“Now is the Time for All Good People to Come to the Aid of their Country”

February 1st, 2018 Comments off

DemocraticNationalCommitteeHQDNCManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsThe Democratic National Committee (“DNC”) filed their Federal Election Commission (“FEC”) disclosure form for the month of December in the middle of President Donald Trump‘s inaugural State of the Union speech,” says Law and Crime.

Why did the DNC try to bury their filing in a hot moment in the news cycle? Per the site, “according to the filing, the DNC is practically broke.”

As trade associations and most veteran business professionals have learned, business in America today is interwoven with political issues.

As a federally regulated industry – one that also draws state and local oversight, zoning, etc. – manufactured housing is perhaps more impacted by politics than many other industries.

Which ways are MH Association Leadership exercised?

For all the talk of by talking heads and pundits of a so-called ‘blue wave’ in the upcoming 2018 mid-terms, that alleged ‘wave’ is not showing up in funding.

The DNC raised just over $5.2 million for the month of December. This is a paltry sum to begin with, but the Democrats are currently shellshocked and reeling from a string of policy defeats, out of office and out of power.”  The Law site doesn’t say what those ‘defeats’ are specifically, but since former President Barack Obama came into office, Democrats lost some 1000 seats at the federal, state or local level.

Then, in last November’s upset loss to Donald J. Trump, Democrats lost the Oval Office too.

Republicans have nearly $40 million dollars cash on hand, per Open Secrets.

When DNC debt is subtracted out, they have about $400,000 net.

With the president riding high in flash polls from the State of the Union (SOTU), members of both parties are sending out a similar message to their donors, albeit from completely different perspectives.

Facts Matter – Mr. Obama’s “Alternative Universe,” Trump Admin, Investors & Politicized Manufactured Housing Data

That message is much like the lesson that used to be given in typing classes in high schools, which read like this.  “Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country.”

It seems the GOP, which their website claims plans to outspend Democrats in the midterms, are poised to do just that.

But several high-profile retirements have taken place in both major parties.

Expert’s NWS Statement Reveals Serious Problems in Tornado WARNINGS & Manufactured Housing Safety Data

January 30th, 2018 Comments off

Greg Schoor is about to become much better known in MHVille.

In an exclusive statement published on MHLivingNews, a National Weather Service (NWS) severe storms expert – Greg Schoor – has made admissions that could shake the foundation of what the public has been led to believe about manufactured homes and severe windstorm fatalities.

Schoor admits that tornado death-counts for mobile and manufactured homes fail to make a number of obvious, and important, distinctions.

What Was Said by Schoor, What It Means, and What This Could Mean for MH Owners, Shoppers and the MH Industry

TornadoUSDeathsChinaPersonPickedUpYouTubeDailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews_001For example, per Schoor’s statement, if someone dies outdoors of their dwelling as a result of following the weatherman’s advice to leave their “mobile home,” and “immediately seek other shelter,” that tragedy has been counted as a tornado death in a factory-built, “mobile home.

For another example, if someone dies from any cause, – including a structural failure, a heart attack, or a tree falling and killing someone – those are all being tallied as a storm death attributed to the mobile or manufactured home (MH).

Schoor’s carefully analyzed statements provide numerous revelations that should be a wake-up call for MH industry professionals.

Third-party research or news reports often paint manufactured homes in a negative light, which routinely includes the use of the apparently problematic NWS statistics.

A recent example is the flawed research published in 2017 by Michigan State University (MSU), debunked last year in an analysis by MHProNews, in concert with key Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) staff.

What the newest ManufacturedHomeLivingNews expose implies is that the actual number of deaths tied to structural failure is lower than is being reported.

Further, the MHLivingNews report spotlights how the frequency or odds of even such misleading ‘tornado death tolls’ are incredibly low.

Perhaps worse is the implication that people who take a weatherman’s warning to heart, and leave their homes, could well be dying as a result. They might well have survived, if they had sheltered in place, following tips in the same, new MHLivingNews special report.

