LinkedIn is a useful tool in several respects, one which thousands of manufactured home industry professionals enjoy.

While Facebook certainly has more MH professional users, LinkedIn provides a different look, feel, features, and experience.

Social media in many respects is ‘public,’ so on publicly posted messages, there is no expectation of privacy.  But so as not to discourage industry comments in social media, this Daily Business News on MHProNews item will not spotlight specific names in this post.

On a recent post by MHProNews on LinkedIn, a self-described Clayton Homes devote protested our coverage of a specific article that featured a mainstream media report by an ABC News affiliate.

That’s fine, it is her right, and our publisher thanked her for her comments. In fact, it sparked a useful discussion, worth reading. Let’s begin with the back ground.

ABC video reflected significant service problems on a manufactured home sold by one of their TRU producers.  As our publisher – L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach – explained to that pro-Clayton industry professional on LinkedIn, this trade publication has for years done fact-checks, analysis and commentary on mainstream media reports about other companies in manufactured housing.  Perhaps she didn’t carefully read that article or view that video, because the video was used in part to turn lemons into lemonade.

Clayton is therefore no exception to our coverage of problems attributed to an industry company that has drawn mainstream media attention, and/or our analysis of such coverage and news.  As the largest producer and retailing company in our industry, Clayton no doubt gets more such coverage, but that is true in mainstream media too.

How Hot Is That Clayton Homes Story?

That story about Clayton’s service complaints is far and away the most popular read on MHProNews at this moment in October.  To understand the following data, as we’ve explained previously, MHProNews has numerous URLs and several C-panels.  Each of those has their own unique statistics and traffic. So, when we reveal ‘back end’ data, this is from only one c-panel, not all of them.  Rephrased, what follows is a fraction of the traffic, not all MHProNews traffic.

Per Webalizer – a third-party analytics provider – here is the data from one C-panel for our trade media site, as of Generated 08-Oct-2018 07:02 CDT.  The first number reflects the rank on that article on our website, the second the hits on that article, and the third rectangular box is the URL.

Clayton Homes Ripped by Customer Complaints Spotlighted on ABC News

Comparisons help someone get a better sense of that traffic. To give you a sense of just how hot that is, another Clayton article from September – for the entire month, not just 7.3 days, produced the following hit count. Again, the first is rank on our website from that URL at that time, the second is hits, the third is the URL.

“Toxic Trailers” – Clayton Homes, Warren Buffett, Kevin Clayton, Clintons – Exposé Videos

MHInsiderManufacturedHousingINdustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsNote that either of those data-points arguably reflects more readers than any other trade publication in manufactured housing today. MHProNews gets more readers in a day, than other MH trade publishers in our industry might garner in an entire month for all of their content.  The photo of MH Insider that is shown is just one way of reflecting that reality.

Take Aways?

First, while there are routinely occasions when:

  • via social media, or in
  • calls and messages to MHProNews
  • gets feedback for, against or in between on a particular article.
  • There is often significant interest in articles on Clayton, 21st, Vanderbilt, their leaders and Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett.

Second, articles that fact-check the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) also get thousands of hits, as do a number of others every month. Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) reports gets thousands of hits, and the MHARR News module often gets 5 figures of hits.  MHI stopped providing articles directly to MHProNews some years ago (note: they did to the Journal as well, prior to their ceasing publication), but others often provide them, for the purposes of fact-checks.

One obvious takeaway is that thousands of industry professionals want to have information other than what is sanitized or weaponized by MHI, Clayton, 21st and their purportedly ‘bought and paid for’ trade media allies.

As MHProNews – which has long been the number #1 trade media in manufactured housing – is often the only source for such reports, analysis and fact-checks, it is no surprise that ‘inquiring minds want to know.’  Others print items of interest, but debatably the reason that we dominate is because we cover topics and issues that others can’t, don’t or won’t.

