Senate Democrat Specifically Urges Broader Manufactured Housing Lending, Bipartisan Approach to GSE Reform

Freshman Senator Tina Smith (MN-D) is drawing attention to the lack of implementation under the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (HERA) that established the federally mandated Duty to Serve (DTS) for manufactured housing.

Her letter to Republican and Democratic leaders of the powerful Senate Housing, Banking, and Urban Affairs Committee is covered in a new report, linked below on MHLivingNews.

The timing is noteworthy. Why? Because the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) has recently been calling for Congressional investigations into what they say is the flawed roll-out of DTS by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That too is linked below in our Sunday morning weekly news recap.

There are also insider insights from Cavco Industries regarding their legal woes.  That hot-linked headline is found further below on the Daily Business News on MHProNews.

That’s just for starters. There is the Havenpark’s controversy. Deprecation debate. Cavco, Carson, campaigns, CoreLogic, plus more are all below.

Toot the Horn

There is demonstrably no manufactured housing-focused Industry News, Tips, and Views Pros Can Use” © that is larger, more diverse, robust, or better-read in MHVille than this publication. Nothing else even comes close.

Perhaps that’s why early next week, insider insights at HUD will reveal exclusively on MHProNews a serious scandal that involves manufactured housing.

Stay tuned for that and more.

Small Industry, Big Potential, The Most…

As some U.S. Senators and members of Congress are beginning to grasp, the industry is only performing at about ¼ of the level that it did some 20 years ago. In 1998, production topped 372,000 new manufactured home shipments. So why – during a growing affordable housing crisis that many in Congress, the Trump Administration, and others want to see addressed – is manufactured housing underperforming?

For the last 8 months, year-over-year new manufactured home shipments are in decline. What? During an affordable housing crisis?

The Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) has dryly reported the facts of that decline, but they seem tone-deaf as to any explanation for that decline.  As evidence of how tone-deaf they are, they speak about ‘momentum’ and have used a slogan, ‘let’s keep building.’ Seriously?

Our industry is demonstrably smaller than it was 15 or 20 years ago. There are thousands of fewer retailers. There are thousands of fewer communities. There are fewer builders of HUD Code manufactured housing. Several of the companies whose names endured – Champion or Fleetwood, to name but two – companies that were giants 20 years ago went into bankruptcy in the first decade of the 21st century. What exists today are essentially new entities under an older brand name. What caused longtime successful firms to tip into bankruptcy? Doesn’t that bear scrutiny?

BloombergShipmentProductionGraphicManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

April 2019 data reflects month 8th of the downturn, with nary a whimper from MHI or the big boys. Why?

These are the snapshots of reality that others in MHVille trade media – much less MHI – bother addressing. Why?

But the kinds of reports that you find here are the reason that this is by far the largest and most read “Industry News, Tips, and Views Pros Can Use” © site in all of manufactured housing trade media.  Others may make bold – even demonstrably outlandish claims.  They may produce slick magazines, but those slick covers sit on the racks, because they are not picked up. Why? Apparently not many want to read phony sunshine stories?

MHInsiderDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsTunicaShow2019Day2

A photo of another rack at Tunica appears almost untouched. The industry’s pros, given a choice between fluff and reality often chose the real deal, found only at MHProNews.

From the largest firms, to the mid-sized, or ‘mom-and-pops,’ the pros in manufactured housing are on our pages daily by the thousands. There are those who cheer what they read here, because almost no one else is exposing what MHProNews is willing to cover with facts, evidence, and follow-the-money-trail published here. Then there are those who are bothered by what they read or those who are just trying to figure out why manufactured housing is underperforming so badly – they are all among those who read here.  Investors and nonprofits read here too. Among the 1.2 million-page views monthly, per third party tracking, third-party software tells us that thousands of hits on our site come from federal officials who are on our site every month.

Those who want to know and understand, come here.

To stay in the know in order to grow, you too can become a part of the most engaged professional audience in MHVille history.  To sign up in seconds for our twice weekly emailed headline news updates, click here or the graphic below.

There is no more goal- and solution-oriented trade media in all of manufactured housing than this site. While toadies kiss the derrière of the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis, we dare pull back the curtain and show the evidence, money trail, and concerns others try to ignore or obscure.

Per Third Parties, Billions of Dollars in Potential Growth for Factory-Builders

What is the goal here on MHProNews?

As true believers and often praised experts in the industry, we know firsthand that sustainable growth is possible because we’ve worked professionally with firms that have achieved profitable growth. The evidence reflects that far more could be done.  Tens of billions of dollars in additional manufactured housing production at retail is attainable.

That requires understanding of the obstacles and the opportunities.

Who says there is that kind of growth potential? How about one of the most valuable conglomerates in the world’s investment unit? In part of a 2018 statement when they invested in Plant Prefab, Amazon’s Alexa Fund pegged the opportunity for new housing at $300 billion a year.

If only a quarter of that $300 billion-dollar annual potential were earned by Manufactured Housing, that would represent about a nine fold increase in dollar volume over 2018.

