Stills from movie entitled, “Mobile Homes,” but the homes shown are actually modern manufactured homes.  Some clips from the movie are found posted further below.

From writer & director Vladimir de Fontenay, the film will finally be released in US theaters this November. The story follows a young mother named Ali, played by Imogen Poots said First Showing, “The makeshift family scrapes by, one hustle at a time, until the discovery of a mobile home1 community offers a better life.”

Everybody deserves a second, third of fourth chance, even if in practice it often doesn’t work out that way for the very people that need it most,” stated Caution Spoilers

The flick is based upon a short film released in 2013, and was featured last year at the Cannes Film Festival.  The reviews have been mixed. While the Daily Business News on MHProNews isn’t endorsing a film we’ve not yet viewed – despite the title and terminology error – it might have a subtle theme that could make it useful.  At least, it could be better than some other movies that have had mobile or manufactured homes as a background theme in recent years.

“Sneaking into a mobile home to escape…Ali and Bone snuggle up together on the floor for the night; waking up next morning their uncomplicated delight at finding they’re on the road, as the home is transported to a park1 miles away, is a breath of fresh air for them and us,” said Sarah for Caution Spoilers.

The trailer park1 they end up at is run by the kind but flawed Robert (Callum Keith Rennie, avoiding the twinkly-eyed rough diamond cliche). It’s a chance for Ali and Bone to be their real selves as she’s put to work painting and decorating, and he can play with other children,” continued the review by Sarah.

Rephrased, it’s a story of a surprising fresh start.

What is a home? What is a family?” – Asked in Movie, “Mobile Homes

It’s part of the mythology of America that everyone can move on, starting afresh somewhere new, the slate wiped clean…” said Sarah. “It’s not saying much that’s new about women like Ali, or her situation. But at its heart Mobile Homes is an ode to a dream that is never entirely out of reach.”

Culture influences people. So it will be worth checking this out to see how it may, or may not, be useful to manufactured home marketers and sellers.

If, if the message “…Mobile Homes is an ode to a dream that is never entirely out of reach…” this might be a net plus for industry professionals.

It will be in theaters soon, so time will tell. Links to other videos with mobile or manufactured homes in the story-line are found further below, under related reports.   “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

  1. Footnote: The home shown is a manufactured home, not a mobile home. Also, the community is not a ‘trailer park,’ it is more properly a land lease community for manufactured homes.

To do a good job of marketing and selling, one must first have a sense of the broader, and local market elements. We’ll share some examples today that are essential for a marketing or sales professional in manufactured housing to understand in order to be effective with qualified prospects. We note that in all of our coaching sessions, good ethics and customer satisfaction must be understood as the given background, and the goal must be for the good of all.

Crain’s Detroit published a story that explained just how far manufactured housing nosedived in their state from the peak of 1998, until the recovery from the bottom hit in 2009 began in 2010. While it has positive elements, that report also raises questions for a savvy shopper or investor.

The Urban Institute did a report in January on manufactured homes, which was largely positive for the manufactured home industry, at least by mainstream news standards.

Several mainstream media (MSM) outlets have been spotlighting the need to protect manufactured home communities from destruction, because they are so important for affordable housing.  We’ll plan to spotlight one of those, sent to us as a news tip, hopefully this week here on the Daily Business News

The first takeaway is that there are some positive news stories carried by MSM and by third party researchers. These are examples of the kinds of stories industry professionals should prefer to see more of – and it is in part, up to pros like you – to make that happen in your market(s).

That said, the sad reality is that beyond press releases, most media coverage about our industry tend to be negative. Ignoring that reality costs the industry billions of dollars a year in new HUD Code manufactured home sales.  That means, mostly negative media coverage likely costs your location millions of dollars a year in additional manufactured home sales that your business would otherwise make.

The two screenshots of Google search results below are recent examples. See for yourself the ratio of bad news to good news stories.

ManufacturedHomeIndustryMembersDeclineTakeSidesRossvilleParkOwnerChatanoogaTimeFreePressManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews

There are times when none of the top 8 to 15 MSM news stories about MH are positive. Do you think that pattern impacts home buyers?  The third story from the top, above, is linked here.

