Housing Economists Projections from NAHB, CoreLogic, Nationwide, and MHVille

HousingEconomistsProjectionsFromNAHBCoreLogicNationwideandMHVilleManufacturedHousingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

There has been scuttlebutt among talking heads in media about a looming recession for months.  People with the ‘right’ credentials are asked, and they soberly express their opinions – which they are entitled to – as to why they think that a recession is looming.  MHProNews has pushed back against that claim editorially, but the question remains, are those sources that warn of recession right or wrong?

Depending on the reporter or anchor involved in such an interviews with ‘experts,’ there may or may not be an obvious follow up question to their claims of a looming recession in the U.S.  The media follow up question should go something like this: ‘Given how strong the economy is now, based upon a raft of largely positive economic data, how is it possible that a recession would hit the U.S. so quickly?’

Just a few bullets.

1)    A record number of Americans are at work.

2)    Consumer confidence is near record highs.

3)    Small business confidence is also near historic records.

4)    A record number of jobs are open in the U.S.

5)    The Federal Reserve data, plus other economic indicators, suggest that for the foreseeable term, the economy has no apparent risk of recession, barring an unexpected cataclysm of some kind.

With those points in mind, let’s turn to a recent report by the OC Register, which interviewed various officials at a recent builders conference.  Their headline reads “Recession Not Likely Before 2021, Housing Economists Say.”

At a recent National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) conference 3 economists weighed in on this specific topic of an alleged looming recession, says the OC Register.  The bullets below are from their recent report.

  • This expansion will come to an end,” said David Berson, chief economist for Nationwide Insurance. But, he added, “the odds of a downturn in the next year are pretty low.”
  • Berson said the next recession probably won’t begin until late 2021 or 2022.
  • Frank Nothaft, chief economist for Irvine-based real estate data firm CoreLogic, said the risk of a possible recession likely will be high toward the end of 2020 and even higher in 2021 — after the next presidential inauguration.
  • After going up 3 percent in 2018, the NAHB predicts single-family home starts will increase 2 percent this year and an additional 4 percent to 928,000 detached houses in 2020.
  • The slowdown in immigration and the weakness in recruiting young Americans to the construction sector has contributed to a labor shortage that persists and continues,” the NAHB’s Dietz said. “Right now … we’re short more than 300,000 construction workers in the U.S.”
  • I think affordability is going to be the key issue (in how) housing advocates view the housing market in 2019,” Dietz said.

These bullets and factoids ought to spell boom times for manufactured housing.  So why is the industry struggling to achieve a mere 100,000 new homes?

Since the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) claims to represent all segments of factory-built housing, do they bear any accountability for the poor results?

How does one explain the bonuses paid to top MHI staffers, give the association’s failure to achieve the 500,000 new home shipments that President and CEO, Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison said could be achieved?

Road Blocks are Post-Production Ones, Says MHARR

The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) routinely cites facts – confirmed by third-party, and HUD research, that HUD Code manufactured housing builders are producing the industry’s best homes ever.  The problems, says MHARR, are coming from the post-production sector.

The issues including zoning and placement issues.

A new report, shown from the linked text-image box below, reflects a publicly undisputed troubling fact.  MHI on several test checks made in recent years by MHProNews has not contacted – much less intervened – several of the zoning and placement challenges that are increasingly impacting manufactured housing.

Why not?

The key phrase from a longer message by an MHI member-affiliate attorney told MHProNews on 2.25.2019, the following, “…For Clearlake [CA] however as a government entity, it should not have different standards for MH than stickbuilt for its code, since the whole idea of federal HUD preemption is to prevent unreasonable discrimination in land use and building standard decisions respecting manufactured housing.”

That report is the first of several related topics that are linked below the bylines and notices.

“Democrats Are Sinful Hypocrites. Just Like All of Us.” Weaponizing Information, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and MHVille

February 8th, 2019 Comments off

 DemocratsAreSinfulHypocritsJustLIkeAllofUsWeaponizingInformationWeaponizingINformationSenatorElizabethWarrenMHIvilleDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Erick Erickson is a one-time never-Trump Republican, who still quibbles over policy, strategy, and tactics with President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump. Erickson publishes a “Morning Briefing” and does radio.

So what?

It goes without saying for seasoned managers, owners, and investors that facts, performance – and accountability – all matter.

Experienced managers know the challenge of having someone look them in the eye, and lie to them.  Spin, lies, and half-truths are sadly common in our part of the affordable housing profession – just as they are in other professions.

The scenario that follows is getting wide play in the mainstream media.  That makes it a useful illustration of challenges that exist within MHVille, without seemingly taking a side on hot-button issues that impact manufactured housing.

Once the table is set in part one of this report, the Daily Business News on MHProNews will apply lessons from these current-event cases to issues that matter to manufactured housing.

With that tee up, let’s dive in.

Part I – Political Weaponization of Information

A few paragraphs from his emailed “Resurgent” are an interesting, right-of-center perspective.  It is one that MHProNews has not normally sourced from the right, which balanced left-of-center sources such as the New York Times that we routinely consider.  The Daily Business News on MHProNews also receives updates from the Boston Globe, the flagship newspaper in Senator Elizabeth Warren’s (MA-D) state. We will return to Senator Warren’s portion of the headline, deeper into this column.

There are scores of other inputs MHProNews turns to for information.  Sources run the gamut from within the affordable housing industry. They span political, economic, social, religious, health, and personal subgroups.  That plus outside media inputs offer a full range of insights or inspiration for manufactured home professionals.

