Put Taxpayer Funded Comments to Work for Your MH Location, Monday Morning Sales Meeting

It isn’t every day that a U.S. Senator tells America that he grew up in a “trailer park” [sic], and later bought a “mobile home.”

SICSicutJournalismDefintionSocietyProfessionalJournalismDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

And it isn’t every day that a world-famous brain surgeon tells America that manufactured homes are “amazing.”

Everyone in sales or marketing ought to understand the power of third party testimonials.  What some may – or may not – understand is that the testimonial doesn’t have to be specifically about your location or business.

The video below does both of those points. We posted this revised version of this video on YouTube, which you are hereby authorized to use so long as you don’t alter the video – which means that you can post it to your website.

The embed code your web developer needs is shown below.

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/BeHn7xxLnh8″ frameborder=”0″ allow=”autoplay; encrypted-media” allowfullscreen></iframe>

This is simple, and common sense. For maximum benefit, you’ll want to post it prominently on your website, and on social media.

Every major decision – and buying a manufactured home is a big one for most people – involves a ‘weighing process.’  There are the reasons to do something, and other factors that point to not making the same possible choice. It’s stating the obvious. With all of the negative media about MH, you want as much positive to be seen by your prospects.

A video like this could be one more reason to that might tip the scales in your favor. The taxpayers pay these gents salaries. Let those tax payer funded comments go to work for you. ## (News, business tips, analysis and commentary.)

Easter Sunday Morning Weekly Recap – Manufactured Housing Industry Headline News 3.25.2018 to 4.1.2018

April 1st, 2018 Comments off

HeLivesEasterSunday412018DailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The celebration of Easter comes around once a year, but Sunday is a weekly occurrence.

As one scans national news, millions with a cause, effect and solutions mindset are seeing the connection between social and political ills and a loss of the sacred in society.

It’s all about the truth, and acting upon the truth. As Dr Keith Ablow has observed, not following the truth has consequences. That applies to our industry and related issues, and to all of the other challenges in our world.

Manufactured Housing and the Truth

Manufactured housing is plagued by a simple yet complex issue. It could be summed up with what Pontius Pilate asked Jesus at trial on a “Friday paradoxically called Good.

What is truth?”

Jesus stood silently for that question from Pilate.  Millions of believers down through the centuries understood that the Christ is Truth Personified. His Real Presence spoke Truth.

Manufactured housing pros come from a full range of beliefs, including some agnostics and atheists.  But all should find the question of truth compelling.  Without truth, no substantial good can be achieved long term.  Engineers, builders, bankers, janitors and parents — numerous professions and vocations — rely upon objective reality – the truth – in order to properly their work.

The truth can make some uncomfortable at times. That’s normal, even useful. It’s called conscience.

Some want to pick and choose ‘their truth.’ It’s as old as the story of Adam and Eve, justifying breaking the one rule that they were given — don’t eat the fruit of that one tree.

What makes manufactured housing a compelling opportunity for buyers, sellers, and others involved in housing is that the value is real. The heart of our story is based upon the truth of the needs, and the truth of our product and services.

Homes don’t have to be perfect to be good, any more than a car, truck or SUV doesn’t have to be perfect to be useful, or a meal has to be perfect to give nutrition.

Next week or early the following, barring the unforeseen, the Daily Business News plans a first quarter of 2018 review of the state of the manufactured housing industry.

There is obviously good news in rising new home shipments. But we won’t sugar coat the fact that manufactured homes are still near historic lows.

To solve a problem, one needs to search for the cause, the effects, and then apply the truthful solution.

On this Easter Sunday, we thank God for the blessings of faith, flag, family and the good fortune that we are working with thousands of fine folks like you in a great and must needed industry, manufactured housing. With no further adieu, let’s dive into the headlines and links to the week that was.