2018-05-27_1331MobileHomeGoogleNewsMobileHomeSearchDailyBusinessNewsMondayMOrningSalesMeetingMHProNews

Let’s be clear. A large percentage of the time that we at MHProNews engage with the mainstream media, the reporter will use better terminology, and will try to work in some of what was said. Reporters are people, they usually want to be fair. Are there exceptions? Sure, but many will strive to get some balance into their report. For MHVille, more balanced reporting represents progress, every time it is done.

That in a nutshell explains a significant part of why manufactured home (MH) sales are still at historic lows, in spite of a raging affordable housing crisis.  But for the savvy MH marketer, that’s opportunity in disguise. Keep in mind that the MH Industry squandered a historic opportunity in the late 90s and early 2000s.  We’re being given another such moment in history.  Let’s make the most of it, shall we?

MobileHomeShipmentsManufacturedHomeShipmentChartMHIAShipmentsMHIndustryChampionSkylineHUDCodeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

A savvy, visionary MH marketer sees the problematic trend since 2000 as opportunity in disguise.  To tap that opportunity requires work, but the reward is significantly higher levels of new home sales that result in happy customers.

Story Telling, Defining Yourself, Media Engagement, and Code of Conduct

To tee this up, as a volume retailer for many years with happy homeowners, I never waited for someone else to define my business or my products. I didn’t wait for an association, a manufacturer or anyone else to do what our team could do best.

That’s not to say that associations, builders or other third parties can’t play a role. Indeed, they can and should.  But I didn’t hold my breath, waiting for that to happen.

Because if you or I’m waiting for someone else to define and boost business, what if they delay? What if they do a poor job?

We set sales records, and hit the top ½ of 1 percent of all retailers in the nation by making things happen.  We synergized with others, as much as possible, but we also did what we needed to do, come rain or shine.

So, akin to what Sam Landy, president and CEO of UMH Properties told MHProNews, we did our own marketing. It was wildly successful, and that occurred during tough times when dozens of new home retailers in our state vanished.

The are many beautiful aspects to manufactured housing.  One such point – if you make it appealing in your market(s) – is this. Affordability is always going to have a clientele. Nor does affordability have to be the lowest rung on the ladder client. Good times, or bad times, a motivated retailer, community, developer, or producer, can sell, sell, sell. They can do so honorably, with good CSI, and happy homeowners who send their friends.

After my first few years in the manufactured home business, I learned by trial end error how to successfully engage the media. Do that in your market, and forge that habit.

Example

Here’s an example of a radio show I was recently invited to do. This was for a regional talk radio station, so imagine this in your market.

AffordableMobileHOmesNotWelcomeinBozemanMT1450AMTomEgelhoffOpenForBusinessSmallBusinessExpertManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Notice that the topic sounded negative. Indeed, in one sense, it was, but it was dealing with a local reality. Don’t run from tough topics! Dive in! Push back with the facts, and the truth properly told! Make a difference!

This part of the radio show is about 20 minutes on air, with maybe half of that – near the middle – included me.  If you listen carefully, every caller had something good to say about manufactured homes. Even though the others on the air may have misused the terminology, I hit key points using the correct industry lingo, while also explaining briefly the industry’s evolution, and appeal to all economic groups.

Click the arrow to play back the audio.

TrailerHouseMobileHomeManufacturedHomeFactoryBuiltHousingEvolution101MHProNews-MHLivingNews

Make a habit of using the correct terminology. Encourage your team to learn it and use it too. It pays.

I’ve never stopped reading or learning about the industry, and how it fit into the broader housing market. We use that with our coaching clients, and with publishing.

Rephrased, we practice what we preach.

Why? In the long run, it works best. Short-term thinking produces short-term results.

Code of Conduct

The mainstream media story linked here makes an important point, and this is one that associations can, and ought to play a useful role in.

jay-hamiltong-executive-director-georgia-manufactured-housing-association-gmha-posted-mhpronews-com1-1

Jay Hamilton, Executive Director, Georgia Manufactured Housing Association (GMHA).

Jay Hamilton, of the Georgia Manufactured Housing Association (GMHA) would not make a specific comment to that media about a specified series of bad-news stories that involve one or more members. But he did speak to the reporter (a plus), and Hamilton explained to the reporter what the GMHA’s ethical principles are (another plus).