As long-time readers know, we are eclectic.

Full Measure’s Sharyl Attiksson’s media bias chart is useful in sorting out the agendas behind various headlines and news sources.

“Check Your Facts,” “Follow the Money” – Journalist Sharyl Attkisson, Fake News, MHVille Takeaways

This article’s headline includes a direct quote from Erickson, shown again, below. That and his following paragraphs point to the developing controversy in VA over three scandals from three different top officials.  The screen capture below that precedes Erickson’s thoughts are from the ubiquitous Drudge Report.

NYPostDrudgeVirginaIsFOrLosersDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The seemingly odd occurrences in Virginia are arguably illustrations of the “weaponization of information.” One can argue the merits of each of these troubling claims.  But each instance of the ‘weaponization of information’ ought to remind MHVille how a similar process impacts our industry, and the largely  honorable manner that manufactured home professionals honorably seek to serve millions of Americans.  That aspect of this will be explored, following the bulleted quoted paragraphs from Erickson, which are bracketed by two mainstream media videos that outline the specifics of the concerns in VA.

TheResurgentDemocratsAreSinfulHypocritesJustLikeTheRestofUsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

•          Both the press corps Democrats and the political Democrats have used President Trump’s election to advance the idea that their side is scandal free, racist free, and pure as the driven snow. They have asked Americans to ignore much and have loudly raised standards to impossible heights to ensure they have a moral advantage over their political opponents.

•          “Believe all women,” they claimed. Brett Kavanaugh was unqualified to be on the Supreme Court because of an unproven accusation. Then other, less credible allegations came in, some with stories that kept changing, and we were all supposed to still believe them.

•          Anyone who voted for President Trump was presumed to be a racist. Republicans had to quickly denounce anyone and everyone who said anything that even hinted at being racist. The Democrats have turned a blind eye to problematic bigots within their own party. They have used allies in the press to paint this bigotry as a Republican stunt.

•          But they cannot hide now thanks to Virginia. Read More…

The Slime

Mudslinging – no pun intended on the racially-sensitive blackface issue – has been a tactic in American politics for decades.

Arguably, smear tactics have been used in the U.S. for centuries.  Candidate Trump was attacked in a similar fashion to the VA scandals above.  The lines of attacks are uncovered via “opposition research” or “oppo research” – which in Mr. Trump’s case produced the Access Hollywood/Billy Bush hot-mic video in 2016.

Apparently giving up hope that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will bring down the 45th president, some in Congress now want his tax returns, hoping to find fact-based dirt – or the impression of dirt.  Per Forbes, the president’s net worth has declined significantly since he’s entered the White House.

President Donald Trump’s net worth has declined by more than
$1 billion since the year he launched his presidential campaign
,” per CNBC on Oct 2, 2018.

So when a broad range of third-party evidence is considered, the Oval Office has cost the president money, not earned him more of it.

Instead of being concerned about evidence of any specific crime, what the nation is witnessing is the targeting of individuals, hoping to find something embarrassing might topple a target – Democrat or Republican – out of office.

The mere hunt for dirt, hope some, can create an impression of wrongdoing.

These examples make it clear that oppo research that aims to weaponize information occurs across the left-right, Democrat and Republican, and other divides.

OppositionResearchDefinitionDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Embarrassing oppo research is arguably targeting Senator Elizabeth Warren on her Native American issue.

It should be noted that editorially, MHProNews and MHLivingNews have opposed specific policies of Warren’s.  But honest policy debates should be just that, done ethically.  That should include in Warren’s case giving due consideration to a theme of the Massachusetts senator that we editorially believe merits positive attention.   The #OpenMarkets issue can be accessed via the text/image linked box below.

Who Will Act? Will Senator Elizabeth Warren, and/or the Trump Administration Act to Restore Open Markets, Thereby Supporting Affordable Manufactured Homes?

It is idealistic to imagine that the oppo research industry and tactics will end as a result of the issues noted above and below.  Warren and her policies should be viewed apart from efforts to discredit her based upon the obvious error in judgment over her now past Native American claims.  That said, the same courtesy ought to be provided to others too, on both sides of the left-right divide.  That includes President Trump.  For example, the often used smear tactic of alleged racism should be as denounced and ignored as any yet unproven Democratic cases.  For more on the ‘racist’ claims, see the report linked below. Carson’s comments are noteworthy.

Is POTUS Trump Racist? “Here Today, Here to Stay” – HUD Secretary Ben Carson Sounds Off

Demeaning Opponents, “Opposition Research”

As noted, defaming an opponent – often by using carefully editing information – are examples of the ‘weaponization of information.’ It’s been going on for years, under the mantra of “Oppo Research.”  This issue can impact the purest among us.  It clearly influences public policy – via the dark-but-robust industry of opposition research.  See what the Google search below reflects.

 WeaponizingInformationOppositionResearchDailyBusinessnewsMHProNews603

Opposition research is big business.  Understanding the principles behind it arguably could help manufactured housing (MH) professionals and researchers better understand some factors that explain why manufactured home sales are underperforming.

Part II

The Weaponization of DATA, Business Information, and MHVille

MH Industry’s professionals of whatever political party, professional segment, or personal persuasion can see from Part I of this survey how some seemingly negative personal information is weaponized.

But there are other ways that data – facts, figures, plus quotes – can arguably be weaponized too.

•          Information used to harm a perceived opponent or targeted party.

•          Information can be withheld that might benefit a perceived opponent.

