Take One – Data Driven U.S. Outlook in 2019 and MHVille

November 23rd, 2018 Comments off

TakeOneDataDrivenUSOutlook201MHVilleDailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews

Propaganda works, but facts matter. In this take one on the 2019 outlook, we will focus on facts and evidence.

There are talking heads on cable news, in print or digital mainstream news media, who for some months have ‘talked down’ the U.S. economic forecast. Among their false claims is that the economic surge is a “sugar high” following the tax cuts, and that the high is about to play out.

The crash – a recession, they wrongly claim – is just ahead.

But what some call TrumpOnomics is actually American Economics 101. Prior presidents from each major political party, working with Congress, have enacted similar measures to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The prior performance was good, just as it is this time too.

In the first 2 graphics below, are the latest numbers from the U.S. Treasury Department. After the tax cuts, there was an initial drop in federal revenues, which are part of the historic norm.

FedsCollectRecordTaxesOct2018CNSManufacturedHOusingIndustryDailyBusinessNEwsMHpronews

Note that now, less than a year after the tax cut went into effect, we already have more federal tax revenue than at any time in the nation’s history.

USDeptTreasuryOct2018TaxRevenues

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, coupled with prudent deregulation, have already produced an economic boom. It is hiking taxes that creates a short term surge in dollars into federal coffers, followed by a dip in government revenues. Why? Because businesses that can, will move to a lower tax state or nation. Capital can be fluid, or to pardon the pun, Capital is Mobile.

The U.S. stock markets have been in flux for reasons that are too detailed for this report, but headlines are among the factors that have always had some measure of influence on investors. False headlines – misleading or ‘fake news’ – can and does move investors and thus the markets.

For example, headlines about Cavco Industries has contributed to a sharp drop in that company’s stock’s value. ICYMI, see that report linked below.

Hedge Fund’s Cavco Move, and More from Inside MHVille

The federal deficit is high, but has been since former President George W. Bush (R) helped create a new entitlement in his so-called “compassionate conservatism. ”  The 43rd president for whatever reasons also plunged the nation into Middle Eastern conflicts which are now the longest U.S, overseas foreign wars. Then President Barack H. Obama (D) kept those costly foreign wars going, and while reducing troop commitments in certain zones, the 44th president actually expanded military action into Libya and other nations too.  Poor strategic policy in the Obama years in Iraq helped spawn the rise of ISIS, and the war over the ‘caliphate’ in Syria was on.

Furthermore, Mr. Obama spilled trillions of dollars in red ink, the most of any U.S. President in American history. ObamaCare, various economic stimulus programs, and tax hikes – all led by Democrats – doubled the national debt in only 8 years. These are nonpartisan facts, and are among the reasons this publication is fundamentally not aligned with either major party.

It is entirely possible that if enough talking heads and negative news are accepted or ‘bought into’ by enough business and investment professionals, that the U.S. economy could slip in 2019. The forecast for the final quarter of 2018 may already reflect that potential. But the simple facts are that the initiatives of President Donald J. Trump, under the able advice or experts like former President Reagan official, Larry Kudlow and others, are working.

As the Daily Business News on MHProNews has noted previously, Democratic President John F. Kennedy and Republican President Ronald Reagan, a Republican who was previously a Democrat, each cut taxes during their administrations. In each case, revenue initially dipped, but then surged in their wake.

TaxReformKennedyJohnsonReagan1Reagan2economistManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

HeritageKennedyReaganTaxCutsWorkedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The reasons are American Economics 101. The best way to grow the economy is demonstrably to allow a maximum level of economic activity in the hands of individuals and business. There are exceptions to the rule, which includes the harmful economic impact of monopolies on business and the nation.

President Donald J. Trump ordered his cabinet to return to him planned cuts in their respective budgets. That is the other side or the ‘tax and spend’ equation. If a divided Congress cooperates enough, the prior harmful policies in the past 16 years can continue to have necessary adjustments that could continue the natural economic boom that the nation is experiencing.

The Takeaways for the U.S. and MHVille

It is absolutely possible that an ongoing flow of negative media, from either or both sides of the left-right media divide, could cause economic confidence among consumers and businesses to fall. That’s not unlike misinformation about manufactured housing being a harmful drag on our industry. In a similar way, repeated misinformation about the federal budget and the economy could in time harm consumer confidence, and thus economic activity.

It is also possible for a Democratic House to throw a monkey-wrench into the gears. Time will tell what happens.

So while there is no knowing with certainty how harm much negative media or politically harmful economic moves in the House may cause the U.S., the normal economic trends would be good from the Trump Administration Tax Cuts and Regulatory Rollbacks. But manipulation in the form of bad news, and bad policies – if widely believed – could spook investors, owners, and consumers.