That in-depth special report – which includes dramatic video – is linked below.

Weather Expert’s Surprising, Bombshell Statement on Tornado Deaths and Affordable Manufactured Homes

Help Us, Help You, Help Others.”  ©

Industry professionals and MH homeowners are advised to post that special report link on MHLivingNews – shown immediately above – on their social media, as it could save lives…

…and over time, further exposure of these facts could lead to  more respect, a better understanding and thus additional new manufactured homes being sold, as the truth is better understood.

Industry members have told us that sharing the windstorms video with customers have helped them quell the fears of buyers “sitting in the fence.”

Why the Schoor Report Matters to Virtually Everyone in MHVille

L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach addressing industry professionals in an educational session.

While the surveys have been unscientific, L. A. “Tony” Kovach in his public presentations has asked a variation on the following question for years. It is safe to estimate that over 1,000 manufactured home professionals in recent years have publicly raised their hands to agree with the following.  Here’s the question.

Do you believe that negative media reports that focus on tornado deaths in mobile or manufactured homes hurts the industry’s image, and therefor sales?’

Virtually every hand in every group in every location has gone up. Literally not one hand was raised to disagree with that assessment.

America and the Manufactured Housing Industry’s Future – It’s in Their Hands?!

January 30th, 2018 Comments off

CampusReformNYU-SOTUDailyBuisnessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNewsInvestopedia said that, “According to the College Board, the average annual tuition at a private university is $31,231 for the 2014-2015 academic year. With room, board and fees included, the total is $42,419. That means, over four years, a typical NYU student will pay $84,212 more than the average for a private-university attendee.”

NYU is New York University.  How smart do you have to be to attend a collage like NYU?

The average GPA at NYU is 3.7. This makes NYU Strongly Competitive for GPAs. With a GPA of 3.7, NYU requires you to be above average in your high school class. You’ll need a mix of A’s and B’s, with a leaning toward A’s,” says Prep Scholar.

That’s useful background for understanding the video that follows.

According to their YouTube page, Campus Reform, a project of the Leadership Institute, is America’s leading site for college news.”

As a watchdog to the nation’s higher education system, Campus Reform exposes bias and abuse on the nation’s college campuses.”

Days before President Donald J Trump’s State of the Union Address (SOTU), “Campus Reform took to the campus of NYU to ask their opinions on President Trump’s State of the Union address… except the speech hadn’t happened yet.”  President Trump’s first SOTU will be Tuesday night, 1.30.2018.

Campus Reform also says that, “Our team of professional journalists works alongside student activists and student journalists to report on the conduct and misconduct of university administrators, faculty, and students. Campus Reform holds itself to rigorous journalism standards and strives to present each story with accuracy, objectivity, and public accountability.”

As a cross check, the Campus Reform video seemed reminiscent of a NYU edition of “Watters World.” In a pre-2016 election episode, Fox News’ Jesse Watters asked students from that same campus some basic questions about the then upcoming election.

Some did get it right, however…

Future Leaders

These are going to be some of the future leaders of America.

Regardless of a person’s political affiliation, or lack thereof, this ought to be a bracing reality check.

First, how is it possible that so many in institutions of higher learning could be so ignorant on the issues of the day?  What does it say about the state of American education?

Keep in mind that these young women and men are also among those who are discerning their next housing choices.

If they can be so misinformed/uninformed about politics that impact their lives and discussions, is it any surprise when research reveals they have only a dim understanding of manufactured homes?

Clearly, this isn’t to say that all young people are uniformed or misinformed.  This writer personally knows numbers of savvy young Americans.  But a nation is made up of a cross section that includes people like those shown in these videos – who often clearly need to be better informed.

Part of the Problem, or Part of the Solution?

Understanding a problem is the first step.

But the next step must be to engage those millennials and others who are so misinformed or uniformed about the kinds of matters that many of us would have considered basic during our college years.