•          Partial information – a mix of the good and bad – can create the illusion of balance, when it fact it can be a carefully crafted hit-piece. Brad Lovin, the Executive Director of the North Carolina Manufactured and Modular Homebuilders Association put it this way to MHProNews.

PublishingHandPickedInformationCanBeWorsefortheImpressionItMakesOnManufacturedHomesandOurIndustryThanStatingEntirelyFalseInfo-BradLovinNCMHA

Every month, manufactured home data compiled and published by the Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) has disclaimers on it. IBTS collects shipment and production information by state on behalf of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which is the primary regulatory body for HUD Code manufactured homes.

That IBTS data has for decades had an * – an asterisk – on production totals where three or fewer production centers are located in that state. The reason IBTS does so is to protect proprietary information.

But the reality is that “proprietary” information can be gained in a variety of ways. Some are licit, others are not.

MHProNews explored in 2018 reports how field representatives working for Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage and other brands purportedly gather “intelligence.” Insights about other companies gathered by representatives of the Berkshire brands occurs when they visit a retailer or community.

So, one may not be a Clayton or 21st retailer – yet a firm could still have multiple files about any given operation on hand in various offices.

Clayton Homes and 21st Mortgage’s Manufactured Housing “Spies”

In January of 2019, other tips from well placed sources connected to the Berkshire brands operating in manufactured housing pointed to other allegations of an even more sinister use of data collection.   See that disturbing report, below.

CFPB and 21st, Second Shoe Drops? Flooring w/21st Mortgage Corp? Insider Tips

Some industry professionals’ wonders if the facts, video statements, and troubling revelations found in the report below were a one time tragedy in the past?

Bridging Gap$, Affordable Housing Solution Yields Higher Pay, More Wealth, But Corrupt, Rigged Billionaire’s Moat is Barrier

The evidence suggests, no.

Rather, it seems to be part of an ongoing pattern of activity.  Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage Corp, Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance (VMF), the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and attorneys that represent them have been asked to clarify, refute, or correct any of these items.  So far, silence. The opportunity for them to confirm or clarify is still open.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, Was Information Weaponized Against Her Presidential Aspirations?

The only intelligent answer to that subheading question is absolutely. Democrats and Republicans alike, per sources, have used the Native Americans ancestral claim against her. The issue is arguably aimed to derail the maverick progressive law professor and senator in her planned run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.

Some even in her own party are already writing Warren off, due to weaponized information. Others – looking at POTUS Trump – say, not so fast.

The story from VA is just the latest in a series of such tales that could reach back for decades, or even centuries. Erickson is correct in saying that it applies to everyone. If you have ethical standards, then the odds are good that you’ve violated them. We’re all arguably ‘guilty’ of doing, or not doing, something we should have.

If someone learns information about you that may even appear to be unsavory or unethical, that information can be weaponized and used against you in business, politics, personally, or whatever.

Most people arguably don’t think in these terms. That’s precisely what makes the weaponization of information useful to those who do so. They know it can be used to ‘turn off’ potential clients, customers, political, and public policy sources.  While MHProNews is not endorsing Senator Warren, we’ve spotlighted her for very specific reasons. There are – at least on paper – Democrats like Warren who say they favor strong anti-trust action.  What makes Warren’s plan more compelling than many is that she argues there is no new legislation needed.

If you are a Democrat, or lean Democratic, consider her fascinating case, presented here.

Industry Takeaways?

The ways that information can be weaponized are legion. It is why critical thinking is useful for managers, investors, and business leaders.  Just because someone postures being a friend, are they in fact a foe?

Consider the troubling case of Regional Enterprises, reported below.  Per sources, they were treated as a top independent, until they weren’t. Friendly for years – then in one day, foes the next?

“Mobile Home Militia,” Retail/Production Sources, Sound Alarm Against Clayton Homes, CMH, New “Anti-Competitive Practices” Allegation

MHProNews has spotlighted numerous times purported examples of misinformation or the weaponization of information. Some are linked herein or further below. Investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson sums it up well.

Follow the money. Follow the evidence. Think objectively for yourself.  Or as President Ronald Reagan periodically said, “Trust, but verify.”

BrightIdeaLightBulbSenatorElizabethWarrenPotusDonaldTrumpCloseReadingFactsBringLEftRightTogetherforMHVilleNation

Among the featured reports below is a surprising look at possible points of agreement between Senator Elizabeth Warren – a 2020 Democratic Presidential hopeful – and President Donald J. Trump (GOP).

If so, it’s arguably a big plus for our industry, consumers, and nation.  See that on What’s New on MHLivingNews.

There are several reports connected to Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage, and a bold new effort alleged by numerous sources of Clayton trying to rig the marketplace.  Names are named, facts are cited.  Clayton has not yet denied it. It’s hot.

There is also developments on past and new issues regarding 21st, wholesale and other practices. See that report, further below.

There’s a new infographic packed report.  It spotlights at-a-glance housing data, including manufactured home insights.

Then there are exclusive insights on NPR, PBS, and the dark money behind them, which for whatever reasons periodically target manufactured housing.

On the Masthead is a look at why no one can truly understand the macro-picture of modern manufactured homes – including why we are still at historically low production levels – without understanding Warren Buffett’s concept of the strategic, economic moat.

There are new reports last week about Cavco, their controversy – and legal maneuvers – at play there.  There are surprisingly useful comments from George Soros, see that report too.

New reports from HUD Secretary Ben Carson and other HUD related issues are likewise linked below.

Fannie Mae and manufactured housing, political, economic, market news, and much more follow.

With no further adieu, here are the headlines from the week that was January 27, 2019 to February 3, 2019.

