Making FEMA Homes Suitable for ADA

June 25th, 2012 Comments off

Lois Starkey, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), says the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) is proposing to amend the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) to ensure that temporary housing, following a catastrophe, whether provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or another entity, is accessible for persons with disabilities. To that end, the Access Board published proposed guidelines in the Federal Register June 18, 2012, and is asking for input from industry members at their public hearing July 11, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The board also seeks comments from HUD, FEMA, and any other interested parties. Participants may attend the hearing to give testimony or call in to testify. Interested parties may call Kathy Roy Johnson (202) 272 0041 or email johnson@access-board.gov. Lois Starkey may be reached at Lois.Starkey@mfghome.org