Consider sharing links and/or encouraging your team mates to read and watch reports like these.

America and our industry are still near a tipping point.  One reason politicos can make absolutely outrageous statements on camera – and often seem to get away with it – is because tens of millions don’t know any better.

Whining or worry won’t fix it.  The proper engagement can. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

“Hacks” – Explosive 2016 Campaign Claims by Former DNC Chair, Donna Brazile

November 2nd, 2017 Comments off

Politico has published a 2200-word excerpt spotlighted by the Drudge Report from what promises to be a hot book soon to be released.

The title?

Hacks,” provides Donna Brazile view of what she discovered after her Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair predecessor, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was pushed out of the post, due to exposes from WikiLeaks.

The title sounds like a creative play on words, implying that the election was ‘hacked,’ but also perhaps a reference to politicos who are ‘hacks?’

Some of Brazile’s Top Line Claims…

Per Politico’s excerpt from Brazile’s book –Hacks,”

  • President Barack Obama left the DNC and the party in debt and in a mess,
  • Debbie Wasserman Schultz was a weak leader, who allowed ‘Brooklyn’ – code for Sec. Hillary Clinton’s campaign headquarters – to effectively run the DNC, even before she won the nomination,
  • She pledged to Bernie Sanders to let him know what she learned, and that what she learned was that his hunch that the 2016 nominating process was rigged was correct,
  • That Hillary Clinton was not a shoe in to win, because there was a lack of enthusiasm from the Obama coalition,
  • That Sec. Clinton was too close to the financial interests in this country (including, but not named in this segment, one Warren Buffett),

Almost a year after the election, and not long after Hillary’s book, “What Happened?” – Hacks could upend the thoughts and approaches on both sides of the political aisle.

Quotable Quotes by Brazile from Hacks

DonnaBrazileWikipediaPostedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsSo I followed the money. My predecessor, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, had not been the most active chair in fundraising at a time when President Barack Obama’s neglect had left the party in significant debt.”

Debbie was not a good manager. She hadn’t been very interested in controlling the party—she let Clinton’s headquarters in Brooklyn do as it desired so she didn’t have to inform the party officers how bad the situation was.”

By September 7, the day called Bernie, I had found my proof and it broke my heart.”

The Saturday morning after the convention in July, I called Gary Gensler, the chief financial officer of Hillary’s campaign. He wasted no words. He told me the Democratic Party was broke and $2 million in debt.”

Obama left the party $24 million in debt—$15 million in bank debt and more than $8 million owed to vendors after the 2012 campaign—and had been paying that off very slowly. Obama’s campaign was not scheduled to pay it off until 2016. Hillary for America (the campaign) and the Hillary Victory Fund (its joint fundraising vehicle with the DNC) had taken care of 80 percent of the remaining debt in 2016, about $10 million, and had placed the party on an allowance.”

Brazile said she told Sanders that while ‘all the polls’ favored Clinton, she didn’t feel the enthusiasm that kept the Obama Coalition together.  That’s an interesting point, because about a year ago, the Daily Business News on MHProNews – using mainstream media polls, but digging into the “internals” of the polls and cross referencing them, made very similar points in saying that Donald Trump could win.

The entire excerpt from Hacks, per left-of-center Politico Magazine, can be download here.

Hillary Clinton, left, Warren Buffett, right. Credit – Boston Globe.  But Buffett’s stock has soared since the Trump victory. Most images on this page were not from Politico’s book report.

Food for Thought…

It isn’t likely to be in Hacks, nor will it likely be said by Brazile.

It should be noted that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has said that the Russians weren’t the source of the DNC documents he was provided.  He’s hinted on Hannity that it was a now dead DNC staffer, Seth Rich.

Editorially – during last year’s campaign – MHProNews supported Trump over Clinton as better for Manufactured Housing and for the nation, based upon each campaign’s stated policies and their respective histories. Related, click here.