Finally, the correct moves in local markets by individual manufactured home companies can still produce record growth, given the strong and growing needs for affordable housing. But as UMH President and CEO Sam Landy has said, those marketing efforts going will have to be done by individual businesses. That means, at the local market level(s). Why?

Because the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and Clayton Homes have both demonstrably failed in their efforts on their respective manufactured home industry image related ‘campaigns.’

Clayton Homes “New” Image Campaign, Surprising Facts Behind Have it Made Stigma Attacking Video

The race for 2020 in the U.S, is already underway. And sadly, the attempts to manipulate facts by various interest groups has been and will continue to be a strategy deployed against everyday Americans. That’s why a questioning mind, one ground in facts and that seeks the truth over emotionally manipulatable habits, are so crucial in the days ahead.

That’s also why our growing audience of pro-growth industry professionals craves news with analysis that helps cuts through the noise of agenda-driven special interests.

MarketWatch Reports Warren Buffett’s Midterm Campaign Contributions

October 19th, 2018 Comments off

WarrenBuffettKevinClaytonPhotosClaytonHomesBerkshireHathawayBuffettCampaigncontributionsReuterMHProNews

According to research published by MarketWatch, Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has given 100% of his campaign contributions to Democrats during the 2016 election cycle.  Berkshire has numerous manufactured housing brands, such as Clayton Homes.

Company executives often steer clear of any appearance of partisanship, in large part because they don’t want to alienate customers and investors who back the other side,” said MarketWatch.

WarrenBuffettMarketWatchGivingIn2018CampaignDemocrats

About 100 CEOs whose companies are components of the S&P 500 have been willing to fly a markedly Democratic or Republican flag in their political giving as individuals during the current election cycle,” said that source.

Because of so-called ‘dark money,’ interlocking directorates, and the like, it can be difficult to ‘follow the money’ when it all of the donations that flows from wealthy individuals, and finds their way into campaigns or activist causes.

DarkMoneyDefinedYourDicitionaryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Contrary to what MarketWatch said, Buffett’s political leanings has been rather open for years.  He was a strong supporter of Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton campaigns too. He denounced Donald J. Trump in several campaign events with Secretary Clinton, but toned it down after Mr. Trump became the president elect.

Jim Clayton, founder of Clayton Homes and Clayton Bank, is among those in MHVille who like Buffett, have deep ties or sway over the Manufactured Housing Institute MHI, who are supporting Democratic Senate and other candidates.

“He’s Lying,” Campaign Insider Video – “Don’t Do Politics?” Tell Jim Clayton, Phil Bredesen, and Marsha Blackburn, Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act Supporter

Andy Barr has been called a champion of the industry, and Marsha Blackburn supported MHI’s bills too.  So why were these loyalists apparently betrayed by MHI’s power players? By contrast, President Trump has specifically supported these candidates.  Note that it was POTUS Trump, not then President Obama who signed S 2155, that gave manufactured housing some regulatory relief.  And note too that it was former POTUS Obama, that put Dodd-Frank and the CFPB on the necks of manufactured housing, when realtors and the RV business escaped similar challenges.

Was Manufactured Housing Advocate Congressman Andy Barr Backstabbed?

Note that MHProNews editorially acknowledges the right of any citizen to use their money in any lawful or moral manner. But part of the concerns being spotlighted here is the industry professionals are being told that MHI is supporting lower regulations.  In fact, in various key races, there has been support for those who would vote for higher regulations, or roll backs of tax cuts, or other anti-growth agenda items championed by President Trump.

Rephrased, aren’t MHI’s big money players being duplicitous?  Didn’t Tim Williams say that the biggest threat to the industry was the progressive agenda that Jim Clayton, Warren Buffett, Nathan Smith and others are supporting?

ActionsSpeakLouderAcornObamaClintonBetoOrourkeTedCruzDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Before the recap, further below, and today’s industry-connected commentary, we will begin with a programming note.

There is a local post-production issue that is brewing. It is part of a national pattern. The topic is classic efforts to zone out current and future manufactured homes (MH). It is a big issue, one that both national MH associations has noted. But it falls in the self-stated area or interest for the mission of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). Rick Robinson, MHI General Counsel and Tom Hodges, JD, who sits on the Executive Committee for Clayton Homes have been contacted by MHProNews. We’ve documented the contact with MHI and Clayton’s attorney. The local officials involved, plus a number of other attorneys and other interested MH parties have also been contacted.

MHProNews will let you know who does what.

