Rental markets are local, and vary widely across country,” said Danielle Bastarche, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Housing and Voucher Programs.

It is part of the introductory remarks for the video posted below, which includes several panelists who were involved in studying the issue. It’s recorded in front of a live audience.

This is the video from the presentation that was announced earlier this week, here on the Daily Business News on MHProNews.  See those details at the link below.

HUD, Urban Institute Webcast on Housing Vouchers Thursday Sept 20th – Manufactured Housing Opportunities?

Manufactured housing can qualify for this program, which was passed into law during the waning days of the Obama Administration. It has demonstrably not yet made much noteworthy difference, but often this is true until an energetic mind digs in and finds the keys to unlocking the program’s potential. He or she posted under the name, “EnemyMindControl.” Certainly, we’ve explored for years, as well as more recently, the notion that news often reflects someone’s agenda.  But that’s not the purpose of this post today, rather, its to share a few comments and videos on this Constitution Day.

The video below by the Heritage Foundation is specifically aimed at Constitution Day.

South Carolina’s State Association Was Pro-Active Ahead of Hurricane Florence

September 14th, 2018 Comments off

SouthCarolinasStateAssociationWasProActiveAheadHurricaneFlorenceManufacturedHomeProNews

The manufactured home industry’s new home shipments have been well under its last peak for over two decades. Some associations and businesses have realized that failure to step up to that challenge will only produce more of the same.

Hurricane season happens every year in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Thankfully, there aren’t major storms that make landfall every year, but it makes sense to prepare.

MarkDillardPhotoMHISCManufacturedHousingInstituteMHISouthCarolinaLogoDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsManufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina’s Mark Dillard is a communications award winner.

Dillard’s communications coordinator, Janae Frazier, explained to the Daily Business News on MHProNews their strategy ahead of Hurricane Florence.

First, Frazier told MHProNews today that, “The Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina and all of our members are sending our thoughts and prayers to all impacted by Hurricane Florence.”

For weeks, we’ve been sending safety tips to our members and the public through emails and social media,” Frazier stated. “We have also sent a Guide to Manufactured Housing to news media outlets throughout the state and have even participated in a LIVE television interview about hurricane safety.”

ManufacturedHousingInstituteSouthCarolinaLogoWindSafetyManufacturedHomeHurricaneTornadoWindstromSafetyMHProNews

MHISC used handouts and visuals like the above to help educate media, this graphic was published on a mainstream media new site, but MHProNews added the MHISC logo as shown.

We have a team of social media ambassadors who are spreading safety tips and positive manufactured housing information all over the internet. We have also been monitoring the social media accounts of news organizations to answer questions viewers may be leaving about manufactured homes,” she said.

We are urging residents to check their data plate to see the age of their home and what wind level the home is designed for. We are also urging residents to verify that their home was properly installed by a licensed contractor. If they do not know, they can check with the SC Manufactured Housing Board,” she stated.

We need homeowners to inspect their anchor straps beneath the home. They need to ensure that they replace rusted straps and tighten loose straps. We suggest getting a professional to help out. Lastly, homeowners should evacuate their homes when local authorities tell them to do so.” Frazier shared a new video with the Daily Business News on MHProNews they produced to aid manufactured home owners in that educational and inspection process. It’s posted above.

Rental Housing Marketing – What Can Manufactured Home Pros Learn?

DayinLifeRentersVsHomeOwnersApartmentListLogoManufacturedHousingIndustryAnalysisCommentaryMHProNews

Chris Salviati, Housing Economist with Apartment List provided the following data to the Daily Business News on MHProNews.  It’s arguable subtle aim is to ‘sell’ or ‘justify’ some advantages to renting.

It’s an eye-opener for manufactured housing professionals on several levels.  We’ll note for now that this report isn’t a fact-check of their data.  But after reviewing their data, what will follow in this post are lessons for manufactured housing, and possible uses by the industry’s marketing pros of the claims Apartment List makes.

Let’s begin with their release to the Daily Business News, and we’ll then turn at its conclusion to our analysis and commentary, including what manufactured housing marketers can learn from the Apartment List ‘report.’

ApartmentListNewDataRentersSleep84MoreHoursPerYearThanHomeOwnersDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

What follows below is the bulk of the release from Apartment List to MHProNews. The charts below are from a related report on Apartment List, but were not part of their original release.

