Money, Minorities, Manufactured Homes – Foiling the American Dream of Affordable Housing

April 6th, 2019 Comments off

MoneyMinoritiesManufacturedHomesFoilingAmericanDreamAffordableHousingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

At the heart of what’s known as the American Dream is the ideal of home ownership and private property.  While millions may want affordable rentals, what study after study reflects is that the vast majority prefer to own rather than rent.

When millions are misinformed about a subject, it begs several questions. Among them – why is there misinformation? Cui bono? Who benefits from the misinformation?

Affordable housing is in crisis in every state in America. Go north of the border to Canada, a similar scenario exists there too.

Land is plentiful in North America. The question of transportation to and from places of work or business is an issue, as congestion in cities like New York leads some there to ponder a tax each time a vehicle enters as one so-called ‘solution’ to their challenge.  Isn’t it interesting how some quickly turn to a tax – a penalty or cost – that discriminates disproportionately against the least economically advantaged? But let’s move on to the central issues noted in the headline.

Home ownership is generally the better financial option over renting, so long as someone can afford the investment in making the purchase and plans to stay for several years. The renter pays for their housing, just as the person with a mortgage pays for a home. The question is does renter ever own what they are paying for or not?  Isn’t the renter paying the landlord to build equity, that if it were a mortgage to buy, would otherwise benefit the tenant?

HUDSecretaryBenCarson5000networthRenters$200000NetWorthHomeOwnersDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Wealth creation is aided by home ownership. HUD Secretary Ben Carson made that point repeatedly during his stops in the U.S. after he became the head of the sprawling federal agency.  Home owners, said Secretary Carson, have an average household net worth of some $200,000. By contrast, renting households only had a $5,000 average net worth, the famous brain surgeon said.

ManufacturedHomesGAO2014ReprotCompareApartmentsSingleFamilySiteBuiltHousingManufacturedHomesMHLivingNews

The GAO determined in 2014 that manufactured homes are the most affordable kind of housing, often less costly to own than to rent. The National Association of Realtors “Making the Case for Manufactured Homes” came to a similar conclusion in 2018. See FAU professor Ken Johnson’s comment on the wisdom of someone buying a manufactured home vs. renting or another type of home ownership. https://www.manufacturedhomelivingnews.com/researchers-shake-up-american-dream-rent-vs-buy-ken-johnson-florida-atlantic-university-exclusive-to-manufacturedhomelivingnews/

Then why has HUD, state, and local governments paid lip service to affordable housing for so many years? Because the most proven affordable permanent home in the U.S. (or Canada) is a manufactured home. Yet they are increasingly being marginalized or discriminated against. How does one explain that pattern?

Tye explained that public housing – an entitlement – often yields addiction. Ownership vs. renting or living in “projects” leads to integrity, a view he likens to those of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Information Wars

A Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) member who is not a dual member with the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) told the Daily Business News on MHProNews that he is “ready for info wars.”

It was a keen insight. It was a kind of polar opposite to Skyline’s Terry Decio’s lament to MHProNews a few years ago, “I’m tired of being the best kept secret. I’m ready to help house America.”

Those are statements from two different MHI-only member producers of manufactured homes. Both consciously or not are fingering the same issue. Information. Understanding. That de facto points to their opposites or possible causes, which are misinformation or misunderstanding.

TerryDecioSkylineChampionHomesPhotoQuoteImTiredofManufacturedHousingbeingBestKeptSecretReadyHelpHouseAmericaDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

In the Bible there is a story told of a man who finds a treasure in a field. He hides it again, goes and sells what he needs to in order to buy that field and own the treasure legally. That treasure hunter didn’t want the facts of his discovery to become known, or else he might lose his opportunity.  That story has many morals, insights, and takeaways. One is that knowledge was a potential advantage — but limiting that knowledge for a time was an advantage to that person who wanted the treasure.

Whoever better controls the understanding of manufactured housing can influence the value of manufactured homes and businesses in the factory-built housing industry. Misinformation benefits some, while harming others.  Hold that thought.

The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy?

ClintonImpeachedWashingtonPostDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

While there are agendas and bias in media, and it has long been so, it would be an exaggeration to say that all news is fake news. MHProNews believes in a wheat and chaff approach with all people, sources, and things. Keep the good wheat, ignore the rest of the chaff.

Hillary Clinton, while First Lady to then President Bill Clinton, spoke of “a vast right-wing conspiracy” against her husband and herself. It was utter nonsense, of course, a mere head fake to distract from the reality that caused Bill Clinton to be impeached and lose his license to practice law. But it was also an absurd claim on its face, given that at that time much of the media was in primarily progressive or left-leaning hands.

Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh was a rising star and a favorite target of the left in those days, just as CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post or New York Times are targets for several voices on the right today.

Each has a point, as right-or-wrong, they all have hidden or open agendas.

Far better to note or find the unvarnished truth than buy into someone’s spin. But as Shadows of Liberty reflected, or more recently Sharyl Attkisson has documented, various media have their own unique agenda(s). But that doesn’t require secret society meetings or a formal conspiracy to coordinate those voices.

MediaBiasChartSharylAttkissonLeftRightPostedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Full Measure’s Sharyl Attiksson’s media bias chart is useful in sorting out the agendas behind various headlines and news sources. http://www.mhpronews.com/blogs/daily-business-news/no-fire-just-smoke-and-democratic-clinton-supporter-says-enough/

The keen insight of Reagan Administration Secretary of the Interior, James Watt notes below is still apt. Google doesn’t have the exact quote, but his keen insight goes something like this.