An initial report on that hot button, local issue that could impact communities, retailers, residents, and others is drafted and awaiting publication early tomorrow morning here on the Daily Business News on MHProNews.

The draft can be changed if/as parties respond. Actions speak louder than words. That’s tomorrow’s sneak peak.

Shift One

We will shift gears twice before getting to our headline news recap. Here’s the first shift. Our focus is Texas, and MHVille. But first this disclosure.

This writer has witnessed first-hand politics in three different nations. Iran, Hungary, and here in the U.S. In all countries, you can find candidates who can say or promise anything to get elected. As someone who loves her native land, as someone who went to medical school in the noble nation of Hungary, I can tell you that we were happy to support candidate-now-President, Donald J. Trump in 2016. Fair minded people agree that like his style or not, he has been working day-by-day at keeping his campaign promises.

That’s why millions love President Trump. That’s also why so many hate him. There is nothing more dangerous to the left wing of the U.S. than a businessman turned politician like POTUS Trump. Recall that 21st’s Tim Williams observed that the progressive movement is at the top of the threats to manufactured housing.

President Trump has also threatens several in the “establishment” or “RINO” wings of the Republican Party. He has made enemies. One might say, he’s made the right enemies.

Now look at the history of Senator Barack Obama, who was previously an attorney and community organizer for ACORN.

On October 18, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote: “We’ve written about them for years, but Acorn is now getting more attention as John McCain’s campaign makes an issue of the fraud reports and Acorn’s ties to Mr. Obama. It’s about time…”

FactCheck is a “Project of The Annenberg Public Policy Center.” It is funded by the Annenberg Foundation, and has received major donations from Facebook. Follow the politics, follow the money. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is pro-Democratic, and admits he and his many of his companies people are left-leaning. This is what Tim Williams notably said is a threat to MH.

Inside Philanthropy reported about FactCheck that “The organization’s biggest funder is the Annenberg Foundation, which has given over a million dollars to FactCheck.org in the past two years. We can’t resist pointing out the irony here: Walter Annenberg, the newspaper magnate behind this fortune, was not above using his publications to slant the news to advance an agenda.”

This is part of how “news” is shaped. This is why we’ve shared Sharyl Attkisson’s media chart, and the video documentary, Shadows of Liberty.

This is why it pays to “follow the money,” as Marty Lavin, JD, has said.

At the same time as the WSJ quote above, part of what Fact Check wrote is this, quoting from a McCain-Palin ad.

Announcer: Massive voter fraud. And the Obama campaign paid more than $800,000 to an ACORN front for get out the vote efforts.

Pressuring banks to issue risky loans. Nationwide voter fraud. Barack Obama. Bad judgment. Blind ambition. Too risky for America.” It is part of a longer message that included, Senator McCain saying, “I’m John McCain and I approve this message.”

Left-leaning backed FactCheck claimed there was no real evidence ACORN. Here’s a key part of how they said it.

On Oct. 16 The Associated Press quoted two “senior law enforcement” officials as saying that the FBI is investigating ACORN seeking “any evidence of a coordinated national scam.” The following day the Obama campaign’s lawyer, Robert Bauer, sent a seven-page letter to the attorney general claiming that federal law enforcement officials were being improperly used to help McCain by suppressing the vote through “unsupported, spurious allegations of vote fraud.” He asked that the investigation be transferred to the special prosecutor investigating the U.S. attorney firing scandal. The McCain campaign issued a statement in which spokesman Ben Porritt called Bauer’s letter “outrageous” and “absurd” and a “heavy handed tactic of attempting to criminalize political discourse.”

But so far ACORN itself has not been officially charged with any fraud. Aside from the heated charges and counter-charges, no evidence has yet surfaced to show that the ACORN employees who submitted fraudulent registration forms intended to pave the way for illegal voting…”

Fact Check’s full report is linked here.

But here are two kickers, all of which impacted manufactured housing, but part of which continues to impact manufactured housing, most notably the community sector.

Less than 18 months after FactCheck said ACORN was ok, the Week reported Scandal-plagued community group ACORN is formally disbanding. It will reportedly reorganise all of its local and state chapters as independent, non-affiliated organizations…”

And one of those radical spin-off groups from ACORN is connected to MHAction!

Wikipedia notes that in 2009, Project Veritas used an undercover sting operation to help expose the corruption at ACORN. Here’s how Project Veritas described it. “The Power of Citizen Journalism. This Investigation didn’t just expose the corruption at ACORN. It also stunned the corporate media organizations by bringing to light the power of citizen journalism.”

We’ve shown Project Veritas videos before, and can to this point recommend them. They do the work real journalists ought to be doing.

