Longtime readers of MHProNews know that we’ve published more than one article that cast concerns about billionaire George Soros.  That disclaimer noted, this is one of those classic cases of the need to separate the wheat from the chaff with all people, organizations, and things.  There is good, bad, and meh to be found in all people and things.  Because what follows comes with a tip of the hat to the Soros-funded “Open Secrets” platform. Why? Because it is data – not opinion – driven.

Per Open Secrets Center for Responsive Politics, the following is based upon the data obtained by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) data released on February 01, 2019.

Our concerns about the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) are likewise well know to longtime, attentive readers.

Let’s note that MHProNews recognizes the right within the scope of the law and ethics of the MHI PAC to contribute to whomever.

Let’s further state that this pro-industry, pro-consumer, pro-growth industry trade platform similarly recognizes the right of individuals to do the same, within the framework of those same ethical and legal limits.

MHI is widely seen as being in the sway of a relatively small group of ‘big boy’ corporations.  Chief among those is Warren Buffett led Berkshire Hathaway.  Berkshire’s brands in MHVille include, but are not limited to, Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage Corp, and Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance.

See the related reports below for more insights on those operations.

Was Manufactured Housing Advocate Congressman Andy Barr Backstabbed?

October 15th, 2018 Comments off

 CongressmanRepAndyBarrKY6-R-ManufacturedHousingAdvocateDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews600

Congressman Andy Barr has carried water for the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) for several years.

MHI has justifiably called him a “champion” for the industry.

CongressmanAndyBarrManufacuredHousingActPassesHouseDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The screen capture reveals just one of the bills he helped get done for MHI indicates, he’s delivered for them and for the industry.

Let these first two videos of Congressman Barr speak for themselves.  Wouldn’t it be great if every law maker felt this way?

MHLivingNews, spotlighted his efforts more than once on behalf of manufactured home owners, prospective buyers, and the industry itself. One such example is linked below.

Congressman Andy Barr Speaks in Favor of Manufactured Housing, While Industry Controversies Brew

MHI’s PAC understandably gave Congressman Barr campaign contributions. Rep. Barr got his part of the job done, time-after-time.

So where is their backstabbing involved?

Big League Politics

Barr’s KY 6 is considered a swing district for a possible Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives. Amy McGrath, a left-leaning Democrat and combat veteran is getting pools of money from outside of this district.

Bluntly, Democrats have targeted Barr for elimination. Kentucky Democrat Nathan Smith is not far away, sources suggest to MHProNews, working the system…

Giving to Both Sides…

As political savants know, there are those who give to both major party candidates in a race.  Sometimes those donations come directly.  But sometimes, they are oblique. That can be legal.

The Drudge Report recently highlighted a story by the Hollywood Reporter, which said that 99 percent of Hollywood executives give their campaign contributions to Democrats. MHProNews spotlighted recently that 7 of the top 10 billionaires in the U.S. are Democratic supporters.  That includes Warren Buffett, who’s Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate owns Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage, and numerous other companies involved in manufactured housing.

So, it must be noted that MHI is dominated by Warren Buffett led Berkshire Hathaway. Voices inside and outside of the industry have made that observation.  It’s no secret.  A Berkshire Hathaway executive, sometimes two, have sat on the MHI executive committee for years.

Berkshire’s chairman routinely supports progressive, left-leaning, Democratic candidates.

Buffett’s mega-billionaire buddies, along with second tier billionaires like George Soros and Tom Steyer,  are doing the same. ICYMI, see the related reports, further below for facts and figures on this specific point.  That isn’t conjecture, it is documented reality.

So why is Congressman Barr – who did what Buffett’s Clayton, 21st, MHI et al wanted – suddenly facing a massive amount of campaign contributions from leftist groups?

Before you answer that question for yourself, consider the related question.

Isn’t what is happening to Barr a warning to all who may think today, ‘but I’ve been loyal to:’

  • Clayton Homes,
  • 21st,
  • MHI, etc.

because as soon as your usefulness is deemed over, you too could be discarded like a wet rag?

That’s not mere conjecture.

Bear in mind, that MHProNews has heard directly from those that did business with Clayton for years. Some even did high volume for Clayton. But when they did something that Clayton didn’t like, those sources tell us that Clayton turned on them and targeted them for elimination.

President Trump on the Stump for Rep. Andy Barr

By contrast, President Donald J. Trump campaigned with and for Andy Barr.  As a business man, the president understands the concept of loyalty.  Note too, if you watch the entire video, that the president – who is painted by his opponents as vindictive and petty – praises Senator McConnell, who he has on several occasions crossed swords with.  Can you detect any of that in this video?

But let’s return our focus back to Congressman Barr.

I’ve met Congressman Andy Barr in person. He described first-hand experiences with pre-HUD Code mobile homes, as well as with post-HUD Code manufactured homes. He seems well informed on our industry’s issues. He struck me as a genuinely good, sincere man. This is precisely the type of person whom the industry needs backing manufactured housing, from both sides of the political aisle,” said L. A. “Tony’ Kovach, publisher of MHProNews.