”Your Time is Up, White People” SA Politician Declares, Stirring Up Unrest Impacts MHVille, USA

December 10th, 2018 Comments off

YourTimeIsUpWhitePeopleStirringUpUnrestImpactsMHVilleUSA

It’s your own personal rights, property, and wealth that are in the crosshairs. If what is described from news accounts that follow hasn’t yet happened to you, odds are that someone at a meeting you or they attended know about just such an incident on some personal level.

Meaning, this is an underdiscussed trend already at work in the manufactured housing industry – a.k.a. MHVille.

Today’s report will start out with actual incidents from a distance – across the waters, and further south. That sets the stage for global tendencies. Then, we will walk backward toward the U.S.A. and specific ways that this is troubling trend is already at work in manufactured housing, and/or in a city or town not too far from you. Because what is a maturing problem overseas, is arguably already underway here in the U.S.A. too.

“Your Time is Up” – Whites About to Lose Big

SOUTH Africa (SA) has set a date – March 2019 – when a much-criticized land grab called “expropriations” can begin after a politician named Cyril Ramaphosa declared: “Your time is up, white people,” said the UK Daily Star.

In France, riots are spreading. They began with protests over ever-higher gas taxes – so-called “carbon taxes” tied to global warming – the science of which is surprisingly still in dispute. ICYMI or need a refresher later on, see the 5-minute expert video and related report on that issue, and how it impacts MHVille, by clicking on the linked box below.

Climate Change, Energy, Riots, and Manufactured Housing in Green Era

In oil-rich Venezuela, after a decade of socialism, the infrastructure is decaying.  That oil rich nation is now importing oil. The state grabbed – “nationalized” – their oil industry after socialists came to power about 10 years ago. Americans investors are among those who arguably lost out. But among the real losers are the Venezuelans, who after a decade of socialist control that they voted for, are now so hungry, they’ve reportedly lost an average of 19 pounds. Once one of the most prosperous nations in Latin America, Venezuela‘s economy is now a basket case. The graphic below is part of a larger report found by clicking on the linked box that follows it.

To avoid having this happen in America, “We, the People” must understand that socialism, communism, and other faux promises of ‘free stuff’ are all based upon lies. The Chinese said centuries ago, teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime, but give a man a fish, and you only feed him for a day. Working age People must Produce, that’s life. In order to encourage production, the fruits of a person’s labors must be respected.  The proper goal of government isn’t to redistribute income, rather, it is to protect personal rights, peace, and to protect private property.  Otherwise, government becomes an enemy of the people it is ideally supposed to defend.  Trade groups like MHARR and NFIB arguably understand those lessons.

How to Avoid Losing Billions, Huge Loses Reported by WSJ, Other Media

In my nation of origin, Iran, the American-backed Shah of Iran was toppled decades ago by promises to the Persian people their that ‘electricity would be free,’ and that the nation’s oil money would be ‘shared with all of the people.’ The empty promises of ‘free stuff‘ and ‘free moneynever happened. ICYMI, you can read more at the link below.

“You Made Me, Promises, Promises…” Historic Iranian, American Lessons in Freedom

Instead, the Persian people have arguably grown poorer and are now less free.

The current Iranian regime might have toppled during the 2009 ‘green’ movement against the mullahs in 2009, had then President Barack Obama deftly intervened. Mr. Obama and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not do so.  Instead, years later he cut a controversial deal that released about $100 billion to Iran, per the New York Times.  Meaning, to the very government that has kept the Iranians poorer.

What some Iranian expatriates in the U.S. have understandably called ‘fascists’ that rule Iran, are using those billions in funds released by the U.S. and others in a guerrilla war against neighboring nations, which includes the killing of Americans service members.

What was former President Obama thinking when he gave to the leaders of a nation that lies to its people, and gets large, radicalized crowds to chant “death to America” or “death to Israel” as has been seen in globally seen televised marches?

And here is how it comes closer to MHVille.  Ponder how prominent people involved in MHVille – such as Warren Buffett or Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) PAC Chair Nathan Smith – are all-in with political leaders like the former 44th president, Secretary Clinton, and typically Democratic candidates that here in America are at times also promising something allegedly ‘free’ at no cost to voters.

Nathan & Mary Lee Chance Smith, Leaders in ‘Anti-Trump Resistance,’ Manufactured Housing Impact?

The money trail from billionaires Warren Buffett and George Soros has been previously documented, as it links to groups like the problematic MHAction and better known AntiFa.  Recall, that MHProNews is for free enterprise and limited government, but sees as problematic manipulations of the American system in unjust, thumbs-on-the-scale, or crony-capitalist ways. ICYMI, you can click the linked box below for details, because we follow the facts, money, and evidence.

Prosperity Now, Protests, Indivisible Project, Warren Buffett, George Soros, POTUS Donald Trump, MHAction and Manufactured Housing – Following the Money

MHI inexplicably elevated in their purported ‘newsletter’ a policy initiative by Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA-D) that is arguably harmful to the interests of most of manufactured housing professionals. Furthermore, Senator Warren embraced those radical groups, the same ones that disrupted MHI’s own speaking event of HUD Secretary Ben Carson, MD.  What is MHI thinking?  What are Warren Buffett, his Berkshire Hathaway lieutenants that operate in manufactured housing, and leaders like Nathan Smith of SSK Communities thinking?

Expose! Why Has Warren Buffett/BH Funded Anti-MHC Activists, MHAction? Why Fund Attacks on ELS, Frank Rolfe, Blackstone Group?