The New York Times reported on October 10, “Mr. Davis said Mr. Obama had worked as Acorn’s lawyer and conducted training events for its leaders. He also noted a payment the Obama campaign made in February to an Acorn affiliate…”

PolitiFact came to a similar conclusion about the McCain ad against ACORN, and then Senator Obama’s role in ACORN, as did FactCheck.

Who funds PolitiFact?

Per their own website, major donors include the Ford Foundation, which Kevin Clayton has spoken about. It also includes the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation, which Warren Buffett has made big donations to, and both Gates and Buffett supported Senator Obama and Secretary Clinton for president.

That’s a tiny example of how ‘the game’ of politics and businesses are played in the U.S. This is why following the money, and following the history, are important.

Don’t be revolted or turned off, vote against those behind the scenes donors who seek to manipulate voters.

Mr. Obama was and is charismatic. But his history is quite like how Dinesh D’Szousa’s video documentaries portrayed him. As president, what the Obama Administration did was harm the independent interests of manufactured housing communities, retailers, producers, independent lenders, and the majority of professionals. He doubled the federal debt in 8 years, after hypocritically condemning President Bush for his lavish spending.

It may not be politically correct to some, but these are all demonstrable facts. Your ability to advance depends upon acting upon reality.  No one else in MHVille gives you this kind of background, evidence, checking of fact-checkers – all of which impact businesses like yours.

Shifting gears again to Texas and MHVille

That’s a long lead-up to this short commentary. The number one state in manufactured housing for new HUD Code homes is Texas. Texans sell the most new manufactured homes. Texans build the most new HUD Code manufactured homes too.

MHARRDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

So what happens in the Texas Senate race could be huge, as a recent Daily Business News on MHProNews report further below outlined.

The contest is between Democratic Party candidate Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke, who faced off in their first televised debate.

We favored Donald J. Trump over Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2016. In this contest, MHProNews asks you to support Senator Cruz as better for our industry than Congressman O’Rourke (D-TX).

Senator Cruz has taken positions useful for manufactured housing, like the passage of tax cuts, and S. 2155, the “Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.” That’s the bill that rolled back some of Dodd-Frank, that former President Obama promoted and signed into law.

O’Rourke is slick. But his track record aligns with the Clintons and Mr. Obama. See the video. It’s a spirited debate. Watch how O’Rourke plays the game, because his appeal is emotional. He looks sharp, talks sharp.  This is a microcosm of other states too. Left-wing, big-donor money is pouring into O’Rourke’s campaign and allied super-PAC.

But O’Rourke’s policies would be bad for manufactured home owners, businesses, and investors. We suggest you see for yourself, and then get your colleagues to vote accordingly.  See the related reports, among the other stories for the week that was, all of which are found below.

Numerous other items, news tips – verbal and documented – have come into this pro-consumer, pro-industry trade media from third-party sources.

We review those through the lens suggested by industry veteran, Marty Lavin, JD – shown below.

Lavin is an MHI award winner, and a success story in communities, retail and finance.

Federal Hearings, Investigations and D.C. Politics in 2018

Hearings and research are expected that could impact manufactured housing on issues such as:

  • finance,
  • antitrust (anti-monopoly),
  • racism,
  • energy,
  • corruption,

and more.

Some of those may begin under the guise of a partisan, political issue.

Maxine Waters Statement, Preserving Access Manufactured Housing Act 2017, Warren Buffett, Clayton Homes

But partisanship on some issues as big as affordable housing can rapidly become bi-partisan, as an infrastructure bill may remind the nation in 2018.

From Senator Elizabeth Warren to the 45th president, monopolies are on the minds of Americans.

ElizabethWarrenSteveBannonBreitbartPOTUSMonopolyManufacturedHousingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews_001

Maxine Waters specifically raised the topic of monopoly with respect to Berkshire Hathaway’s manufactured home brands – Clayton Homes, and their lenders – Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, and 21st Mortgage.

So too have pro-manufactured housing advocates like Prosperity Now (formerly CFED), or industry pros such as George Allen.

If they all magically changed their tune tomorrow, one would still have to ask the questions that a good journalists should, like – Why?

Research on affordable housing – including manufactured housing – related issues have been, and are being done by the CFPB, per Congressional and other sources.

The CFPB has already publicly referenced in a report MHProNews as a source.

Website software – which doesn’t know specifically who is on the site – does ‘sniff’ a .gov, .edu, .mil, .org, and other extensions that become data which inform our operations and management that a healthy percentage of researchers are on the MHProNews and MHLivingNews websites daily.

There is an increasingly referenced “deep state” in Washington’s “swamp.” Senator Bernie Sanders, and the President of the United States (POTUS), Donald J. Trump, are not the only ones who’ve spoken about the “rigged system.”