Assange has told a Republican Congressman, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher – that if the WikiLeaks founder is promised immunity – a deal that is always contingent on solid proof – he can prove the Russians didn’t provide him the information that some believe helped Donald Trump become president.

Among the Clinton Campaign revelations by WikiLeaks are comments that disparaged Latinos as ‘needy.’ Credit, Fox News/Sean Hannity shown, which AdWeek noted has surpassed all other cable news shows in their most recent survey of viewership.

Also, while President Obama remained personally popular, the Democrats lost some 1,000 seats at the federal, state, and local level during his administration.

WikiLeaks Clinton Open Trade, Open Borders.

The “dream’ was in a paid speech by Hillary Clinton to South American bankers.

As MHProNews has reported,
markets have soared since President Trump has taken office,
consumer confidence is up, business confidence is up,
and much more.

The Trump administration works day-by-day to keep his campaign promises.  Those points also are unlikely to be in Brazile’s book. We’re proud to have supported the Trump team, then and now.

We Provide, You Decide.” (C) ##  (News, analysis, commentary.) Related, linked here.

In a Divided America, Presidential Interview on Tax Reform, His Social Media Habits, More

Almost a year has gone by since the historic 2016 election took place.

The nation is divided, both the left, right and routinely polarized media agree on that point.

Full Measure’s Sharyl Attiksson’s media bias chart is useful in sorting out the agendas behind various headlines and news sources. For background on her left-right media spin chart, click here

Even within the political parties, there are fissures.

Republicans may be mostly united behind the president’s agenda, but the ObamaCare repeal and replace effort showed that there was just enough disunity in party ranks to keep their own multi-year promise from being passed into law, at least yet.

Meanwhile, Democrats are struggling to find a message that will improve their largely lagging fundraising compared to the GOP, and the reverse their 100 percent defeat record in special elections since President Trump took office.

And while the nation is fed a steady diet of reports that pollsters say imply that millions believe that ‘fake news’ abounds regarding the president and other issues, as the Daily Business News has been reporting for months, there are also widespread signs that confidence in the economy and business are at levels not seen in over a decade.

Average Income/Wealth by Age Group, Reports

September 27th, 2017 Comments off

AfricanAmericanSeniorsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsMost manufactured housing industry professionals that deal directly with the public for a year or more instinctively know that the older a person gets, the higher their income and net worth tends to be.

Recent research reported by the Washington Post and Business Insider verify those instincts.

The charts below provide an interesting context to a statement made by HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson, when he said that home owners have an average net worth of some $200,000, while renters have an typical net worth of only $5,000.

Part of the reason is age.

The younger the age group, the less likely they are to be a home owner.

The older an American gets, the higher the likelihood that they will be a home owner, and the higher their net worth tends to be.  ## (News, analysis.)

Video Crash Course on Monopolies, Plus Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) President Richard A Dick Jennison Video

September 6th, 2017 Comments off

Still from the video below. Credits are as shown.

There are various types of “trusts” – another, older word for “monopolies” – and fonts that result in the creations of monopolies.

Some of those different types and causes for monopolies are more acceptable to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) than others.

As Julia Granowicz reported recently, monopolies and their growing influence in America are drawing concerns from across the left-center-right political and economic divide.  Her post cites concerns within manufactured housing, as the report linked above documents.

One of the impacts of monopolies described in the video below is precisely the ability of big business to more effectively lobbying big government on its own behalf.

As reports beginning to surface from inside the Trump Administration have revealed, federal dollars often flow back to specific groups and/or companies. That, of course, is why lobbying is done in the first place.

OpenSecrets says billions spent every year on lobbying in Washington, D.C. The organization also points out that there is a ‘revolving door’ between federal service and the lobby industry.

As industry professionals are pondering the question of monopolies and their impact on manufactured housing – especially independent companies – the two third party videos below are good primers.  The videos explain why monopolies tend to be bad for free enterprise.

Then, this there’s this roughly 20 second video with Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) President and CEO, Richard A. “Dick” Jennison.