Let’s give them their due.  Buffett, the Claytons, and Nathan Smith are intelligent.  So whatever they have in mind – since they continue to support the same leftist groups and policies – is there any doubt that their support to radical groups and radical politicos is intentional?

Award-winning manufactured housing legend Dick Moore, who helped launch the MHIdea independent retailer initiative, has said for the record that he was audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for political, not tax reasons, during the Obama administration.  Moore alleges that they did so as an attack of his written statements about limited government and free enterprise, among other topics he’s written about.

Here in America…AntiFa and MHAction

In the U.S., one of the better known radical groups is called AntiFa. In Manufactured Housing, it’s MHAction that has surpassed – for better or worse – the attention once given to the more mild-by-comparison national resident group, NMHOA.

Manufactured Home Resident Group President Cautions Against MHAction, Surprising Background Reveal to Manufactured Housing Action

One MHVille pro called MHProNews HQ recently to say that he’s been personally accosted by an MHAction member multiple times.

That activist MHAction member, per said MH Community owner, poked at the businessman with a walking stick – a cane – reportedly in the presence of several others.  The community owner in question feels caught, because he doesn’t want to say or do something that might cause the narrative to turn against himself.  The community owners doesn’t want him or his community to end up getting sued. So he says he is relatively passive during such incidents.

As noted, MHAction has disrupted the speech of HUD Secretary Ben Carson, MD. MHAction have protested – Blackstone, Equity LifeStyle Properties, and RV Horizons by name and/or in person – among others.

That radical group are holding organizing events. One MHAction event made the news in Illinois, pre-midterm election. Some pooh-pooh these as ‘not drawing very many attendees.’ Well, that may be true, but that misses the point. Such radical movements that toppled once-free Cuba started with only small groups too.  That same is true for each of the nations noted herein.  These radical movements begin small, gather steam, and then historically become quite potent.  One quality that they have is that they don’t stop until they win.

SouthFloridaCubaNorthSouthKoreaSatelliteNightSocialismFreeMarketsManufacutredHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Satellite photos of Cuba vs South Florida, on the left, North Korea vs. South Korea on the right. The freer a society, the more productive the people, and the more prosperous the people. Radical socialist movements, by contrast, lead to impoverishing their people.

This issue may be racial in South Africa and in some areas too.  But as a woman of Middle Eastern origins, let’s note that can perhaps better be understood not so much in racial terms, but as “have nots” being stirred into action against those who have. But one must ask, who are those who are stirring the pot? And how does this pattern of activity get stopped?

The short answers are that at times, powerful forces are acting behind the scenes of such radical movements.  And as to how they are stopped, one potent answer is education and historic lessons.

First, those who are drawn into these movements are often already unhappy.  The manufactured home community owner noted above said that he sincerely believes that man who has poked at him with the walking stick is mentally unstable. Perhaps so, but either way, he’s been attracted into a group that is making false promises.  Time and again, around the world, those who make promises like those of MHAction have made fail to deliver.

In Russia just over a century ago, the Tsars (or Czars) were toppled from power by Bolsheviks who were socialists that became known as communists. The nation grew poorer as a result.  There are historical references to Western nations – including some with ties to Wall Street – supporting the Russian revolutionaries. Think about that for a few moments — successful Americans and westerner capitalists helping destabilize Russia by supporting socialists, who later turned against the West as cold war communists. Troubling, but true.

The Democratic party today is arguably not the same as the party of Democratic President John F. Kennedy.  President Kennedy signed taxes cuts into law, and revenues to the federal government rose.  Former Democrat, turned Republican, President Ronald Reagan (GOP), led tax cuts and revenues to the federal government rose too, as the graphics above demonstrate.

The Trump Tax Cuts has spurred more tax revenue overall. These are facts. The lower rates spur more investment.

HeritageOrgWarOnPovertyAfter50YearskeyTakeawaysManufacturedHousingINdustryDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

22TrillionSpentWarOnPovertyHeritagePostedDaillyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The estimated $22 Trillion dollars spent on the War on Poverty, which turned 50 a while back, exceeds the total national debt of some 21 trillion dollars. The poverty rate was coming down in the U.S. through free enterprise. The perhaps well intentioned, but still misguided, impact of poverty programs has not proven to move the needle of poverty, as the graphic above demonstrates. Or as MHProNews publisher L. A. “Tony” Kovach said in a Masthead over a year ago, ‘whatever you subsidize, you tend to get more of it.’

Currently under former Democrat turned Republican, the 45th President of the United States (POTUS), Donald J. Trump, tax cuts passed last year have already sparked precisely the same trend as occurred during the Democratic President Kennedy and Republican President Reagan. So why is that trend under-reported by much of the mainstream media?

Part of the solution for our industry and our nation is to cut regulations, taxes, and to cut the size and scope of the federal government.  To minimize disruption, that process takes time.

PresidentTrumpCutsFederalWorkforceJobsDailyBusinessNewsMHpronews

But that process of taking billions of dollars away from deep-pocket groups that buy votes to get what they want from the federal government is underway. It’s President Trump and those aligned with him – not MHI – that got the roll backs of S2155.  Some key powers behind MHI – such as Warren Buffett and Nathan Smith – are openly for more big government, while MHI claims to be working for reduced regulations?  Once the facts are laid out, aren’t some of MHI’s claims blatantly misleading?

PresidentDonaldJTrumpSignsS2155ManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

That process of subsidized housing and the like has demonstrably cost manufactured housing billions of dollars a year, and has cost our nation trillions of dollars over the years. It also creates an avoidable underclass, which tend to vote Democratic, because they are the ones promising more ‘free stuff.’

