Ultimate Victory

From what was seemingly the most humiliating defeat in earth’s history, to the most glorious triumph, all in the span of a few days.

That’s what a surprising victory looks like.

In the life of Jesus as recorded in the sacred texts, there is an episode that we could all identify with.

Jesus comes to the shore, and with Simon (Peter’s) permission, boards his boat. They push out from shore just a bit, and that wandering Jewish preacher begins to teach to the people listening. When he finished, to thank Simon, Jesus tells him and his crew to go out farther, and lower their fishing nets for a catch, because Simon and his companions were professional fishermen.

Here is how that episode reads in Luke chapter 5, from the English Standard translation from Bible Hub.  When Simon says “Master,” he is speaking to Jesus.

4And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.5And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Each of us at some point in almost any career one can imagine is about “catching people,” hopefully in a good sense of the term.

A close look at the evidence reflects that our industry is under assault from outside and in.  America is too. If you look at other nations, they likewise have their own woes.

But for those who believe and act upon that faith, the final victory is assured. That’s what this day called Easter and the recent historic events are all about. The rest are the details that makes every life on earth an adventure to be celebrated.

Some of those who resisted or opposed Jesus of Nazareth, or who followed Jesus in secret, went through that emotional roller coaster of His controversial life, Jesus dying a humiliating death, and then His rising from the dead. Some changed, others did not. That’s free will.

The forces of the Roman empire and the local leaders of that era looked to be all powerful.  But in the final analysis, they were not all controlling in the end, where they? The world order of that era was turned upside down by those events in that obscure outpost of a now long gone empire.

We at MHProNews don’t claim to have a script as to how the events in our industry and nation will play out. But we believe in that final victory.

Thus, we move on in faith, day-by-day doing reporting and analyzing what the evidence appears to the truth of a given matter.  We plan our moves, in faith. We may connect the dots of a specific event to the larger puzzling picture of the struggle for freedom our industry’s honest professionals merit.

We believe in our affordable manufactured homes, in free enterprise, and we oppose deceptively rigged systems. We believe in the God-given rights of the people. We believe in money honestly earned.

Yesterday, in the Jacksonville newspaper the linked item below was published. They chose the headline, as editors are permitted to do. But the copy was submitted by me. In 300 words, it flips the script on John Oliver.

A Victory? Residents Ruled to Be Renters

A scenario for a manufactured home community posed to the court of appeals in Saskatchewan, Canada provided an interesting answer.

If you own a manufactured home but rent the land on which it sits, are you legally a renter?

According to the court, you are.

Per the Regina Leader Post, the story began in 2014, when a new ownership took over Copper Sands – an 80 plus home community just east of Regina.

Soon after, the Rentalsman had complaints coming to its office from tenants about that new landlord, Copper Sands Land Corporation.

Rents were increased, maintenance issues were reported and one resident reported that they had been forced to sign an unconscionable rental agreement.

In each instance, the Rentalsman ruled in favor of each of those residents.

And then, the story took an interesting turn.

The landlord argued the Rentalsman had no jurisdiction to make those decisions, because those making the complaints owned their homes, while the landlord only owned the site on which they sat.

Because of this, a lawyer for the landlord argued the Residential Tenancies Act, which governs the Rentalsman, did not apply. Further, the complaints from residents needed to go to a higher court.

In winning, we’ve established a precedent that is good for all of the residents of all of the mobile homes [sic] in Saskatchewan, said Don Lussier, the president of the Copper Sands Tenant Association.

It is unfortunate that it took this long and this drawn out, and that the landlord originally took the position that the act didn’t apply.

After two-plus years of legal back and forth, the appeal court ruled at the end of January that the Rentalsman did indeed have jurisdiction over the residents.

I didn’t think the water was muddy to begin with,” said Lawyer Eric Marcotte, who represented some of the Copper Sands residents. Marcotte felt that there was never any ambiguity in the legislation.

The residents of Copper Sands pulled together to support the legal fees that came with having to argue their case at the appeals court. And, despite less than ideal circumstances, brought the community close together.

It’s certainly a financial strain on them. It’s not cheap to take a decision all the way to the Court of Appeal,” said Marcotte.

With the ruling in place, the complaints of those living in Copper Sands, many of which are unresolved, will now go to the Rentalsman.

As of this month, 50 of the 80 Copper Sands residents had claims before the Rentalsman office. ##
