Work, Life Balance and MHVille, Monday Morning Manufactured Housing Meeting

November 12th, 2018 Comments off

It goes without saying that life is a series of marathons, not just a single sprint.

  • first home sale,
  • that first business deal,
  • that first new client,

are important. But once isn’t enough.  Repetition is critical for learning.  Systems that can more routinely produce the desired outcome are important too.  That’s a form of repetition too. How do you keep from burning out, and balance your life for long term sustained success?  We’ll take a brief look at that question via the new-for-you graphic below.

Work Life Balance

The work-life balance is a topic that gurus have talked and written about for years.

What our manufactured housing industry’s history sadly highlights is a trend that other industry’s have endured too.  There has been a long-standing, multi-decade struggle between larger firms attempting to ‘rig the system’ against smaller operations and the masses of Americans of all backgrounds.  They’ve done that by misusing politics, media, foundations, and other resources.

That’s not to say that everyone in those sphere’s are evil or corrupt, that would be as untrue as those who want to ignore the obvious reality that there is a level of corruption or “rigging of the system.”

What’s the solution?  Part of it is education, and a good work-life balance.

The Difference Between Free Enterprise and Crony Capitalism

Stop and think for a few moments. Why is it that some of the richest people in America claim to support candidates who often openly support socialism?

The idea of ‘free stuff’ is tempting to millions who have not learned the lessons once taught in junior high school.  “There is no such thing as a free lunch,” or TANSTAFL.

If socialism worked, North Korea wouldn’t have a basket case economy next to that of South Korea.

If socialism worked, the old USSR wouldn’t have fallen.

Warren Buffett and several of his peers know the value of history quite well. The free enterprise system helped make the wealthy, but they’ve also arguably abused the free enterprise system to get an edge over other smaller companies.

How is That Unfair Advantage Unwound?

The answer in part is educational, but it includes the proper work-life balance.  Some get nervous about talking about spiritual, faith-based or political matters.  Why?  It wasn’t that long ago that it was a common topic. Why was it turned by those who pull-the-strings behind the scenes into something that was “politically incorrect?”

The work life-balance wheel posted in this tip can be download, and posted in frame in your office.  There may not be another quite like it.

Every business needs a short, medium, and long-term strategy. For example, if political, civics and historic understanding is a once every 2- or 4-years brief event, then expect those who make it part of their long term strategy to gain an advantage.

As a business person or professional, you have to make your monthly overhead. That’s short term.  Miss that overhead often enough, and you’ll be out of business or bankrupt.

This week, several new reports will be mixed in with other news items that will underscore the need for a sustained, short-medium and long-term work-life balance.  Get a jump on it.  Your sustained success depends upon it.

BTW, if you look at the first ‘related report,’ linked below, and scan our headlines, you may notice something.  Virtually every week offers some level of ‘work life balance’ in our reports according to the principles spotlighted shown above.

Sunday Morning Manufactured Home Industry Research, Reports, Headline News Recap 7.8.2018 to 7.15.2018

July 15th, 2018 Comments off

Trivia note: that’s how the MHProNews home page looks like on that iPad screen, just moments before the Sunday Morning weekly recap is published. We do get typos, but we also sweat the details, all for thousands of industry readers like you.

Albert Einstein, Zig Ziglar, Martha C. Nussbaum, and Manufactured Housing

There are those who mistakenly think they don’t understand the value of an honest critique

But the truth is that we all know the value of objective analysis, because we all rate things – be they spoken, written, expressed by 1 to 5 stars, social media likes, and the critiques one keeps to oneself.

The manufactured housing industry stands at the edge of great potential. That’s the logic from various third-party factoids found on Saturday’s Daily Business News report, linked below.

Design by MHProNews.

How does a manufactured housing industry professional, advocate or investor best tap into the potential of manufactured homes during this raging affordable housing crisis?

In part, by understanding reality.

The ideal balance for achieving that reality check is SWOT.

The four quads of a good SWOT analysis. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats.

Part of SWOT is identifying threats and weaknesses. Those who only do cheer leading are arguably hobbling progress.

SWOT is a critical analysis, using a different phrasing.

It’s like an employee evaluation, the more objective it is, the better. After all, the principle is that one gets more of what we encourage, and less of what we discourage, right?