RevDonaldTyeJrBusinessmanManufacturedHousingAdvocateDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Tye explained that public housing – an entitlement – often yields addiction. Ownership vs. renting or living in “projects” leads to integrity, a view he likens to those of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ColumbiaPointHousingProjectBostonMA-AHI-postedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The Columbia Point Housing Project had near the end of its first life cycle only some 300 housing units that were habitable. That’s the same number Donald Tye, Jr. used in his example to describe the better way for people, and government. Quality, affordable single family manufactured homes.

The manufactured home industry must realize that however imperfect any politician is – and they are all human, and thus all imperfect – the most pro-manufactured housing industry politico since 2000 is demonstrably POTUS Donald J. Trump.    The video on the report found on the page linked below shows the president, the first lady, Vice President Mike Pence, and other officials in Florida, touring a manufactured home community.  President Trump is mingling with residents, and talking about ‘the good people‘ living in that manufactured home community.

“I knew right from the beginning.” When President Trump, First Lady Melania, VP Pence Toured Manufactured Home Community

Where was there any similar trip by President Obama to a manufactured home community?

Instead, the Obama administration imposed heavy new regulatory burdens on the manufactured housing side of the affordable housing industry.  Apparently, those burdens are what Warren Buffett, the Claytons, their affiliated lenders, Nathan Smith and others involved at MHI want, because that is what campaign donations indicate they have often politically supported.

Protests of manufactured housing industry firms or leaders like HUD Secretary Carson – like the ones shown in the video below – are de facto being funded by big Democratic donors, like billionaires Warren Buffett and George Soros.

Do you see why a growing number of people within MHI are questioning their own organization? Why more are at MHI are seeing that trade body as a Berkshire Hathaway-led front group, instead of a lobbying group that is working on behalf of the majority of manufactured housing independents?

“It’s a Terrible Idea,” Comments from Manufactured Home Community Owners, Senior Management, and Investors

With that backdrop, now flashback to the video interview at Tunica with former president Danny Ghorbani, and current President and CEO Mark Weiss, JD, with the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR).  Do you see why MHARR’s staff leaders think that the Trump Administration is better for the industry than the prior one was?

Housing and the Policies of Much of the Left’s Leaders

Keep in mind that these leftist groups are making claims and promises about housing too.  As a community owner told MHProNews, the biggest competition for our industry for decades has been subsidized housing.  Those who promise that are running counter to the interests of the vast majority of manufactured housing professionals.  In as much as it traps people in poverty, it is bad for Americans too.  See what the manufactured housing advocate, the Rev. Donald Tye, Jr. said in his in-depth video interview, linked here.

Facts & Analysis – Senator Elizabeth Warren re: Manufactured Housing Institute Memo to MHI Members, 10-3-2018

As or more important, those promises from the left run counter to the interests of tens of millions of Americans who want to own, but are stuck in rentals instead.  See that report, by clicking the box linked below.

The American Dream, Arguably Among the Most Profitable, But Least Understood Stories in the USA Today

These are not matters of mere opinion, to be shrugged off lightly.  The facts, evidence, and money trail are being revealed, step-by-step.

Then look at who is rising on the left in the Democratic Party in America…

AlexandriaOcasioCortezDemocraticSocialistWikipediaDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Once the issues are better understood, the vast majority of the nation could come together on a range of issues that span racial, political, religious, or other group labels. As some in the GOP have noted, President Trump isn’t a classic Republican. He’s spans the left-right divide in several ways with pragmatic policies that are arguably based upon the American ideals of life, liberty, and property.

Openly “Democratic Socialist” candidates are coming into office, like the already well-known Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-D), or her longtime forerunner, Bernie Sander (VT-I, but caucuses with the Democrats).

We in MHVille can, should, and must learn from what is happening in France, South Africa, and Venezuela.

Propaganda is demonstrably being fed to the masses, and millions are ‘buying into it.’ In MHVille, MHI has arguably weaponized their information to their members. While it would be inaccurate to say that all news is fake, or that all MHI news is propaganda.  But there is more than enough of it that is weaponized or demonstrably inaccurate, so that our industry’s professionals – and the nation – are increasingly looking askance at MHI or mainstream news.

NothingIsChangedUntilItisChallenged-768x318

MHProNews’ parent operation demonstrated to MHI over the course of years options for lending, and ways to improve the industry’s image. For years, even though our parent operation was an MHI member – and showed the way to grow business – MHI leaders ignored those options. Why? Could it be that slow growth allowed more consolidation of businesses, and at a cheaper price?

We can afford to lose money — even a lot of money. Controlling the narrative is something Warren Buffett and every serious political or business operative in America wants to do whenever possible.

One only has to look at how much Buffett speaks to the media, and owns or influences media via the giant conglomerate he leads, named Berkshire Hathaway.

Warren Buffett Strikes Deal with Lee to Manage Berkshire Units, plus MH Market Updates

The battle over controlling the narrative about manufactured housing is something that has been occurring inside and outside of the MH industry for decades.

But arguably no one before Berkshire Chairman Buffett, or Vice-Chair Charlie Munger, have had the depth of media connections, ownership, savvy, and influence they do.

Flashback to the late Howard Walker

Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS) Vice-Chair, and then Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) Executive Committee Treasurer, Howard Walker was previously reported by the Daily Business News on MHProNews to have encouraged MHI President and CEO Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison as follows.