Do you think Jennison’s own words indicate a potential path that results in monopolies?

Then see the three-letter question the industry’s top publisher and industry consultant, L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach, says can open the door for billions of dollars in more opportunities for independent manufactured home producers.  See that, at this link here. ## (News, announcements, fact checks, analysis.)

HUD’s Belated, Blustering “Promotion” of Manufactured Homes

June 17th, 2017 Comments off

Teresa Payne, left, Ishbel Dickens, center, Pam Danner, right.

As I have informed you all on various occasions, it is also my goal to improve internal HUD recognition and understanding of the Federal manufactured housing program,” said Pamela Beck Danner, JD.

Danner, is the career administrator for the Office of Manufactured Housing Programs (OMHP), a department “buried” at HUD – per a source connected to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) – in HUD’s risk management program.

That pretty much sums up how HUD sees manufactured housing,” says that source.

Danner’s statement, in the OMHP’s ManuFACTured Housing newsletter, continued, “As a major step in meeting this goal, on Tuesday, August 30th [2016], I was given the opportunity to brief Secretary Castro on the importance of manufactured housing in providing affordable, quality, durable and safe homes nationwide and the role of the Federal manufactured housing program in accomplishing this mission.”

To see the issue with the ‘digital ads,’ click the logo above for the newsletter download. Image credit, HUD, provided under fair use guidelines.

Wow,” said the MHI source, tongue in check, “over two years into her job, and a meeting with HUD Secretary Castro to brief him on manufactured housing was described as a “major step.” Seriously?”

While at least that source with MHI is willing, off the record, to share comments that provide some wit that points to the want of actual accomplishments by HUD toward advancing what the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA 2000) requires, the Arlington, VA based association itself has touted the latest “accomplishment” – shown below – at HUD by Danner.

The pro-HUD, MHI release to state associations, per a source to MHProNews, read as follows:

Do they? MHI’s logo and promotional item above are shown under fair use guidelines, for illustrative purposes. Note, the above was not next to the release shown.

In an effort to raise awareness within the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) of how the manufactured housing industry impacts homeownership and employment nationwide, the Office of Manufactured Housing Programs recently began broadcasting digital ads internally throughout HUD’s Headquarters in Washington D.C. and to field offices across the country through the Department’s intranet web pages.

The ads highlighted specific facts about the importance of the industry, including: the number of jobs and economic impact created by the construction, sale and installation of manufactured homes; the importance of manufactured homes as housing stock in rural communities; and the unique nature of factory-built homes as affordable, nonsubsidized housing for working families.”

That pro-HUD message by MHI stands in stark contrast to what the association asked industry members to state in their comments on Executive Order 13777. MHI’s comments letter and analysis is linked here.

In the EO 13777 MHI comments letter. they take a ‘tough talking’ stand against HUD’s regulatory overreaches. Yet, in the promotional piece above, sent to state association executives, MHI encouraged the pro-HUD message above to be shared with industry members.

What’s up with that?” asked MHProNews from an association leader?

Hell if I know,” that state association source leader said. That source stated they went ahead and sent that pro-HUD promo out, but had no idea of the rationale behind the alleged MHI request.

One of 3 HUD digital ads, found in the newsletter, download linked above. Impressive? And one source with MHI tells us that the job number contradicts MHI’s figure of one home = one job. Which is accurate?

Industry Professionals React

Industry professionals advised MHProNews of the MHI message above, and some expressed concerns on the record.

Second HUD Digital Ad, which the industry is being told is communicated via HUD’s intranet to their D.C. and field offices.

Have you heard that HUD has begun emailing its employees about the benefits of our homes?  JUST A COUPLE OF DECADES BEHIND THE TIME, THAT’S ALL!” (caps in the original), said Bob Crawford, president of award-winning retailer Dick Moore Housing.

Bob Crawford (left), and Frank Rolfe, in panel discussion on industry issues. Both took aim at what they see as MHI’s misses and failures. Credit, Inside MH Road Show, MHProNews.

