Senator Cory Booker – ‘We Need a President…to Enforce Antitrust Laws,’ Digging Warren, POTUS Trump

I don’t care if it’s Facebook, the pharma industry, even the agricultural industry. We’ve had a problem in America with corporate consolidation that is having really ill effects,” New Jersey Senator and 2020 Democratic Nomination contender Cory Booker said in an interview for ABC News “This Week.”

 

It’s driving out the independent family farmers. It’s driving up prescription drug costs. And in the realm of technology, we’re seeing…one or two companies controlling a significant amount of the online advertising.” he continued.  Booker’s comments come on the heels of Facebook’s co-founder and former chief executive Chris Hughes’ publicly calling for the breakup of Facebook, see that and other former FB insiders comments, linked here.

Tens of thousands of manufactured home industry professionals use Facebook daily.  But the issue of controlling wide swaths of media, or other antitrust concerns that impact manufactured housing, are far broader.

It should be noted that Big Tech, including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg are more routinely saying to federal officials, ‘regulate us.’ But as deeply-focused, regular, and longtime MHProNews readers know, that call for ‘regulation’ can be akin to big banks getting ‘regulated’ by Dodd-Frank.  The consequences of Dodd-Frank and the regulations that flowed from it were that smaller lenders got driven out.

Rephrased, a giant firm can better handle regulations, which pushes out smaller ones.  Thus FB’s and Zuckerberg’s – or any other similar call for regulation vs. antitrust law breakup – can properly be seen as a ruse that simply won’t work in practice as it is being promoted.  It’s a false flag solution to a real and pressing issue of the growing monopolization of America.  It is possible to posture opposing a big company, but de facto take an action that helps it, rather than controls or breaks it up.

If I’m president of the United States, I will have a Justice Department that uses antitrust legislation to do the proper investigations and to hold industries accountable for corporate consolidation,” Senator Booker said to ABC’s Jonathan Karl.

Booker said he believes in “process,” and in this ABC News video delivered a not too subtle elbow at both fellow Democratic contender, Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA-D) as well as GOP President Donald J. Trump.

In early March, fellow 2020 Democratic candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren called for the breakup of Facebook, Amazon and Google. MHProNews and MHLivingNews have spotlighted Warren’s more aggressive posture on antitrust than some of her fellow Democrats.

As these companies have grown larger and more powerful, they have used their resources and control over the way we use the internet to squash small businesses and innovation, and substitute their own financial interests for the broader interests of the American people,” the Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote. “To restore the balance of power in our democracy, to promote competition and to ensure that the next generation of technology innovation is as vibrant as the last, it’s time to break up our biggest tech companies.”

The arguments being made by these and some other Democratic and GOP voices could be applied to Berkshire Hathaway, Clayton Homes, and their top manufactured home lenders.  It could be applied to Microsoft.  Thus an apt battle cry could be #DeFaangBM. Break up the FAANG companies, plus Berkshire and Microsoft.  These are important places to start the restoration of a more truly free marketplace in the U.S.

Booker said he doesn’t “think that a president should be running around, pointing at companies and…breaking them up without any kind of process here.”

It’s not me and my own personal opinion about going after folks. That sounds more like a Donald Trump thing to say, like, ‘I’m going to break up you guys, I’m gonna break’ — no.” He deflected the point that it was Senator Warren saying that, not President Trump. “Well, that’s what she’s saying. She’s the one that’s saying that,” ABC’s Karl said.

Booker deflected, saying it was up to Senator Warren to discuss her positions.

I’m telling you right now, we do not need a president that is going to use their own personal beliefs and tell you which companies we should break up,” he said. We need a president that’s going to enforce antitrust laws in this country, and I will be that person.”

 

 

Given the crowded nature of the 2020 field, with about 21 Democrats currently in contention, and Howard Schultz possibly moving towards an independent run, hopeful’s like Booker are looking for media oxygen as well as financial support to sustain their White House ambitions.

 

The Issue of Antitrust, America, and MHVille

Both sides of the major party political aisle have allowed antitrust laws to languish, certainly since the 1990s.  As it is becoming obvious to both the left and the right, there are increasing calls to act in a way that will benefit the economy, jobs, and ultimately the vast majority of the people. President Trump’s White House let it be know that an executive order on antitrust was drafted last year. His campaign manager has also talked about the threat posed by big tech. See more on that, in the related reports, below the bylines, notices, and offers.