HUD Secretary Ben Carson Tells Senators, Today’s Manufactured Homes “Amazing” Quality and Value

March 29th, 2018 Comments off

CSPANHUDSecretaryCarsonTellsSenatorsTodaysManufacturedHomesAmazingQualityValueDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews500

Senate oversight hearings are a mix of the serious and the staged. The same hearing that the video clip below is taken from, included clearly partisan moves designed to embarrass HUD Secretary Carson and the Trump Administration. That’s what drew the headlines in the mainstream media.

While some were talking about who did or said what on office furniture purchases, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) focused on affordable housing, and on how more Americans could be lifted out of poverty.

Tillis related the opportunities provided by manufactured homes as a ladder of opportunity to his own personal experiences as a youth and young adult.

In that context, Senator Tillis (R-NC) said in Senate oversight hearings last week that, “I don’t think most people recognize that the regulatory burden that we place on the citizens of the United States hit the poorest among us.”

A graphic in the video underscores that point made by Tillis.

Tillis asked Secretary Carson, “…what are you doing, it’s more of a blade level so you may not be able to answer the question specifically,” about regulatory streamlining and relief, with respect to the manufactured housing program?

Sec. Carson thanked Tillis for the question, and after stating some background data about the industry said, “If you look at the progress that’s been made in manufactured housing, it’s amazing.”

A lot of that [manufactured] housing you would not be able to distinguish from site built housing.  And yet the pricing is better,” Carson observed. U.S. Census Bureau data bears that statement out, with the savings over conventional housing about half the cost of ‘site building.’

The regulations are ridiculous,” Carson added.  He explained the regulatory freeze, and that HUD is doing a top-down review announced earlier this year.

While there was some phrasing that might have been more precise – perhaps due to the pressures of time constraints – the thrust of the comments by those featured in this video should be music to the industry’s ears.

If Carson and his team follow through on what these video comments indicated, it could mean that the onerous burdens created during the Pam Danner years at HUD may be reversed and improved.  If so, then as unnecessary costs and red tape are avoided, more buyers could qualify for their own home. ##  (News, analysis and commentary.)

“Winners and Losers,” L2 Founder, Prof Scott Galloway on Monopolies

March 28th, 2018 Comments off

ScottGallowayL2MonopoliesWinnersLosersDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The Daily Business News has been raising concerns about monopolies – notably those that impact manufactured housing – for some time.

Ultimately, as L2 Founder, and NY Stern Professor Scott Galloway explains, certain monopolies impact everyone.  For example, when Amazon puts companies out of business, that eliminates jobs.  Those employers and workers may have been possible consumers for our industry’s products.

What Galloway explains anew in this recent video is how important independent – small businesses – are to an economy.  And the underlying message is that the public, public officials and politicos should be doing something about it.  His example includes Amazon, which was our market focus tonight.  Keep in mind that Amazon sells container housing via its website.

DonaldJTrumpDailyBusinessNewsAmazonMHProNews

When one recognizes the impact of a few mega companies on all others in manufactured housing, those who aren’t with a giant should realize that the clock is ticking; and the mega-corps will be the winners, unless action is taken.

Which is why the Trump Administration, and people across the left-right political and media divide are increasingly tuned into the issue of regulating, or breaking up, the monopolies.

Ignore the trends at your peril.

Deep pocket investor?  There’s a different strategy for billion dollar hedge funds and other fearless billionaires to consider, which will be examined in an upcoming report.  The bloom isn’t going to fall of the tech rose, at least, not all at once.  What is going to be increasingly obvious is what an amazing opportunity manufactured housing is, for those with the proper long-term strategy.

State Agencies Probing Giant Equity Lifestyle Over Years of Alleged Senior Abuses at MH Community

March 27th, 2018 Comments off

StateInvestigatesSalesDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Several Oregon state agencies are investigating a manufactured home park for seniors in Eugene, amid complaints that it cheated some residents out of thousands of dollars,” says the Associated Press (AP).