Given the potential of manufactured housing, it’s a disgrace that the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis is so focused upon hobbling our industry and posturing instead of doing what’s necessary to improve measurable performance.  The evidence arguably reflects they seek to foster consolidation and ‘taking out’ honest independents to the extent that they are letting tens of billions of dollars annually slip through the fingers of investors and professionals,” said publisher L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach.

Experts and politicos across the left-right spectrum are increasingly expressing alarm over the monopolization of several sectors of American businesses and professions. Is it a surprise that it is happening in manufactured housing too?

But how some of this is occurring in MHVille may be somewhat different.

Never forget that Kevin Clayton said on video that it would be okay with ‘Warren’ if Clayton Homes lost money for 5 years, so long as they expanded their Moat. While roughly 100 of their retail locations have lost money.  But they aren’t losing money overall, and they are expanding their Moat. Clayton and their allies are earning and slowly consolidating at the same time. Literally thousands of industry independents have been steadily vanishing during an affordable housing crisis. Coincidence?” – asked Kovach, a long-time MH industry veteran.

What’s happened in manufactured housing is a largely misunderstood tragedy, because too many others in the manufactured home industry’s trade media largely overlook or spin it. MHI gives the ‘big boys’ cover, so that purported corrupt behavior in turn harms the affordable housing seeking public, millions of whom could purchase a new manufactured home for less than they pay in rent,” Kovach said. “This pattern of behavior within the industry has drawn a number of critics from inside the industry’s ranks. It cries out for Congress to publicly investigate this slow-rolling tragedy, its impact on business, millions of Americans, and taxpayers.”

The stories that follow reflect what sparks such comments.

Manufactured Housing’s Top 10, March 2019

March 3rd, 2019 Comments off

ManufacturedHousingsTop10March2019DailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Exploring the following top ten should be a periodic habit for every professional.  It should be part of every business review from firms small- to-large in manufactured housing.

These top ten items should be discussed internally, until a new habit is formed by those in management, as well as by those who own, advocate for, and/or invest in manufactured housing,  The top ten should also be a priority for those who aspire to leadership.  How else can one grow without really grasping the following top ten challenges, and following the logical next steps they imply?

In no particular order of importance, here are the bullets of the top ten items of concern in manufactured housing.

  • Zoning, placement and local restrictions.  To see examples of how this already has been overcome in specific cases, and thus can be – overcome in others, see two of the reports, linked further below.

  • Financing – wholesale and retail.

  • Capital, beyond the financing above, access to capital is necessary for business growth.

  • Recruiting of needed talent, be it trade-work, office, sales, management, production, service, installers, transporters, etc.

  • Training, Education, and Motivation.  If a location(s) and/or the industry is/are underperforming, part of that must be due to Human Resources type needs. Thousands of manufactured home industry owners and employees alike are thirsting for good information and motivation. Education is a routine attraction for professionals to attend industry events. Education/information, reality checks like this article, and motivation are top attractions to MHProNews, which leads the industry by a country mile in trade media, because the thirst for knowledge that can pave the way to more sales is so great.

  • Attracting more and better qualified customers who are considering other types of housing, and successfully engaging with them. Millions rent who could be buying a manufactured home. Millions more are downsizing or upsizing housing every year too. Furthermore, when over 5.6 million housing units were sold in 2018, almost all for sums well above the costs of our industry, during an affordable housing crisis, why were less than 97,000 new HUD Code manufactured homes sold in 2018?

  • Breaking out of ruts and problematic patterns of behavior. Asking honest questions. Seeking objective answers.  Many in the industry either accept the status quo, or don’t stop and think about how much better business could be. That means that many don’t consider what is needed to achieve more profitable growth. Think management by objective (MBO), change management, inspirational dissatisfaction, and more.

  • Customer satisfaction and referrals. Customer satisfaction doesn’t depend on a perfect product. Rather it depends upon a marketing and sales process that prepares a customer for reality, helps them to appreciate that reality, and then makes them happy with reality. With some 8.8 million mobile and manufactured homes in America, if only one out of ten of those helped sell another new manufactured home every year, then the industry would be selling 880,000 new manufactured home shipments a year, not under 100,000 new homes shipped that actually occurred in 2018.  Keep in mind, that the National Association of Realtors ™ (NAR) chief economist, Lawrence Yun, PhD. said in 2018 that the nation needs some 8.3 million more housing units.  To do that, said Yun, builders have to get really busy.  Only factory builders can hope to achieve the needed growth, is what Jeff Bezos’ Amazon’s Alexa Fund decided last year when they invested millions into a prefab housing startup.

  • Everything else.

Both for publishing and for business development services, the parent company of MHLivingNews and MHProNews – dba’s of LifeStyle Factory Homes, LLC – have a primary focus of dealing with evidence, facts, and realty. Using demonstrated methods with the proper insights and resources yield better and more profitable outcomes.

When it comes to items like those above, for example, education, consider what others have said.  The first person to speak on this video is someone who heard a talk that was motivating to them, even years later.  The entire video is laced with what others have said about our pro-growth work.  You will see people you know. None were compensated in any way, in fact, many paid us and thanked us for helping improve their operation. If you’ve seen these 2 videos before, look at them again through new eyes, and with the top ten items above in mind.