Third HUD “digital ad.”

Crawford has expressed his concerns before, calling for a new post-production association.

His most recent comment continued on that theme, “Had we a robust post-production representative entity (that aggressively represented the ENTIRE industry) ten-to-fifteen years ago, it’s easy to imagine the positive attention our industry could have enjoyed (and benefited from)!

Crawford rhetorically asked, “Do you think this sudden change is a result of the president’s exec order 13777 asking for comments on ways to improve the HUD Code program?  You think they are getting their ears burnt!?!?  If so, it’s about time!”

Crawford agreed to share these thoughts, on the record, which drew to a close with this, “Again, if we had had some type of ‘heat’ applied to the HUD seats 10 years ago, I would opine that we would not be in the situation of affordable housing shortages and a decreasing independent retailer distribution network that we face today!

The Word from Washington, D.C.

MarkWeissMHARRPresidentManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsIt’s truly amazing that 17 years after the passage of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000, the HUD program is just now getting around to complying with one of its elements (at least rhetorically),” said Mark Weiss, JD, President and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR).

The problem, though, is that such posturing, without resolving the core program deficiencies that are harming consumers and the industry, will accomplish little or nothing,” Weiss said.

He added, “What is needed, is a major shake-up of the HUD program, including the replacement of its “old guard” bureaucrats, the re-assignment and replacement of its administrator, and the introduction of fresh blood and new ideas to change the course, trajectory and dynamics of the program to one that truly advances and facilitates the availability and utilization of affordable manufactured housing, as the law requires.”

TitusDareTomFathDougGormanQuestioningMHI-postedManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsMHI award winner, Doug Gorman, has sided with MHARR’s position with regards to Danner, see Gorman’s comments, linked here.

Which Posture is MHI’s Actual Position?

If HUD’s Danner is now feeling the “heat” – using Crawford’s word – and thus is beginning to advise within their vast bureaucracy, to implement a promise she made some 3 years ago, early on in her tenure at HUD, what would happen if she were to retain her position through the influence of MHI?

What has MHI asked for of HUD Secretary Carson’s staff in their reported closed-door meeting?

Sources among state association executives tell MHProNews that there are pro-Danner voices in MHEC, not just MHI.

But other sources have said that the MHI policy makes no sense. “It’s like there’s a split personality with respect to HUD and Danner at MHI,” one source stated.

Because the power structure of state associations and MHI often have similarities, even when a state executive disagrees with a policy, that doesn’t mean they are free to act on their viewpoint.

As a larger MHI/NCC member community operator told MHProNews in a phone call on Friday, it’s typical for associations to respond more to their larger members than to their smaller ones.

That reality led another award-winning community operator some weeks ago to tell MHProNews that MHI’s largest members have “figured out how to get the smaller members to pay for what they want done.”

That included, per another source, that MHI’s public relations person is allegedly doing work for certain member companies, apparently at MHI’s – meaning their broad membership’s – expense.

They can’t have it both ways,” said a non-MHI member that does business with several MHI companies. “They either support what Danner and HUD are doing, or they don’t. The fact that when you look closely, they are sending mixed messages, strongly suggests they are misleading smaller members. After all, it’s obvious that the largest members know exactly what is going on, and why.”

While the comments period for the Trump Administration Executive Order #13777 as it applies to HUD is now closed, the statements of MHI, MHARR, and some industry members – including this writer – are posted on the Daily Business News story, linked here.  They reflect the disparity between what MHI is saying in their pro-HUD message above, to what they wanted industry members to say in their executive order.

A member-company middle-manager shown the two sets of information coming from MHI about HUD reacted by asking, “Can’t MHI’s PR people keep their own messages consistent?”