As a result, MHProNews traffic has more than doubled since November of 2017, both in visits daily and in page views, as the Webalizer screen capture below reflects.  Again, this is one of numerous URLs – only one C-panel of statistics, a fraction of total MHProNews traffic, not all traffic.

2018-10-08_1115WebalizerDataDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

People want a full range of news, not just MHI hand-picked news. One reason why MHARR and MHProNews are so popular, is precisely because information that readers won’t get from MHI, are found here. On federal regulatory issues, the MHARR website covers insights in a very different way – fact and evidence based – than what MHI presents on a similar topic.

Why Does It Matter?

That community professional’s LinkedIn comments were largely polite, and ostensibly at her own initiative. When Tony asked her after the industry was broken off after the post linked below with Clayton, 21st et al, or would it be better off if those giants were broken up under anti-trust laws

The industry gets MHI and their ‘big boy’ backers news shoved down their throats from several third parties, and/or directly. MHI provides no diversity of opinion. When we provide MHI, Clayton or others a chance to respond, their responses are routinely off the record, not on, if they come at all.

Clayton Homes Consumer Complaints Saga Continues, Mold and More

Off-the-record replies from Clayton Homes team members on this ABC news controversy are found at the link above.  Keep in mind, that in the regrettably smaller world of manufactured housing, negative news that hits them, often unjustly spills over to others in the industry.

It arguably matters to the bottom line of independents and others, even if you don’t carry Clayton product.  Hopefully, by spotlighting them, they’ll not only address this consumer’s concerns, but others before they hit the mainstream media to further impair the industry’s public image.

Note that MHProNews has also raised the issue that conventional housing can have similar problems on homes that are often many times the cost of a manufactured home.  See the related reports, linked further below.

We’ll close this by noting that industry professionals feedback is encouraged, as are topic suggestions and news tips.  Several stories that we do are published because of tips from readers. “We Provide, You Decide.”  © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Professional, Investor Alert “Brace Yourself, This is How Much America’s 1 Percent Has Saved”

August 27th, 2018 Comments off

ProInvestorAlertTheBillionairesBraceYourselfHowMuchAmericasTop1PercentHasSavedDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Are you a business owner, executive or manager?  Do you have assets that make you a millionaire?

Or do you aspire to be in the 1 percent?

Then this alert is for you.

The potentially costly politics of class envy are on full display in the headline of an article on MarketWatch, which will be reviewed herein.  Notice for the minority of those who’ve been misled into believing that MHProNews hates billionaires, au contraire. We applaud success, and always have, so long as the wealth is achieved legally, ethically and sustainably.

The system as it has functioned for much of the recent decades is frankly not sustainable.  Teddy Roosevelt busted the trusts – i.e. monopolies – in his era.  Are we ready to see “trust busting” again?

What’s the Best Way to Lift Americans out of Poverty?

Properly understood, free enterprise – as opposed to monopolistic capitalism – is the single best way to lift people from poverty.

More to the manufactured housing point, those who have legitimate access to an affordable home arguably have the best opportunity for wealth creation. That case was launched a couple of months ago on Value Penguin, at the link here.  An even  more robust look is found at the link below.

FEAR, a Solution to the Affordable Housing Crisis, and the Manufactured Home Dilemma

Where Left and Right Can Meet

But there are those, most usually on the economic and political left, that make all capitalism and wealth sound evil.  That doesn’t mean that left and right can’t find common ground.

The surprising reality is that left-to-right, a common sense path exists for creating wealth through a proper understanding of basic economics, and a proper application of lending, land and access to manufactured homes.

It must be recalled that many of the wealthiest are at least publicly the most ‘liberal’ or left-leaning “progressives,” who often support Democratic candidates. If they are sincere believers in what they proclaim or not is another question. Millions of Democratic and some independent voters have been led to believe that some of the world’s richest living here in the U.S. favor higher taxes.  Hmmm, those billionaires posture for the left as if they want to tax themselves the more? Really?

