Mobile Home Explosion in a Manufactured Home Community Caught on Camera

March 20th, 2018 Comments off

MobileHomeExplosionInManufacturedHomeCommunityCaughtOnCameraDailyBusienssNewsMHProNews

An explosion at what appeared to be a pre-HUD Code mobile home located in a manufactured home community was caught on a police dash camera.

The explosion occurred at the Cypress Mobile Home Park, in Cypress CA, near Los Angeles.

Police not only caught the incident on camera, but first responders also save an occupant of that home.

It was very dark smoke coming out of every window at this point,” said Officer Melissa Grove from the Cypress Police Department, per KABC.  Three different versions of the video are posted below.

Neighbors said one man had already been burned, while another was alongside the home attempting to douse the flames. With the fire burning out of control – heroically – officers went in to get him out.

We pulled him. He was hanging on to something very tightly, and that broke, and we got him out right before it blasts,” Grove said.

It was really shocking, especially when you’re not expecting it,” said Officer Ed Pastor from the Cypress Police Department.

Orange County firefighters said it was oxygen tanks inside the dwelling that caused the explosion. Firefighters were able to douse the flames before they spread to any other neighboring homes.

The Take Aways

Industry professionals have numerous possible lessons to learn from this story.

  • The local media’s report appears to be accurate in saying that the residence involved was a true ‘mobile home,’ meaning a unit built before the HUD Code for manufactured housing went into effect.
  • The neighboring homes appear to have been manufactured homes, as dash cam video seems to indicate.
  • As MHLivingNews and MHProNews have often reported, true mobile homes or even older trailer houses are more susceptible to fire than manufactured homes, which are perhaps a bit safer against fire than conventional housing, according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) research.

Look Who’s Promoting the Good News About Manufactured Housing, While Defending Problematic Anti-MH Reports

There are several developing stories with focused upon the manufactured housing industry in process.

Several news tips have come in, including responses from sources such as the Urban Institute.  We are giving them an opportunity today to clarify, before we publish.

Which brings up these 2 questions.

Who is telling the good news stories about the manufactured housing industry?  Because there is plenty of good news to share. Or…

Who is defending the factory built home industry against problematic reports, be it from researchers, media or whatever other sources?

Current and long-time prior Manufactured Housing Institute members, Frank Rolfe and Marty Lavin raised important concerns on how a failure to address problematic reporting – or failing to tout good news – are key issues that holding up the manufactured housing industry’s sales and growth.

Who’s Telling the Good News?  Whose Defending the Industry?

We recently looked at the power of narratives, repeated over and over, and how they can influence and essentially brainwash those who don’t realize what is taking place.

Meanwhile, MHI – who has a many times greater budget and numbers of highly-paid professionals who are supposed to be doing P.E.P. for the industry, where are there similar effort, visible daily to the public?

The truth is there for anyone who have the eyes to see.

We’re awaiting an update from the Urban Institute (UI), but note that there is only one issue they’ve raised with our reportone.  And we believe they are demonstrably mistaken about that sole issue that they raised.  UI was given links to each of the articles we’ve done that mention them, but we’ll share just this one link for now.

Was the Urban Institute Misled, Duped, or Part of a Manufactured Housing Industry Scam?

ICYMI, check it out – because by not taking issue with the vast majority of what has been published, they’ve logically largely confirmed in their response today what the reports spotlight. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, linked context, analysis, and commentary.)

“No Other Options” – Frank Rolfe’s Pad, MH “Parks” Tug-of-War, Good, Bad or Meh for Manufactured Home Communities, MH Industry?

February 6th, 2018 Comments off

FrankRolfeHomeSainteGenevieveMONatGeoNationalGeographicMobileHomeParksManufacturedHomeCommunitiesDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews1063Frank Rolfe has become a well-known personality in the manufactured home industry.

He’s been called a genius. Others take issue. For example, sometimes, Rolfe says “mobile homes,” and they are indeed a pre-HUD Code home.  But other times, he says that, and he’s talking about a manufactured home.  On terminology alone, he’s controversial.

For some, Rolfe is an industry rock star. Others don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, why he is getting so much media, as well as manufactured housing industry, attention.

Particularly since that New York Times article hit, there’s been a wide range of industry reactions, as the article and quote below reflects.

Sensationalistic ‘Cold Hard Lessons of Mobile Home U’ New York Times article  by Gary Rivlin draws Manufactured Home Industry Ire, Desire and Fire

FrankRolfeMHIHypocrisyQuote-MHProNews

MHProNews and our sister site has covered those Rolfe-related controversies from a variety of perspectives.

Nat Geo says on their YouTube page about their series, “About Explorer: Explorer, the longest-running documentary series in cable television history, honored with nearly 60 Emmys and hundreds of other awards, continues as a series of major specials on the National Geographic Channel…”

Literally millions of Americans have read about or viewed our industry through the prism of Frank Rolfe words; he and his colleagues operations.

Against that backdrop is the first part of a two-part insights into the ongoing saga of Rolfe, and how he has influenced the public perception of manufactured homes and communities.

This NatGeo “Explorer video above is vintage Rolfe.

It could be used to inspire investors to take a deeper look into the industry.

It can also be used by resident activist groups, as has the video in the article, linked below.

All of it begs the question, what’s been the net impact of Rolfe on the manufactured home industry?  Particularly, the land-lease community sector?

FrankRolfe$2000MobileHomesNatGeoYouTubeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Still from NatGeo video, posted above, on this Daily Business News report.

Or, how has he influenced the industry’s discussion about itself?

Frank Rolfe: Pressured into Silence? Manufactured Housing Industry, and Journalism

Some are strong defenders of Rolfe, saying he turns around problematic properties, and improves them.  He’s doing residents and those communities a valuable service.