HowardWalkerManufacturedHousingInstituteNathanSmithRichardJennisonPresidentManufacturedHomeIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews598

Nathan Smith was then MHI chairman at the time of this message from ELS Vice-Chairman, and MHI Treasurer, Howard Walker. Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison was and is the President and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach is the publisher and co-founder of MHProNews.com and MHLivingNews.com.

What until now has largely unknown by the bulk of the industry is this message from Jennison to MHProNews publisher, L.A. ‘Tony’ Kovach. That was later followed up with the NDA from MHI general counsel, Rick Robinson, JD.

RevisedNDAemailRickRobisonDickJennisonManufacturedHousingInstituteMHIlogoDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews600

MHProNews could produce other such messages, which MHI would have too. So it is unlikely that they will deny the obvious, namely, that they wanted to buy MHProNews. Isn’t the logic of that they wanted to control or own the MH Industry’s most popular trade media?

NDA’s and MHI

Note that both Walker and Berkshire brand MH lender 21st Mortgage Corp President and CEO Tim Williams both praised MHProNews before and after that spring of 2014 time frame.

  • Jennison said he wanted MHI to buy MHProNews.
  • Walker, himself an attorney, participated in a discussion that advocated a formal, transparent relationship. See the image captured, above.
  • MHProNews’ publisher, L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach, was covered by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) at the time, which MHI requested by Jennison and MHI VP and General Counsel, Rick Robinson.
  • Due to the NDA, Kovach was unable for years to discuss this matter in any form or fashion.

But the Timeframe Covered by that NDA has now Passed…

Sources with MHI and past MHI VPs tell MHProNews that there’s a “wide use” of NDAs by the Arlington, VA based trade association.

NDAs are clearly a way to control people, who might otherwise communicate on an issue or topic.  That in turn controls a narrative.

Kevin Clayton, President and CEO of Clayton Homes in the video and report linked below, mentions how they like to work with nonprofits.  MHI is a nonprofit, one of several they work with. That statement by Clayton is an important revelation, one of several made in that nearly hour long interview video.

The Daily Business News has been reporting on how voices that span the left-right divide have said the high degree of control that American news media outlets are controlled by a handful of conglomerates.

To see the full on-the-record statement by Williams to MHProNews, click here.

What is important is that MHI initiated a move to buy MHProNews.

Recap

Recapping the facts in evidence: MHI, and senior people with MHI, saw the value of owning and/or controlling the most read news read by MH industry professionals.

It must be noted that before and since that time,

  • MHProNews continued to publish MHARR news, not just MHI news,
  • and that editorially, MHProNews supported MHARR on some issues, and MHI, state associations, along with numerous other sources.

And Williams himself said that we strive for balance.

TimWilliamsWeAllMakeMistakesTonyCorrectedErrorsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

That was 2015.  Williams knows that more recently, MHProNews has often asked him, MHI, officials at Clayton, et al, for comments on issues related to alleged efforts to monopolize – as much as possible -both messaging to industry professionals, and consolidate industry itself. The method for that is found in the link below. They’ve not disputed the documents, some signed by Williams, nor the analysis.

Warren Buffett Would be Okay With Clayton Homes Losing Money, Says Kevin Clayton – But Why?

Fool Me Once…

Our publisher says, “There are times I ponder the quote,Fool me once, shame on you [meaning, the person that pulled the underhanded trick]. But fool me twice, shame on me [meaning, for falling for the same trick again].”

Publisher L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach says that now MHVillage Co-President Darren Krolewski approached him at the Louisville Show a couple of shows ago. “Would you consider selling out?” – Krolewski asked Tony Kovach.

The conversion took place on the Louisville show floor, and covered other topics. Our publisher made no direct comment on Krolewski’s question. But only a few minutes after the conversation ended, Krolewski and MHI President and CEO Jennison were seen on the show floor talking.

MHInsiderManufacturedHousingINdustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsIt’s obvious that MHI and the powers that be associated with them want to control the narrative within the industry,” Kovach said. “They support those in MHVille bloggers and publishers – like MHVillage owned MHInsider – who will publicly support MHI, that’s what the open evidence reflects. It is equally obvious that MHVille professionals largely aren’t buying the arguable propaganda’ that MHInsider and others are putting out (see photo, taken on the final day of the Tunica show).”

We focus on what sources with apparent knowledge tell us, we follow the money, the evidence, and use common sense. We then line up what people say, and compare it with what they in fact do,” said Kovach.” “We give MHI, the key Berkshire brands in MH, and others the opportunity to comment, clarify, deny, or whatever.”

It’s also worth noting obvious connections. Using our “wheat and chaff” methodology, we are less concerned with the source – be it left, right, or neutral – than the evidence and logic of the source. Some sources can be correct on a given topic, yet may be wildly inaccurate on others.

Buffett’s Concerns Over Journalism

Buffett has expressed concerns over journalism and journalists, but still believes there’s value in journalism.

The smarter the journalists are, the better off society is. For to a degree, people read the press to inform themselves – and the better the teacher, the better the student body.” – Warren Buffett, per BrainyQuote.

Buffett addresses journalists routinely, but they are often ‘friendly’ sources. He owns numerous media outlet, starting with the newspaper based in Berkshire’s capital city, Omaha. Isn’t it all a part of controlling the narrative?

Why did Buffett himself defend Clayton, their lenders, or Wells Fargo when they were under mainstream media attack? Why didn’t he defend and promote the good name of manufactured housing industry in the same fashion?

