Spotlighting Pro-Growth Educational Effort by Louisiana Manufactured Housing Association

December 18th, 2018 Comments off

The Louisiana Manufactured Housing Association (LMHA) video below takes a tact at defending and promoting the acceptance of manufactured homes that is noteworthy.

It could have utilized the singularly important point of HUD Code manufactured home enhanced preemption, or any number of other research points that were available at the time the video was produced. So while it is useful, it could be improved.

Lenny Kopowski and Steve Duke at LMHA have been doing such educational and outreach efforts for years.

The terminology matters because
the terminology determines the
construction standards a home was
built to,” Steve Duke, LMHA.

That said, it debatably stands far and away better than anything that the national Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) has produced to date.

Several states have made efforts at growing the industry at the state level. That’s laudable.

The unfortunate point is that MHI, which has millions a year in budget should be doing this sort of work, shouldn’t they? Don’t they claim to represent all aspects of factory-built housing?

Manufactured Housing Institute Housing Alert, Affordable Housing Crisis, MHI’s #NettlesomeThings Response

Louisiana’s slip in new home shipments is one of several topics that MHI has ignored in their recent ‘newsletter’ to their members. Several states have told MHProNews that they are concerned.

Louisiana is one of the top ten states for manufactured home shipments in recent years, per data collected by HUD and reported by MHARR. Clayton Homes has a serious presence in the state. Yet, sales are declining. Why???

Michigan’s shipments is another top ten state in recent years that has been losing, not gaining, in year-over-year new manufactured home shipments.

What will change this or other troubling industry dynamics?

One answer is the one that UMH President Sam Landy suggested, each company is responsible for its own marketing. Each company is logically responsible for its own sales engagement systems too.

After all, all sales are local ones.

Beyond that, independents who want to see growth should consider new alliances.

Because in the post-production sector, that MHI claims to be doing, the evidence suggests they are fast at defending themselves or a favored company, such as Clayton or 21st.

But beyond that, they’re  efforts for protecting, educating, and promoting on behalf of the broader industry have not produced anything akin to this generally promising notion by LMHA, posted above. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News , analysis, and commentary.)

Which Manufactured Home Producer is the #1 Leader in the Hot Florida Market?

March 12th, 2018 Comments off

It’s not the industry’s giant, Clayton Homes.

In fact, Clayton – which leads the nation by a wide margin in manufactured home retail and production – is nevertheless not number one in several individual states.

See related report, “Warren Wages War,” linked here.

The red-hot, sunny Florida housing marketplace is one of them.

According to reports from the Florida Manufactured Housing Association (FMHA), the top seller of both manufactured and modular homes in the state – based upon floor dues – is the independent producer, Jacobsen Homes.

The rest of the field is as shown.

But note that per the FMHA data reported by Jacobsen, more than one company outsells Clayton in Florida.

It’s a reminder to those in or considering entry into HUD code manufactured housing that the Berkshire Hathaway owned industry leader  isn’t all-powerful.

Not just in Florida, but in other markets too, Clayton are being outperformed in a variety of locations across in the U.S. More on this topic in the days ahead, stay tuned.

Palm Harbor Constructing tougher Modular Home to Withstand Hurricanes

September 1st, 2015 Comments off

palm-harbor-homes logoThe Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) has officially recognized Palm Harbor Homes for its production of the first ever disaster resistant modular home designed to significantly reduce property damage during a severe storm.

Produced in Palm Harbor’s facility in Plant City, Florida, realestaerama tells MHProNews this is the first factory in the country to earn the FORTIFIED Home™ – Hurricane certification from IBHS. The first three homes of what Palm Harbor will call its Discovery Florida line of homes have been shipped to south Florida.

Homes earning the FORTIFIED Home label must meet very stringent building standards based on IBHS’ years of engineering research and study, and are inspected in the factory and in the field by an independent FORTIFIED Evaluator.

We are very proud to be the first U.S. manufacturing plant to attain the FORTIFIED certification,” said Mark Kelly, Vice President Sales and Marketing at Palm Harbor Homes. “Our homes have a strong history of weathering extreme storms and now we will be the first to offer homeowners in hurricane-prone areas the option to purchase a stronger modular home that will be more disaster resistant.

Latest GIA Reports Show Consumer Preference for Factory-Built Homes

February 27th, 2015 Comments off

magnolia-home-henry-stahla-scottsbluff-nebraskaThe increased need for affordable housing in today’s market along with concern about the present economic climate is influencing consumers to be wary of spending heavily on site-built homes. These conditions lead to increased consumer preference for houses that can be built quickly with cost efficiency, and factory-built homes can meet that need. These homes are available at a price about 20 percent lower than traditional site-built homes.

A new report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA) reveals that shipments of factory-built housing in the United States are projected to reach 133,000 units by 2020, driven by the strong demand for eco-friendly and energy-efficient homes.

As stated by the GIA new market research report, prefabricated housing is re-emerging as a one-stop solution for affordable, eco-friendly housing in the United States, after years of sluggish growth. Single-section manufactured housing is expected to witness the highest growth at a projected CAGR of 5.4%.

PR Web tells MHProNews that each year, more homebuyers are beginning to realize that manufactured, modular, panelized, and precut homes are desirable and affordable housing solutions available in the United States. Manufactured housing represents the largest market segment accounting for the bulk of shipments. While manufactured homes are built according to HUD building code, modular, panelized, and precut homes are built per the state and local building regulations.

Other advantages offered by factory-built homes include better quality and durability because building processes are carried out in controlled environments, reduced raw material waste, and economies of scale in purchasing building materials and components. Given their huge order quantities, manufacturers of factory-built housing have greater bargaining power with material suppliers. The production cost benefits from factory-built homes are passed on to the homeowner, making these homes more affordable.

Manufactured housing communities are projected to increase from 28.6% of the market in 2013 to 30.7% in 2015.  Manufactured housing on private property is projected to decrease from 71.4% of the market in 2013 to 69.3% in 2015.

GIA names Clayton Homes, Cavco Industries, and Champion Home Builders as the top three in the industry, comprising approximately two-thirds of the business.  Other companies make up one-third of the chart.

Other companies mentioned in the report include American Ingenuity Inc., American Homestar Corporation, Palm Harbor Homes, Commodore Corp., Deltec Homes Inc., Endeavor Homes, Gastineau Log Homes, Innovative Building Systems Inc., All American Group LLC, Excel Homes Group LLC, Lindal Cedar Homes Inc., Muncy Homes Inc., New Panel Homes Inc., Pacific Modern Homes Inc., Pleasant Valley Homes Inc., Professional Building Systems Inc., Ritz-Craft Corporation Inc., Signature Building Systems Inc., Skyline Homes, Southland Log Homes, and Wisconsin Log Homes Inc., among others. ##