I don’t believe that most of what some call conspiracy theories are actually conspiracies. What I do believe in are people
with common interests, acting in ways that benefit their common interests, and that common purpose may appear to be conspiratorial
.’  – James Watt, former Secretary of the Interior.

Let’s use a hypothetical example. If you hire a motivated kiss-ass, and you let the kiss-ass know that you want X instead of Y, watch that kiss-ass work hard to deliver X to the best of her or his ability.

So Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway fame doesn’t need a memo to go out to the Urban Institute or the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) in order for them to behave in a certain way. Kevin Clayton doesn’t have to send a memo to MHAction, asking them to protest group A, instead of group B. All that is needed is to hire or recruit people who behave in certain ways. Behavior becomes fairly predictable, once a person or group are understood.

Hypothetically, if Buffett wanted to use Berkshire’s deep pockets potential to buy all of manufactured housing up, he could. What stops him from doing that are antitrust laws, the legal barriers that keep someone or some organization from monopolizing a marketplace.

JamesGWattPhotoQuoteIdontBelieveinConspiracyTheoriesPeopleWithCommonInterestsActingInWaysAppearConspiratorialDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

So if you wanted to monopolize a market, and avoid federal or other legal scrutiny, how would you do it? Using the purported Buffett method, you buy a castle (a metaphor for a fine business in a sensible industry) with a good Moat, and then you deploy everything you can to widen and deepen that Moat slowly over time. You drive competitive players out, by what may appear to a causal observer to be market forces.

UnderstandingWarrenBuffettCastleMoatMetaphorsQuotesDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Never forget that even during medieval times, castles and their moats were in fact breached. It takes courage, intelligence, and sound planning, but the artificial moats that hinder manufactured housing could be breached by using a robust application of existing laws.

Part of how that could theoretically be accomplished is to weaponize media and public perception against that business’ interests. One might blur the distinction between a mobile home, a trailer house, and a HUD Code manufactured home. Make the term ‘trailer trash’ truly demeaning. Increase the regulatory barriers for that product/service. Force the little guy out of business entirely, causing an independent to sell out for less than their intrinsic value. If there’s no sale, watch their business go bankrupt.

Never mind, to the mercenary greed of those who might use this method, that tens of millions are harmed by such a process. Pay no heed to the social, taxpayer, or other cascading calamities this tragic ploy sparks.

In science, one might not always be able to directly prove X. But one might eliminate several possibilities as explanations for X. For the truly fortunate scientist, they can both demonstrate a smoking gun evidence for a hypothesis, and also use Occam’s razor to eliminate other possible explanations too.

Buffett’s Berkshire could afford to educate the public about manufactured homes quite readily in the course of perhaps a year or two. You wouldn’t use stupid advertorials to do that if you have access to billions, and could make hundreds of billions in gross revenue annually from a potential business.

You might instead:

use your extensive media contacts, to consistently correct every bit of misinformation that exists. Berkshire brand 21st Mortgage CEO Tim Williams suggested something similar. And/or,

use your own BH Media Group to correct the record day-by-day until people grasp the amazing reality of manufactured homes.

You might have MHI publish openly – rather than hide or fail to publish on their website (one of several examples, is linked here) the most effective third-party information or arguments for manufactured housing.

You might not allow Clayton Homes staffers to use the term ‘mobile home’ or even ‘trailer house’ in videos or social media posts that they do (examples on YouTube).

You might ask your billionaire buddy who owns Netflix or Amazon to put out a new hit TV series that has the hero and heroine living in a manufactured home, and have friends that do too, the polar opposite of having something like the Trailer Park Boys. Make manufactured home living cool and smart. Stress how environmentally sound manufactured homes are, how much more appealing they are, and of course how much money you save.

MostMenAppearnNeverConsideredWhatHouseIsNeedlesslyPoorAllTheirLivesHenryDavidThoreauManufacturedHomeLivingNews

For newcomers to the website not familiar with modern manufactured homes, learn more by clicking the image above or the link here.

You might have a new resident manufactured home owner group form that works with industry to successfully address issues, instead of working against the interests of industry.

You might allow the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs), that you once held stock in, to enter the manufactured home market in a robust fashion, instead of in a toe in the water way.

You might use your clout at HUD to get the 10/10 rule dropped on FHA Title I loans.

You might use your clout at HUD to get them to enforce manufactured housing’s enhanced preemption, so that local zoning officials don’t keep minorities or others from buying a manufactured home, and benefiting from it.

The list could go on, but do you see the point?  Isn’t the list above the common-sense or obvious things you’d do if you actually wanted to promote manufactured home living into a mainstream form of housing?

That begs the question. Why instead has the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis failed to do such obvious things?  We believe these to be people of above average intelligence and motivation. Then how does one explain their repeated failures for some 15 years to do the obvious?

Explaining ‘Leadership’ Failures

The industry’s so-called leaders have arguably failed on several levels to do whatever is obviously in the industry’s best interests if robust growth were the immediate goal.

Which leads one from direct evidence of purported restraint of trade and market manipulation and indirect evidence like the above to a vexing, but logical conclusion. The powers that be not only don’t mind minorities or others to be trapped in renting for years on end.  Rather, it benefits the billionaires and multiple billion dollar value operators in a twisted way to keep millions trapped in poverty, if the goal is to consolidate the affordable manufactured home industry slowly over time. It fits the Buffett quote below to the tee.