Hamilton spoke about the GMHA’s code of conduct for members. That’s something members stipulate to, when they join the association.

When a code of conduct is enforced in the way the GMHA executive director outlined, arguably that would make it clear to readers that the majority of the industry – or at least that membership organization – care about honest business practices.

That in turn is good for honorable association members.

But if an association fails to take action against a member that crosses a line who won’t repent, its arguably harmful to all.

The code of conduct should be rigorously enforced, regardless of who it is.

Mistakes happen. Corrections can and should be made. When they aren’t, let the members or board vote to expel an unrepentant offender for cause. If that became a habit, anywhere that took place would – over time – would likely see more sales growth among member companies.  Because consumers want ethical companies to do business with.

ThereAreOnly2WaysToLearnOwnOthersExperiencesLATonyKovachManufacturedHousingIndustryMHProNews-575x235

Do your best. Don’t wait for others. If you are part of an association, and bad news strikes about a member who won’t repent or do right by their customers, press for an enforcement of the code of conduct. Enough said for today. ## (Manufactured housing related marketing & sales news, analysis, and commentary.)

Proud to be an American

As we watched the release of Josh Holt and his Venezuelan wife, the ‘sound track’ of the Lee Greenwood song that includes the lyrics above was playing in our heads.

First, the events of last night, courtesy of the White House press room to the Daily Business News.

America is making a come-back.

The White House provided us the letter below, the day it was released to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

PresidentDonaldJTrumpLettertoKimJongUnNorthKoreanLeaderMay242018MHProNews

To see this letter full size, click here.

If you recall, 3 days ago, the president got tremendous push back from numerous talking heads for cancelling his summit with the North Korean leader via that letter.  But events since then have once more proven that POTUS Trump was correct.  It was walk-away power. It was the art of the deal.

Make no mistake.  On the international stage, this American revival is due in part because the 45th president is willing to flex U.S. muscle. That muscle is due to the military and their supportive services, including intelligence.

That muscle would not have much meaning, absent the history of sacrifice of those who gave their life for American freedom, and that of other nations. That’s what Memorial Day commemorates, the fallen who gave their life. Recall that Memorial Day is distinct from Veteran’s Day.

President Donald J. Trump’s leadership is why we saw the signing of the S 2155 bill last week that gave the manufactured housing industry relief.

Here’s that Lee Greenwood video, the lyrics are found on this page, and the video has a few screen shots of manufactured homes. Can you spot them?

Trivia – the tablet screen shot above is routinely how the MHProNews home page looked on that Sunday morning.

What does “News through the lens of factory-built housing.” © mean?

It’s a fair question asked by a reader.

You can get news anywhere.  You can get opinions anywhere.

MHProNews provides news, analysis and commentary on curated topics that are useful to the factory-built housing industry’s professionals. Dictionary says “curate” means – “select, organize, and present (online content, merchandise, information, etc.), typically using professional or expert knowledge.”

In conversations and messages with media, researchers, and others who are scoping out the industry, they may know X about their field, but they still need an expert in the manufactured housing world.

Subjects for reports on MHProNews are selected because they impact our industry in direct, or indirect ways – or a combination of both. So, those curated subjects presented in the Daily Business News, the Masthead, etc. ought to matter to manufactured housing professionals, owners and investors.  The same applies for the broader factory-built housing industry (modular, prefab, etc.)

That said:

  • But what if you don’t care about national or industry politics?
  • Or what if you don’t care about technology issues, and how that impacts MH?
  • Or what if you don’t care about marketing or sales?
  • Or what if you don’t care about legal issues?
  • Or what if you don’t care about stocks and the market reports?

First, you should.  But let’s pick just one of these – the evening market report – and ponder that for a moment to make the broader point. Let’s say for discussion sake that you don’t invest in stocks.  Should you look anyway?

Absolutely.

MHProNews has selected over a dozen manufactured home industry connected stocks across an array of products and services. Those stocks value and movements are reflected after the “closing bell.” That final graphic on the nightly market report shows you trends over the year.

