Easton, MA is poised to join six other southeastern MA communities by instituting rent controls in MHCs. By-laws that regulate rents, evictions, and minimum standards of operation are under the auspices of a town-appointed board. Boston tells MHProNews.com a 1994 referendum in MA eliminated most forms of rent control, but designated it as an option for local government when it comes to manufactured housing. According to Mary McBrady, executive director of the Massachusetts Manufactured Housing Association (MMHA), California and New Jersey are the only other states that have rent control for MH. If approved at a Town Meeting Feb. 6, Easton would join Kingston, Lakeville, Middleborough, Raynham, West Bridgewater, and Rockland in adopting MH rent control.