WarrenBuffettAZQuoteCriticalFactorDetermineValuePayFairBargainPriceMHProNews

It also fits the Buffett quote below about Moats too.

GoodBusinessIsLikeAStrongCastleWithaDeepMoatAroundItSharksIntheMoatIwantItUntouchableWarrenBuffettQuoteDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Sometimes the truth is hiding in plain sight. Follow the facts, evidence, and the money.

What are the contrary arguments to such evidence? That’s a fair question.  We’ve asked that too.

So we invited Kevin Clayton, Tom Hodges, Tim Williams, Rick Robinson, Lesli Gooch, and outgoing MHI president Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison to discuss or debate that contention in public and on video. They declined time and again for some two years now.

They most recently opportunity to attempt to explain to the industry’s professionals some alternative explanation was in Tunica on March 28th, 2019.

Instead, the powers that be since Tunica are suddenly putting out a flurry of MHI memos. They suddenly care about independent retailers enough to put on a so-called educational meeting that they charge them extra to attend. Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington Illusion of Motionas Mark Weiss, JD, President and CEO of MHARR dubbed it – has kicked into high gear.

It’s what another professional with deep MHI ties termed “razzle dazzle.”

DuckDodgeDismissDistractDetractDefameFromIssueTacticsByThoseWithNoGoodAnswersMHProNews-768x609

Hard Data vs Razzle Dazzle

But the latest new HUD Code manufactured home shipment and production numbers say it all. If they wanted to support independents, they could have done so for years.

Febuary2019NewHUDCodeManufacturedHousingShipmentData

Solutions? MHProNews don’t ask people to boycott Clayton or MHI for many reasons, including that it can be actionable or possibly even illegal. But we do ask people to ponder this, who are your true friends in the industry? Who is feeding you meaningful information vs. mindless blather? Who are your true enemies? Are you or your company feeding a hand that bites yours?

Keep what an MHI member said in the opening of the article linked via the text-image box below.

Manufactured Housing Institute Members Defending MHI, Great Debate About Manufactured Home Industry Progress, Problems, and Profits

The industry’s giants can’t have it both ways. Logically, no one can. If you treat people and professionals like cattle, they get tired of not being heard and of getting herded. When you treat individuals like they are your chattel, their natural tendency is to rebel.

There are good reasons why interest in creating a non-producers association is growing. More on that another time.

For now, we simply note what MHI award winner Marty Lavin said.

SoTheAssociationMHIIsNotThereFortheIndustryUnlesstheinterestsoftheBigBoysJointheIndustry'sMartyLavinMHIAwardWinnerQuoteMHProNews

MHProNews looks at the facts, considers the sources, and follows the evidence. MHI earlier last year, and for years before, MHI routinely replied promptly to all inquiries. But since we’ve spotlighted the problems and concerns, they’ve gone silent. Why? If the facts are on their side, why not make offer a cogent explanation?

Or what Frank Rolfe, a current MHI member, said.

We note too what former MHI VP Danny Ghorbani stated.

DannyGhorbaniFormerMHIVpQuoteFoundingMHARRPresidentQuoteDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

But the point in this article is simple. The value of manufactured homes is amazing. It is what Ron Thomas, Sr. called “a phenomenon.” But that phenomenon is misunderstood. During an affordable housing crisis, creating so much misinformation around the solution that is hiding in plain sight requires something bordering on a magic trick.

But when an echo chamber effect is established, then the steady drum beat of a false narrative can seemingly become believable. Look at the Trump Campaign-Russia collusion narrative. Tens of millions bought that lie. Millions still want to believe it, after it has been debunked by what the president called over a dozen “angry Democrats” – attorneys who indeed favored Democratic candidates, and also worked for Special Counsel Robert Muller.

Democrats, Republicans Agree – “Manufactured Homes Can Play a Vital Role in Easing” the Affordable Housing Shortage

Nor is that a bias against either party, as manufactured housing and affordable housing are bipartisan issues.

LATonyKovachGoodBipartisanshipShouldalwaysBepredicatedBenefitallhonestindustrymembersnotslectfewquote

The comment above was said with respect to another recent topic, but relates to this issue too.

It will take time and effort to deprogram the millions from each of those lies. It’s an info-war.

It will take information wars – using facts, reason, and truth over misinformation and fear tactics – to achieve the victory that could benefit tens of millions who are now renting. The rest are details and commentary, some of which are found via the linked reports below the bylines, business development offers, and notices.

NothingIsChangedUntilItisChallenged

If there is authentic concern for minorities or anyone who may be financially disadvantaged, manufactured homes are an option that must be better promoted and understood. Voices across the two major party divide have come to that conclusion. What’s next is the need for political and legal officials to act to break up such a monopolistic ploy.

Children, Grandchildren, Family, Manufactured Housing, Money, and You

Many if not most Manufactured Housing Professionals – MHPros – know the truth about our industry’s products and services. That said, millions of people don’t know.  You might say that they have been conditioned into thinking something that is untrue. Hold that thought, because in many ways it is a key to unlocking the future profit potential for your business and location(s).

