Louisville Show is Approaching a Sell-Out

2014-louisville-manufactured-housing-show-crowd-photo-credits-mhpronews-manufacturedhomes-com-There are almost 6 months to go before the start of the 2015 Louisville Manufactured Housing Show, and booth space and manufacturers exhibit space is approaching a sell out.  MHProNews has learned there will be 2 new factory builders planning for the 2015 event, and apparently all the current manufactured and modular builders are expected to return.

Registration for the 2015 show opens on October 1, 2014.  Dennis Hill of Show Ways Unlimited suggests it’s wise to mark your calendars now for the 2015 show.

“Louisville has been the best attended industry event 2 years in a row.” Dennis Hill said.  “As videos from attendees in 2014 posted on our updated show website underscore, the enthusiasm and value for attending the show has not been better in a decade. Our popular Business Building Seminars will be back, and because they were often standing room only in 2014, we’ve expanded the seminar space.  The full seminar line up will be available this fall.”

Show Chairman Ron Thomas Sr. had only this to say, “It’s the best way to start off your new year. Don’t miss it!” ##

NBC News Today Show report shows Manufactured Home did as well as Conventional On-site Construction in hurricane high winds test

homes-vs-hurricane12-winds-test-credit=nbc-today-show-posted-mastheadblog-mhpronews-com-Regarding this previous portion of the test, IBHS indicated: “When one of these high wind-rated HUD-Code homes is installed on a permanent foundation, in most of the country, it would end up resisting wind storms better than surrounding site-built homes.”

So stated a MHI President and CEO, Richard “Dick” Jennison in a longer report to MHProNews. While part of the test was to show how superior a Wind Zone III home is to a standard HUD Code manufactured home in durability, Jennison said: the director of the IBHS (Julie Rochman, President) told the crowd how impressed she was at the performance of the Zone I home itself.”

HUD’s Pam Danner shines at elegant Alexander Hotel in Indianapolis amid Optimistic 2014 Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) Summer Meeting

The new manufactured home program director at HUD, Pam Danner, was featured on the final day, in addition to her participating in numerous technical, regulatory and other discussions with industry members.

Danner, an attorney with prior federal and factory-built home industry experience, was applauded numerous times for her statements assuring industry leaders that some of the program backlog caused by the vacancy in the program she filled was being addressed.

The changes Danner spoke about ranged from the symbolic – hanging new framed photos of manufactured homes in their offices – to addressing delayed regulatory issues, to assuring the industry that she would strive to see manufactured housing be increasingly included in HUD’s programs.

The periodic applause from attendees was genuine, rather than polite. Comments from attendees were positive and encouraged at what has already taken place during Danner’s first 10 weeks at HUD. ##

George Allen Fact Check: 6 Errors/Contradictions in one section alone (290/1)?

Caesar-Palace-main-fountain-at-night-in-Las Vegas-NV-WikiCommons-posted-on-mhpronews-comThe Washington Post famously hands out “Pinocchios” for false or misleading statements made by public officials they fact check, including notables such as U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other foreign or domestic public figures.

Since the MHIndustry’s George F. Allen boldly proclaims himself weekly to be a “reporter” and “communications resource,” let’s see in just one of the three parts (not counting his standard introduction, or “end notes”) in his recent post how many errors or contradictions this alleged “reporter” makes.

1) The first error/contradiction is found in the very first sentence in George F. Allen’s blog post (#290, section I); which is a typo of one of his own publication’s name.

2) When George Allen wrote;

“…NEVER EVER ENGAGE IN PUBLIC BACKSTABBING of MHBusiness associates online or anywhere else!”

…does Allen realize he violated that principle in that very paragraph, in his own blasting of the Manufactured Housing Institute’s (MHI’s) popular Congress and Expo? Is it ‘Do as I say, not as I do?’ for Allen in Indy? Does Allen hold himself and his friends to this standard, or not?

3) The early bird special for Congress and Expo runs through Friday, April 4, so Allen has 2 fact errors in his second bullet point, and once more violates his own stated principle of “…NEVER EVER ENGAGE IN PUBLIC BACKSTABBING of MHBusiness associates online or anywhere else!” As a side note, when has MHI ever attacked Allen’s so-called Roundtable or other “meetings” publicly?

4) Allen’s paragraph five states registrations for MHI’s Congress and Expo in 2014 “…are up 30 percent over last year!” An MHProNews source at MHI puts that at up 39% increase over last year, as of 3PM ET, 3/31/2014. Doesn’t that fact-error contradict his bullet point 3, which boldly claims his location has become “the hub…” “…of 1) research, 2) resources, 3) communication, 4) networking, 5) deal-making, 6) PM training & certification, and when need be, 7) national advocacy…” What Allen himself has said in a prior blog post, that he agitatesagainst MHI seems accurate. If MHProNews grades errors and contradictions on the curve, that would be a sixth fact/contradiction error. But if you look at the fact that accurate research, business building resources, more (…and more accurate…) communications, some 5 times more networking at the Congress and Expo event alone, true testing and certification through MHEI’s ACM (Accredited Community Manager), those first 6 claims are all errors/contradicted, because he is clearly not “…the hub…” based solely on Allen’s own missive. As to Allen point 7), when has Allen last engaged in “national advocacy” on an issue with Congress, the CFPB, HUD or other Washington based regulatory agency? Should that self-proclaimed “reporter” get a total 6 or 13 fact errors/contradictions for that one section of his blog? Does the Scripture-quoting Allen recall Exodus 20:16?