Savvy pros know that wishful thinking can’t be relied upon.  Pragmatic, proven methods can be trusted.  Lessons learned can be applied to achieve more profitable growth.

As an educational plug, see the video below to discover how even a modest-sized family operation could grow rapidly and profitably, by learning and applying the right principles.  They were already successful, but became more successful after working with MHProNews’ L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach on a consulting, training, and marketing project.

The company in the video made an investment in their own business, and it paid for itself through more profits. In this example below, the firm had over 400 percent growth, for an already successful company. Other examples exist from other sectors of the industry.  Would you like to learn more about that? Check out the video.

Then ask yourself, would you like to have similar growth too?  If so, click here or call L. A. “Tony” Kovach’s office at 863-213-4090. Our methods are proprietary, and our clients commit to keeping them proprietary. That said, you can get a very good sense of what takes place from the unscripted interview video, above.  Note there was no payment or other consideration made for Fath doing this video, he says why he did the endorsement near the end of the discussion.

The true story of Rollohome should not be overlooked or forgotten. They went from a start up to 60,000 new homes sold in 2 years.  Manufactured housing is just scratching the surface of its potential today.

Rollohome, Creating 60,000 Factory-Built Homes in 2 Years

If Rollohome could do it, why not many others today?

Readers like you and from firms of all sizes have made us the runaway number one – #1 – trade media in our industry’s history.  Thank you. We are also the most praised and endorsed industry trade media ever, with third-party citations from NAR, CFPB, an item read into the Congressional Record, plus periodically named by others in the mainstream news media, and more.

The words of the late Howard Walker, ELS Vice Chairman, shared for publication with MHProNews.

Please see the Friday evening report below for just how “read hotMHProNews is. Our thanks to readers, supporters and sponsors for making that possible and true.

Notice to Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) members. Some have asked why MHI news isn’t often published here?  Fair question.

For those who don’t know, or need a reminder, keep in mind that it was MHI who asked some years ago not to have all of their reports published here, as was previously done. MHProNews published all MHI reports for years, we were also paid, until they said, please stop doing so going forward. Note, that they also stopped giving  the Journal of Manufactured and Modular Housing a monthly article before they asked MHProNews to stop, and yet Jim Visser at the Journal rarely editorialized.

So, for whatever reasons, we at MHProNews were not alone. It was all MHI’s idea, it’s documented, and it was not our notion.  By contrast, MHARR continues to sponsor MHProNews. Interesting factoids, aren’t they?

One more note, our editorial stances are our own.  Sponsors may or may not agree with our editorial topics or perspectives.  That freedom gives us the ability to cover a breadth of topics no one else in the industry even comes close to matching.

There are clearly issues to be navigated.  We believe in pragmatic reality,  not mere rah-rah. That’s what the Top Ten should tell you. But above and below you will see reasons why some are exceeding expectations. The industry is just scratching the surface, which means that tremendous growth is possible for those willing to work smarter than others.

There are reasons why manufactured housing is selling less than in years gone by.  Legacy Housing, along with others, believe there is room for serious growth.  Their graphic below is a reminder of what once was, because it should be a measuring rod for what could be again.  Or more.

Legacy clearly believes in the future of the business, because they are raising capital to expand their retail base.

So under-performance is opportunity in disguise.

Some Have Tried to Copy, But Have Missed the Mark

We’re not knocking any competitor or other firm when we say – as but one example – that story telling videos are largely done the wrong way in manufactured housing. The proof is in the bottom line results.  Clayton, for example, spends millions on marketing.  Clayton sponsored Duck Dynasty, which for a time was the hottest show on TV.  why didn’t they sell 500,000 homes a year, instead of less than 50,000?

By contrast, we’ve taken specific locations, and by doing a combination of items like those discussed in the Tom Fath interview above, have had compelling videos that are authentic interviews. A native American and his wife are in the video below.  They were paid nothing, yet gave an insightful story that is persuasive because it is an interview that was unscripted and authentic.

Or we’ve done interviews with professionals, that can be good for the public (B2C) or useful with professionals (B2B).  An example is below.

Serious growth is never an accident. Understanding the top ten, and learning proven ways to turn problems into profits is something every growth focused professional should want for their operation. That’s this Sunday morning installment of the week in review for manufactured housing professional focused “Industry News, Tips, and Views Pros Can Use” © where “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, commentary.)

Timely information combined with money can move stocks and markets. Information may be legally or illegally used, as the growing storm clouds over Cavco Industries (CVCO) concerning certain trades by Joe Stegmayer and Cavco reminded the manufactured home industry and its investors.  But note that Stegmayer and Cavco are not directly tied into today’s analysis, though they will be the focus of a looming report.

There was an interview reported this past week by the Scotsman Guide with the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) Executive Vice President (EVP) Lesli Gooch, Ph.D. That publication has quoted MHI previously.

Before examining Gooch’s comments and their timing, one should pause and do a brief refresher on the award-winning Oliver Stone movie, Wall Street.  Some selected quotes from Wikipedia will serve to tee up the ball, by conveying plot-lines that convey fictional but still useful concepts.  Each bullet is a quote from the link here.

Bud Fox is a junior stockbroker at Jackson Steinem & Co. in New York City. He wants to work with his hero, Gordon Gekko, a legendary Wall Street player.