MHI’s Jennison may have supplied the answer. He said the industry needed to grow slowly. Why?

Why should MH grow slowly, when there’s an affordable housing crisis? Why should MH have fallen so far behind the RV industry? Why did RVs recover more quickly than MH?

It’s In Plain Sight

The best place to hide is often in plain sight.

But hiding in plain sight doesn’t discount the possibility that Berkshire – while allowing other forces to press on the industry through regulations, zoning, media, and other means – may have used MHI in ways that violated antitrust guidelines that MHI themselves have published. See that MHI document, linked here.

As of this date, after repeated requests to MHI and executives with various Berkshire brands operating in MHVille, readers should note that they’ve offered no alternative explanation or defense to these allegations and documented concerns.

Rather, they and their apparently rewarded surrogates do cheer leading, perhaps hoping to continue to distract the industry, even as they’ve demonstrably worked to consolidate the industry.

Now you know why an executive told the Daily Business News, “Tony, if MHProNews is writing about it, I want to know about it.”

That executive isn’t alone, as LinkedIn reports a record number of profile views of our publisher.

Main Place in MHVille That’s Cracked the Glass Ceiling?

September 4th, 2018 Comments off

The glass ceiling is the terminology used to describe an invisible – yet solid and real – barrier for advancement commonly applied to women.

Let’s be clear. In many respects, MHVille is a male-dominated profession.

That’s not to say that the glass ceiling doesn’t exist in other areas of American business, because it

demonstrably does.  For example, the glass ceiling has long existed in politics. A peek around the world and into history reveals the slow evolution of women into today’s broadly understood status as co-equal to that of men. But there are still today numerous countries, perhaps most notably in Muslim dominated nations, where women are not viewed as equals to men.

In MHVille, there’s been several interesting examples of cracks in the proverbial glass ceiling.

For example, the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) hired Gail Cardwell as their president, over a decade ago.

Champion Homebuilders, now part of Skyline Champion (SKY), had Phyllis Knight as a division president for a time.  An interview with her while she was still in the industry is found at this link here.

There are any number of independent retailers, communities, and service providers that are owned or operated by a woman, or are ‘mom and pop’ – husband and wife operations. The parent operation to MHProNews, LifeStyle Factory Homes, LLC is co-owned by a woman, whose name is on the byline at the end of this article.

That gives the writer a unique perspective on the topic of the glass ceiling in the industry.

The Most Visible Place in MHVille for Women?

Women work in factories, at retail sales centers, in offices of all kinds, and by the thousands in manufactured home communities.

But perhaps the single most leadership-visible position that women have broken the glass ceiling in MHVille is at the state association level.

At the time this photo was taken of about half of the members of MHEC, over 40 percent of those in the picture are women executives. One man who’s since retired was replaced by a female executive director.

At any given time for some years, women have held numerous executive directors roles by the dozens in the manufactured housing industry.

Two exclusive interviews with women working at the state association level are found here and here, with letters from lady executives to MHProNews linked here and here. A recent list of MHEC members included 22 women among the 53 state association level executives, or about 41.5 percent.

This year, in Arizona, two women represent each of the major political parties – Democrats and Republicans – for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Jeff Flake.

A driving force behind the creation of a new national land-lease communities association is a woman, Susan Brenton. For more on her thoughts on that topic, click here, or the story linked below.

Rose the Riveter, Wikipedia.

Often overlooked, save by experts like L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach, is the fact that a significant part of the home-buying decision in millions of households is made or largely influenced by women.

As we ponder Labor Day, it’s also good to remember the image of Rosie the Riveter. While mostly men fought on the land, sea, and air, woman worked to care for the wounded, and to build the weapons of war used by American men.

So, this post isn’t to in any way belittle or elevate one gender over another.

Rather, it’s to recognize the reality that women’s roles are to be respected, along-side that of men, in or beyond MHVille. ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Critical Thinking Skills, Crucial For Well Grounded, Evidence over Emotion Based Independent Thought in MHVille

April 30th, 2018 Comments off

CriticalThinkingMACATManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews520

In society, politics, investing, business, romance, and careers there is a routine tug-of-war between emotions and rational thought.

The modern era, not unlike that of yellow journalism from over a century ago, finds competing and often partisan sources presenting views of the same event in often profoundly different ways.

Yellow journalism was a style of newspaper reporting that emphasized sensationalism over facts. During its heyday in the late 19th century it was one of many factors that helped push the United States and Spain into war in Cuba and the Philippines, leading to the acquisition of overseas territory by the United States,” says History.State.gov.  To rephrase, yellow journalism is designed to manipulate people, then – or today.

While it helps to understand the left-right media divide, that alone isn’t enough.

The following video tonight is an introduction to critical – that means analytical – thinking. As the narrator explains, critical thought should not be confused with criticism.  While they’re selling a class in the last few seconds, a quick sound introduction to the principles of analytical thought are well laid out in under 2 ½ minutes.

MHProNews routinely uses the tools of critical thinking, which are part of the education of any clear thinker.  For example, attorneys and medical professionals alike are taught to search for the facts, and sift past emotions and smoke screens.

Given the problems of spin, weaponized reporting, biased, prejudiced, inaccurate news – and often emotionally charged, but rationally flawed opinion columns and talking heads – critical thought is important for professionals, business owners, investors, home owners, and all others.

While hopefully every column on MHProNews demonstrates analytical thought, and a search for the truth, an example is found in the related report below. The feedback from industry members on this hot topic has already made it clear that it resonates with a number of manufactured housing professionals.  Enjoy. ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)