Others believe he’s a lightning-rod, one used by resident activist groups such as MH Action, among others.

Whichever perspective you, or your circle, holds about Rolfe – what’s clear is the Rolfe has been a media magnet. Part of the landscape of the manufactured home industry, particularly the community sector, is shaped by this prominent Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), National Communities Council (NCC) member.

FrankRolfeCoOwnerMHPFundsMobleHomeParksOwnerInvestorNatGeoYouTubeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews575x326

Some members love it, others, not so much, when Rolfe says something factually true like this.  For millions of Americans, there is “no other option” for them to own than by living in a “mobile home park” like one he and his colleagues operate. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, fact-checks, and commentary.)

Larry Hall’s Ultra-Rich Hideaway for Global Disaster, Survival Condo

July 11th, 2017 Comments off
AtlasMissleSiloSurvivalCondoDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Credit, Survival Condo, image shown under fair use guidelines.

The super-rich and ultra-paranoid are preparing for the breakup of civilisation by purchasing of apocalypse-safe bunkers worth millions of pounds,” says Yarra Elmasry, for U.K.’s Independent.

For Americans not used to seeing British spelling of certain words, their version of “civilization” is spelled correctly above.

It’s the survival not of civilization, but that of the elite with a few million to spare that this project target markets. While there are apparent uses of prefabricated elements being deployed underground, this strictly speaking isn’t an example of factory building.  But was so unique, the Daily Business News wanted to spotlight this for industry readers.

Larry Hall bought decommissioned nuclear silos in Kansas in 2008.  His vision?

To create a place where plagues, nukes, extreme weather or almost anything else one could imagine would be survivable for its residents for up to 5 years.

Hall has dubbed these underground flats, “Survival Condo.”

LarryHallSurvivalCondoIndependentDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

With $20 million invested, the 75 units sell for 1.5 million to over $4 million dollar each.

They company also offers a custom bunker, designed for the property owner who wants his Survival Condo on their personal local.

What we’re looking at is there’s an increasing array of threats like tornadoes and hurricanes and solar flares and pandemics and terrorism and food shortages,” Hall said in a 60 Minutes video interview.

There are so many things that happen every day all around the world and people are just hoping it doesn’t happen to them,” is the wind-up.  The close for his pitch? Hall ominously asked on 60 Minutes, “But what if it does?”

The company’s website asserts they “have the highest level of military grade security that offers both lethal and non-lethal measures in order [to] protect our residents.”

WatersportsIncludedSurvivalCondoManufacturedHomeProNewsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Got a few mil? Then yes, watersports are included for residents of a Survival Condo.

Elmasry says that “Were something to happen, swat-like trucks would pick owners up from up to 400 miles away, place them in their bunkers, and lock the doors. Hall’s first set of units sold out before construction ended in 2012. The second silo is 50 per cent complete, and construction will finish in the Autumn of next year 2018.”

SchematicAtlasMissleSiloConvertedIntoSurvivalCondosDailyBusinessNewsMHProNEws

Kansas-based Atlas Missile silo that was converted into survival condos. The lid is designed for 500 mile an hour winds. Those inside are – per the company – set for about 5 years of supplies.

What If…?

While it sounds interesting for those with megabucks, the curious may wonder – ‘what internet?’ – if a nuclear war hit.

Or if you don’t live within a few minutes of the silo, given maybe 10 to 20 minutes warning before a nuclear strike – if the powers that be told the citizenry at all – wouldn’t you be nuke toast before you got anywhere near that underground silo? ## (News, Analysis, Human Interest.)

Regulatory Murder, or Survival of Fittest? Darwin, Fredonia and Manufactured Housing Consolidation

June 13th, 2017 Comments off

RegulatoryMurderSurvivalFittestManfuacturedHousingINdustryResearchReportsDataCommenatryMHProNewsManufactured housing is a significant portion of the US housing market, making up about one-tenth of new single-family housing in recent years,” begins Fredonia’s media release.

However, the industry’s slow recovery from the economic recession and decreased access to credit for buyers has limited growth in demand for new units and created a competitive environment among producers; one that is destabilizing for many small manufacturers.”

Those words might have come from MHARR, or one of several commentaries by industry professionals reported on the Daily Business News.

Fredonia – a market research company that provides reports like the one they’ve done on manufactured housing for a cool $4,900 each – then states in their release, “Consequently, the industry has become increasingly concentrated as small producers close or are acquired by larger manufacturers.  In 2015, the three largest producers of manufactured homes controlled over 70 percent of the US market, a share that has grown in recent years.”

Some tell MHProNews that this is nothing more than the survival of the fittest. One industry veteran wrote in, saying, “Do you remember a guy name Darwin?”

FredoniastudyManfuacturedHousingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

MHProNews is not endorsing the study. Some might question, for example, their projection in the statement above that claims that multi-sectionals will be 60% of all sales. The current trend is an almost 50-50 percent mix of single and multi-sectionals.

But the broader question isn’t the reality that some make it in business, while others don’t.

Fredonia isn’t saying that businesses just fail.  They’re report’s top lines (executive summary) say that slow recovery and access to credit are choking off industry progress, causing some to sell – “consolidate.”

This was the same point raised in the Daily Business News regarding the commentary by and on Jenny Hodge.

The concerns of some are that failure to advance the agenda of the industry in Washington, D.C. is harming not just producers of manufactured homes, but communities, retailers and others in the business.  Larger companies can better adapt to regulatory demands, while smaller ones can’t.  That forced consolidations in the banking sector.  It is creating consolidations in manufactured housing too.

The Trump Administration’s efforts to lift the regulatory burdens of Dodd-Frank, and the invitation by HUD to comment on how their regulations could be made more business friendly are all the more important.