Bud provides him [Gecko] some inside information about Bluestar Airlines, which he has learned in a casual conversation with his father, Carl, leader of the company’s maintenance workers union.

…Gekko offers Bud another chance, and tells him to spy on British CEO Sir Lawrence Wildman and discern Wildman’s next move. Bud learns that Wildman is making a bid for a steel company. Through Bud’s spying, Gekko makes money, and Wildman is forced to buy Gekko’s shares to complete his takeover.

…Bud is promoted as a result of the large commission fees he is bringing in and is given a corner office with a view. He continues to maximize inside information and use friends as straw buyers to provide more income for him and Gekko. Unknown to Bud, several of his trades attract the attention of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

…Bud devises a plan to drive up Bluestar’s stock before manipulating it back down…”

The MH Evening Market Report

Every evening for several years, the Daily Business News on MHProNews does a closing market recap of specific manufactured housing industry connected stocks after the closing bell. What years of observations have yielded helped forge an evolving evening market report. Every business news show or website is premised in part on the notion that news stories, data, headlines, and insights often move one or more stocks, or even the broader markets.

For balance, MHProNews uses bullets from CNN Money and Fox Business, to allow for the media’s evident left-right divide. We use closing market data from CNN, Yahoo, and Bloomberg too.

CNNFoxNewsLeftRightMediaBiasDailyBusinessNewsMHproNEwsSharylAttkisson

MHProNews looks at issues from a wide variety of perspectives.

That a mere statement can move stocks and/or the broader markets is beyond question. For example:

Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, and Jaime Dimon made a public announcement in 2017 on the day of President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump’s State of the Union (SOTU) Address. Healthcare stocks, and much of rest of the markets dropped that day, as an apparent result.  Prior to that, stocks had enjoyed a long, steady rise.

Words and ideas apparently matter to Wall Street and investors. Who speaks those words matters too.

With that backdrop, let’s consider what “Dr. Gooch” from MHI said to the Scotsman Guide, as well as what occurred. There are no specific allegation being made. But the facts, quotes, narrative, and the outcomes after the shutdown will be considered.

Let’s next look at some selected items from Scotsman Guide (SG) Media’s About Us page.

Shutdown threatens manufactured-home industry

The government shutdown hasn’t widely affected the manufactured-housing industry yet, but a prolonged closure has the potential to stop deliveries of new manufactured homes all over the country, an industry trade group says.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD’s) Office of Manufactured Housing, an agency that oversees the building code and certification process for manufactured homes, has been closed during what has become the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. This has only so far affected manufacturers producing homes that require letters of approval for alternative construction, according to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), an industry trade group.

HUD often opts to approve alterations in approved floor designs or other features in manufactured homes on a case-by-case basis.  Because of the shutdown, HUD’s office can’t do that, leaving some manufacturers in limbo, said Lesli Gooch, MHI’s senior vice president for government affairs.

“If you don’t have approval through the alternative-construction process, that house can’t be delivered because that house can’t receive the HUD code-certification label,” Gooch told Scotsman Guide News. “We have a lot of manufacturers.”

Gooch said one plant in Mississippi, for example, was awaiting approval last week from HUD to install an HVAC unit that isn’t on its approved list. That company is producing manufactured-home units for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“Because HUD is closed, they are not going to get approval, which means the production of these FEMA units is on hold until they get approval,” Gooch said. She said the trade group is still investigating how many deliveries have similarly been disrupted.

“I don’t have a sense of how large a problem this is as far as production being halted because of the need to renew an alternative-construction letter or the need to obtain an alternative-construction letter,” Gooch said. “The Mississippi issue is one that I was contacted about just because it is one federal agency requesting homes, and they can’t be built because HUD is closed,” she said.

Gooch also said there is the potential for widespread problems should the shutdown drag on for another month. MHI believes there is a possibility that the supply of HUD tags could run out because of the closure and budget impasse.

Every manufactured home that is built and delivered in the U.S. — roughly 8,000 per month — has to be inspected and certified as having met safety standards. Once inspected, the manufacturer is given a red-metal tag, which is affixed to the exterior of the building to verify that it meets the standard. The home can’t be delivered to a customer until it is tagged.

“Based on our research, the industry’s PIAs [primary inspection agencies] should have enough labels on hand to get through the end of February,” Gooch said. “If the government shutdown continues, early March is our first estimate of when a problem could develop.”

For the duration of the shutdown, HUD has also stopped the Title 1 loan program, which backs a small number of chattel loans each year used by borrowers to buy manufactured homes that aren’t titled as real property.

Now, let’s turn to two graphics from our evening market reports.  The first is from the evening of 1.23.2019.  This would be the day after Gooch’s quoted commentary, shown above.

BloombergJan232019ClosingTickerManufacturedHousingIndustryTrackedStocksDailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews

Berkshire and MMI clearly have other interests, beyond manufactured homes, as is true of some of the other tracked stocks shown above. But Cavco is a factory-built housing focused firm. The majority of the tracked stocks fell on the day following Gooch’s comments.

The next graphic is from the evening of 1.25.2019, after the end of the partial federal shutdown was announced.