“What’s Needed”

As MHARR’s Weiss said, “What is needed, is a major shake-up of the HUD program, including the replacement of its “old guard” bureaucrats, the re-assignment and replacement of its administrator, and the introduction of fresh blood…”

Weiss has taken a strong stand in calling for the full implementation of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA 2000), which he says could return new home industry shipments into the hundreds of thousands of homes a year.

(Publisher’s note: MHI is routinely asked to comment and react to these stories, and they are met with no-comment.  As Managing Member of MHProNews and MHLivingNews, L. A. “Tony” Kovach has invited Dick Jennison and/or Lesli Gooch to debate via video – so the industry can see who stands where and why – MHI’s effectiveness and how they’ve approached advocacy. They’ve yet to accept. Why are they ducking these troubling topics?)

Flashback Friday – Political Obstacles, Reality Checks, Industry Cohesion and Successe$$

Good news and analysis writers don’t begin with the punch line, but some rules were meant to be periodically broken.

Most manufactured housing professionals would far prefer not to deal with politics or complex regulatory issues. They are in business or working for a company to earn a good living.  That said…

With about 7 percent of the nation living in a pre-HUD Code mobile home, or post-code manufactured home, imagine a municipal council where 33 percent of their elected officials are manufactured home owners who love the industry. A place where the local Chamber has met and embraced their manufactured home community operation as an asset. Where businesses are cross promoting each other, including the quality, affordable manufactured home lifestyle.  Can you see how a very-real place like that would help professionals earn more while having happy customers?

That will be the profitable fast-forward part of this Daily Business News and analysis article.

But this being a Flashback Friday, let’s go back in time about three years, and then dot the i’s from that point forward, using precise examples and benchmarks.

There have been no mobile homes built in the U.S. for over 40 years. This is one of several topics that manufactured home industry professionals could be hammering home with public officials, media and potential home buyers. People don’t clamor to live in a trailer house or mobile home. But once home shoppers understand that manufactured housing is legally and qualitatively different, they often open up – and in many cases – make the decision to invest in a modern manufactured home. Selected Flashbacks, from Three to Two Years Ago

The proverbial views from 35,000 feet are found in the videos below, which allows one to dive into potent examples of how things were then, as seen through the lens of the first 6 videos below.

Each of these videos demonstrates the positive, pro-industry stance of MHProNews, and how at that time, there was a reasonably good, professional working relationship with the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), its members and this publication.

Joe Stegmayer – Cavco Industries Chairman and CEO, prior MHI Chairman

Nathan Smith – SSK Communities, prior MHI Chairman

Rick Robinson – MHI General Counsel, Author

ICYMI – two of my favorite lines from this video:

If you like politics, you’ll love my books, and if you hate politics, I kill politicians.” – Rick Robinson.

“I truly lived in a mobile home, in those days, my house was on wheels, and my car was on blocks.” – Rick Robinson.

Richard A. “Dick” Jennison – MHI President, CEO

Dick Ernst – MHI Financial Services Division Chairman, FinMarkUSA finance consultant

MHI President Jennison’s now famous, “Great Publication” video…

There are dozens of other possible examples, but the first obvious takeaway is that MHProNews and MHLivingNews have been pro-association: this has included MHI, MHARR, NFIB and state associations.  That doesn’t mean a blanket endorsement of everything that everyone at every association has ever said or done.  Rather, it’s a factual acknowledgement of the reality that in a complex American legal and political society today, associations can perform an invaluable service — one that especially smaller operators would have a difficult time accomplishing on their own…

Fast Forward

Today, the relationship with some of the MHI staff and the industry’s largest, and most popular trade media has turned frosty. Why?  Did that frostiness precede published exposes?

Why has the relationship with MHARR, several state associations, various companies and MHProNews improved during that same period? Are there connections between those contrasting realities?

This writer has an unfair advantage in answering such questions, because I listened and watched as MHI President and CEO Richard A. ‘Dick’ Jennison went from several calls and messages a week – just over three years ago – to suddenly, unilaterally stopping positive engagement altogether.  Those or other possible allegations won’t be the focus of today’s report.