For longtime readers, recall, that a manufactured housing professional – an informed MHI member – is the one who suggested that we research and report on Operation Mockingbird. Google it, we did, and then we did the report at the link below.  Family Jewels was a term used in a declassified CIA document about a once-secret operation, Operation Mockingbird.

.

“Family Jewels,” MHVille Insider Tips, “Info Wars” and Omaha, Knoxville, California, Seattle and Arlington, and DC Connections

A manufactured home professional also wrote to say, “I am ready for infowars.” Hold that thought too, because unlocking that is also a way to unlock the potential for your business, products, or services.

It is axiomatic that normal people love their children and grandchildren. As with all rules about humanity, there are exceptions. Exceptions – properly understood – often can be used to prove the rule.

The most basic social unit is that of the family. “Social engineers” have been trying to redefine the family for decades, and to some degree, one must admit, that has worked. Teams and businesses have used the phrase “we are family” for some time. The performers The Sisters Sledge in 1980 cut the hot tune – “We Are Family.” Dated now, it was red-hot then.

A hit song gets played over and over – repetition.

Repetition is either good or bad depending on the subject matter.

Repeat the good over and over, and it sinks in. Repeat the bad over and over, and sadly, that sinks in too.

If someone kept repeating something harmful to your child or grandchild, in time, they could come to believe it.  Depending on the subject, certain harmful beliefs could result in injury or death.

Poison often has an antidote, a medication used to counter the effects of the poison.

The antidote to poisoned information is the truth properly told, and told often enough. That’s infowars in a nutshell. That’s why fact checks and analysis are so important. We do those fact checks and follow the money here.

Call it what you will, but the severe divisions in America are a wake-up call. It is self-evident to thinking, informed business leaders that manufactured homes are misunderstood. It is also logically true that other falsehoods and misinformation are occurring.

Want to unlock greater potential profits? Understanding and then communicating to others the truth is an essential part of that process.

PEPProtectEducatePromoteUnlockingMindsKeyToAdvancementMHProNews

We created the graphic above years ago, because we understood in a broad sense what was necessary, and how to do it. What we didn’t fully grasp was how the biggest association and the biggest companies in our industry were arguably part of the problem, not part of the solution. But thanks to tips from various informed readers, now we have got it.

While he misused the term, mobile home, Frank’s point below was arguably spot on.

You aren’t getting that clarity of reasoning above from the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). That clear thinking isn’t coming from Clayton Homes or any other mega-firm in our industry. Why not?

You are getting it here on MHProNews. Which is why you and thousands of others have or will log on today.

Once weekly, we present the headlines for the reports published from the week that was. We curate – hand pick with intent and deliberation – each report we give you. In our industry, we are the runaway #1 as a result of readers like you, our sources, clients, and sponsors that collectively make this site possible.

If MHProNews is writing about it, I want to know about it,” said a company leader as part of a longer message to us.

As that tipster above wisely said it – for better or worse – we are in an era of infowars. Fake news has to be understood. Which is why we have, among the topics from the week that was, a Daily Business News report on fake news, and how to spot it. That features a short video by a mainstream media expert and award-winning journalist, who is now free from her mega-company.

Help us, help you, help your team. For the sake of your children and grandchildren. This is bigger than our industry, but logically – if you focus on getting the truth out about our industry – that’s an important start.

Here, thinkers like you are not alone. In our avoidably modest-sized industry today, north of 10,000 average logged on daily in recent months, per third-party metrics. For our boutique industry, that 10,000 average daily readers is incredible market penetration.

But it is also reflective of the fact that researchers about manufactured housing – who are often investors – are here day by day too.

The two most common words we get from readers, are “thank you,” and we in turn thank you – our readers, sources, clients and sponsors. Together, we advance.

The markets have been sliding in recent days. But why? The fundamentals of the economy and most companies on the exchanges are good.

If you are over 35, and think back, you’ve seen this rodeo market-madness before. A few people already have – or soon will – benefit from this so-called “market correction.”  Those blanks can be filled in later.

A man guns down worshipers in a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. Why? That isn’t relative, it isn’t a matter of opinion. It tragically happened last weekend. One can flashback to a madman walking into a church in South Carolina, or another who did something sadly similar in Texas. The common point for all three is that the shooters justified their own misguided behavior.

A woman, man, or child is diagnosed with an illness. It’s real, that illness isn’t an matter of opinion. Be it temporary or incurable, changes occur in someone’s life, perhaps the lives of several people.

Medicine exists because of science. Medicine and science are predicated on the understanding that reality can be known. Houses stand – or fall – due to science. Manufactured homes are built based upon principles of engineering. One can recognize the behavior of a ‘madman,’ because there is at some level a deeper knowledge of ‘what is right and what is wrong.’

When people lament the lack of civil discourse in politics, part of the challenge is that two world-views are clashing. Are there absolute truths? Or is all truth ‘relative?’

The notion of relativism is a sad fallacy, and the examples above disprove the fundamental underpinnings of relativism. The markets have fallen. People lost money. People died in those places of worship. It would be delusional to think otherwise. Truth is what is real.

The video on relativism below isn’t perfect, but it is useful. It uses stark examples to shake people into realizing that there is a moral right and wrong. That moral truth comes from a Creator of all things. Millions have watched it, and it’s well rated.

The universe exists. Why? What existed before the universe? There is a simple principle found in science, mathematics or philosophy. Here it is. “From nothing, nothing comes.”