BloombergJan252019ClosingTickerManufacturedHousingIndustryTrackedStocksDailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews

Virtually all tracked stocks moved up by the close of the market’s day following the partial federal shutdown. Next, look at what the broader markets did on 1.23.2019 and on 1.25.2019.

Note that there was already Washington, D.C. and media scuttlebutt that a deal to end the recent shutdown was already in motion at the time the Scotsman Guide article was published.  Note too what the broader markets did on both days, which largely closed up.

YahooFinance12ClosingIndictatorTickerSummaries1-23-2019ManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

These 12 indicators are published every evening on the Daily Business News on MHProNews market summary and related featured report. Note that the markets generally rose both days, but on the 1.23.2019, the manufactured housing industry’s connected tracked stocks largely fell. It could be a coincidence. But what if Gooch’s article – intentionally or not – was used by traders and investors to reconsider some of their positions in manufactured home businesses?

YahooFinance12ClosingIndictatorTickerSummaries1-25-2019ManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Then consider this point.  There are arguably few manufactured home industry professionals, much less stock market watchers and investors, who would have even considered the notion that a partial federal shutdown could impact manufactured housing at all.

So why make did Gooch make those comments in the first place?

As was noted at the top of this column, Joe Stegmayer is under the cloud of an SEC subpoena. He stepped down as Chairman and CEO of Cavco, and the stock plunged as a result. A follow up report on that topic is pending, as there are new developments learned about that fiasco, which will be reviewed in the days ahead by MHProNews.

But for now, we will simply note the obvious. Stegmayer is still MHI’s Chairman. He is an ex-division president of Clayton Homes, a Berkshire Hathaway company. Since the time that Triad Financial Services CEO Don Glisson, Jr was briefly their chairman, MHI apparently has had no problem with keeping someone on as chair that has come under a cloud of legal or media suspicion. Consider these three.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) “F rated” SSK Communities’ partner Nathan Smith

Tim Williams, President and CEO or Berkshire Hathaway owned 21st Mortgage Corp, and

Joe Stegmayer of Cavco Industries (CVCO) have all come under a cloud of legal, media, regulatory, and/or some other combination of suspicion.

None of those 3 bothered to step down as MHI Chairman.   Although MHI has postured efforts for growth for years, the industry has steadily been consolidating. Sales have been moribund, in spite of overall quality and satisfaction that third party research has documented. One such example of their party praise is linked here.

Questions, Questions…

There ought to be some open questions from investigators that seek honest answers as to why Gooch would make these statements in the first place.

  • Who did or might have benefited from Gooch’s odd statements?
  • Who did this potentially impact – or which firms might have been harmed – by Gooch’s statements?
  • Were her arguably misguided comments merely foolish? Or where they a page out of the MHI play book – namely, actions and/or inactions that harm independents – that also fits loosely with a plot-line of the movie Wall Street?

What is certain is that Congressional hearings and an SEC investigation ought to be conducted related to several issues connected to the Manufactured Housing Institute. But it won’t be only about the article reviewed above. It should also be about the facts and evidence from articles linked below the bylines and the notices that follow.

We opened this with the words, “Timely information combined with money can move markets. Information may be legally or illegally used…”  There’s an affordable housing crisis.  Yet, manufactured housing is snoring instead of roaring.  MHI claims to be promoting the industry.  How did Gooch’s comments promote confidence?

ManufacturedHousingSHipmentsBloombergQuintFactoryBuiltRebuidRecoveryDailyBusinessNEwsMHproNEws

See MHI President Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison’s comments, linked below the byline. Also see what MHI’s prior president said at this link here.

Corruption, waste, fraud, and other abuses in the Washington, D.C. metro are not new.  But that doesn’t mean that they should be tolerated.

Something has smelled in certain offices in Arlington, VA for some time. And it’s not a flowery aroma.  Rather, it’s arguably the stench of a string of troubling incidents and concerns connected to MHI that has made them worthy of suspicion, which our coverage and analysis of such #nettlesome things have made this pro-manufactured housing growth publication the most widely read trade media in this industry today.

Many if not most Manufactured Housing Professionals – MHPros – know the truth about our industry’s products and services. That said, millions of people don’t know.  You might say that they have been conditioned into thinking something that is untrue. Hold that thought, because in many ways it is a key to unlocking the future profit potential for your business and location(s).

For longtime readers, recall, that a manufactured housing professional – an informed MHI member – is the one who suggested that we research and report on Operation Mockingbird. Google it, we did, and then we did the report at the link below.  Family Jewels was a term used in a declassified CIA document about a once-secret operation, Operation Mockingbird.

.

“Family Jewels,” MHVille Insider Tips, “Info Wars” and Omaha, Knoxville, California, Seattle and Arlington, and DC Connections

A manufactured home professional also wrote to say, “I am ready for infowars.” Hold that thought too, because unlocking that is also a way to unlock the potential for your business, products, or services.

It is axiomatic that normal people love their children and grandchildren. As with all rules about humanity, there are exceptions. Exceptions – properly understood – often can be used to prove the rule.