President Raises the M-Word, “Monopoly,” Plus Manufactured Housing Industry Market Update$

There is a new sheriff in town who can’t drain the swamp and deep state overnight. But he has already taken on the establishments of both political parties several times.

On a variety of issues, the president has won. All signs are, POTUS is willing to pivot as needed, and that he is relentless.

With anti-monopoly (anti-trust) obviously on President Trump’s and Democrats minds,

  • and given the aspirations of the American Dream,
  • look for researchers across the partisan divide to be digging into affordable housing,

Tug of War for America’s Future, Center Stage in 2018

There is a tug of war over what America will look like in the years and decades ahead.

The principle of limited government – which was the bedrock that the U.S. Constitution was established upon – has arguably been eroded over the years. The general welfare clause of the Constitution was twisted to mean the opposite of what the founders expressly stated in the balance of the federal constitutional charter and the Bill of Rights.

  • Some believe in big government, because it brings them more money, and more power.
  • Others believe that limited government that provides maximum freedom and incentives for Americans will serve the majority, best.

MHARR: EPA Action on Formaldehyde Rule

May 24th, 2017 Comments off
MHARR-MMarkWeissPresidentManufacturedHusingAssocRegulatoryReformCongressWikipediaMHProNews-

The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) tells MHProNews that the organization has succeeded in winning a delay of the effective date(s) of the Formaldehyde Emissions Standards for Composite Wood Products final rule published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in December 2016.

The EPA announced the action yesterday in a notice, which fulfills the original request by MHARR for a delay.

As MHProNews covered earlier this week, the call came from MHARR President and CEO Mark Weiss, JD, during a May 1st meeting in Washington DC. That meeting was convened by the EPA to solicit comments from parties on a new rulemaking docket concerning regulations adopted under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and other laws that could be “repealed, replaced, or modified to make them less burdensome” in accordance with Executive Order (EO) 13777 issued by President Trump on February 24, 2017.

We’re calling for the elimination of certification requirements for finished goods included in the final rule, which apply to manufactured housing producers but expressly exempt site-builders using the same materials,” said Weiss.

MHARR was the only manufactured housing industry organization to participate in the meeting and address the formaldehyde rule specifically in relation to manufactured homes.

MHARR also noted that the final formaldehyde rule published by EPA (during the last days of the Obama Administration) was significantly different from the proposed rule, published on June 10, 2013. In essence, the original rule stated that both manufactured homes and site-built homes would have been deemed “finished goods,” and subject to the certification requirements applicable.

In contrast, under the final rule, only manufactured homes and manufactured homebuilders are subject to those certification requirements and related regulatory compliance costs.

MHARR tells MHProNews that, in accordance with EPA’s delay notice with formal publication in the Federal Register expected on May 24, 2017, compliance dates for formaldehyde emission standards, recordkeeping, and labeling provisions would be extended until March 22, 2018. Import certification provisions would be extended until March 22, 2019, and laminated product producer provisions would be extended until March 22, 2024.

MHARR will closely monitor this rulemaking, which is an integral part of the Trump Administration’s effort to reign-in or repeal federal regulations that eliminate jobs or inhibit job creation, or are otherwise outdated, unnecessary, ineffective, or unduly burdensome,” said MHARR President and CEO Mark Weiss, JD.

As this proceeding goes forward, MHARR will continue to aggressively oppose any discriminatory mandates on manufactured housing, HUD Code manufacturers and/or manufactured homebuyers.”

Zell: “I Try to be Right 60 or 70 Percent of the Time”

May 24th, 2017 Comments off

Never one to pull punches, Equity LifeStyle Properties Chairman Sam Zell, out promoting his new book “Am I Being Too Subtle,” shared some handy words of wisdom.

According to Business Insider, when it comes to getting to know people, Zell is all about movement.

Today I could probably get just about anybody to come to my office for a meeting, but that wouldn’t tell me much,” writes Zell in his new book.

Instead, I spend over a thousand hours a year on my plane traveling around the world to meet with people. I want to see what they are like on their home court; how they treat their people and the examples they set. “

Speaking at an Entrepreneur 360 event, Zell talked about how being a contrarian is the way to go.

So from my perspective, I’ve never allowed conventional wisdom or other people’s to intimidate me or change my views,” said Zell.

There are guys down at Wrigley Field that get paid $35 million a year to get a hit one out of three times. So, I only try to be right 60 or 70 percent of the time. The real challenge is when you’re wrong, you’ve calibrated the risk so you can survive to play the next day.”

Zell on the Economy

Last week, Zell spoke frankly about the economy, both before and after President Donald Trump was elected.