There is cause and effect. Nothing comes from nothing. You don’t ask a fireplace for heat, until you first put in wood, kindling, and light the flammable material to start fire. You don’t write a check for more money than is in your bank account, or your overdraft limit. From nothing, nothing comes.

The universe exists because an all-powerful Cause brought it into existence. That First Cause established a moral universe. People are free to choose between right and wrong.  But there are clear consequences to choosing what is wrong. America’s founders weren’t perfect, but they understood this principle very well. They understood too that a just society had to be founded on a lived faith that inspires morality.

Reality is what is. Right and wrong are real. Right and wrong are not ‘relative.’ Personal taste is relative – for example, you like this food but not that one. But there are absolute right and wrong. Ideally, the concepts of right and wrong are what laws are based upon. Then good laws should be justly enforced.

We may learn in time that the so-called market correction we’ve seen in recent days is perhaps an ‘October surprise.’ The strongest argument for the 45th president and his party is a strong economy. Shaking that belief in a sound economy, some voters still on the fence could decide to vote Democratic instead of Republican. Keep in mind that this writer is a political independent, but a pragmatic one.

If it sounds sinister to think that markets can be manipulated, haven’t those over the age of 35 lived through some things that are similar before?  For example, the causes of the crash of 2008 were not mysterious.  They were known to several, but not all, in advance. Those who knew and kept on going weren’t stopped by those who warned against it.  How where the guilty punished?  Yet, trillions in assets were lost by millions, and they were later regained by others. That is a matter of history only a decade ago, and we better learn from it.

The video above was published on Sept 24, 2008.  Note our prior Daily Business News report linked below the timeframe when Warren Buffett sold his interests in the GSEs?

You don’t normally blame the victim of a crime. You look for the criminal instead. One doesn’t blame the ill patient. Rather, you look for the cause of the illness, and with the patient’s cooperation, determine the cause and best treatment options. America is infected by several false notions.  Only steady doses of the truth – of reality – will set more people free.

Moral relativism isn’t the only problem that faces America, along with much of the world. But moral relativism is a real problem. The solution?  It is better to light one candle – by sharing an article and video like this he – than it is to curse the darkness.  It is better to enlighten some, than to do nothing.

We’ve reported for some time how manufactured housing is a victim, to a certain degree, of manipulation of people’s perceptions of reality. Realty and truth matter.

Manufactured housing is also a victim of a manipulation of forces beyond the means of most everyone in this industry to impact. That is why ‘causes and effects’ must be understood in the light of fact-checks. Then, based upon reason, prudent planning and action can occur.

Still from the short but insightful video report, posted above. That video was from Sept of 2008.

About one week from today, the masters of most U.S. media, the major players in tech, the internet, and the richest people in America will find out – along with the rest of us – the result of most races in the House and Senate. Fear is being used to motivate the voters of both major parties. But common sense is being called for consistently by one political leader, and that would be the outsider that successfully challenged the political math of Washington, D.C. in 2016. That same leader has been tirelessly working to reset and improve the economic course of the nation, from years of a ‘rigged system’ madness.

JohnMcCainGSEs2008MeltdownMay252006ManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Still from the short but insightful video from Fox News, posted above. That Special Report video was from Sept of 2008.

One man is leading the charge to bring back to the USA once lost jobs, lost businesses, and once lost industries.  He’s succeeded at doing what his predecessor said could not be done. Given years of dirt thrown his way, the accomplishments are astonishing.

Millions of ballots have already been cast for the 2018 midterms. In several states, early voting as measured by party registrations has favored the GOP.  That’s a fact that sadly is being under-reported.  But we hunt for facts like that, and share them so that the illusions some paint don’t become reality.

The outcome of the election isn’t certain. Both major parties are giving it their all. For example, Netflix gave former President Barack Obama a huge contract. The former president is now out campaigning for Democrats, including Andrew Gillum, who openly says he is a socialist. Socialism doesn’t work, but one party is asking Americans to believe what is proven not to be true. This too is about absolute truths, and the struggle over relativism.  Note that Netflix, part of FAANG – is one of those monopolistic brands that could be facing antitrust action in 2019.

Is it a coincidence that Netflix hired former President Obama, who is now campaigning against President Donald J. Trump’s agenda?  Follow the agendas, follow the money, follow your common sense.

Because lies told well can cause people to want to believe what isn’t true.  Before ObamaCare ever went into effect, Thomas Sowell used common sense to explain why it wouldn’t work.  Truth is black and white, but when it comes to who speaks the truth or deception– that can come from people of any background.

There is a need for America to return to objective reality. There is a need to reject moral relativism, and to reject the manipulative methods of a few who strain for socialism or crony capitalism over free markets. There is a need to reject the methods of those who dominate tech, and most media. One must reject the manipulations of the uber rich’s power over markets, because logically only a few are capable of manipulating the markets in the ways that are being witnessed in the past week.

That’s the principle of Occam’s Razor.

OccamsRazorDefinedManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

That the clarity of reason. Occam’s Razor explains that the most likely explanation is usually the correct one.

OccamsRazorSimplestExplanationIsTheCorrectOneDailyBusinessNewsMHPronews

But to buy into reason, one must believe in absolute truth. That means one must buy into objective reality, and objective morality – that it is wrong to manipulate markets, money, and minds – and for that, one must believe in our God-given common sense.

With objective reality, the truth of manufactured homes potential to ease the affordable housing crisis may break through. Absent objective reason and morality, that truth can be obscured.