The truth or evidence can be disturbing, but usually it’s uncomfortable because it’s misunderstood, or due to someone being in denial.

No good parent or coach let’s a child or team mate keep making the same mistakes without guidance. No good doctor would fail to warn a patient about risks to life or limb.  All of those are examples of critiques.

The quotes from Martha C. Nussbaum, Albert Einstein, and Zig Ziglar are useful reality checks from respected minds, that come from a variety of disciplines.

For baseball or sports fans, Tony reminds me periodically of the Mickey Mantle quote shown.

What hall of famer Mickey Mantle said about baseball applies to manufactured housing too.

When an industry that has as much potential as manufactured housing has today  – and yet is still underperforming – there must to be objective reasons for it.

Objective analysis and critique are essentially for growing a business or location’s sales, and thus the industry to its potential.

The quotes shown remind readers that critique is useful, necessary, and – surprisingly! – positive, but only when it is properly viewed and understood.

On MHProNews, we hunt for, curate, and share information that’s designed to inspire superior performance for those who tune in, objectively think matters through, and thus ‘get it.’

With those insights and thoughts in mind, let’s dive into the headlines from the week in review.

Zombie Nation – the Awakening – Experts, & State of Manufactured Housing Industry, Nov 2017

November 29th, 2017 Comments off

ZombieNationManufacturedHousingIndustryNov2017MHProNewsA call from an executive in a manufactured home producing state shared some of the challenges a HUD Code or modular manufacturer faces today.

The executive laid out the higher ratios of addicts applying for work, he told the Daily Business News.

It wasn’t just the opioids, the executive said, which are more prevalent in the news this past year.

It was also those plagued by alcoholism, or other forms of chemical addiction.

He also noted the problem of low skills that were often applying. But it was the chemically dependent addicts who were less reliable, and more likely to quit; often without notice, that the executive focused on.

In another state, a top sales manager called MHProNews to discuss his view of the state of the Manufactured Housing Industry in 2017.

It’s oversimplifying it, Tony,” the manager said, “but it’s largely true. We see two different types of people here at work, and also among our customer base. There are those who turn to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism, and there are those who turn to faith in God.

I’ve seen and worked with high functioning addicts,” the sales manager said. “But more commonly, it’s the believer who hangs in, overcomes the learning curves and obstacles, to become successful.”

Manufactured Housing Advocate Tye’s Take

The Rev. Donald Tye Jr., manufactured housing industry advocate, factory-built home owner, professional and actively retired minister – left. At right, L. A. “Tony” Kovach, a still from a video interview including Tye, linked here.

The Reverend Donald Tye, Jr. told MHProNews about his experiences working with the addicted over the years.

Policies alone won’t do it, said Tye. “There has to be the realization that the appetite of the addict, the causes that drive the problem must be dealt with.

Educational deficiencies were another concern Tye addressed with the Daily Business News. It’s an issue raised by other industry professionals in private too, but isn’t discussed as much in public forums.

The polarization of the nation, and the lack of critical thinking are serious realities, Tye believes.

While a polarized public and voting blocks draw headlines routinely, the point made about fewer analytical thinkers, and fewer willing to listen to what another perspective may be are points Tye stressed.

It will be recalled that after the Charlottesville tragedy, the retired Rev. Tye took an active, goal-and-solution oriented part in the effort linked below on MHLivingNews.

“Seek First” a Post-Charlottesville Message of Healing and Principles for America

Addiction, and The Zombie Nation, by the Numbers

The facts bear out the concerns reflected by those industry connected professionals.

Citing their sources, Ashwood Recovery says that “According to reports, over 20 million people nationwide suffer from drug and alcohol abuse issues. Perhaps worse, the cost of treatment and incarceration run nearly $700 billion annually for taxpayers.”

While noting that the “The relationship between drugs and crime is complex,” some “80% of offenders abuse drugs or alcohol,” per the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD).”

Another Reflection of Education, Skills and the Zombie Nation

American Zombies can bleed cross all demographic groups.

But writing for the business journal Forbes, Caroline Beaton focused her gaze on the younger set, saying, “Millennial job seekers receive conflicting messages from employers and career advisors: on the one hand, we’re told robots will someday replace our technical skills, so why bother. On the other hand, we’re told hard skills are a hot commodity.”