The Register-Guard reports that those investigating the Falcon Wood Village park [sic] include the Department of Justice and the Department of Consumer and Business Services,” per KTVZ.

SICSicutJournalismDefintionSocietyProfessionalJournalismDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The Oregon-based Register-Guard newspaper states that it has identified five cases from 2010 to 2013 in which residents agreed to allow the ELS owned community, Falcon Wood Village, to sell their homes for them.  But upon sale of the homes, only a small fraction of the ultimate selling price was allegedly paid to the seller.

FalconWoodVillageELSPropertiesMyMHCommunityDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Local media photos include those like the one at the top of this post, while other views of the same ELS owned community include appealing photos like the one shown immediately above.

The claims by residents include that they were in difficult financial straits when they agreed to the sales.

After an internal audit, the Chicago-based Equity Lifestyle Properties, fired its regional manager Jeff Wehrung in Oregon in January, per AP, but the Register-Guard says it is unclear if Wehrung quit voluntarily or was terminated.

ELS says it’s cooperating with investigators.

Because of pending legal claims, the various parties involved are making only limited statements about the matter, summarized by the above.

ELS is a publicly traded company, and one of the largest operators of land-lease communities in the manufactured housing industry. The closing numbers for their stock last night are found in the report linked here.  ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

“Sabotaging everything the country stands for” says Innovative Production Pioneer

March 26th, 2018 Comments off

JeffBridgesMovieTuckerManandHisDreamDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Historic flashbacks can be instructive, including examples from outside one’s own industry or profession that may provide inspiration and insight.

The challenge of dominating, monopolistic forces using (…or abusing…) political forces is not new.  It’s been going on since the dawn of recorded history.  The example below is a classic American tale of the little guy who is taking on the giants of his industry and era.

The movie Tucker, a Lucas Film with Jeff Bridges in the title role, reflects the efforts of an automotive pioneer.

According to “New York magazine, Tucker: The Man And His Dream is “as fast, sleek and streamlined as the car – the Tucker Torpedo, that Preston Tucker built in 1948.” And filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas celebrate Preston Tucker as the ultimate believer in the American dream,” says the Tucker YouTube page.

In a dazzling portrayal by Jeff Bridges, Tucker is a dynamic engineer and an enthusiastic showman who envisions the car of the future. Against mighty odds he manages to build a fleet of them – only to have his factory shut down by Detroit’s Big Three automobile manufacturers. They took away his car – but nobody could take away his dream.”

Tucker plans and produces a superior product, one that the Big Automakers seek to undermine in various ways. Among them are the use of monopolistic levers, including an abuse of government power.  In his days, the majority wanted a new car post-war.

Today, while automobiles are still very much in demand, most aspire to have a home of their own.

The abuses alleged against Facebook, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, or Berkshire Hathaway – to name but a few in our own time – should make thoughtful professionals step back and ask, what would the factory-built home industry be like in the absence of oppressive economic power?

Preston Tucker’s story is history.  Our housing industry’s story is still being written. The headline quote is from the movie.

A Connection Between Tucker and Factory Built Housing?

After World War II, when it was necessary to provide affordable housing for returning veterans, Carl Strandlund, who was vice president and general manager of Chicago Vitreous Enamel Product Co., went to Washington, D.C., to request steel to build gas stations in Indiana. However, the federal government, which regulated steel use to private industry, was more interested in producing housing…” wrote Andrea Halgrimson, in 2005.

Strandlund got a government loan to manufacture the homes and founded the Lustron Corp. The Chicago plant chosen by Strandlund was leased to the Tucker Motor Co. and although the building had been promised to Lustron, the Tucker people would not share the space. So the federal government leased an aircraft plant in Columbus, Ohio, to Strandlund. There, about 2,500 Lustron homes were produced in 1949 and 1950.”

Historic Lustron PreFab Homes Draw Renewed Interest

The question of monopolistic is a question both political parties, and voices across the left-right media spectrum, are grappling with today.  The issues of how government touches industry, and vice versa are also alive and well in the automotive, as well as the factory built housing professions.  ## (Historic flashback, inspirational, commentary, and analysis.)