Time is our most valuable resource, and the way that we choose to spend our hours ultimately adds up to the way that we spend our lives. Those choices are significantly impacted by the places we call home, and in ways that go beyond just location. Whether one owns or rents one’s home plays an important role in the allocation of time, owing to the fact that homeowners bear a greater responsibility for maintaining their homes.

RentersTypicalDayPerApartmetnListBLSAMericanTimeUseSurveyDailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryProNewsLogo

In a new report, Apartment List quantified the differences in how homeowners and renters spend a typical day. Key findings from the report include:

· Renters sleep an extra 14 minutes per night, which adds up 84 additional hours of sleep. That means renters are getting more than an extra week of sleep every year compared to homeowners.

· Renters spend an average of 23 fewer minutes per day on household activities, including yard work, housework, and maintenance. Over the course of a year, this adds up to three and a half additional 40-hour work weeks that homeowners spend taking care of their homes.

· With this extra time, renters also spend an additional 12 minutes per day on relaxing and leisure, and an extra 5 minutes per day on socializing and entertainment.

· Renters are also more likely to engage in activities outside the home. On average, renters spend 25 fewer minutes per day at home compared to homeowners.

Analysis and Commentary

Let’s take the Apartment List data at face value.

ApartmentListAlexaTrafficComparisonManufacturedHousingInstituteMHIMHProNews

First, their organization should be commended for taking data and making renting look as good as possible from this survey.  Why?  Because where is there anything similar – beyond reports on MHLivingNews or MHProNews – being done in MHVille by say, the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI)?  Isn’t MHI telling their members that they are promoting our industry?

MHIvsApartmentListTrafficComparisons2018-09-13_1337DailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews600

Next, last year, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, M.D. said several times that the average renter has about $5,000 in net worth, while the average home owner has about $200,000 in net worth.  If you asked millions of renters the following question:

  • If you could swap about 40 minutes a week for an extra $195,000 in net worth, all else being equal, would you be a home owner or remain a renter?

Common sense would suggest that millions would be willing to make that bargain.  National Association of Realtor ™ (NAR) research has repeatedly shown that most renters want to be home owners.

So, research like that of Apartment List’s should raise serious questions for manufactured housing professionals. NAR does serious promotion of their industry.  RV trade associations, ditto. Rather than belabor that pattern that demonstrates how effective other trade groups are, we’ll jump to the Manufactured Housing Institute.

ManufacturedHousingInstituteMHILogoMHIInfographicSnapshotFactCheckDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews600

MHI claims they are marketing to promote the industry, but where’s the evidence in the shipment totals?  Why are so few people responding to MHI’s claimed promotions?

MHIvsApartmentListTrafficComparisons2018-09-13_1337DailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews600

Keep in mind that MHI has a budget in the millions annually.

These are serious questions that ought to be asked by MHI members, especially as membership renewal time approaches. Its another reason to create a post-production association that will do what MHI has failed at, can’t or won’t do in an effective way.

Brad Says POTUS Trump is Right: More than Facebook & Twitter, Google Threatens Democracy, Online Freedom

September 12th, 2018 Comments off

BradPascaleSaysGoogleThreatensDemocracyMoreFacebookTwitterDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews600

Few issues are more important than free speech. Your freedom personally or professionally is dependent in large part on your ability to communicate a marketing, educational, or whatever message to others. Furthermore, your ability to learn about a topic depends upon the quality and accuracy of information you are exposed to daily.

For these and other reasons, the Daily Business News on MHProNews has reported for years on various threats to business, individuals and those which specifically or indirectly impact manufactured housing – including various threats to free speech.

With that in mind, the following column from USA Today, which is a left-of-center publication (see graphic below), and is presented below for your thoughtful “wheat and chaff” consideration. Keep in mind that threats to free speech have at various times in U.S. and world history come from either side of the political aisle.

APUSATodayCreditSharrylAttkissonDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

So, this isn’t a partisan issue, even though it does have political, economic, investment and other impacts. The column below is presented in full, but will be followed by some closing comments, and links to related resources.

Note that Parscale documented via hotlinks his various points.

