1) Who, What and Where: (Your name, and your role/job title at Rainmaker as well as any other industry roles, association positions, etc.).

Chad Carr of Rainmaker Software and Consulting.  I am officially the President of this second-generation family business, but with both of my parents still actively involved, we really all balance multiple duties.  Our company has been serving Retailers in the Manufactured Housing Industry since 1978 when my mother, Judy, started working for Dealer Magazine as the head of the Hardison Institute.  In addition to my work at Rainmaker, I am an active speaker and writer with a focus on teaching best practices to Independent Retailers in this and the other industries we serve.

In our previous column on this topic, I shared the results of a study that found 80% of all home buyers spend three months to a year or more doing research before they are ready to sit down and discuss their home purchase with a dealership or salesperson.  Regardless of whether they are looking for a Manufactured, Modular, Site Built or any other type of home, prospective customers are going to do research before they are ready to buy.   Add a comment

What do I mean by 'who' or 'what' in your manufactured or modular home company or organization?  Corporate culture is one of the significant driving factors that contributes to and determines an organization's success, profitability and position in the market place.  Corporate culture is the heartbeat of any enterprise.  It is: Add a comment

"Whooo-is there?" says the Owl.  Oh, good, it is you, dear reader, coming back to read Part 2 of my previous MHMSM.com article. Managing a manufactured home land lease community is no easy matter, but knowing how to properly navigate fair housing issues makes a difference.  Let's continue with the sometimes forced (I admit) analysis of fair housing issues from an avian perspective… Add a comment

Social media has blown on to the scene the last couple of years with the popular websites of Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google + and many others.  Nobody can tell for sure what social media will look like five years from now, but what everyone can agree upon is that the concept of using the internet to socially communicate is not going away. Last year when Dennis Hill and I first spoke about the return of the fabled indoor Louisville Manufactured Home Show in 2011, one of the many things that struck me was Dennis and the Showway's team practical, no-nosense approach.   Dennis knew the challenges.  "Tony, first we have to crawl, then we walk, then can we run.  This is our year to crawl."  The goal was to attract perhaps 850 or so retailers, community operators and dealer developers to this come back show. For about a year now, various state execs, business owners and seasoned industry veterans have taken part in discussing key aspects of the long overdue Industry Turn-Around plan.  The movement picked up speed early this summer. We have named this plan the MH Alliance/Phoenix Project.  The Phoenix Project name implies the rebirth of the Industry, using the mythical bird – the Phoenix – that rises from the ashes of apparent destruction.  The meaning of the MH Alliance will be expressed later on. You know what a boardroom is don't you? It's the room where all the heads of big companies meet and plan their future. These are the movers and shakers of the industry, the VIP's, CEO's, COO's and generally the  board of the corporation. These are the folks that are about as far away from the installation of a manufactured home – the crawling in the mud and stacking concrete blocks - as you can get. To be fair about it, some of them, especially the original owners and founders of the companies and their offspring may have done it but most board members these days have not, and of course they don't need to. Their time is much better spent thinking of the big picture, the stockholders and the next quarterly earnings, that kind of thing. Add a comment