“Razzle Dazzle,” Says Former Manufactured Housing Institute Member

March 26th, 2018 Comments off

RazzleDazzleManufacturedHousingInstituteMHILogoNewClassofHomesDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsOnce you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” – Arthur Conan Doyle, per BrainyQuote.

An attendee of multiple MHI events who is an award-winning corporate leader who is also a Daily Business News reader explained what he called their “razzle dazzle.”

He specifically pointed out the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) trade association’s plans, naming their proposed “new class of homes.”

What has this extended MHI research and discussion actually accomplished?” – he rhetorically asked.

America’s affordable housing crisis is growing, yet MHI is still busy talking.”

Research may look like action, he said, but practically speaking, it is just another delay while the industry’s largest players continue to “consolidate” smaller ones

There is no denying that manufactured home production, retail, and communities continues to be absorbed into the hands of the larger MHI member companies. MHI’s own data – as well as third party research – confirms it.  Is that an accident? Coincidence? Or is it their plan?

ManufacturedHomesMarketShareMHIMembersClaytonCavcoChampionDaiyBusinessNewsMHProNews

If the proposed Skyline Champion deals is finalized, then 75 percent of the industry’s production will be in the hands of only 3 companies, all of which are MHI members, per data from MHI, and other sources.

It’s Razzle Dazzle.”

Another skeptical executive told the Daily Business News that it takes skill for MHI to be so wrong, or so late to the dance, so often.  to those MHI defenders who say it is only a ‘conspiracy theory,’ he pointed to numerous reports from inside and out of the factory-built home industry,  and then cited the opening Arthur Conan Doyle quote, used at the top.

When

  • the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) and the National Association of Realtors (NAR) are both saying that only more construction will ease the affordable housing crisis,
  • and MHI has demonstrably done nothing effective,
  • that requires arrogance, incompetence – or is it great skill?

In the wake of a recent Daily Business News report, some ask, is failure to advance the industry being rewarded through higher pay and bonuses to senior MHI staff? If that’s hard to imagine, then see the related MHI produced facts that prove that senior staff are getting more pay – plus “bonuses” – per MHI’s own reports; see that “Busted!” linked in the related resource reports, further below.

Given the various controversial allegations, trends, and mounting evidence against them and their dominant member – Clayton Homes and their Berkshire Hathaway sister operations – it’s understandable that a number of state associations that could, quit MHI. See that and other related evidence in the related reports, linked below.

MHI’s counting the number of potential readers their advertorials might have reached is pathetic, when you realize it only proves how ineffective their work actually is,” said an industry executive.

ManufacturedHousingInstituteMHILogo2017SnapshotFactchecksDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews-1-768x711

MHI doesn’t prove they reached 83 million Americans, but even if that claim was true, doesn’t their own facts – upon careful consideration – only reveal how ineffective their work actually is? Some 92,900 new HUD Code homes were shipped in 2017, divided by 83 million MHI claimed = .0011192771, or about 1/10 of 1 percent. Furthermore, tens of thousands of new HUD Code manufactured home sales were already taking place, which means their claimed impact was even weaker than 1/10 of 1 percent. http://www.mhpronews.com/blogs/daily-business-news/we-want-your-money-2018-mhi-membership-infographic-fact-check/

Another pro told MHProNews that the huge claims MHI makes about their advertorials, social media and videos are either a fig leaf designed to make themselves look good, or are actually more evidence of their years of failure to advance their own stated agenda, take your pick.  See the graphic and fact-check above, using their own numbers.

There is in America today:

  • a 300,000 to 400,000 new unit annual new home production shortage,
  • the greatest need is in the affordable housing categories – facts according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB),
  • plus NAR and the National Low Income Housing Coalition NLIHC) have reported an 8.3 million units affordable housing units needed.