Does anyone recall just a few weeks ago the pressure that Amazon’s Jeff Bezos put on the City of Seattle to rescind a head tax on employees?

We are not at all defending plan in Seattle, which was supposed to fund a program aimed at alleviating homelessness.  The point is that Billionaire Bezos’ company blocked it. Other examples could be given for Warren Buffett or other billionaires in the faces shown above, which reflects that they may say one thing, but in fact routinely do another.

That’s not to slam to all billionaires.  It is only to say that for some their behavior doesn’t always match up with what they claim.

Who are the Top 1 Percent? Are You in MHVille Among the Top 1 Percent?

In 2015, using 2010 data, Quora said that the “number of US households was 117 million so there were 1,170,000” households that are in the top 1 percent.  $430,600.00 is what that translates to in dollars, per the summary below.

TopIncomeEarnersDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

So, there are thousands in manufactured housing that qualify for a fact-based definition of the top 1 percent.

When you watch protestors denouncing the top 1 percent, that’s a figure that over a million American households has achieved, and arguably what thousands more could achieve in the manufactured housing profession.

Now, with that backdrop, let’s look at what Quentin Fottrell wrote for MarketWatch, that MSN (Bing, i.e. Microsoft) wants you to spend time reading.

SmokingCigarTop1PercentMarketWatch

The median American household currently holds just $11,700 in savings, according to a new analysis of Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data by personal-finance site Magnify Money. Median balances (the midpoint value) are lower than the average savings rates. The top 1% of households in the U.S. by income have a median savings of $1.1 million across a variety of saving accounts. The bottom 20% by income have no savings accounts and the second lowest 20% income earners have just $26,450 saved,” wrote Fottrell

AverageMedianSavingsofTop1Percent%MarketWatchDailyBusinessNewsMHproNewsThe average savings in retirement, money market deposit, checking and savings and certificate of deposit accounts are skewed by higher earners with more money. The top 1% of households have an average of $2.5 million in accounts, while the bottom 20% of households have an average of $8,870 saved. To put that in context: The average household has $277,670 in retirement accounts and $4,830 in savings accounts, while the median household only has $72,840 in retirement accounts and $32,130 in savings accounts,” said Fottrell.

AverageMedianSavingsLevelsByIncomeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Stagnant wages, student debt, soaring house prices and rising credit-card debt have not helped people save,” per that same MarketWatch column. “Lots of families are living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to save even a little,” said Caroline Ratcliffe, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, a nonprofit policy group based in Washington, D.C. “Limited savings isn’t only an issue for low-income families. Quite a few middle- and high-income families have no savings cushion to fall back on. One in 5 middle-income families and 1 in 10 high-income families have no retirement savings.”

MedianHouseholdAccountSizeDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

QuentinFottrellMarketwatcWallStreetJournalIrishTimesDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Now first, the data here is somewhat contradicted by other data, include the chart we posted above.

You may recall HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s often-repeated statement in 2017 that the average homeowner household had a net worth of some $200,000, while the average renter household only had $5,000 in net worth.

But set the anomalies in the respective data aside.

The question should be — what policies would honestly bring more wealth to more people?

What recent Daily Business News reports revealed is that 50 years of the “War On Poverty” launched by Democratic President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) has cost the nation some $22 trillion dollars, per Heritage.  That’s roughly equal to all of the national debt.

UCDavisUnitedStatesPovertyRateSince1959to2015DailyBusinessNewsMHProNews_001

Yet, poverty rates – while vacillating – have barely moved from when those programs and others since have been launched. Why does the nation pour billions every year into programs that are proven not to work?

The evidence reveals this. The way to wealth creation for the majority is a combination of regulatory and tax and policy changes that allow more Americans to sustainably buy their own home.

The value of that home should be protected against estate (i.e. death) taxes.  That would boost wealth for the working women and men of America.

Let the workers and middle class buy an affordable home, which existing laws related to manufactured homes – if applied – would make reasonably easy.