Obama’s $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was a ‘half-ass-d stimulus bill,’” said Zell on CNBC.

Zell also disagreed with comments from Warren Buffett, who claimed that the Republican bill to replace Obamacare would “cut the hell out of taxes” for the rich if the measure were to make it through the Senate without any changes.

The GOP approach to health care on taxes is not for the rich or the poor,” said Zell.

It balances out the system.”

Zell, who wasn’t a fan of the Obama Administration stimulus plan of 2009, he sees a different opportunity for the Trump Administration.

I think President Trump has a similar stimulus opportunity but without the debt because he can achieve that goal by deregulation,” said Zell.

Presidential Sunset to Sunrise: Obama Looks to Solidify Legacy, Trump Sets Action Agenda

As outgoing President Barack Obama prepares to give his farewell address from McCormick Place in Chicago this evening.

White House officials say it’s not a victory lap.

It’s a passing of the baton,” said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

Senior Obama advisor Valarie Jarrett says the speech is about action.

His intention is to motivate people to want to get involved and fight for their democracy,” said Jarrett.

The major focus on the speech isn’t going to be reflecting back on how far we’ve come over the last eight years, but really looking forward and how we take the accomplishments, many (of which) through the hard work and grit of the American people came to fruition, and build on that going forward.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Obama does plan to highlight accomplishments in his speech, including improved unemployment numbers and Obamacare reducing the rate of uninsured Americans.

The backdrop for his farewell address is a city that saw 762 homicides in 2016.

Numbers, Numbers

The homicide number is not the only one attached to the outgoing president.

CNS News reports over 95 million Americans were not in the workforce based on the most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That represents an increase of 47,000 additional people from November.

The 4.7 percent unemployment number that the Obama Administration references takes advantage of how the BLS calculates the unemployment rate. It does not count those who retire, give up looking for work or who no longer receive unemployment as “unemployed.

I have done an enormous amount to create greater economic opportunity for Americans,” said President Obama.

I took an economy that was about to go into a Great Depression, and we’ve now had a little over six years of straight economic job growth, an unemployment rate that’s down below 5 percent, and incomes that have gone up and poverty that has gone down.

Meanwhile, Sears, KMart and Macys have all announced the closures of dozens of stories that will lay of tens of thousands of workers.

The Trump Contrast

By contrast, President-elect Donald Trump appears to be less concerned about someone’s legacy, and more focused on fueling results.

Yesterday, Jack Ma, Chairman of Chinese E-commerce giant Alibaba, and Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury conglomerate LVMH, met with the president-elect at Trump Tower to discuss economic opportunities.

Ma discussed the creation of one million U.S. jobs over the next five years, and Arnault is considering expanding two of his companies U.S. factories. LVMN owns such luxury brands as Louis Vuitton.

We’re focused on small business,” Ma told reporters after his meeting. “We specifically talked about … supporting 1 million small businesses, especially in the Midwest of America. Small businesses on the platform selling products — agriculture products and America services — to China and Asia, because we’re pretty big in Asia.

Speaking on his meeting with Arnault, President-elect Trump was optimistic.

One of the great men, you know that, right? And they all love this country,” said Trump.

They’re going to do some wonderful things in this country, adding jobs, a lot of jobs.

While the president-elect has a fair amount of detractors due to his style, it’s difficult to debate that it is getting results:

  • Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son commits to invest $50 billion in the U.S;
  • Ford canceled plans for a plant in Mexico and committed $700 million to U.S. economic and jobs growth;
  • Fiat Chrysler announced plans to invest $1 billion into their Michigan and Ohio plants, adding 2000 jobs;
  • Carrier keeping 800-plus jobs in the U.S., among other business announcements since November 9th.

It’s important to note that all of this progress has taken place prior to President-elect Trump officially taking office, and small business optimism is now at a 12-year high according to FOX Business.

All signals from Trump Tower point to a pro-growth, pro-business environment with consequences for those companies who choose to build elsewhere and ship products back to the U.S. These signals appear to have arrived just in time – as the brick and mortar retail industry is suffering and majors such as Sears, Kmart and Macys are closing stores, which will eliminate thousands of jobs.

Terry Trexler, President of Nobility Homes commented recently on the current economic and regulatory environment during the company’s recent earnings report. “Our sales and earnings continue to be affected by the uncertainty of the U.S. and world economy,” said Trexler.

With employment levels, consumer confidence and, in particular, the lack of available retail and wholesale financing. Constrained consumer credit and the lack of lenders in the industry, partly as a result of an increase in government regulations, have limited many affordable manufactured housing buyers from purchasing homes.