By contrast, there has always been regular contact with MHARR, even during periods where MHProNews took editorial positions different than theirs. Isn’t that how it should be? The relationship with state associations has generally been cordial, warm, friendly, to good. But again, when there were differences, that didn’t keep associations or trade media to be in sharp conflict with each other.

The focus of this Friday Flashback is the reality that MHLivingNews and MHProNews have worked to promote items useful and beneficial to MHI, MHARR, other associations/their respective members – as well as non-aligned companies.  We’ve done so since our inception, and have continually done so for years.

NewManufacturedHousingAsPercentageOfNewExistingHomeSales2016CreditManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews500xSo as Dick Ernst said in his video above, when Tony Kovach in his role as a commentator has taken a position seen as controversial, it has always been with the long term view of the industry in mind.  Tony and the MHLivingNews/MHProNews team believe in manufactured housing, believe in the value of other forms of prefab and modular homes and believe that consumers and business interests work best when in alignment.

We as pro-Industry trade publishers don’t let push-back or negativity keep us from covering the good, bad or ugly. See the second part of the industry professional’s potent statement, linked below.

Need to be Pro-Industry, Pro-Consumer

The president of a national operation with numerous locations from coast-to-coast said the following to MHProNews yesterday.

They’re probably pissed bc of the old trade association mantra – you’re either with us or against us.”

The off-the record message was a mix of encouragement and that person’s own critical analysis of those who don’t see the value of offering balanced, independent, manufactured housing industry news and commentary.

Let’s deal with the realities of the business . . . and trust that the broader public and our customer base will appreciate the honesty and reward us with more business,” that president wrote. “Thriving industries at the end of the day deliver a strong value proposition.  Let’s focus on doing that!”

The number of MHI, MHARR, and other association members who actively read, follow. and support the analysis offered by MHProNews is growing, as is the industry’s overall readership of the industry’s largest and most-trusted trade media.

Recent Examples of Pro-Industry Activity, Which Aim to Advance Manufactured Housing

The following are examples of dozens of such interviews that spotlight insights which can spark greater interest by investors, professionals, politicos, and the home buying public at large.

Remember that teaser at the top? About the professional who now has 1/3 of the seats for his city council with manufactured home owners? Listen to that backstory, in the video below.

Where does the industry have strong upside potential? The next video points in a direction that will dovetail with the video above.

One more additional, new video will be added here in the next few days, please check back.

Promised Update – New Video

Bombshell?! Programming Notice

Next week, we plan what some will view as a bombshell expose of what attorneys who have reviewed the matter have deemed an illegal activity.

Once published, MHProNews plans to hand the unsolicited, relevant documents provided to us over to federal officials.

Watch for that report. “We Provide, You Decide.” ©

Bottom Lines

There are a growing number of operations in manufactured housing that understand that local HUD Code retailers and communities could be growing at profitable, sustainable, higher double-digit or even triple-digit annual rates.

That would mean that:

  • as community vacancies drop, values would rise,
    • Retailer profits would grow,
    • HUD Code production and profits would grow,
    • More lending,
    • More insurance,
    • more transportation, more installations, more anchors, ‘skirting’ (foundation enclosures), more ACs, porches, steps, decks, other ancillary services, etc.
    • and for associations that get floor dues, more revenues.

The industry is well positioned for tremendous growth, but only if it honestly deals with the issues on the home buying public’s, mainstream media’s and public officials’ minds. To learn more about trillions in many housing industry opportunities, see the second report, linked here.

News has insightfully been called the first draft of history. We get perspective by looking back in the rear view mirror, seeing where we’ve been. We learn by stepping back and seeing how we got to where we are today. When driving that pickup, car, SUV or other vehicle, it’s safest and the odds of successful travel are best when we look ahead, check the mirrors on the sides and behind.

Cohesion is the best path ahead, where each party brings their particular skill and expertise to bear for the good of the many. ##