USATodayTrumpIsRightMOreThanFacebookTwitterGoogleThreatensDemocracyOnlineFreedomDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Google, YouTube and other tech giants filter, suppress and even directly attack conservatives. This must stop to protect our free and open society.

BradParscaleWikipediaDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsAmericans must be wary of powerful institutions that seek to control what we see and hear.

As the internet has become an increasingly central part of modern life, Big Tech giants such as Facebook, Twitter and Google have increasingly sought to become the gatekeepers of the internet and political discourse. Without any sort of democratic mandate, these companies have appointed themselves the arbiters of acceptable thought, discussion and searches online.

These companies’ pervasive command of the internet — and blatant desire to control how we interact with it — is a direct threat to a free society. And arguably the worst offender is Google.

Google claims to value free expression and a free and open internet, but there is overwhelming evidence that the Big Tech giant wants the internet to be free and open only to political and social ideas of which it approves.

“Google & others are suppressing voices of conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!” President Trump tweeted last month.

Google has directly targeted Republicans

The president is absolutely right.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Google was accused of manipulating search results to favor Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. Also, research at Harvard University found that Google’s search rankings are not objective, and in 2017, the company was fined billions of dollars by the European Union for manipulating search results.

Google also maintains at least nine shadowy blacklists that affect what the public sees when using its search engine.

When it’s not manipulating the internet to prevent users from viewing right-wing content, Google is directly attacking that content. A report by The Daily Caller News Foundation revealed that Google’s fact-checking service “fact-checked” only conservative news websites, and that in many cases, these fact-checks were outright wrong. What does it say about the fact-checker when its fact-checking is biased and incorrect?

Sometimes, the tech giant just attacks conservatives directly. In one infamous example, a Google search result listed “Nazism” as an official ideology of the California GOP. North Carolina Sen. Trudy Wade, a Republican, was shocked to discover that the top search result for her name returned a photo labeling her as a bigot.

If something vaguely conservative and intellectually stimulating manages to get past Google’s content gatekeepers, they just remove it. YouTube, which is owned by Google, routinely demonetizes, restricts and censors conservative content. One target of YouTube was Dennis Prager’s PragerU, which had 40 of its videos restricted. Prager sued the social media video giant this year following these unfounded restrictions. YouTube has also been known for banning pro-life videos.

Google’s eager adoption of the role of censor should come as little surprise. Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has a demonstrated track record of combining the role of Democrat activist with his job.

Google and YouTube shape our online reality

WikiLeaks emails revealed that Schmidt worked directly with the Clinton campaign in 2016 and was instrumental in forming “The Groundwork,” an online startup company created to help Clinton win the election. He was also seen wearing a “staff” badge at the Clinton election night party.

While President Barack Obama was in office, Google kept a cozy relationship with the White House. Google representatives attended White House meetings more than once a week during the first seven years of Obama’s presidency, and almost 250 individuals left government service to work for Google or vice versa while Obama was in office. The Obama administration may also have squashed an antitrust investigation into the company.

Of course, the problem with Google extends well beyond Eric Schmidt. As the saga of James Damore showed, the political bias at Google is institutional.

Google’s nefarious activities should concern not just conservatives and Republicans, but every American who values free speech and a truly free and open internet.

Google’s broad and pervasive role in the lives of almost every American today cannot be overstated. More than 90 percent of all online searches are conducted through Google or YouTube. The media giant’s video-sharing site has 1 billion active users a month, many of whom go there to learn and share conservative ideas only to find their quest for knowledge subverted by faceless ideologues.

Google is clearly manipulating and controlling the political narrative in favor of Democrats and the left, and silencing conservatives and Republicans. A company with such power and influence cannot simply be allowed to play the biased gatekeeper of political discourse.

Americans who believe in a truly open society and internet won’t stand for it any longer. ##

Brad Parscale is the campaign manager for Donald J. Trump for President. Follow him on Twitter: @parscale

MHProNews has taken the editorial stance that the tech giants and Berkshire Hathaway should all be broken up under anti-trust laws.  As Pascale said above, the EU fined Google billions.  But to such a giant company, fines or regulation are a mere slap on the wrist. Nothing short of breaking up of these monopolies will serve the public interest, including that of manufactured housing professionals of any, none, or all political or other beliefs.