Opinions are common.  As the saying goes, opinions are a dime a dozen.

But facts, evidence, and money trails are nettlesome things.

Sam Zell

Sam Zell is the Chairman of Manufactured Home (MH) Community giant, Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS). In the MH and RV site spaces – and related home sales and rental business – they are at the top with Sun Communities, per figures used by the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI).

According to Open Secrets, which uses federal information sources, Sam Zell has given during the 2018 election cycle 100 percent of his campaign contributions to Republican (GOP, Grand Old Party) candidates.

ICYMI, or need a refresher, a prior Daily Business News on MHProNews report about Zell is linked below.

Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett is the Chairman of the Berkshire Hathaway (BH) conglomerate. Buffett’s Berkshire owns numerous manufactured housing connected brands. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Clayton Homes,
  • 21st Mortgage Corp,
  • Vanderbilt Mortgage – which began making loans in the MHCommunities (MHC) commercial lending space – beyond making loans on manufactured homes for Clayton Homes,
  • Berkadia,
  • NAI,
  • Shaw Carpets,
  • Berkshire Hathaway Home Services,
  • plus numerous other suppliers and financial services firms, not overlooking BH’s serious stake in controversy-laden Wells Fargo.

As MarketWatch and MHProNews reported last week, Buffett gave 100 percent of his campaign contributions to Democrats in the 2018 midterm election cycle.

MarketWatch Reports Warren Buffett’s Midterm Campaign Contributions

It must be noted that via so-called “dark money” channels, Buffet has given to foundations and non-profit groups. Through those foundations, Berkshire money is supporting anti-MHC activist group, Manufactured Housing Action (MHAction).

Expose! Why Has Warren Buffett/BH Funded Anti-MHC Activists, MHAction? Why Fund Attacks on ELS, Frank Rolfe, Blackstone Group?

As we recently reported on MHLivingNews, MHAction has targeted with protests that drew mainstream media attention:

  • HUD Secretary Ben Carson,
  • ELS,
  • Frank Rolfe and Dave Reynolds led RVHorizons, MHPFunds, and Mobile Home University (MHC),
  • Blackstone Group, which MHProNews reported entered the MHC space last summer.

Even Golden State Manufactured-Home Owners League (GSMOL), another manufactured home owner resident group, has cautioned against MHAction.

Tim Williams

Tim Williams is the President and CEO Buffett’s Berkshire owned 21st Mortgage Corp. Williams has been the subject of numerous reports, exclusive statements and interviews by MHProNews for several years.

TimWilliams21stMortgagePublicationDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsMHLivingNews

Williams, along with ELS’ late Vice-Chairman Howard Walker, Williams has praised MHProNews and MHLivingNews, see the comments above and below.

The words of the late Howard Walker, ELS Vice Chairman, shared for publication with MHProNews.

According to Open Secrets, Williams has split his personal campaign donations. Most, per that source, has gone to Republicans. But it is worth noting that Williams has given to high profile U.S. Senate candidates who are Democrats. Those Democrats include, but may not be limited to, Joe Donnelly (IN-D) and Sherrod Brown (OH-D).

2018-10-29_0935TimothyWWilliamsKnoxvilleTN21stMortgageDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Donnelly is considered the more moderate among Democrats, but Brown is pretty far leftist. What makes the Williams contributions controversial is the fact that Williams publicly blasted “progressives” in an MHI meeting, while he was still MHI Chairman.

VicePresidentMikePenceWifeKarenHandOverHeartPledgeColts49ersGameWashingtonTimesDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Williams supported a progressive, Sherrod Brown, and a Democrat that sides with progressive Senate Minority Chuck Schumer and House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi on almost every issue. One can agree with William’s presentation, while noting the obvious disconnect between his words and deeds. MHProNews was the only MH trade media that spotlighted this concern previously, at the article linked below. Now, more i’s are dotted. http://www.MHProNews.com/industry-news/industry-in-focus/is-tim-williams-21st-mortgage-ceo-mhi-chair-at-odds-with-berkshire-hathaway-chairman-warren-buffett

The Terrain on D-8

Both Senators Donnelly and Brown are in states that President Donald J. Trump (R) has campaigned in. It must be noted that it was President Trump who signed S. 2155, which gave the manufactured housing industry a measure of relief from the onerous MLO Rule imposed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB, or more recently being dubbed the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (BCFP)).

It was after an MHProNews satirical image, that was followed by a spotlight from sources at the CFPB that said that MHI had not yet contacted acting director Mick Mulvaney about regulatory relief, that The Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) reportedly began their push for repealing the MLO rule via S 2155.

Because of the presence in Indiana of a Libertarian candidate who is drawing single digit polling that might otherwise go to the GOP, that Senate race is tight. But there is polling data that suggests that the Republicans are marginally ahead in both states.  The varied House races are a tougher call, but early voting data seems to suggest Republican momentum, in spite of what Nate Silver and other pro-Democratic pundits are saying.

Indiana, of course, is the state where Vice President Mike Pence (R) was governor. MHProNews sources have said that Pence understands MH industry issues, knows our industry’s lingo, and has been supportive of manufactured housing.

MHProNews was alone in industry trade media to point out the apparent conflict between Tim Williams/21st and his boss Buffett, or was it a head fake? Either way, it’s problematic for thinking manufactured housing industry professionals, most notably independents.