The implication of Trexler’s statements is that improving consumer and business confidence would naturally boost manufactured housing sales.

How Ben Carson Could End Public Housing at HUD

January 7th, 2017 Comments off
HowBenCarsonCouldEndPublicHousingatHUDcreditAFLG-postedtothedailybusinessnewsmhpronewsmhlivingnews

Credit: Americans for Limited Government.

In an op-ed by Robert Romano, Senior Editor at Americans for Limited Government, addressed three ways that incoming HUD Secretary Ben Carson could end public housing at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

To set the stage for Romano’s column, recall that in selecting Carson for the role of HUD Secretary, President-elect Donald Trump said the following:

Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities. We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities. Ben shares my optimism about the future of our country and is part of ensuring that this is a Presidency representing all Americans. He is a tough competitor and never gives up.

Daily Business News readers should note too that public discussion among Democrat leaders is that eight of Trump’s picks for cabinet positions will be targeted during the confirmation process, but Carson is not on that list.

So, with the idea of urban renewal and overall economic revival, just what can Carson do to reform the current nation’s public housing? asked Romano in his op-ed in the Sun Prairie Star.

How about by eliminating it?

Romano cites that Carson could make privatizing mortgage giants, Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which were placed in conservatorship under the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) since 2008 after the financial crisis a top priority.

HowBenCarsonCouldEndPublicHousingatHUDcreditNetrightDaily-postedtothedailybusinessnewsmhpronewsmhlivingnews

Robert Romano. Credit: RightNetDaily.

Carson in his capacity will sit on the Federal Housing Finance Oversight Board, which advises the FHFA,” said Romano.

One notable pick to the Trump transition team was American Enterprise Institute scholar Edward Pinto to the Federal Housing Finance Agency landing team. Pinto is a former chief credit officer at Fannie Mae. If anybody knows a thing or two about not only the GSEs, where he worked, but the financial crisis and how to prevent another one, it is Pinto. It was Pinto who penned the forensic audit of the GSEs in 2010 that outlined the primary causes of the financial crisis, including the concentration of $1.8 trillion of high risk mortgages at the GSEs.

Romano next points to public housing.

Carson might also set his sights on the 1.1 million households living in public housing units, and privatizing that, too. Carson, who grew up in inner city Detroit, would be well familiar with the challenges faced the nation’s inner cities,” said Romano.

private_public_balancing_act__nationalmortgagenews

Credit: National Mortgage News.

For ideas on improving conditions, Carson need look no further than Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania in the late 1980s when the Soviet Union was falling apart, where public housing was rapidly privatized with great effect. The plan decentralized housing policy from national to local control, and critically, turned over ownership of state-run housing units directly to the people who lived in the units under extremely favorable terms.

A move in this direction, according to Romano, opens up additional opportunities.

As the units were privatized, turning title directly over to the tenants, it instantly created a private market for that housing. The owners could sell, but many of them chose to rent, and instantly had long-lasting incomes generated. It was a win-win. The same thing could be done in the federal and state government-owned housing units here in the U.S., creating a real stake by residents in urban renewal, and generating a new market for housing and refurbishing the existing stock. This will create economies where there were none, and opportunities to those who need it the most.

As a final point, Romano suggests that Carson look at some Obama era regulation.

FHFAMakesMajorMoveSignificantImpactExpectedonMHLoanscreditNeonTommy-postedtothedailybusinessnewsmhpronewsmhlivingnews

Credit: Neon Tommy.

Carson might also want to take a look at rescinding an Obama era regulation, ‘Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing’ (AFFH) currently conditions $3 billion of yearly community development block grants on 1,200 recipient cities and counties rezoning neighborhoods along income and racial guidelines. The rule directs municipalities “to examine relevant factors, such as zoning and other land-use practices that are likely contributors to fair housing concerns, and take appropriate actions in response” as a condition for receipt of the block grants,” said Romano.

This is massive overreach by the federal government, and basically puts bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. in charge of determining if neighborhoods are too racially divided or not. In the meantime, it ignores the reality that people choose where they live, by buying or renting, and based on where their employment opportunities.

In closing, Romano makes a very strong statement to the potential future for Carson.

If Carson did just those three things, he would be the most free market and successful Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in U.S. history, by getting the government out of the business of choosing winners and losers in housing finance, empowering individuals to have a greater stake in their communities and ending the federal government’s public housing failure once and for all.

George Allen Fact Check: 6 Errors/Contradictions in one section alone (290/1)?

April 1st, 2014 Comments off

Caesar-Palace-main-fountain-at-night-in-Las Vegas-NV-WikiCommons-posted-on-mhpronews-comThe Washington Post famously hands out “Pinocchios” for false or misleading statements made by public officials they fact check, including notables such as U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other foreign or domestic public figures.