Two Great Laws Already on the Books NOW,  Can Unlock Billion$ Annually for Manufactured Housing Industry Businesse$, Investor$

That can be done in a demonstrably sustainable fashion.

AmericanBankersUrgedToLendMoreonManufacturedHOmesDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Click here or above to see the report.

What left, right and independents ought to be able to agree upon is this. Giving more citizens a path to home ownership, which existing laws could easily be done with manufactured homes, is a sure path for raising the standard of living for tens of millions in the USA.

That’s the ticket that Warren Buffett ought to be promoting, instead of his moat. So why isn’t he doing so?

Regardless of what Mr. Buffett does or doesn’t do, tens of thousands of industry professionals – regardless of political affiliation or the lack thereof – should support:

  • the robust application of enhanced preemption,
  • a reform of the 10/10 rule on FHA Title 1 lending,
  • and should push the GSEs into a true support for manufactured housing, instead of the fig leaf programs they have put in place.

The closing note is this.  The answer in November isn’t to vote for those who support redistribution of the wealth. That’s a proven and failed approach that ballooned the debt.

A combination of trust-busting of:

  • Berkshire-Hathaway,
  • Apple,
  • Microsoft,
  • Alphabet (Google/YouTube, etc.)
  • Amazon, and
  • Facebook

plus a robust application of enhanced preemption and existing lending laws could raise millions of Americans from poverty to prosperity.  That’s how existing laws and free enterprise could be used in an ethical and sustainable manner.

Professionals, owners, and investors, it pays to help your fellow Americans understand the truth about socialism and America’s historic style of free enterprise. To be clear, crony capitalism and free enterprise are not the same thing.

Trust-busting and a level economic playing field are as American as apple pie, and the dream of home ownership.  That’s “News through the lens of manufactured homes, and factory-built housing” © where “We Provide, You Decide.” ©. ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Factoid. If you look at the home page of MHProNews on Sunday Morning, it will look like what you see on this tablet screen shot, above.

Meshuggeneh

We were checking out at Walmart last night after dinner.  The woman who was ringing up our order was lightly conversing with my husband and family.  She was commenting on something the previous lady in line had said before leaving with her new goodies.  The lady at the register said to us, “What would my rabbi think about that?”  Without missing a beat, Tony said, “He’d likely think it would be Meshuggeneh.”

The woman looked with surprised delight, but apparently made the quick judgement that we were not Jewish.  “Yes, you’re right.  But how do you know what that means?”  “Because we have a number of Jewish friends and colleagues,” Tony replied, and in moments he and our son Tamas were both singing a few lines from Fiddler on the Roof to that woman’s amazement and joy.

The word “Meshuggah” is defined by the Free Dictionary like this: “Adj. 1. meshugga – senseless; crazy. meshuga, meshugge, meshuggeneh, meshuggener. Yiddish – a dialect of High German including some Hebrew and other words; spoken in Europe as a vernacular by many Jews; written in the Hebrew script.”  It’s use was perfectly suited for the occasion, and the exchanged clearly lifted the spirits of that woman — who doesn’t know us, and we did not know her save for those few minutes at a register.

There are times when the right words – including lyrical words – can bring joy, inspiration, comfort, or insight to others. Words can harm, and words can heal.

As trade publishers, it is never our intent to harm another, quite the opposite is true.

Journalism and trade journalism are relatives, but they are not precisely the same thing.

There is journalism for a cause, so-called agenda journalism.  Many in media try their hands at that, and to a degree, in as much as we advocate for this or that as a means of advancing manufactured housing in an editorial way, it would be fair to say that MHProNews and MHLivingNews have an agenda too. Every genuine trade media is a kind of de facto advocate for their respective cause or industry.

Ours agenda is out in the open. We want to see manufactured housing advance. Everything else, as my spouse might say, are details and commentary. During an affordable housing crisis, when the industry has done as much as 5 to 6 times higher levels of new manufactured home sales in the past, why isn’t the industry doing much better today?