The most basic social unit is that of the family. “Social engineers” have been trying to redefine the family for decades, and to some degree, one must admit, that has worked. Teams and businesses have used the phrase “we are family” for some time. The performers The Sisters Sledge in 1980 cut the hot tune – “We Are Family.” Dated now, it was red-hot then.

A hit song gets played over and over – repetition.

Repetition is either good or bad depending on the subject matter.

Repeat the good over and over, and it sinks in. Repeat the bad over and over, and sadly, that sinks in too.

If someone kept repeating something harmful to your child or grandchild, in time, they could come to believe it.  Depending on the subject, certain harmful beliefs could result in injury or death.

Poison often has an antidote, a medication used to counter the effects of the poison.

The antidote to poisoned information is the truth properly told, and told often enough. That’s infowars in a nutshell. That’s why fact checks and analysis are so important. We do those fact checks and follow the money here.

Call it what you will, but the severe divisions in America are a wake-up call. It is self-evident to thinking, informed business leaders that manufactured homes are misunderstood. It is also logically true that other falsehoods and misinformation are occurring.

Want to unlock greater potential profits? Understanding and then communicating to others the truth is an essential part of that process.

PEPProtectEducatePromoteUnlockingMindsKeyToAdvancementMHProNews

We created the graphic above years ago, because we understood in a broad sense what was necessary, and how to do it. What we didn’t fully grasp was how the biggest association and the biggest companies in our industry were arguably part of the problem, not part of the solution. But thanks to tips from various informed readers, now we have got it.

While he misused the term, mobile home, Frank’s point below was arguably spot on.

You aren’t getting that clarity of reasoning above from the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). That clear thinking isn’t coming from Clayton Homes or any other mega-firm in our industry. Why not?

You are getting it here on MHProNews. Which is why you and thousands of others have or will log on today.

Once weekly, we present the headlines for the reports published from the week that was. We curate – hand pick with intent and deliberation – each report we give you. In our industry, we are the runaway #1 as a result of readers like you, our sources, clients, and sponsors that collectively make this site possible.

If MHProNews is writing about it, I want to know about it,” said a company leader as part of a longer message to us.

As that tipster above wisely said it – for better or worse – we are in an era of infowars. Fake news has to be understood. Which is why we have, among the topics from the week that was, a Daily Business News report on fake news, and how to spot it. That features a short video by a mainstream media expert and award-winning journalist, who is now free from her mega-company.

Help us, help you, help your team. For the sake of your children and grandchildren. This is bigger than our industry, but logically – if you focus on getting the truth out about our industry – that’s an important start.

Here, thinkers like you are not alone. In our avoidably modest-sized industry today, north of 10,000 average logged on daily in recent months, per third-party metrics. For our boutique industry, that 10,000 average daily readers is incredible market penetration.

But it is also reflective of the fact that researchers about manufactured housing – who are often investors – are here day by day too.

The two most common words we get from readers, are “thank you,” and we in turn thank you – our readers, sources, clients and sponsors. Together, we advance.

The positive economic news stands in stark contrast to the roughly last 9 years before the 2016 election, when huge borrowing and a series of “QEs” – “Quantitative Easing” – artificially propped up an economy that was being strapped down by heavy regulations and taxes too.  Today, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell talked at an economic forum about the economic outlook, which will be our focus report for this evening.

Today’s MH Market Spotlight Report –

Among the points that left-of-center CNBC rarely mentions when it comes to the FED and the economy today vs. the Obama era is this.  QE was a fancy phrase for ‘printing money’ by the FED. It was an artificial way of propping up the economy.  Besides all the positive economic news, often overlooked is the fact that the Federal Reserve has been “unwinding” those holdings that kept the markets artificially higher.

Wolf Street, not CNBC, reported in August that “The plan calls for shedding up to $420 billion in securities in 2018 … Since the beginning of the QE-Unwind, the Fed has shed $129 billion in Treasuries. … In total, $61 billion in MBS have been shed since the beginning of the QE unwind.”

That’s arguably another example of how a media outlet’s hidden agenda can subtly-to-boldly ‘spin’ the news.  It’s one of several reasons why MHProNews cites headline bullets each evening from CNN Money and Fox Business, which at least provides some balance to the otherwise hyper-partisan way that news is often reported.

That said, let’s look at what CNBC said this evening about Chairman Powell’s comments.

  • Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell cited a “remarkably positive outlook” for a U.S. economy enjoying both low unemployment and inflation.
  • A reporter asked Powell after last week’s Fed meeting whether the outlook was too good to be true,” and he said it was “a reasonable question.”
  • In a speech Tuesday, the central bank chief said the jobless rate is running at 3.9 percent and inflation is around the Fed’s goal of 2 percent. Historically, low unemployment has fueled inflation and sometimes has forced the Fed into hiking interest rates rapidly.
  • While these two top-line statistics do not always present an accurate picture of overall economic conditions, a wide range of data on jobs and prices supports a positive view,” Powell told economists at a Boston conference. “In addition, many forecasters are predicting that these favorable conditions are likely to continue.”

Trivia: If you look carefully, the screen shot of the iPad above often looks like the MHProNews home page did on that Sunday morning.

Mensch

We’re preparing an article about a Jewish gentleman known by scores in the Manufactured Home (MH) industry.