As a disclaimer, we remind readers that this author’s column appeared on the Trump presidential campaign site in 2016, during the primaries, and remained until after the election.

12ReasonsEducatedIranianAmericanWomanSupportsDonaldTrumpPostedMastheadBlogMHProNews954x846

While the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) paid for two pro-Clinton speakers in the closing days before the 2016 election, the Kovach family supported Donald J. Trump’s candidacy as the best for the industry, small business, and hundreds of millions of Americans. One of those stories ended up on the president’s campaign website, and hundreds of conservative and pro-Trump websites. In hindsight, it seems that the business man turned candidate and now president is keeping his campaign promises, and the economy is thriving again.

50 States Ranked by Income, Credit – Manufactured Housing Marketers Data, Cheet Sheet

While there could be a debate about the ranking of the 50 states by which is the hardest working, a far clearer picture emerges on the topics of ranking states by income and credit.

The reason?

Facts about income and credit scores are just facts.

HouseholdIncomebyStateByPercentageGroups2017ManufacturedHousingIndustryDataResearchReportsMHProNews

But the criteria selected by Wallet Hub, which certainly uses some objective data, nevertheless mixes metrics into an amalgamated score and ranking that some could certainly debate.  It’s interesting, and worth noting, because others are looking at it.  ICYMI, that report – which includes recent manufactured housing data, is linked below.

What data like this reflects is that manufactured housing professionals routinely report lower credit scores applying than those shown. That said, Triad Financials’ credit profile reflects higher credit scores than several of their counterparts. Good credit – as well as cash customers – are attracted to manufactured housing. But most retailers and communities need to step up their marketing and sales efforts to attract those better qualified buyers.

The Daily Business News on MHProNews noted on Saturday some of the reasons and considerations for manufactured home retailers and communities to consider factors like income in your local market(s).  That county-level report, is linked below.

Note that some of the sources – which are deemed reliable – came to different conclusions.  But that’s possible for potentially valid reasons.  For example, Experian’s data is presumably reliable for their own data pool, but other sources may have a different yet still accurate pool they are measuring from.

2018’s Hardest-Working States in America, How Does Your State Rank?

September 3rd, 2018 Comments off

2018HardestWorkingStatesAmericaHowDoesYourStateRankPxWalletHubDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Labor Day is as good a time as any to see how the fifty states rank in terms of which state workers are said to be harder workers, or less so.

The source of the data is Wallet Hub.  Here are some of the main metrics they used to determine their ranking.

WalletHubTopHardWorkingStatesMetricsfor50StatesRanking2018DailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Using those metrics above, here are the 50 states ranking, per Wallet Hub, from hardest working at the top, to the least hard working at the bottom.

WalletHubsTopHardWorkStates50StatesRankedChartByWorkerHoursMetrics

Wallet Hub also says, “Americans are hard workers, putting in an average of 1,783 hours per year, according to the World Economic Forum. That’s about 300 hours per year more than Germans work, but about 450 less than Mexicans do.

Even when given the chance to not work as hard, many Americans won’t. In fact, 52% of Americans didn’t use all of their available vacation days in 2017. However, while it may seem as if workers are happily pursuing the American Dream, many individuals’ reasons for working hard may not be so pleasant. Some fear that if they take time off they will look less dedicated to the job than other employees, risking a layoff. Others worry about falling behind on their work or worry that the normal workflow will not be able to function without them.”

The Daily Business News on MHProNews suggests is not endorsing the study or methodology.  Our team knows professionals in some supposedly low-ranking states that are hard workers by anyone’s definition. But this report is worth spotlighting, because it is one that mainstream media is touting once again this year.  WalletHub is a personal finance website.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® increased in August, following a modest increase in July. The Index now stands at 133.4 (1985=100), up from 127.9 in July. The Present Situation Index improved from 166.1 to 172.2, while the Expectations Index increased from 102.4 last month to 107.6 this month,” per the Conference Board in a statement to the Daily Business News on MHProNews.