While POTUS Trump has not yet acted, in fairness, it was only recently that the Mueller report came out, which lifted the cloud of baseless ‘Russian collusion’ that acted as a drag on his presidency, especially during his first year in office. It now remains to be seen what he will do with the remaining two years of what he hopes will be his first of two terms at the helm in D.C.

Given the significant extent to which consolidation has been impacting manufactured housing independents and manufactured home community residents in recent years, the interest in this issue is and should be high among industry professionals.

It is difficult to imagine how an investor or professional in manufactured housing can begin to properly grasp the market without having a firm handle on the trends toward monopolization.  That means one must also understand what are the root causes of that trend.  The related reports reveal that it is an issue that spans the left-right divide.  There is oddly no one else in manufactured housing trade media that focuses on this issue, perhaps because they are de facto mouthpieces for the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis?

Warren Buffett Wades Into Politics, Why Not John Oliver’s Piece on “Mobile Homes?”

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett is once again wading into the topic of politics,” according to CNBC in an article linked here.

 

The article is entitled, “Warren Buffett wants to ask the 2020 presidential candidates this 1 question.” The Daily Business News on MHProNews will explore that as our focus for this post, but first we will ask this question. Since Buffett surely must know about John Oliver’s blast at him and his company, why didn’t he wade into that topic too?  You can learn more and – see the Oliver video with a withering fact-check – at the link below.

Or was Oliver’s comedic hit on Buffett, Clayton Homes, and numbers of key members of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) too challenging a topic for the Oracle of Omaha to delve into?  Is Oliver’s hit a shark in the water, launched by MHAction, which a money trail reflects has had funding from Buffett backed entities?

We’ll let those questions hang for industry professionals, investors, and advocates, as we unpacked part of what CNBC reported on the Solon of Stocks who hails from Omaha wants to ask 2020 candidates.

The following bullets are pull quotes from CNBC’s article, linked above.

  • Buffett, who supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election and has previously weighed in on whether or not executives like Michael Bloomberg or former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz would make good candidates, said in a recent interview that there is one question he would want to ask the field of candidates planning to run for the White House in 2020.
  • I want to hear what they tell people who disagree with them,” Buffett told Yahoo Finance on Monday. “I would like to ask a candidate: ‘What are you for that the majority of your followers are against?’” That’s the best way to be sure that a candidate really believes in a particular issue, according to Buffett. “That’s really the test,” he says in the interview.
  • Those comments from Buffett came in response to a question about whether the billionaire would ever ask a candidate what they think about the economy or other issues. Buffett laughs and points out that any candidate would probably just “tell me what I want to hear” to win his support, which is not what the billionaire would want.
  • For Buffett, being strong-minded but having enough respect to hear out someone with a different opinion or point of view is a positive thing.

Let’s stop right there for now. We’ve asked the Berkshire brands in MHVille, and their purported national mouthpiece, the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) to apply a standard quite like that last bullet from their boss, Buffett.

For years, Jim and Kevin Clayton, Tim Williams at 21st, top or mid-range MHI officials – they all responded to our MHProNews inquiries, often within the hour. About 2 years ago, all of that stopped.  Which begs the question, why? Why not reply to the manufactured home industry’s most read trade media?  Why not apply this Buffett rule outlined in this CNBC interview of direct, respectful engagement?  Or of listening carefully to what the other side has to say?

Here are more bullets from the same read-hot, and ‘trending’ CNBC piece.

  • For example, Buffett and his Berkshire Hathaway right hand man Charlie Munger, “disagree on a few things,” Buffett told CNBC in 2018, and that’s often been helpful.

 

  • Charlie, he’s given me a lot of good advice over time,” Buffett told CNBC in a 2016 interview. “And, I may hate to take it to a certain degree, but sometimes — but my decisions have been better. I’ve lived a better life because of Charlie.”

 

  • Billionaire Ray Dalio also thinks listening to those who disagree with you is essential. It’s a hallmark of the culture that Dalio has created at his hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, which he calls “radical transparency.”

 

  • I just wanted to see things through [employees’] eyes and to have them see things through my eyes so that together we could hash things out to discover what’s true,” Dalio said.

 

  • Billionaire tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel also likes to ask a similar questionto Buffett’s when interviewing job candidates: “What important truth do very few people agree with you on?”

 

 

  • The question is more difficult to answer than you might think, Thiel writes in his book, “Zero to One,” as it requires candidates to show both creative thinking skills as well as the courage to voice an unpopular opinion.

 

  • It’s intellectually difficult because the knowledge that everyone is taught in school is by definition agreed upon,” according to Thiel. “And, it’s psychologically difficult because anyone trying to answer must say something she knows to be unpopular.”