LATonyKovachGoodBipartisanshipShouldalwaysBepredicatedBenefitallhonestindustrymembersnotslectfewquote

The comment above was said with respect to another recent topic, but relates to this issue too.

A Distinction

There are plenty of rank and file Democrats who are nice people, well meaning, intelligent, caring, etc.

But there are examples of Democratic leaders who behave in a ‘use them and don’t care if you later abuse them’ fashion. That can happen in other organizations and political parties too.

But here is a case of Congressman Barr, who has fought successfully for manufactured housing industry interests in Washington, D.C..  If the indicators and sources are correct, then the purported powers-that-be behind MHI are treating Barr very badly.

Barr certainly merits the votes and support of those in KY6, and beyond.  Bear in mind too that it is only with

Other people resist, but this president gets results,” said Congressman Barr (KY-6-R) at a POTUS Donald J. Trump Rally on his behalf in Richmond, KY. In The video below, Barr begins to speak at about 24:20, you can watch him take the stage a few moments before that timeframe.

Barr said he knew that candidate Trump would become president when he said “My opponent has a slogan…’I’m with her’…I have a different slogan, “I’m with you!

Also, present Saturday night were Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell (KY-R) and Senator Rand Paul (KY-R). The video below presented because it was part of the same event that Barr and POTUS Trump appeared at.  It is entitled by the source as “Rand Paul EXPLOSIVE Speech at Trump Rally in Richmond Kentucky – October 13, 2018.”

Was Manufactured Housing Advocate Congressman Andy Barr Backstabbed?

In the backdrop of all that Barr did for manufactured housing and others, do you think you can trust the billionaires on the left? Or can you trust their non-profit tools, like MHI?

Why not ask Congressman Andy Barr that question?

But Barr may be too much of a gentleman to say that there are backstabbers at work in manufactured housing. Whatever he might say, the turn of the voters is upon us.

The midterms are three weeks out, early voting is underway in several states. Keep Andy Barr in mind, and others like him when you vote. It was mostly the GOP who passed S. 2155. It was entirely the GOP that passed The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.  That’s this morning’s “News Through the Lens of Manufactured Homes, and Factory-Built Housing,” © where “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

You are entitled to your own opinion
but you are not entitled to your own facts.”

– Daniel Patrick Moynihan, per Wikipedia.

Erlanger, KY is across the Ohio River and near Cincinnati, Ohio. Fort Mitchell, KY is nearby too. So, it is no surprise when a successful business professional and highly-visibly Democratic supporter was covered in a profile by Cincinnati, which said as follows.

ErlangerKYFortMitchellKYCincinnatiOhioMapManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

After Nathan Smith was born, his parents brought him to a single-wide mobile home perched on the side of a mountain in southeastern Kentucky.”

If you check the dates, that dwelling would indeed have been a true pre-HUD Code mobile home.

Here is an extended quote from that same source.  The brown text for direct quotes are added by MHProNews.

Today, the 42-year-old Fort Mitchell resident sells, finances and insures manufactured homes in addition to managing manufactured home communities.

Smith has since leveraged his success in business to become one of the most effective and influential Democratic fundraisers in Kentucky.

For the last 10 or 12 years, Nathan has probably been the most energetic and committed political and financial backer of Democrats from Northern Kentucky,Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway said. He is an indefatigable supporter of Democrats.

Conway, also a Democrat, recalls campaigning in southeastern Kentucky when he heard he needed to meet Smiths parents in Bimble, a small community outside of Barbourville.

The next thing I knew, the car was pulling up a little road alongside a junkyard on the side of a hill,Conway said. I asked for Nathans father and a guy spit out his tobacco and said, You found him.’ ”

Smith has never forgotten the values he learned during his humble upbringing, Conway said.

Nathan has a big heart,Conway said. If he is supporting you, he doesnt just write you a check. He wants to get his friends behind you. He is one of the best in state at gathering support for you.”

Cincinnati is part of the USA Today group of media publications.  You can see below where they stand in the left-right media chart.

USATodayLeftRightMediaBiasChartSharylAttkissonDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews_001

As Sharyl Attkisson’s media bias infographic above reflects, USA Today leans left, or put differently, they are more pro-Democratic than Republican (GOP).  You can finish their article on Smith, at this link here.

Why This Nathan Smith Profile Now?

There are several reasons to bring up SSK’s Nathan Smith at this time. One is because he remains a mover and shaker at the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). Smith, MHI and MHI PAC are all busily trying to help shape the 2018 midterms.

ManufacturedHousingAssocRegulatoryReformJOINMHARRbani-200x200

Click here or the above to learn more, which is not connected to this report.

Smith has considerable ties to Warren Buffett led Berkshire Hathaway owned Clayton Homes, and 21st Mortgage Corp. See more in the related reports, linked further below.

As or more revealing, Smith has ties to former President Barack Obama, Secretary Hillary Clinton, and is an active, long-time Democratic supporter. Various key U.S. Senate, gubernatorial, and other races will be influenced by Smith’s campaign support.