One could argue that Zell and ELS are trying to protect their interests against Berkshire Hathaway dominated MHI, by being in MHI. Speculation and statements on that topic vary.

But what the facts and money trail point to is that MHI leaders like Buffett, Clayton, Tim Williams, and Nathan Smith have supported Democratic candidates that have been working against the interests of the majority of manufactured home industry independents for all of the Obama era years.

Sources tell MHProNews that Berkshire Brands in Manufactured Housing have worked for at least a decade to keep the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac out of chattel lending.  The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) President and CEO, Mark Weiss has argued the GSEs are mandated to do chattel lending as part of their Duty to Serve (DTS) Manufactured Housing.

Next Steps?

The Hill and other sources say that voters are following this midterm more closely than others. MHProNews data on ‘hits’ on various articles related to issues like those noted indicates something similar within the manufactured home industry’s circles.

It should be noted that MHProNews respects the right of Buffett, Williams, Clayton or others to give their money and vote as they wish. That said, it is questionable for them to argue that they are working for regulatory relief, when they have supported candidates that have and are doing the opposite of regulatory relief to manufactured housing.

Greener, Stylish Manufactured Homes – Hidden Facts in the Washington Post Manufactured Housing Narrative

With November 6 only a week away on Tuesday, and early voting started, this is arguably the time for thinking professionals to see what has happened to them, at the hands of MHI’s leadership.

That in turn leads to the point that it is the 45th President, Donald J. Trump’s Administration that has shown in numerous ways that they are fighting to break down the barriers for manufactured housing that billionaires like Buffett, his minions, and his allies have built up.

Beyond voting wisely, please consider sharing posts like this with your fellow professionals. Also, consider sharing with home owners and consumers MHLivingNews, and specifically the related reports, linked herein and further below.

There are growing indications, even from mainstream media sources, that the so-called blue wave has not materialized.  Early voting has favored Republican turnout, per NBC News, the Hill and other mainstream media sources that span the left-right media divide.

But every election comes down to counting each vote, and that means motivated voters must show up and cast their ballots wisely.

With the Trump agenda clearly supporting the interests of small-to-midsized manufactured home businesses and homeowners, isn’t it just logical to provide the Trump Administration with the Republicans in Congress that he needs to keep the momentum going?

Mr. Zell’s money would seem to indicate that, while Mr. Buffett’s dough continues to support building “the regulatory moat” that has grown Berkshire’s grasp over manufactured housing for some 15 years.

Connecting the Dots in MHVille

  • Accurate information,
  • a clear understanding of how manufactured home professionals and homeowners alike have purportedly been played by deep Democratic billionaires have held sway over the MHVille, big tech, and other industries,
  • how it could be broken up, following successful GOP midterms, via antitrust action by the Trump Administration.

What a message that arrived at MHProNews HQ.

It said this.

Tony [MHProNews’ publisher], I’m wondering if you missed it.  You’ve [MHProNews] done articles lately on billionaires, Democrats, and of course on MHI [Manufactured Housing Institute]. I’m conservative [said the message], but my colleagues and I give to Democrats.  We are members of MHI too. Think of Democrats and MHI as protection rackets. That’s the bottom line.”

Wow.  And ouch.

Sources in California have pointed to something similar.

Per those sources, manufactured home industry professionals are giving to Democratic candidates there, not because they necessarily believe in them or their policies.  Rather, it is because they want access, after an election.

That said, while we [MHProNews] could have expressed it differently, MHProNews has published similar points to those of the professional who sent the message.  Nevertheless, it is a useful insight – and appreciated – as it underscores concerns we’ve been publishing, and gives us an opportunity to clarify the concerns that pro raised.”

There are certainly various reasons why some company or person gives to a certain PAC, and/or candidates.  The following graphic is from NBC News.

As MHProNews revealed recently, resident community group members often mistakenly believe that Democrats are the party of and for the poor.  But the data reflects what is shown on this page, and from the linked related reports.  Democrats have become the party of big money.  They are also often the party of purported monopolistic ‘moat builders.’

As Deadline Looms, FEMA Wants Money

In Calaveras County, California, the Butte Fire had a significant impact on the area, putting a number of area residents into temporary Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) housing.

Eighteen months later, some residents are still in their FEMA homes, looking for permanent housing. And now, FEMA says they are out of time.

According to the Calaveras Enterprise, the families will have to make the decision on whether or not they want to continue to stay in the homes or pack up and move, as the 18-month housing assistance deadline is coming up later this month.

The initial deadline, March 22, was extended via a state request to Sept. 22 for homeowners who have struggled to find permanent housing. However, during that period, homeowners are required to pay rent based at fair market value for each unit,” said Kelly Hudson, a FEMA spokeswoman for the region.

For resident Camille Green, the news is particularly difficult given her circumstances due to the fire.

Total wipeout, completely wiped out,” said Green. “Everything, completely everything. I didn’t even get my birth certificate out. Just grabbed anything with a heartbeat.

And that makes the news from FEMA hard to swallow. Green relies on social security and has limited room for things like moving in her budget.

It’s almost two years later and I’m still in a FEMA village,” said Green. “They are basically saying pay or get out.

AsDeadlineLoomsFEMAWantsMoneycreditWikipedia-postedtothedailybusinessnewsmhpronewsmhlivingnews

Resident Barbara Zelmer lives near Green and faces a similar situation, including healthcare and rebuilding costs for her lost home.