 

  • Meanwhile, Buffett identifies Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders as one presidential candidate who would not be afraid to answer Buffett’s question about unpopular views he holds. Buffett tells Yahoo Finance that Sanders’ followers see him as “authentic,” adding: “if you asked him you what he was for, that most people might be against, he would tell you.”

It is important to be fair and balanced. This video has had some 1.6 million views since it was first posted on YouTube on Mar 3, 2017, almost 2 years ago.

 

To be precise, there have been 1,603,008 views as of the time of this Daily Business News on MHProNews post. It should be self-evident that the frame for this narrative is a positive one.  After all, how do you get access to interviewing the world’s currently 3rd most wealthy man without some assurance that the video you will produce is going to be a positive?

Here’s what the video page says: “Known as the “Oracle of Omaha,” Buffett is one of the most successful investors of all time. His Berkshire Hathaway owns more than 60 companies, including Geico, Duracell and Dairy Queen. The son of a U.S. congressman, he first bought stock at age 11 and first filed taxes at age 13. He has committed to giving more than 99% of his fortune to charity. So far he has given $28.5 billion. With friend Bill Gates, he launched The Giving Pledge, asking billionaires to donate their wealth.”

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.”

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we’ve come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

We cannot walk alone.

And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.

We cannot turn back.

There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. **We cannot be satisfied as long as the negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: “For Whites Only.”** We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until “justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”1

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. And some of you have come from areas where your quest — quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “interposition” and “nullification” — one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”2

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:

My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,    From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Manufactured housing professionals use Google and Facebook for work and personally every day by the thousands.

Further, millions of manufactured home residents are doing the same.

Perhaps the most pressing, there is only one political force that is likely to take on this problem with anything might approach a solution.  These points are the ones that no one else in mainstream media are likely to mention, but will be the conclusion of this report on the subject of the raw power that Google and Facebook exercise in the U.S. and globally.

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it,” per the summary/review on Rotten Tomatoes.

As former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said during a 2010 interview as he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day.”

The Verge’s review makes the movie sound too political.

 

But Epstein explains during the video that he believed the person in the 2016 election that was benefiting from search engine bias was the more “qualified” candidate. Epstein explains how he was drawn into his research into the “Creepy Line” by inexplicable action taken by Google.

Further the Verge made several salient points. “It [the video] takes its title from Google executive Eric Schmidt, who said in 2010 that Google’s job was to “get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.” Schmidt has gotten no end of flack for that quote, and it’s easy to point out that Google is, in fact, often very creepy.”

The Verge’s review says, that “This theory [the premise of the documentary “the Creepy Line”] has been fueled by news about political discussions within companies — like Google’s internal controversy over employee James Damore, who was fired after circulating a memo criticizing the company’s gender diversity efforts. Breitbart recently published a leaked video from a Google meeting just after the 2016 election of Donald Trump, which includes co-founder Sergey Brin calling Trump’s presidency “deeply offensive.”

It’s the Verge that points out the push from across Democratic and Republican party lines for antitrust action against Google and Facebook.

CNS lays out one of several reasons how these experts discovered the problem, in a personal way. “Jordan Peterson,” a “professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, Peterson discovered a day after his testimony against a controversial Canadian law suppressing free speech regarding gender that his YouTube account and Google gmail account had been blocked.”

 

Manufactured Home Industry Pros and Rigged Searches – A.K.A. “Search Bias”

This isn’t just a search challenge in political issues, because it can happen in business too.  There are industry pros who have told MHProNews that sites that once had better search results suddenly and dramatically took a turn for the worse.

 

 

If a monopoly of money and information can influence politics, it can clearly influence businesses too.

“…Epstein’s arguments are delivered in detail by a first-hand source,” but the Verge points out that other headlines and a variety of sources are used throughout the powerful documentary that even Rotten Tomatoes says is “eye opening.”  The Verge defends Google by saying that yes, they are biased, but that bias “is complicated.”

This is at the heart of the issue that we’ve been reporting on periodically for some time, which has included the work of Scott Galloway, who argues that regulation isn’t enough.  He and others believe that these tech giants must be broken up.

Millions could care less about politics. Many don’t want to talk about religion either. Especially those in business, who want to be able to serve as many people as possible, topics like that are almost a taboo.

Then there is “industry politics.”  Some only want to hear ‘good news.’  ‘We keep it positive’ was part of a longer thread of messages from an industry blogger.

Isn’t that like not wanting to know when it will rain, hail, snow – or if a hurricane is coming your way?