Beaton gave examples. “Employers value technical skills, to be sure. But I asked more than 100 top HR managers, recruiters and CEOs which was more important for entry-level job seekers, and nearly all of them said soft skills.”

We look for candidates with a solid foundation of soft skills and trust so that the rest can be built upon it,” Emőke Starr, Head of HR at Prezi, said. Likewise, Wayfair’s Global Senior Director of Talent Management and Employee Development, Marcy Axelrad, said that Wayfair often doesn’t require entry-level candidates to “have the exact experience in the area for which she/he is interviewing,” per Beaton.

Traditional soft skills include leadership, communication and collaboration,” the Forbes writer stated.

When some 6 million jobs are open in the U.S. and going unfilled, one has to ask, where are the disconnects?

155 million Americans regularly play video games. 42 percent of Americans play for at least three hours per week,” according to Polygon.

Social networking already accounts for 28 percent of all media time spent online,” per the Huffington Post, adding “20% of social networkers say they are “addicted” to their sites.”

According to a Nielsen report, United States adults are watching five hours and four minutes of television per day on average (35.5 h/week, slightly more than 77 days per year),” states Wikipedia.

Zombies – Culture, Addiction and The Awakening?

Superficiality is the curse of the modern world.” said Matthew Kelly, a professional consultant known globally as a deeply spiritual businessman.

Too many tune out others too quickly, jumping to conclusions,” said industry consultant, service provider and the industry’s top publisher, L. A. “Tony” Kovach.  “When we quote perhaps the industry’s most known personality on the:

  • importance of learning from the lessons of history,
  • how the chains of habit can be hard to break,
  • the importance of long term plans, and
  • the value of reading, and critical thoughts,

those Warren Buffett sayings aren’t a cudgel. They ought to be pondered carefully, seen how they are applied, and those lessons should be taken seriously on their own merits,” said Kovach.

“Perverse”–Warren Buffett-Dodd-Frank, CFPB, Manufactured Housing, Loans, Independent Businesses Fact Check$

He added, “then they should apply Marty Lavin’s and others that we’ve quoted insights. To use Rev. Tye’s view, are enough people thinking objectively, and analytically?  What are the gaps that lead people into some form of habit or addiction?”

Tim Connor in post-election commentary stressed that whatever a person’s politics, the election was a signal that the nation wanted change,” Kovach said. “People on the left and right alike are talking about the cultural divide, not just about America’s political and economics canyons.”

When was the last time your favorite network or news source took a look at the last 10, 20 or 50 years,” Kovach said, “and asked, where have we been? What caused us to get here?  Where are we going?  How have public policies worked out for Americans?”

We need to be the coffee bean in Damon West’s life story, he said, willing to step out and be the change of the hot water around us.

To circle back to a key point of the MH sales manager, he and others clearly took faith into their work. It was among the undercurrents in the comments of manufactured and modular home retailers, producers, community and other professionals that MHProNews has heard from, or interviewed,

These are just some of the concerns readers and those we are interviewing for MHProNews or MHLivingNews are voluntarily telling us about. Many believe that faith in action – taken into the world of work, politics, and the world – will alone solve problems.  But as one professional put it, “there’s been a drum beat for years that tells us to compartmentalize your faith from work.  There’s a kind of politically correct censorship of all but secular ideas.”

There are numerous business professionals MHProNews has interviewed whose quiet faith makes them who they are.  But some are afraid to show it publicly.

Yes, some are laser focused on the bottom-line, and such issues are not mentioned.

But others who are profit-minded, are also socially, spiritually, and culturally minded too.

Without using the words, ‘zombie,’ or ‘awakening’ to the social realities they are describing, some are pointing to the practical consequences of decades of public policies, media, cultural, and social influences.  Some are very consciously pointing to the need for faith to return to main street.

For that builder, retailer, communities, or other service providers struggling to keep up with rising demand, the zombie nation’s impact on their workplace and professional lives are realities they are dealing with daily. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Monday Morning Sales Meeting – Living the Dream by Serving Others Well

November 20th, 2017 Comments off

MondayMorningManufacturedHousingMarketingSalesMnagementSalesMeetingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsYou can get everything you want out of life, if you help enough other people get out of life what they want.” Zig Ziglar.

Owners, managers, investors, and front-line sales professionals, that quote above is an important secret for manufactured housing (MH), or any other, career success.

