She said, “California and Arizona have rebounded nicely since the recession, and could drive continued growth in the manufactured home segment.”

When asked what she thought were emerging risks in the insurance industry, Alaniz mentioned smart technology, tiny homes and green building materials, as MHProNews understands. ##

New Home Sales Spike; Pending and Existing Home Sales also Rise

May 27th, 2016 Comments off

housing_recovery__globest.com__creditPending home sales rose for the third consecutive month in April, this time hitting the highest level since Feb. 2006, as 12newsnow reports to MHProNews. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) said its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index billowed 5.1 percent in April to 116.3, just shy of the 117.4 level ten years ago.

In the latest of good news for the improving housing market, pending home sales are up 4.6 percent over April 2015. In another good stroke, the Commerce Department reported new home sales spiked 16.6 percent last month to a seasonally annual average rate (SAAR) of 619,000, the most since Jan. 2008.

Comprising 90 percent of the market, existing homes sales rose last month to an annual rate of 5.45 million.

NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun attributed the increases to mortgage rates that continue to hover below four percent, and job growth that proffers the confidence and money to buy homes. ##

Manufactured Housing Institute’s National Congress and Expo for Manufactured and Modular Housing

May 26th, 2016 Comments off

arizona__dolce_vita_mhc__otside_Phoenix__naplesnews_Laurel_SmithFrom naplesnews, MHProNews has learned Fort Myers, Fla.-based Murex Properties won the 2016 Community of the Year award, Western Region for its Dolce Vita manufactured home community (MHC) east of Phoenix. The annual honor was bestowed upon Murex at the Manufactured Housing Institute’s National Congress and Expo for Manufactured and Modular Housing held in Las Vegas recently.

The age-restricted, gated community–lavish compared to most MHCs—has a 33,000 square foot, Mediterranean-style clubhouse with everything from a billiards room to a ballroom, a movie theatre, fitness center and computer room.

Outside is seven acres of activity including a 3,000 square foot heated swimming pool, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, shuffleboard, bocce ball, horseshoes and a putting green.

Dolce Vita will accommodate 720 home sites but currently has 360 households who enjoy the breathtaking view of Superstitious Mountain. The community was included in last year’s Where to Retire’s short list of the nation’s best master-planned communities.

Murex operates eight communities in Arizona, Florida, Oregon and Texas, and since 2011 has collaborated with Northwestern Mutual on four age-restricted communities. Northwestern Mutual is an AAA-rated company with over $200 billion in investments. ##

Spanish Modular Units Housing Refugees from Middle East and African Conflicts

September 15th, 2015 Comments off

Spanish_Surricatta_Systems--modular_refugee_housing__dezeen__creditMHProNews has learned from dezeen the Shelter Unit for Rapid Installation (SURI) was originally designed to provide modular housing after earthquakes, but is now being used to house the millions fleeing conflicts in the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

Developed by Spain’s Surricatta Systems, additional units can be added to make a much larger space. The advantage of SURI is that this is a modular system that can be assembled to create a variety of facilities from family dwellings to primary healthcare centres,” said Pedro Sáez, director of Urbana de Exteriores, the parent company of Suricatta Systems. It is also ideal for emergency field hospitals or mobile operating theatres in advance positions. As the system can be connected in multiple directions it allows for the creation of virtually any type of temporary building,” he added.

Composed of a lightweight framework surrounded by multiple layers of DuPont Tyvek – a UV-resistant breathable membrane used in construction—the exterior has pockets that can be filled with available materials, such as dirt or sand, that adds stability and insulation.

A rooftop cachement system collects rainwater and filters it into potable water; interior levels of light are controlled by adjustable apertures. Solar panels provide electricity to the modular structure, and the walls are treated to protect residents against mosquitoes.

Claiming SURI has a ten-year lifespan, Surricatta says all the materials are either recyclable or biodegradable. ##

Study Enforces UK Need for Modular Homes

July 6th, 2015 Comments off

modular geat britain jim coldwell hull daily mailA study by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME) in Great Britain reiterates the need for 250,000 new homes each year for the next decade, as MHProNews reported July 2, 2015 instead of the 120,000 new units currently being produced, according to telegraph.co.uk.

IME suggests modular homes would ease the housing crunch, because, similarly to the U. S., housing prices are beyond the reach of many first-time homeowners. Dr. Tim Fox, who authored the study, suggests the government offer incentives to build off-site housing. Noting it is faster and more environmentally friendly, he says modular homes use fewer resources to build than a typical bricks and mortar home and is also more energy efficient once completed.

Adding that the technology in building off-site has advanced well beyond the systems-built homes of the 1960s and 70s, Fox said the homes are less expensive and could expand the country’s manufacturing and skills base. The UK is in the middle of an acute housing crisis. The Government needs to demonstrate real ambition, leadership and innovation, not make small piecemeal changes, if it is going to solve the UK’s housing crisis. Overhauling the way the UK constructs homes could be the quickest and most effective way of doing this. ##

Upscale Modular Home is Top Prize in Lottery

May 8th, 2015 1 comment

pac_national_exhibition_prize_homeKaroleena, an Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada modular home builder, has been selected to build the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) show’s prize home, according to infotel.ca. The 3,800 square-foot, $2.1 million dollar modular home took six months to build and 30 days to assemble on-site. It will be trucked to the show in Vancouver.

Consisting of a series of modules built 12′ 6″ high and 16′ wide, Karoleena’s home features steel-framed construction, spray foam insulation and two-by-fours laid side by side for the roof construction. Co-founder Kris Goodjohn said, This will be huge for us. Vancouver is our target marketplace because it’s a higher end price point we’re in, and Vancouver’s definitely that market for us.

Modular housing builder Britco of Langley, British Columbia has supplied the prize home in the past, but they generally do not build residential. As MHProNews reported March 6, 2014, Britco supplied modular housing for athletes during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and will supply housing for the Canada Winter Games in east central BC later this year.

The prize home is the culmination and grand prize of a series of lottery drawings that offer vacations, cars and the modular home. The winner will be selected Sept. 10 at a drawing at the Exhibition building. Proceeds from the sale of tickets benefit a variety of communities in Canada. ##