Since the MHIndustry’s George F. Allen boldly proclaims himself weekly to be a “reporter” and “communications resource,” let’s see in just one of the three parts (not counting his standard introduction, or “end notes”) in his recent post how many errors or contradictions this alleged “reporter” makes.

1) The first error/contradiction is found in the very first sentence in George F. Allen’s blog post (#290, section I); which is a typo of one of his own publication’s name.

2) When George Allen wrote;

“…NEVER EVER ENGAGE IN PUBLIC BACKSTABBING of MHBusiness associates online or anywhere else!”

…does Allen realize he violated that principle in that very paragraph, in his own blasting of the Manufactured Housing Institute’s (MHI’s) popular Congress and Expo? Is it ‘Do as I say, not as I do?’ for Allen in Indy? Does Allen hold himself and his friends to this standard, or not?

3) The early bird special for Congress and Expo runs through Friday, April 4, so Allen has 2 fact errors in his second bullet point, and once more violates his own stated principle of “…NEVER EVER ENGAGE IN PUBLIC BACKSTABBING of MHBusiness associates online or anywhere else!” As a side note, when has MHI ever attacked Allen’s so-called Roundtable or other “meetings” publicly?

4) Allen’s paragraph five states registrations for MHI’s Congress and Expo in 2014 “…are up 30 percent over last year!” An MHProNews source at MHI puts that at up 39% increase over last year, as of 3PM ET, 3/31/2014. Doesn’t that fact-error contradict his bullet point 3, which boldly claims his location has become “the hub…” “…of 1) research, 2) resources, 3) communication, 4) networking, 5) deal-making, 6) PM training & certification, and when need be, 7) national advocacy…” What Allen himself has said in a prior blog post, that he agitatesagainst MHI seems accurate. If MHProNews grades errors and contradictions on the curve, that would be a sixth fact/contradiction error. But if you look at the fact that accurate research, business building resources, more (…and more accurate…) communications, some 5 times more networking at the Congress and Expo event alone, true testing and certification through MHEI’s ACM (Accredited Community Manager), those first 6 claims are all errors/contradicted, because he is clearly not “…the hub…” based solely on Allen’s own missive. As to Allen point 7), when has Allen last engaged in “national advocacy” on an issue with Congress, the CFPB, HUD or other Washington based regulatory agency? Should that self-proclaimed “reporter” get a total 6 or 13 fact errors/contradictions for that one section of his blog? Does the Scripture-quoting Allen recall Exodus 20:16?

With so many obvious errors in just section “I” of a single Allen post – a pattern of errors which allegedly occurs routinely with this self-described “reporter” and “community-investor” – is it any wonder that the New York Times has not called George Allen to have a reporter spend a week in his “land lease life style community?”

For those wishing to learn the facts about the MHI/NCC 2014 Congress & Expo to be held on April 29 – May 1, 2014 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas – or to save $200 on early bird special for the hottest ticket in the manufactured housing industry ‘business building, educational, networking and deal making’ with an estimated 1000 +/- attendees from companies of all sizes – please click here by Friday April 4 for the discounted rates.

MHI organizers say similar events in the home building or real estate industry often cost more, and tell us they have arranged for discounted room rates ‘while they last,’ but MHProNews – which will have a paying attendee of the event – encourages readers to check out the facts for yourself. ##

(Image credit of Caesar’s Palace main fountain at night in Las Vegas, NV: WikiCommons. Editor’s note: by way of disclosure, MHProNews’ parent company was hired by MHI to help promote this event, but we were not asked to comment or fact-check this George Allen article.)

Dodd- Frankenstein – SEC 2013 Annual Whistleblower Report

November 21st, 2013 Comments off

obama_&_biden_presidential-limo_july-2010-.pngIf ObamaCare has your attention, don’t miss out on what some publishers are now calling Dodd-Frankery or Dodd- Frankenstein (aka Dodd-Frank). The SEC is required to publish an annual whistleblowers report, the 2013 download of which is available here. The attorneys behind the website “Dodd-Frank-com” state “ Fiscal 2013 drew 3,238 complaints compared to 3,001 in 2012, an 8% increase.”  Did you check that, over 3000 complaints a year, or about 9 daily. For retailers, communities and others involved in manufactured home lending, lease-purchase, rent-to-own or other instruments deemed to be ‘financing’ per the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, this ought to be the latest wake up call. MHProNews suggests that once you’ve had your coffee, see if your Congressman is on this list, and either call to thank them or call to ask for their support of HR1779. ##
