killer as well as unpopular with tens of millions of voters. Double digit hikes are coming in 2017, if this bill isn’t repealed and replaced by a GOP president and Congress.

One prominent Democrat spoke out forcefully in response to the President’s proposed move.

President Trump is threatening to hold hostage health care for millions of Americans, many of whom voted for him, to achieve a political goal of repeal that would take health care away from millions more,” said Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.)

This cynical strategy will fail. Our position remains unchanged: drop repeal, stop undermining our health care system, and we will certainly sit down and talk about ways to improve the Affordable Care Act.”

President Trump has not said for sure whether he would actually seek to cancel the payments, or whether or not Congress should appropriate the money.

I might continue the payments so that I won’t be blamed for chaos in the system. That’s part of the reason that I may go the other way,” said President Trump.

The longer I’m behind this desk and you have Obamacare, the more I would own it.”

Credit: Liberty Juice.

While the suit from House Republicans is ongoing, President Trump could simply drop the defense of it and cancel the payments, which would likely result in insurers either spiking premiums or dropping out of the Obamacare market altogether.

Insurers are also pushing for more certainty, as they decide whether or not they will participate in Obamacare next year. Some Congressional Republicans have also called for appropriating the money, which could override any decisions from the Trump administration, and keep payments going.

A Real, Practical Solution for Healthcare?

The Daily Business News recently covered the story of Dr. Josh Umbehr of Atlas MD, discussing a potential “best option” for Obamacare repeal and replacement in terms of controlling costs and providing cost-effective services.

Umbehr’s co-op model has already been proven in their clinic, and in other clinics that are doing something similar. For additional insight on this plan and how it would work in combination with the proposed health plan from the Freedom                                 Caucus, MHProNews reached out to a respected MD about the concept.

Dr. David Murdock. Credit: Healthgrades.

I’ve always liked this type of practice. It doesn’t include hospital care or specialty care, but that could be covered by the catastrophic insurance with a large deductible,” Dr. David Murdock, a cardiologist from Wausau, WI, said to MHProNews when asked about this practice.

If I was a primary doctor, I would push this for my patients.”

Murdock explained that this proven medical care system was a case of back-to-the-future.

That’s actually a return to the way medical care was done in the years before Medicare and widespread insurance,” Murdock said. “It’s not new, it’s a return to how it worked well in the past.“

You can see the built in mechanism to contain cost,” said Murdock.

Modular Homes Competing in Solar Decathlon

August 13th, 2013 Comments off

Updating a story MHProNews posted April 17, 2013 regarding two Vermont schools competing in the U. S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon in California October 3-13, a send-off event is slated at the Statehouse in Montpelier for the teams and their modular homes Sept. 10. Two of only 20 student teams in the world to be accepted, Norwich University’s affordable home is designed to withstand the rigors of New England living and promote conservation, while Middlebury College’s modular focuses on reconnecting people with their communities while emphasizing environmental, economic and social sustainability. The winner of the competition will have best demonstrated energy conservation, affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence, according to State officials and presidents of both schools will offer remarks at the event.