Day by day, article by article, we strive to provide insights that address those kinds of opportunities and concerns.

Life can take surprising turns.

Neither Tony nor I imagined at the start of our studies and early careers that the course on our lives would bring us into manufactured housing.

My training was in medicine, and I’d been certified here in the U.S., and in a European nation, and my motherland too. Tony began his years of college studies in history, with a journalism scholarship, and a minor in business. As a medical scientist, I strive to look at things clinically. Tony uses decades of hands-on industry involvement in retail, communities, with lenders and producers, all aided by the lens of his education and other life experiences.

We naturally influence each other, as we aim to inform (and be informed by) you and the thousands of industry professionals, investors, and researchers who will check in today to read this among the total of 6.7 pages they will read on average before they go.

DisneySpringsTamasKovachPoliceSheriffsFirstRespondersDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

A child with serious medical conditions will altar your life’s paths. But what a joy it is to embrace life, including the challenges that life will always bring.  As thousands in MHVille know, Tamas travels with us to trade shows and other industry events.

Depending on the time of year, and what’s going on in the industry, page views per reader can go as high as 9 per visit.

But even our most recent third-party data demonstrates that our readers are twice as engaged as the average mainstream media news site (by comparison, mainstream news gets about 3.3 page views per reader). Wow, we have double the engagement – or more – than mainstream news readers get. Our sincere thank you to all who make that possible.

Webalizer and Alexa are among the sources of our traffic insights, and third-party data tells us that no other trade publication even comes close to us in the manufactured housing trade media field. Again, thank you. By the way, it was a challenge from George Allen who suggested that we generate this third-party data report.  We listen to a wide range of readers, and often respond to, readers comments, though not always instantly.

There are a handful of bigger websites than ours in what Tony likes to fondly call MHVille or HUDVille. But no one even comes close in MH trade media websites, or apparently in published MH media too.  These are facts. No one else in MH media even bothers to share their trade site or readership data. NOTE: It’s not how many of what you print, it is what gets read that counts.

That’s one of several ways that third-party data comes in handy.

Why are we successful, and have a MH Professional audience as wide and deep as we do?

Fair questions.

First, we provide professional services to the industry, so we aren’t sitting in some ivory tower. We know factory-crafted homes from the ground up. Tony began award-winning, record-setting work in MH retail in the 1980s.  He later shifted to working with lenders on remarketing, and then with land-lease MH Communities (MHC) and producers.  In the industry’s trade media, it’s unlikely that anyone in MH history has interviewed more people than we have: actual manufactured home owners, numerous industry professionals, experts, and others who touch or connect with manufactured and modular home building.

Next, we curate topics that ought to have meaning for you, industry professionals, investors, policy advocates, and other kinds of researchers.  Thus, it should be no surprise when a number of articles here get over ten thousand hits or more in their first month online on MHProNews. Millions of page-views in a year can yield the kind of statistics that generated the following factoid.

The industry needs inspiration as well as fair warnings, and de facto morality tales. We are guided day-by-day with input from industry readers from across the range of businesses of all sizes.  The Daily Business News gathers input from a variety of sources, including:

  • insights and interactions with members and staffs of trade associations,
  • the federal government,
  • state or local officials,
  • mainstream media,
  • experts in various fields, and much more.

Yes, we have typos, as detractors like to note, but we also bring the industry’s most read, most discussed, and hardest-hitting articles. Tony says, “chaff and wheat.”  Keep the good grain, please pardon any keystroke or autocorrection-caused glitch.  Please pardon as needed, and keep in mind that for me, English is my third language.  Keep in mind too that we are doing more articles than all others combined between doing other services for various members of the industry.

We’re not aiming for the politically correct. We call it as we see it, but not for the sake of mere clickbait.

We are willing to expose what is necessary – the underlying factors that are holding our great industry back from achieving its potential for solving the massive, and growing affordable housing crisis.