Smith’s support has included, but is not limited to, Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Joe Donnelly (D-IN). According to federal filings, both Brown and Donnelly have reportedly received MHI PAC funds.

SSK’s leader is quoted by MHI as saying, The Manufactured Housing Institute Political Action Committee (MHI-PAC) is the only federally-registered PAC dedicated to supporting bipartisan federal candidates who support manufactured and modular housing as an essential homeownership option.  MHI-PAC allows MHI members from every segment of the industry to pool permissible, voluntary personal financial contributions to support federal candidates for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. Thank you to all MHI-PAC contributors who are advancing our industrys dedication to providing affordable, quality homes and financing to all families.”

— Nathan Smith, Chairman of the MHI-PAC and Partner at SSK Communities

That’s an interesting commentary by Smith. Weren’t Democrats the party that passed Dodd-Frank, that throttled manufactured housing lending for years?  Didn’t Democrats pass ObamaCare, which laid heavy burdens on small businesses, and kept millions of workers from having a single, fulltime, living-wage jobs?

NathanSmithPhotoSSKCommunitiesLogoClaytonHomes21stMortgageLogoBerkshireHathawayLogoBillClintonKevinClaytonPhotoWarrenBuffettHillaryClintonphotoMHProNews

How can MHI staff or the MHI Executive Committee board members look their members in the face, and still claim that they’ve worked to advance the interests of small businesses, or manufactured home industry lending?

Isn’t there ample evidence that the opposite is true? Recall the comment linked below from former MHI VP Jason Boehlert, who admitted in writing that with Barack Obama in the White House, the CFPB wouldn’t change their rules or regulations on industry lending?

2012 Election Results and Coming Lame Duck Session

Aren’t the disconnects between what MHI – and what some of their leaders, like Nathan Smith – say and do in stark contrast to what they posture and proclaim in their messages and meetings?

In fact, then President Obama threatened to veto MHI’s Preserving Access, had it passed.  These are among the reasons that facts, evidence and history all matter.

Donald Trump, Jr., son of President Donald J. Trump wrote a recent op-ed for Salem News where he named Senator Brown as an opponent to his father’s agenda. Instead, Trump Jr. said those who want to Make America Great Again (MAGA) should support, “…Congressman Jim Renacci is [a pro-Trump MAGA backer]which is why my father endorsed his candidacy for senator. Unlike Brown, Renacci is a successful businessman who knows what it takes to continue the momentum of the Trump agenda.”

According to federal records, MHI’s PAC has cut checks to members of both parties. Among them is Joe Donnelly (D-IN), who President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump is actively campaigning against.

In the tight battle for the U.S. Senate, several checks have been cut by MHI PAC to key Democrats.

Among them is Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who as MHProNews has reminded industry pros, was Secretary Hillary Clinton’s Democratic running mate for president against Donald J. Trump in 2016. See the photo collage, further above.

Nathan Smith is colorful, affable, and popular. He has given to members of both major parties. But his loyalty is to Democrats. He leads the MHI PAC. He and MHI are in key races arguably working against the interests of small- to midsize-businesses, which are being “consolidated” by Berkshire’s brands, and other ‘big boy’ people just like himself.

The short video in that screen capture above is the one that follows. It’s must viewing for anyone that wants to understand what is actually going on in the foreground and background of the manufactured housing industry’s politics and business climate. Note that in the video, Smith candidly admits MHIs numerous mistakes.

But what Smith said must be seen through the lens of these twin adages.

FollowThe MoneyPayMoreAttentionToWhatPeopleDothanwhatTheySaySpySea72MartyLavinYachtManufacturedHousingINdustryProMHProNews

It should be noted that the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) has no PAC, but they do engage in a nonpartisan manner. They are on record as supporting the Trump agenda of regulatory roll backs.

Meanwhile, MHI has postured and pivoted on a variety of issues, but they’ve in fact followed the lead of Buffett’s Berkshire brands in manufactured housing.

Executive Director DJ Pendleton’s office at the TMHA reports that their recently concluded annual meeting raised over $50,000 for the TMHA PAC fund. Sources state that MHI’s PAC fund raised about $32,000 at their just concluded annual meeting. TMHA thanked their board, members and presenters at their meeting for their strong showing. MHI PAC chairman, Rick Rand of Great Value Homes, thanked Clayton, Cavco, Champion and George Allen for their singular efforts, while expressing appreciation to all MHI members and staff who made their achievement possible. Pendleton said: “That’s $50,000 we can use during this interim time and into the 2013 session to further protect and advance your industry.” Rand said, “We did some good numbers. We are excited about that. It took a lot of work on a lot of people’s part.”

MHI Says MHI-PAC Fundraiser for Senator Snowe a Success

February 21st, 2011 Comments off

On Wednesday, February 16th, MHI-PAC hosted a fundraiser for Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME).  Senator Snowe sits on the Finance, Commerce and Small Business Committees and is a major Industry friend.  MHI extended particular thanks to Kevin Clayton, President of Clayton Homes, was among those who attended this successful fundraiser, which raised $16,000 for the Senator’s re-election campaign.