Looking at that stock trend line alone has value!  It informs readers about the movements of the stocks of allies or competitors.  It also tells you broader industry tendencies, or at least how investors are viewing them as an option to consider against all others.  Also, the Daily Business News nightly market report has a feature that may indirectly relate to the market, but directly relates to other issues that are meaningful to manufactured housing.

Tops for a Reason

MHProNews is the most respected, and the most read trade publication in the industry. Some say, were are also the most “dreaded” publication in the industry, because no one wants to be caught doing- or avoiding-something they should be doing differently.

That’s fine, but none of that means we are perfect. If you see something you think is awry, please do say something.

We put out a lot of content, which we strive to be evidence-based, and factually correct. But for example, there will be some typos. Even the major media outlets have that, with all of their editors and proof writers.

In our relatively small manufactured home industry – compared to mainstream housing – being the best and striving for improvement are worthy goals.

Daily reader feedback plus third-party metrics are useful and necessary gauges on how we’re doing in serving your needs.

It’s the quality of our news, analysis, and commentary that has caused thousands to follow our twice weekly headline-news emails.  You and your colleagues can sign up for those free here or at the end of this column, below.

MSM and Industry Professionals

Some mainstream media (MSM) stories are just fine as far as insightful reports that accurately reflect some reality.  Others, not so much.

When a story is covered by mainstream media (MSM), we may select a noteworthy issue for analysis for our ever-growing audience of readers.

What you’ll find in our reports are insights that others missed, downplayed, or may have spun to fit an agenda.  Evidence-based analysis will help professionals when that occurs.

Controversial

Some have noted that we’ve become more controversial. Okay, that’s fair enough.

But it is never a case of controversy for its own sake.

The manufactured home (MH) industry must be honest with itself.

The industry faces internal and external challenges at a time that manufactured housing ought to be selling 5 to 10 times more new HUD Code home shipments.

BTW, we’re not knocking those who are cheerleaders or mouth-pieces for

  • so-called leaders who have been working for years, with
  • said ‘leaders’ being those who are spending millions of dollars annually,
  • and have failed to achieve their own claimed objectives. Sad.
  • They cheerleaders have an audience. Good for them. But the fact that their readership and engagement are far smaller than ours says a lot, doesn’t it?
  • We appear to provide more relevant, curated content in about a week than all competitors combined do in roughly a month.
  • Many subjects you will learn about only here. These last three bullets says it all.

In business, if you fail to perform, sooner or later, you’re out. Cheerleading is pleasant. But if you are a cancer patient, are you going to seek advice from the cheer-leader or from a specialist?

We “prefer to keep it positive,” as one industry blogger told us recently.  Understood.  But isn’t that like saying they’re ignoring all the troubling realities that keep the industry from growing?

Remember this quote. “If pretty pictures, great videos, or even 3D tech were all that the industry needed to thrive, then manufactured housing would be at a million new HUD Code home shipments a year, vs. hovering around a projected 100,000 new homes for 2018.”

America needs 8.3 million affordable housing units, as MHProNews has often reported.

The man who said that has also observed that “The MH industry will only achieve its goals by getting to and resolving its core issues.”  Current ‘leadership’ has arguably failed at that so badly, they won’t even publicly debate or discuss their effectiveness. That too says a lot, doesn’t it?

Cancer and Manufactured Housing

The affordable housing crisis is a cancer that costs the nation about $2 trillion dollars in lost productivity a year. Again, not knocking anyone else, but the industry learned that by reading MHProNews, not on some cheerleading blog or ezine somewhere else in HUDVille.

The only way to understand our industry’s potential – and then move responsibly toward those opportunities – is to have facts, evidence, and then look at them square in the eye.

A growing number of mainstream media and others have picked up on one of our mantras, that ‘manufactured housing is the solution for the affordable housing crisis that’s been hiding in plain sight.’

That crisis of America – and our industry – won’t be solved by doing what’s been done the same way for years.  We’re optimistic, but the optimist still grabs an umbrella when it rains.

Each article, each topic is selected to shed some light on facts, issues, or trends that can help lead manufactured housing back to its glory day levels, and beyond.

The manufactured home industry can climb to new records in a sustainable, ethical fashion.

That’s what News through the lens of factory-built housing.” © means.