We are willing to name-names, and point fingers, when there is evidence to make a claim.

We are evidence- and principle-based writers, with analysis informed by decades of hands-on experience in manufactured housing.

We’re mindful that every article gets read by thousands, many of whom will make decisions about manufactured housing related issues.

When third-party researchers, the federal government, others in mainstream media read, cite or quote our work, that all says something.  When certain voices in MHVille attack us (usually, quietly), that says something too. When the naysayers won’t debate publicly, that definitely tells you something’s amiss.  If they thought the facts were on their side, why not discuss them publicly?

Doing anything less than giving you actionable insights based upon reality – when during this U.S. affordable housing crisis our potential as an industry could be 5 to 10 times more business  – could debatably be called Meshuggeneh.

ADP Jobs Report for May Released

June 1st, 2017 Comments off

The numbers are in… Credit: MHProNews.

The monthly private payroll jobs report from ADP and Moody’s Analytics was released today, and it appears that President Donald Trump’s “America First” plans are taking shape.

According to CNBC, job creation surged in May thanks to a jump in construction positions and a boom in professional and business services, up 253,000, which is significantly higher than the expectations from economists surveyed by Reuters, which projected a number of 185,000.

The growth is three times the rate of the growth in the underlying labor force,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics.

So that means the unemployment rate, which is 4.4 percent, is quickly headed to 4 percent. This labor market is rip-roaring and getting really tight.”

Leading the way in jobs created was the services sector, with 205,000 new jobs, professional and business services contributing 88,000 jobs, which represents the best month for the sector in nearly three years, and education and health services adding 54,000 jobs.

The report noted that the construction sector added 37,000 jobs as the building season heats up, while manufacturing grew by 8,000 jobs and mining grew by 3,000 jobs.

As Daily Business News readers are aware, the mining sector has been one of the cornerstones of President Trump’s agenda.

Trade, transportation and utilities added 58,000 new jobs, and franchises add 18,400 new workers.

The positive report comes at a time where economists are doubtful that the Trump administration can deliver on its goal of three percent annual GDP growth, in part because the labor market is near full employment.

The report from ADP and Moody’s Analytics are regular precursors to the nonfarm payrolls count from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Economists estimate that payroll growth will come in around 176,000, down from the previous month’s 211,000.

The Proof is in the Pudding…

The President and First Lady visit Saudi Arabia. 300 billion in deals were completed during the visit. Credit: The White House.

As the Daily Business News covered in a feature story recently, while President Trump continues to make progress, including the lowest unemployment rate in decades, and the highest consumer, business confidence, and homebuilder confidence numbers in years, along with over $300 billion in deals with Saudi Arabia, what ELS Chairman Sam Zell colorfully called a “cacophony” of Deep State resistance has moved into high gear.

Even with that Deep State resistance, NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan, and industry organizations like MHARR, talked about the potentially massive impact that the Trump Administration could have.

Small business owners are clearly encouraged by the election results, but now it’s time for President-elect Trump and congressional leaders to deliver,” said Duggan.

Federal taxes, regulations, and Obamacare are the three biggest impediments to running a small business in America. Small business owners have high expectations that those problems will be addressed.”

MHProNews_Sunday morning recap of week's stories postedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

On this celebration of our 7th year of uninterrupted factory-crafted housing trade media publishing, we begin the month with this thought-provoking theme: Obstacles and Opportunities in Affordable Housing – October 2016.

Manufactured, modular and prefabricated home professionals know that how a home got to its location should not define a person or their dwelling.

What we in the Daily Business News spotlight, day by day, are the tragedies, triumphs and struggles for acceptance of the obvious solution for millions for the growing affordable housing crisis in the U.S. and beyond.

Day after day, we strive to live up to the twin taglines of our original and new logos:

When you read the lineup for the month found on Obstacles and Opportunities in Affordable Housing – October 2016, you can reflect on another motto as you chart your own professional path ahead:We Provide, You Decide.”