If I pay rent here, it’s going to put me on a deficit,” said Zelmer. “It’s going to put me in debt. If I have to pay rent here, I won’t be able to rebuild.

If I use the money I have and put it toward rebuilding (the money I received from the government) or if I use that toward rent, I’ll be rendered homeless either way if I don’t do something,” said Zelmer.

Green says that, as an owner, the idea of paying rent does not make sense.

I have to pay those land taxes no matter what I’m at,” said Green. “I don’t have the funds to pay for my land out there and stay somewhere else.

Green is considering getting a simple home and putting it on her land.

I’m stuck between a rock and a harder place. I can get along. I can haul water there, but I’m getting older and I’m not in good health, so at this point, I cannot get out there and take care of myself properly.

Zelmer agrees, and says that living in a FEMA unit isn’t high on her list of things to do.

To pay $800-or-something a month when I own my land?” asked Zelmer.

I shouldn’t have to pay rent; I’m an owner. I just need help getting home.

AsDeadlineLoomsFEMAWantsMoneycreditCalaverasEnterprise2-postedtothedailybusinessnewsmhpronewsmhlivingnews

Even with the challenges, both Green and Zelmer are hopeful that they will be out of the FEMA homes and back onto their land, with newly built homes, well before the FEMA deadline.

We want to go home. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful to have this place, but as you can see, it’s not very homey, and I did that on purpose; it’s temporary housing,” said Green.

The land still calls me and I will go home, and I will have a good life there. But as I look out across the valleys, my property is forever changed, no way to get around that.

Lawsuit and BBB warning about modular home retailer

November 6th, 2014 Comments off

better-built-homes-sign-credit=action-news-jax-posted-daily-business-news-mhpronews-com-The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a warning about modular home firm, Better Built Homes, based in St. Augustine, Florida. The BBB asserts that there have been 6 complaints since March 2014. The BBB says consumers are “alleging that they have signed a contract with the company and paid a substantial down payment without any work being completed or homes being left incomplete.”

Officials said they have received six complaints against Better Built Homes, Inc., since March 2014.

According to the BBB’s warning, consumers are “alleging that they have signed a contract with the company and paid a substantial down payment without any work being completed or homes being left incomplete.”

Action News tells MHProNews that Suzanne Englen and her husband bought a modular home and garage in Fruit Cove. She said it was supposed to be finished back in February. Instead, she moved into the home in October. They are quick to take your money and sign contracts,” she said. “But to actually get the work done is near impossible.” Englen says she’s called the company many times with little or no response. Now she said the company’s voice mailbox is full.

Based on complaints, the BBB has given the firm an “F” rating. A lawsuit is also pending in St. Johns County court against Better Built Homes, Inc. ##

West, Texas Schools using Modular Classrooms

September 12th, 2013 Comments off

The devastating April 17 explosion at the West Fertilizer Co. in West, Texas destroyed the intermediate, high school and parts of the middle school. The West Independent School District (ISD) received $2.75 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to purchase several modular classrooms that will temporarily serve as classrooms. Modular units for the science labs, the band hall, locker rooms and administrative offices should all arrive within two weeks, according to wacotrib.com. In terms of rebuilding the schools, FEMA offers two options, both related to Hurricane Sandy: Under the pre-Sandy method, there is no limit on the amount received, but there are restrictions on how it is spent; the post-Sandy method, MHProNews has learned, caps the spending but is less restrictive in how the funds are spent, and the money is received up front. The ISD hopes to have all new buildings by fall, 2015.

Irene, Two Years Later

ap-toby-talbolt-credit-weston-mhp-berlin-vt-post-irene-recovery-posted-daily-business-news-manufactured-housing-professional-news-.pngVPR tells MHProNews that most of the money from recovery efforts post tropical storm Irene went to rebuilding state and town roads and bridges. But signifcant sums were also used for relief of those, including in manufactured home communities like this one in Berlin, VT, to help storm victims with recovery efforts. Then Deputy Transportation Secretary Sue Minter was dubbed as the Irene Recovery Officer. When it came to working with individuals and families in the post-Irene recovery, Minter acknowledged there are still Vermonters rebuilding from the storm who did not receive the help they hoped for from FEMA or the state. “We pushed the envelope,” Minter says.  Where FEMA couldn’t help, Minter says many state and local organizations stepped in to provide assistance. She’s pleased that, “I wondered if we would ever get to this place. I know there are still people who have outstanding needs, but we really have come so far.” ##

Criminal charges demanded against bankrupt MH Dealer

August 29th, 2013 Comments off

A bankrupt Wheeler Rental and Mobile Home Sales have about a dozen customers hopping mad, with some demanding criminal charges. Oklahoma City’s KFOR told MHProNews that Jerry and Lisa White signed a check to Wheeler to purchase a bigger home for the three grandchildren they adopted. “We want to make a good environment for these children only to have the rug pulled from under us by people like this,” said White, a former lawman. Wheeler filed for Chapter 11, but White said, “I believe they had the intent to steal it. If they don’t want to refund our money, we need to do everything we can to see about getting criminal charges filed. I think they have the money to pay us.” Meanwhile, some ‘do good’ manufactured home industry professionals are seeking to mitigate the losses of alleged victims, by helping them get what they paid for, even though those pros won’t profit from the effort. MHProNews plans to track this Sooner state story. ##