In mentioning our research to a Jewish MH industry colleague, he said, “Make sure you say that he was a mensch.”

Google’s online dictionary defines the word “mensch” like this.

MenschNobelPrizeofWordsTitleYouCantBestowOnYOurselfmensch

men(t)SH/

noun NORTH AMERICAN informal

  1. a person of integrity and honor

The Urban Dictionary says, “A mensch is a someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being “a real mensch” is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible.”

Dictionary.com says a mensch is a “person of strength and honor,” 1907, from Yiddish, from German Mensch, literally “man, person,” from Old High German mennisco “human,” from Proto-Germanic adjective *manniska- “human” (see mannish

Everyone, including we non-Jews (“the goyim”), can learn much from the mensch we are fortunate enough to encounter in life.

Divisions

Among the things Tony and I discuss from time to time is how governments, by accident or design, can divide people who otherwise can joyfully coexist side-by-side, absent irksome meddling.

RC Williams, Daily Business News MHProNews

RC Willaims.

As R.C. Williams put it about a year ago, there are professional race-baiters. It’s a term used by others besides R.C., to describe individuals who literally make money stirring up racial discord, often using a non-profit, or other operation to collect money.

Political parties are useful in some ways, but it must also be acknowledged that political parties and their advocates have the tendency to divide people into “us vs. them.”

That can happen in professional groups too.

HowToBeAModernDayMenschThoughtcoDailyBusinessNewsMNProNEws

Scriptural scroll for rabbinic reading.

We’re not among those who believe that every religion is equal.  There are for example, Satanists, not many believers would put them on the same level as other groups. But we acknowledge that if God-Who-Created all gave man free will, then we must respect other’s right to choose.

That doesn’t imply that in politics, religion, economic or other distinctions that dialogue should be avoided.

Robust, frank dialogue that seeks truth in all its forms is to be celebrated.

So, respectful dialogue on issues that divide people ought to be embraced.

Absent absolute standards of right and wrong, how can we recognize what’s criminal, okay or what soars to the level of what is honorable?

To be a mensch – an honorable person who acts with integrity – whatever one’s personal or demographic data might be – requires standards.

Back to Basics

Many a coach has taken a struggle team “back to basics,’ Tony says. When something is awry, the basics ought to be among the first its to examine.  When the industry is still at historically low levels of sales, everything that contributes to that should be evaluated.

When Tony and I met nearly 15 years ago, Tony was working in the Houston metro area. He described an impressive manufactured housing retail operation that had lots of traffic. It had leading edge tech at that time. The display made every home look as if it was ground set.  Every home was staged to the 9s.

That retailer had multiple outlets.

But as impressive as that retail operation was, as high as their traffic was, their conversion ratios were low. Their sales were low.

They ended up going bankrupt.

Tony said much of their plan was fine, but when people aren’t buying in sufficient numbers to sustain a business, it’s an obvious sign that one or more things are either missing or are not sufficiently emphasized.

That retailer never became a client of his. For a fraction of the cost of their monthly overhead, they could have invested and won. They pinched pennies, and it cost them millions. It’s but one of numerous examples of ways that a firm can fail.

The word “integrity” has several meanings. One is “the state of being whole and undivided.”

HonestyIntegrityWordCloudEthicsTrustRespectSincereMonsoonLeadersManufacturedHousingMHProNEws

Honest people can fail. Dishonest people can succeed for a time, as some criminal enterprises prove.

But ultimately every operation that has integrity – in a free enterprise system – learns to serve the public in ways that benefit the buyer, while profiting the seller. It must be a mutual victory.

That win-win requires a foundation, the basics. Every company or organization needs it.

When there’s one or more mensch in the mix, a person of integrity and honor, the odds for sustainable success arguably goes up.

We salute all people who are honorable, and who act with integrity.

With no further adieu, let’s look at the week that was, in over two dozen headline reports.

Millions could care less about politics. Many don’t want to talk about religion either. Especially those in business, who want to be able to serve as many people as possible, topics like that are almost a taboo.

Then there is “industry politics.”  Some only want to hear ‘good news.’  ‘We keep it positive’ was part of a longer thread of messages from an industry blogger.

Isn’t that like not wanting to know when it will rain, hail, snow – or if a hurricane is coming your way?

When the industry was on its heels in October of 2009, the year what’s known as MHProNews launched, there was a need then to get industry professionals to rally.  That required cheer leading, but it also required the facts that supported the reasons to be confident in our factory-built home – notably HUD Code manufactured home – industry.  But modular, prefab, conventional – all housing slid in those days

The automotive, RV, and conventional housing industry recovered more rapidly than manufactured homes did.  Why?  Document and fact laden Smoking Gun 3 will help answer that question.

MHProNews waited to see who among the industry’s trade voices would let the thousands who didn’t go to Las Vegas know that the MHI event was repeatedly disrupted by protestors. It’s on video. See that on the Masthead, because who else in the industry among industry trade talkers will bring you what is real?

We don’t want disunity,’ or ‘But we don’t want to hear negative things,’ some say.  Sure, we get that on the Daily Business News, but as an MD by training, I can tell you that patients don’t want to hear that they have a serious illness either.  Early treatment is the path to the cure.

