Will Hurricanes Irma, Jose Disrupt MHI’s Annual Event?

HeavyMiamiFloodingAPGettyManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNewsThe front edge of Hurricane Irma is just touching Orlando at 8 PM ET as this story is being drafted.  It may be hours or days before it is known the level of power outages or other damages that may cause a disruption of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) annual meeting. The early reports on those and other items follow below.

Estimates per sources to the Daily Business News for planned attendance at the Arlington, VA based annual event are in the 100 or more range, pre-Irma.

Disruption of Disrupters?

Ironically, Irma may disrupt the plans of anti-Preserving Access, anti-MHC protestors.  The Daily Business News has reached out to sources, which have not yet confirmed what impact, if any, the storm will have on the reported protestor turnout.

Irma’s Spawned Tornadoes

Fox News and others have reported that Irma has spawned some tornadoes.  This is one of several challenges caused by such a massive hurricane, that literally covers the state.

Hurricane Jose a Few Days Behind?

The Weather channel’s latest forecast is that Jose will stall out somewhere near the Bahamas.  While that can evolve, as Irma’s forecast did, it’s possible that rain will be the only impact of Jose on Florida.

Early Reports out of Naples

Preliminary reports out of Naples are flooding, downed power lines and some structural damage being reported. The full extend will be better known in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Early Reports out of Miami

As of this the time this is report is being drafted, an estimated 800,000 homes are without power in Miami’s metro, per Fox News. They are reminding viewers it could be days – perhaps weeks – before all power is restored.

Statewide, there are 2 million or more without power, per Fox as of 8:54 PM ET. CNN puts that total at 3 million without electric service.  Orlando is under a curfew until 6 PM Monday night.


Miami expects as much as 16 inches of rain by morning, which has resulted in flooding, as the featured image at top reflects.   5 of 31 cities in Broward County are under a boiled water order.

These incidents out of other parts of the state may or may not play out similarly in Orlando.  The MHI website provided no updates as of press time.  The site does say that after Sept 8th, no refunds will be issued.

Orlando Airport Closed, Re-opening Plans?

Orlando Airports tells MHProNews that “Hurricane Irma cancels all flights at country’s 13th busiest airport…” and that “the airlines are consulted to determine when best to resume operations.”  It will be around 2 to 4 pm, per news sources, when the storm hits the Orlando area.

(Update at 7:54 AM ET, Now over 6 Million reportedly without power, according to Florida Power and Light.)