When the industry was on its heels in October of 2009, the year what’s known as MHProNews launched, there was a need then to get industry professionals to rally.  That required cheer leading, but it also required the facts that supported the reasons to be confident in our factory-built home – notably HUD Code manufactured home – industry.  But modular, prefab, conventional – all housing slid in those days

The automotive, RV, and conventional housing industry recovered more rapidly than manufactured homes did.  Why?  Document and fact laden Smoking Gun 3 will help answer that question.

MHProNews waited to see who among the industry’s trade voices would let the thousands who didn’t go to Las Vegas know that the MHI event was repeatedly disrupted by protestors. It’s on video. See that on the Masthead, because who else in the industry among industry trade talkers will bring you what is real?

We don’t want disunity,’ or ‘But we don’t want to hear negative things,’ some say.  Sure, we get that on the Daily Business News, but as an MD by training, I can tell you that patients don’t want to hear that they have a serious illness either.  Early treatment is the path to the cure.

The doctor, attorney, or account who tells you only what you want to hear can get sued for malpractice.  Don’t you want reliable information, not just happy talk?

As an MD and as a mother-to-be, I didn’t want to hear that our son Tamas wasn’t going to live.  But thank God, by prayer and daily action, he did live and while it required a complete change of plan for me personally, look at what a child who spent much of the first years of his life in a hospital looks like today.

Sacrifices were made in my career for the sake of our son.  Because we faced a tough reality in the face – through that combination of action and prayer – the payoff with our son was priceless. Almost everyone who meets him rapidly says, how special he is.  At the affordable housing focus group, our son went from table to table, telling joke after joke, to the delight of the attendees, while the video cameras, mics. and lights were being set up.

Every child is special.  Every adult is too.

On MHLivingNews, where the industry truly needs something positive, we do that better than anyone ever in the history of the industry.  But we also use that site to disprove time and again the false and misleading concepts that are held by millions.  It is done factually, based upon evidence, using as often as possible third party research, actual home owners, or other experts. No one else in the history of the industry has produced more such research, useful, and positive content.

The industry still needs a level of confidence building.  But it also needs reality checks and fact checks so that those who hide the facts – who hide the real news, and what’s going on behind the scenes – are shown to be who they are.

In the real world, people do bad things to each other, like it or not.  You have to be ready for that, as a mature adult.

In medicine, you change the prescription and the treatment according to the evidence and to suit the case of the patient.  We pivoted on our format here on MHProNews several times, to suit the evolving situation and to follow the evidence, while following the money.

There’s an affordable housing crisis, and manufactured housing might break the 100,000 shipment mark this year.  That, to borrow HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s phrase, is “ridiculous.”  See Greener and Stylish to better understand just how ridiculous some of what’s been going on in MHVille truly is.

America and the Manufactured Housing Industry’s Future – It’s in Their Hands?!

With room, board and fees included, the total is $42,419. That means, over four years, a typical NYU student will pay $84,212 more than the average for a private-university attendee.”

NYU is New York University.  How smart do you have to be to attend a collage like NYU?

The average GPA at NYU is 3.7. This makes NYU Strongly Competitive for GPAs. With a GPA of 3.7, NYU requires you to be above average in your high school class. You’ll need a mix of A’s and B’s, with a leaning toward A’s,” says Prep Scholar.

 

That’s useful background for understanding the video that follows.

According to their YouTube page, Campus Reform, a project of the Leadership Institute, is America’s leading site for college news.”

As a watchdog to the nation’s higher education system, Campus Reform exposes bias and abuse on the nation’s college campuses.”

Days before President Donald J Trump’s State of the Union Address (SOTU), “Campus Reform took to the campus of NYU to ask their opinions on President Trump’s State of the Union address… except the speech hadn’t happened yet.”  President Trump’s first SOTU will be Tuesday night, 1.30.2018.

 

Campus Reform also says that, “Our team of professional journalists works alongside student activists and student journalists to report on the conduct and misconduct of university administrators, faculty, and students. Campus Reform holds itself to rigorous journalism standards and strives to present each story with accuracy, objectivity, and public accountability.”

As a cross check, the Campus Reform video seemed reminiscent of a NYU edition of “Watters World.” In a pre-2016 election episode, Fox News’ Jesse Watters asked students from that same campus some basic questions about the then upcoming election.

Some did get it right, however…

 

 

Future Leaders

These are going to be some of the future leaders of America.

Regardless of a person’s political affiliation, or lack thereof, this ought to be a bracing reality check.