The doctor, attorney, or account who tells you only what you want to hear can get sued for malpractice.  Don’t you want reliable information, not just happy talk?

As an MD and as a mother-to-be, I didn’t want to hear that our son Tamas wasn’t going to live.  But thank God, by prayer and daily action, he did live and while it required a complete change of plan for me personally, look at what a child who spent much of the first years of his life in a hospital looks like today.

DisplayModelTunicaManufacturedHousingShowTamasKovachAttendeeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Tamas Kovach (pronounced like “TahMash CoVatch), is part of the MHProNews/MHLivingNews family, with a Tunica Show attendee. Numerous such photos are taken during the course of the event.

Sacrifices were made in my career for the sake of our son.  Because we faced a tough reality in the face – through that combination of action and prayer – the payoff with our son was priceless. Almost everyone who meets him rapidly says, how special he is.  At the affordable housing focus group, our son went from table to table, telling joke after joke, to the delight of the attendees, while the video cameras, mics. and lights were being set up.

Every child is special.  Every adult is too.

On MHLivingNews, where the industry truly needs something positive, we do that better than anyone ever in the history of the industry.  But we also use that site to disprove time and again the false and misleading concepts that are held by millions.  It is done factually, based upon evidence, using as often as possible third party research, actual home owners, or other experts. No one else in the history of the industry has produced more such research, useful, and positive content.

The industry still needs a level of confidence building.  But it also needs reality checks and fact checks so that those who hide the facts – who hide the real news, and what’s going on behind the scenes – are shown to be who they are.

In the real world, people do bad things to each other, like it or not.  You have to be ready for that, as a mature adult.

In medicine, you change the prescription and the treatment according to the evidence and to suit the case of the patient.  We pivoted on our format here on MHProNews several times, to suit the evolving situation and to follow the evidence, while following the money.

There’s an affordable housing crisis, and manufactured housing might break the 100,000 shipment mark this year.  That, to borrow HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s phrase, is “ridiculous.”  See Greener and Stylish to better understand just how ridiculous some of what’s been going on in MHVille truly is.

Or on the Masthead, see a report you have yet to see anywhere else in manufactured housing industry trade news or commentary.

Or look at the modular survey for a different reality check.  Some want to run to mods as the solution.  We embrace all kinds of factory built housing.  But if someone thinks that “going modular” alone is the answer, that survey is a wake up call.

The latest MH Industry BIG DEAL is below, with details not found in the official press release.

Not just those, but every story we publish is carefully curated to inform – and yes, inspire – industry professionals.

That’s why you made and keep us the runaway #1 trade media in the industry. That’s what third party facts reveal. Thank you for that confidence.  We don’t ever intend to betray it, even if it means tell you some tough realities. From the biggest names in the industry, to the mom-and-pops, and all in between – plus public officials, investors and others – they all flock to read here by the thousands daily. That’s just a fact.

FactsDetailsMatterScrabbleLettersManufacturedHomeIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

On the nightly market report, we summarize headlines from CNN Money and Fox Business – about as different as you can get – just to give you a fuller sense of how dramatically different the same events are often covered.

We’ve done that for years.  It is called balance.  It’s called fairness. That’s what being truly pro-industry looks like.

Count on us to tell you what the evidence points to, what it means for industry professionals, so that you can better navigate your decisions and actions.  Then, you’ll understand this tag lines, MH “Industry News, Tips and Views Pros Can Use.” ©We Provide, You Decide.” ©

Sunday Morning Weekly Recap – Manufactured Housing Industry Headline News 4.22.2018 to 4.29.2018

America is going through a time of upheaval. That’s not news, that’s reality.

When rapper Kanye West is making headlines for saying that its time for Blacks to get off the Democratic plantation, that’s a signal for just how turbulent the 2018 midterm elections could be.

Don’t count on a normal midterm cycle.  It’s a jump ball. Which major political party wants it the most, and is willing to work for the votes?

There’s a rising economy, but big time political shenanigans. Still, the landscape is potentially favorable to a manufactured housing comeback.

In MHVille, HUD Secretary Ben Carson has made the news several times this week, as has the U.S. Supreme Court, which will hear an MH related case.

CPFB, MHARR, and MHI are all in the news too.

A new production center is underway, and it’s going to be forged by and for independent retailers.

Another celebrity and her “mobile home mansion” [sic} is a headline on lifestyle and living focused MHLivingNews.

And a brave totter driver pulling a true mobile home in a tough spot on video are all among the headlines in the week that was.  Check ‘em ALL out…

…and then, last but not least.  The national news that impacts us all, in or out of manufactured housing.  The president’s approval numbers are rising.  Perhaps its because the economy has been steadily improving?  Or the various promises kept, with work being done on more?

Since the GOP Convention, the 45th president has had overwhelmingly bad press.  Love him, fear his agenda, or anything else along the spectrum, Donald J. Trump is as much our president as the 44 Chief Executives before him, going back to George Washington.  It’s worth listening to what he has to say about himself, his agenda, unfiltered. This video is from last night’s rally, courtesy of ABC News.

Now, let’s dive into industry news for the week that was.