With so many obvious errors in just section “I” of a single Allen post – a pattern of errors which allegedly occurs routinely with this self-described “reporter” and “community-investor” – is it any wonder that the New York Times has not called George Allen to have a reporter spend a week in his “land lease life style community?”

MHARR’s HUD/MHI Missive: on the record, “No Comment,” but off the record…

The timing seemed odd, observers told MHProNews, as this took place in the immediate aftermath of an extraordinary semiannual oversight hearing on Capitol Hill. Chairman Jeb Hensarling’s Financial Services Committee had members from both parties peppering Richard Cordray with questions on the handling of manufactured housing regulations by the CFPB.

MHProNews outreaches to MHARR and MHI officials alike drew no reply (MHARR’s DC office) and no comment (MHI’s office).  But off the record statements have come in from a variety of sources, including those close to both of the manufactured housing industry’s national associations, state association leaders and other professionals in the industry.

One neutral source said off the record, “I agree with each of Danny’s comments about HUD.  I disagree about lack of progress or losing ground.”

A source close to MHI said, we …”have much bigger battles to fight than engaging in a war of words with someone who hasn’t accomplished anything for our industry since the passage of (the) Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000,” a reference to Danny Ghorbani, President at MHARR.

One MHARR source told us they agreed with every aspect of the MHARR release.

However, while some echoed that, other members in the MHARR camp are split on the release’s attack on MHI, and some related strategic and tactical issues. Some see the Darius “Danny” Ghorbani led group as acting properly, while others see MHARR’s president as being dead right on issues, but wrong on engagement methods with MHI, and often tactically mistaken in dealing with regulators.

Or as one MHARR member said when asked about the division in their ranks on tactics, timing and wording, “obviously, we are a varied group at MHARR.”

A veteran of DC and industry issues told MHProNews, “…note the wide-spread, bi-partisan support for the industry at the (Financial Services Committee) hearing. And, more importantly…such a broad and loud outcry (at the recent Financial Services Hearing with CFPB’s ) doesn’t happen organically, but as the result of a strategic (and) successful lobbying effort on behalf of…” state associations and MHI.

Indeed, in a video MHProNews plans to feature in the near term, 10 members of the committee raise concerns with Cordray, including the ranking Democrat, Maxine Waters (D-CA). Others included, Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-TN), Reps. Spencer Bachus (R-AL), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Bill Clay (D-MO), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Greg Meeks (D-NY), Steve Pearce (R-NM) and Terri Sewell (D-AL).

“What is certain is that manufactured housing has not had this level of momentum on Capitol Hill in at least 6 years, if not longer.” another source told us.  “MHI and the aligned states (associations) have done a lot of good work, in a tough political environment.  Anyone who knows politics and lobbying knows that it takes time to get things done, especially when you don’t have tons of money to throw at lobbying. Danny’s (Ghorbani) disappointed that MHARR working with MHI for a year has not shown huge results? Excuse me? What can he point to of substance that he achieved in the last few years? Things are tough in DC! Danny’s timing looks short sighted, or worse, in the light of the facts and history.”

Will the MHARR release slow momentum in DC or on the Hill? “Unlikely.” said one when asked. “The states and MHI have some real traction at this point. Danny’s broadside won’t harm MHI, the states, perhaps not anyone but Danny himself. Some will be glad he did it, because they share Danny’s frustrations with HUD.  But is this the way to get real change done? There is a real difference of opinion within the ranks of MHARR, (whose members) often agree with Danny on policy and goals, but not always agree on his style or timing.”

MHProNews will monitor the topic, as sources aligned with MHARR tell us that a concerted ‘tag team’ effort to use the MHARR release will be made by a handful of disgruntled MHI members in the days ahead.

Sam Zell says, Open the Kimono

sam-zell-nareit-reitworld-2013-lunch-speaker-credit-globest-posted-daily-business-news- (1)Sam Zell told the REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) Industry in San Francisco, “Open Kimono, total transparency.” That was the key to success for REITs, said the chairman of Equity Lifestyle Properties (ELS), Equity Group Investments (EGI) and Equity Residential (EQR). Zell said that when the government passed the original REIT Act, the purpose was to create an opportunity for the “little old lady of Pasadena” to be able to invest and own a piece of America’s commercial real estate. “The whole concept that we were wrestling with in 1993 was how we could fulfill that objective.” globest tells MHProNews. “If you believe that the US position as a reserve currency is very important, than you have a leadership responsibility to take steps to protect it and I don’t think it is happening, and the risk is huge.” words that echoed our earlier report, “Our Way of Life is Very Much Threatened.” Zell add that “Every time the Government interferes and try to deter the rules of economics, it doesn’t work.”

Land Lease Community Donates to United Way

Manufactured Housing Community Lake Erie MHP, LLC in Fredonia, New York is donating $250 to the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County for each home sold in its community, and presented the organization with a check for $1,000. The former McClenathan’s Mobile Home Park in Fredonia, in far western NY state with 159 homesites, is now owned by Lake Erie MHP which has carried out extensive upgrades in the community this year. According to observertoday, partner Scott Gladstone says, “We have worked with United Ways in other communities and look forward to working with the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County.” MHPronews has learned Lake Erie MHP is one of 11 land lease communities owned by Freehold Real Estate Management of Gales Ferry, Connecticut, a private real estate investment group with manufactured housing communities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.