4 Concerns of Homebuilders Have Impacting Every American

What those facts imply is that it would take over a decade of producing record numbers of new manufactured homes to catch up to what America needs.

ManufacturedHomeShipmentTrendsPercentageNewHomeStartsSkylineChampionPowerPointMastheadBlogDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Using MHI and their members own data demonstrates that their so-called leadership in the past decade has witnessed the lowest levels of manufactured home production in the industry’s history. Why would a thinking person follow such failed leadership?

When you look at the facts, isn’t it obvious why Harvard researcher Eric Belsky predicted manufactured housing would dominate?

MultipleReasonsExpectManufacturedHousingDoBetterThanSiteBuiltHousingEricBelskyEecDirJointCenterHousingStudiesHarvardUnivDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

At the time Belsky made this prediction, manufactured homes were selling over 250,000 new units per year. Yet in 2017, new home production was ‘back up to” only some 92,900 new home sales. In 2002, MHI was citing Belksy, why did they stop doing so after Clayton become their dominant member/producer?

Admissions and Excuses by Key MHI Professionals

Fancy power points and snazzy graphics – when carefully fact-checked against results – demonstrates a failure to be proactive that MHI member and former chairman, Nathan Smith himself stated.

MHI President Richard “Dick” Jennison argued for low production, why? Didn’t that just benefit the bigger companies that have bought out smaller ones at a bargain price?

The statements by past or current members of MHI are often blistering.  They’ve included, but aren’t limited to:

Smoke and mirrors,”
Ineffective,”
Illogical,” and most recently:
Razzle dazzle…

…call it what you will. The controversial report last week alleging Clayton is trying to kill off the Tunica Show is only the latest in a series that has a growing number of professionals saying, if there is smoke, there must be fire.

A full-scale trade show includes model homes on display from HUD Code, modular, ANSI and other factory built producers, along with exhibits, and seminars.

The Tunica Manufactured Housing Show for 2018 is in the rearview mirror.  Now that it is, there’s quite a bit of information to unpack, and report on for industry professionals.

Some of those reports have already been published, in the links below, along with other news that the links below will recap.

“Resistance Isn’t Futile”

There are millions of sci-fi fans, some of whom will recall Star Trek and the evil empire of the Borg.  The Borg are fictional cybernetic organisms, part machine, part organic sentient life – such as humans. The Borg were a collective, that forced all in their path to join.  The Borg did not permit independent thought or action.

The Borg were seemingly unstoppable. Their mantra was “Resistance is futile.” Don’t even bother trying.

Today, in manufactured housing – and in other industries too – a few giant companies are dominating to an extent that it raises questions about the harmful impact on creativity, consumers, and other businesses.  From sources as far left as the Nation to as far right as Breitbart, there are voices calling for a regulation – or a breakup – of specific monopolistic corporate giants.

The Nation spotlighted Buffett, and named Clayton, but congressional represenatives and federal officers are also among those checking into similar concerns.

For the just concluded Tunica Show, reports that Clayton Homes is allegedly trying to kill of the show have stirred up independent-minded professionals. Two reports linked below today are related to that topic.

Warren Buffett plainly says that reading and research are part of what has made him successful.  Buffett’s very interested in history, and believes most others aren’t. These are advantages to Buffett and his brands, including Berkshire Hathaway owned companies deeply involved in manufactured housing.

Buffett takes a long view, and preaches that to his people, as he’s said, and as Kevin Clayton has confirmed.

Some believe that Clayton and Buffett are – like the Borg – unstoppable.

But industry pros who recall the late 1990s may remember that Fleetwood and Champion were once thought to be unstoppable too.

Do your own homework.  Ask yourself, why Clayton, MHI et al haven’t refuted the concerns and allegations raised by a growing number of sources inside and outside of manufactured housing.

Then based upon a deep understanding, prepare and act accordingly. MHProNews and others are proof that “resistance isn’t futile.”