First, how is it possible that so many in institutions of higher learning could be so ignorant on the issues of the day?  What does it say about the state of American education?

Keep in mind that these young women and men are also among those who are discerning their next housing choices.

 

If they can be so misinformed/uninformed about politics that impact their lives and discussions, is it any surprise when research reveals they have only a dim understanding of manufactured homes?

Clearly, this isn’t to say that all young people are uniformed or misinformed.  This writer personally knows numbers of savvy young Americans.  But a nation is made up of a cross section that includes people like those shown in these videos – who often clearly need to be better informed.

Part of the Problem, or Part of the Solution?

Understanding a problem is the first step.

But the next step must be to engage those millennials and others who are so misinformed or uniformed about the kinds of matters that many of us would have considered basic during our college years.

Consider sharing links and/or encouraging your team mates to read and watch reports like these.

America and our industry are still near a tipping point.  One reason politicos can make absolutely outrageous statements on camera – and often seem to get away with it – is because tens of millions don’t know any better.

Impact of Fear – Manufactured Home Sales, Business, Investment, Zoning, Politics, Media, Manipulation, and You

Americans must recognize, says Harvard psychologist Susan David, that “A familiar story is not necessarily a truthful story.”

In “The Science of Fear-Mongering: How to Protect Your Mind from Demagogues,” Harvard psychologist Susan David explains “the dangers of fear-mongering, the questionable ethics of journalism in spreading hate politics, and the disturbing way that repetition wears down our brain’s resistance to fallacies and hate speech,” per Big Think’s YouTube post.

 

David notes that feelings of safety, right, comfort – their opposites – along with the role that repetition plays, are all part of the “the science of fear mongering.

What has arguably gone under-explored in the manufactured housing industry is the role that fear plays with:

  • Prospective buyers,
  • public officials (think, zoning – votes),
  • investors, business people (being in – or not in – ‘the group,’
  • media,
  • educators,
  • industry members themselves – what causes you or others to think and behave as you do,

plus all others.

David’s 8-minute video has a left-of-center slant that would be common among many in Harvard. With that caveat and bias in mind, she nevertheless makes important points for manufactured housing professionals to consider.

Customers are often driven by a variety of fears.

For instance in sales, there’s the notion of the ‘fear of loss’ – rising interest rates, pricing, a closeout model, or that perfect vacant home-site are but some examples – that have often been used as a real or imagined pressure point to ‘close the deal.’

But among customers, there are other fears.

What about fear caused by the economy? Or how fear of “X” – fill in the blank for x – affect my job?  Will there be a war with North Korea, Red China, or Russia? Will terrorists strike?

Then there are also fears caused by social pressures, or safety concerns.

Those kinds of powerful emotional drivers are reasons why videos and articles can be useful in helping a customer overcome a false fear.  Facts – properly understood – can overcome fear. An example from MHLivingNews.com is posted below.  But there are hundreds of others that address specific issues, often from the vantage point of the home owner or an expert.

Fear can cause people to do – or not do – something that their normal value system would cause them to be inclined to do.  Pollsters, for example, recognized that a percentage of “the Trump voters would not always say what they believed. Isn’t that a social acceptance fear at work?

Is fear manifest in other ways within the manufactured housing industry?  Isn’t the only answer, yes?

David asks, “How do we thrive in a world where every which way we turn our fear is being activated by politicians, by the media and by the desperate events that are happening around us?”

Spotting fear, and recognizing techniques of manipulation are perhaps as or more important today than in years gone by.

Why?  Because when people are ‘busy,’ they often default into patterns – instead of questioning, based upon evidence, those patterns and beliefs.

What is really fascinating when we look at the brain research around fear is that our brains proxy anything that feels unfamiliar, incoherent or inaccessible as being unsafe,” says David.

There is fascinating research that shows that when people have lower levels of self-esteem and they are in a job in which they are recognized and promoted, that promotion can feel incoherent to the person with low self-esteem. They have low self-esteem and they might be used to and expecting to be treated badly. So what is fascinating is the results showing that when people are promoted when they have a lower levels of self-esteem they are more likely to leave their jobs,” the psychologist explains.

Fear is an incredibly, incredibly powerful force in our lives and our brains are fairly immature in assessing anything that feels slightly incoherent for unfamiliar as unsafe. What this might mean is that if you are used to hearing a story time and time again from a parent or from a partner about how you are not good enough, you are more likely to be drawn to that relationship because it feels familiar,” she says.

David adds that, “Fear has always had a hold on us, but never with such fervor.”

Media savvy professionals recognize that fear must be overcome.
