The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is out with its 2017 Small Business Tax Guide.

The free publication helps small business owners to identify what’s new for the 2016 tax year, and outlines some of the reforms that the organization expects to see over the next few months as President Donald Trump works to move his tax reform plans forward.

Tax reform that starts with small business is one of the keys to unleashing a strong American economy. Approximately 75 percent of small business owners are taxed at the individual tax rate, not the corporate tax rate, because their businesses are structured as pass-through entities,” said the NFIB in a statement.

Tax discrepancies between corporate and individual rates must be addressed in this once-in-a-generation window of opportunity. There is tremendous optimism for this new Congress to repair and simplify a tax code that is holding back our small business economy.

Each year, small business owners cite taxes as one of their top issues, due to ever changing rules and punitive rates.

We are very active on tax reform, one of our key priorities for 2017. President Trump and Congressional leadership agree that taxes are far too high for both pass-through businesses and C corporations. The tax code strongly favors large corporations. NFIB believes that no small business should be paying a higher tax rate than Exxon Mobil,” said NFIB CEO Juanita Duggan.

I have made it clear to Congress and the President’s team that tax reform starts with small business. Small business employs 58 million Americans and creates more than half of all jobs. If the purpose of tax reform is to grow the economy and create jobs, then it must focus on small business.

Duggan and the NFIB have been vocal and active leading up to, and after the election of President Trump, including a report last month about small business optimism being at it’s highest rate in 37 years.

We haven’t seen numbers like this in a long time,” said Duggan. “Small business is ready for a breakout, and that can only mean very good things for the U.S. economy. Business owners are feeling better about taking risks and making investments.

Enerdynamic Hybrid Technologies Corp. (EHT) provided an update this week on their Letter of Intent to build 50,000 homes in Ivory Coast for a branch of its military.

In a story covered by Daily Business News writer Matthew J. Silver on December 16th, Maple Leaf Holdings SA, of which EHT is a shareholder, was slated to construct two, three and four bedroom homes utilizing the company’s sustainable Advanced Modular Housing System for Foundation General Akissi, which provides military housing for the government.

EHT tells MHProNews that it was anticipated that the contract for the delivery of 50,000 homes would be finalized in January 2017 for a build-out of 10,000 home tranches with an update to be provided at that time.

As of January 30th, the company and the Foundation have started negotiations on the contracts necessary to begin the project and anticipate finalizing the agreement by early March. EHT has recently completed the installation of two fully equipped housing units, one off-grid/self-contained unit and the second configured as a net-metering system.

We were several weeks behind schedule in the completion of our sample units and the finalization of the contracts for this opportunity due to the holidays,” said EHT CEO John Gamble.

However, we remain confident in our product as well as in our ability to compete and win large housing contracts in West Africa as well as many similar projects around the globe.” ##

The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee has unanimously approved Dr. Ben Carson for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD.) His nomination now heads to the full Senate for a vote.

Manufactured housing also took center stage, as the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) tells MHProNews that Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) asked Dr. Carson to describe in writing his view of the role of manufactured housing in the provision of affordable housing in rural areas.

I do see manufactured housing playing an important role in providing affordable housing in rural areas. I think it’s important to ensure HUD’s policies promote access to this valuable resource,” said Carson.

After the vote by the senate, Carson will inherit an agency with 8,300 employees and a budget of about $47 billion.

According to WWLP, Committee Chairman Michael Crapo of Idaho praised Carson and his impressive career.

HUD will benefit from having a secretary with a different perspective and a diverse background,” said Crapo.

The committee advanced Carson’s nomination in a simple voice vote without major opposition from Senate Democrats, who are fighting other appointees of President Trump.

Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, the leading Democrat on the panel, said he was supporting Carson because of his commitments to address lead hazards, uphold fair housing laws and advocate for rental assistance, despite his reservations.

I would not have chosen him because of his lack of experience and his often troubling public statements over the last three years,” said Brown.

But despite my reservations and my disagreements with some of his positions, I’ll give Dr. Carson the benefit of the doubt.”

Prior to the vote, Brown proposed unsuccessfully that the committee begin requiring Cabinet-level nominees to submit three years of tax returns before confirmation hearings.

Republicans opposed the change.

Our extensive coverage on the nomination and confirmation of Dr. Ben Carson includes four former HUD Secretaries endorsing Carson and an open letter from MHProNews and MHLivingNews Publisher L.A. “Tony” Kovach.