Those who learn, earn, and return by serving others well don’t have to worry about who they bump into at the local Walmart, grocery story, church, place of worship, bank, credit union, or anywhere else.

The REAL ‘silver bullets’ for more success in MH are proper education, discipline, integrity, and motivation.

A Common Concern in MHVille Voiced to MHProNews by Industry Professionals

Several pros, often owners, executives, and others on the front lines of selling, have expressed concerns about the industry in general – in terms of a lack of proper sales training, for example – and certain factors regarding ‘unfair competition’ in specific.

Don’t whine or worry.  The solutions are to learn more,  to discover how to navigate the challenges, and thus do more.

In last week’s Monday Morning Sales Meeting 15-minute video seminar, you heard a national lender explain that he and others believe that sales skills are down among manufactured housing professionals from 15 or 20 years ago.

Manufactured Housing Monday Morning Sales Meeting: Finance & Industry Facts, Figures, Sales Tip$ Improving Best Practice$

Shipments are down too.  Coincidence?  That veteran, award-winning lender didn’t think so.  Experience reveals that properly motivated, and informed professionals do better than those simply waiting for someone to hand them a deposit check.

Education, ethics, and training are the answers for long term success.  See examples of serious professional opportunities for learning more, linked here and here.

Don’t Let Goliath Scare You…

But another concern is that with a group of a few companies that so dominates the industry, what can the independent retailer or community do to counter the advantages that company might have?

How can someone outperform those who lack ethics? Or those who have some seemingly unfair advantages? The truth, properly shared, will set you free.

Share as needed with others the power of third-party provided information. Here’s but one example…

Tips on Shopping for a New Manufactured Home

The article linked above provides a wealth of information that an independent operation can point a home shopper to with confidence.

Most sales trainers say, ‘You don’t throw your competitor under the bus.’

But why not help serious shoppers – who are on the fence, trying to decide for themselves what direction they should go – by providing a link to resources let to discover the truth for themselves?

Why not allow the serious shopper to make a more informed decision, based upon third-party research?  Give them the link, like the one above.  Then, let them decide what may be, or may not be, in their best interest. Common sense, right?

And isn’t giving that or other linked information the moral thing to do as well?  Just as ‘friends don’t let friends drive drunk,’ so too what caring business professional fails to give a sincere shopper the knowledge needed to make an informed decision?

The best resources for that are routinely third-party provided references.

Keep In Mind, Readers Are The Leaders

Remember.  To properly use a video, report, or any information, you and/or your team should know that story article, video, or report — backward and forward.

There is no need to push, rather, provide and guide as needed.

The lazy sales professional, is the hungry sales pro. Zig Ziglar’s brother, Judge Ziglar said, Timid Salesman Have Skinny Kids.”  You have to know what you know, and be willing to share it, the right way, at the right time, with confidence, calm, and composure.

When I first got into the MH sales business, the company I worked for had no formal training,” said L. A. “Tony” Kovach.

I read every industry article I could, plus books, etc. that I could on my own to learn the business.  As Zig Ziglar used to say, don’t use a loser’s limp.  Don’t give yourself an excuse for failure. Do all that you can to learn more, to serve others better, and thus pave the way to your success, through their success,” Kovach said.

15 minutes a day minimum on MHLivingNews and MHProNews can prove to be priceless for any sales person, manager, executive, owner, investor or others who deal with the public, officials, media, and others.

American author, salesman, and motivational speaker Hilary Hinton “Zig” Ziglar, who inspired millions, rubbed shoulders with U.S. presidents, and shared multiple stages other luminaries, died Nov. 28 in a Texas hospital of pneumonia at age 86, according to Wikipedia. A salesman for many years following his military service in World War II, he became vice president and training director for the Automotive Performance company in Dallas in 1968, and published the first of many books in 1975, See You at the Top, which had been rejected by 30 publishers. His curiousity about why some succeeded and others did not led to a thriving career as a sought-after motivational speaker, a role he maintained until two years ago. He attributed much of his success to his Christian faith and his wife, Jean. Some may see his words as corny or out-of-date, but according to a remembrance on National Public Radio, many recall a speech that made a huge difference in their lives. A featured writer for MHProNews, while we mourn his loss, fortunately we will continue to publish his wit and words of wisdom. Zig Ziglar: “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”