Consumer confidence increased to its highest level since October 2000 (Index, 135.8), following a modest improvement in July,” said Lynn Franco.  Franco is the Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board. “Consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions improved further. Expectations, which had declined in June and July, bounced back in August and continue to suggest solid economic growth for the remainder of 2018. Albert Einstein, Zig Ziglar, Martha C. Nussbaum, and Manufactured Housing

There are those who mistakenly think they don’t understand the value of an honest critique

But the truth is that we all know the value of objective analysis, because we all rate things – be they spoken, written, expressed by 1 to 5 stars, social media likes, and the critiques one keeps to oneself.

The manufactured housing industry stands at the edge of great potential. That’s the logic from various third-party factoids found on Saturday’s Daily Business News report, linked below.

How does a manufactured housing industry professional, advocate or investor best tap into the potential of manufactured homes during this raging affordable housing crisis?

WeCannotsolveOurpRoblemsWiththeSameThinkingWeUsedWhenWeCreatedThemALbertEinsteinQuoteManufacturedHouusingIndustryMHProNews

In part, by understanding reality.

The ideal balance for achieving that reality check is SWOT.

SWOTAnalysisDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The four quads of a good SWOT analysis. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats.

Part of SWOT is identifying threats and weaknesses. Those who only do cheer leading are arguably hobbling progress.

TheFirstStepInSolvingAProblemIsToRecognizethatItDoesExistZigZiglarDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

SWOT is a critical analysis, using a different phrasing.

It’s like an employee evaluation, the more objective it is, the better. After all, the principle is that one gets more of what we encourage, and less of what we discourage, right?

 TurthSoundsLikeHateToThoseWhoHateTheTruthQuotePrismDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The truth or evidence can be disturbing, but usually it’s uncomfortable because it’s misunderstood, or due to someone being in denial.

No good parent or coach let’s a child or team mate keep making the same mistakes without guidance. No good doctor would fail to warn a patient about risks to life or limb.  All of those are examples of critiques.

The quotes from Martha C. Nussbaum, Albert Einstein, and Zig Ziglar are useful reality checks from respected minds, that come from a variety of disciplines.

For baseball or sports fans, Tony reminds me periodically of the Mickey Mantle quote shown.

What hall of famer Mickey Mantle said about baseball applies to manufactured housing too.

When an industry that has as much potential as manufactured housing has today  – and yet is still underperforming – there must to be objective reasons for it.

IfIHadAnHourToSolveAProblemIdSpend55MinutesThinkingAboutthePRoblemAnd5MinutesThinkingAboutsolutionsAlbertEinsteinquoteMHProNews

Objective analysis and critique are essentially for growing a business or location’s sales, and thus the industry to its potential.

The quotes shown remind readers that critique is useful, necessary, and – surprisingly! – positive, but only when it is properly viewed and understood.

Owners Report Increased Profits, Compensation, Expansion Plans

June 19th, 2018 Comments off

OwnersReportIncreasedProfit$CompensationandExpansionPlansPresCEOJuanitaDugganNIFBManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The Small Business Optimism Index increased in May to the second highest level in the NFIB survey’s 45-year history,” said the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) to the Daily Business News in a release. “The index rose to 107.8, a three-point gain, with small businesses reporting high numbers in several key areas including compensation, profits, and sales trends.”

Hundreds of manufactured housing firms are represented by the NFIB, as a source with the Washington, D.C. based organization told MHProNews in 2017.  All told, some 325,000 small businesses of all kinds are NFIB members.

Main Street optimism is on a stratospheric trajectory thanks to recent tax cuts and regulatory changes. For years, owners have continuously signaled that when taxes and regulations ease, earnings and employee compensation increase,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan.

The NFIB is celebrating 75 years serving as “the voice of small business.”

Their May 2018 report hit several records:

  • Compensation increases hit a 45-year high at a record net 35 percent.
  • Positive earnings trends reached a survey high at a net three percent.
  • Positive sales trends are at the highest level since 1995.
  • Expansion plans are the most robust in survey history.

Small business owners are continuing an 18-month streak of unprecedented optimism which is leading to more hiring and raising wages,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg.

Access to credit continues as a non-issue with 37 percent of owners reporting all credit needs were satisfied and 43 percent saying they were not interested in a loan, down seven points from last month and the lowest reading since 2007,” said NFIB. “Only one percent reported that financing was their top business problem. Owners planning to build inventories rose three points to a net four percent, the nineteenth positive reading in the past 20 months.”

NFIB was an important part of the coalition that supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)
