Owners Report Increased Profits, Compensation, Expansion Plans

June 19th, 2018 Comments off

The Small Business Optimism Index increased in May to the second highest level in the NFIB survey’s 45-year history,” said the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) to the Daily Business News in a release. “The index rose to 107.8, a three-point gain, with small businesses reporting high numbers in several key areas including compensation, profits, and sales trends.”

Hundreds of manufactured housing firms are represented by the NFIB, as a source with the Washington, D.C. based organization told MHProNews in 2017.  All told, some 325,000 small businesses of all kinds are NFIB members.

Main Street optimism is on a stratospheric trajectory thanks to recent tax cuts and regulatory changes. For years, owners have continuously signaled that when taxes and regulations ease, earnings and employee compensation increase,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan.

The NFIB is celebrating 75 years serving as “the voice of small business.”

Their May 2018 report hit several records:

  • Compensation increases hit a 45-year high at a record net 35 percent.
  • Positive earnings trends reached a survey high at a net three percent.
  • Positive sales trends are at the highest level since 1995.
  • Expansion plans are the most robust in survey history.

Small business owners are continuing an 18-month streak of unprecedented optimism which is leading to more hiring and raising wages,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg.

While they continue to face challenges in hiring qualified workers, they now have more resources to commit to attracting candidates.”

Access to credit continues as a non-issue with 37 percent of owners reporting all credit needs were satisfied and 43 percent saying they were not interested in a loan, down seven points from last month and the lowest reading since 2007,” said NFIB. “Only one percent reported that financing was their top business problem. Owners planning to build inventories rose three points to a net four percent, the nineteenth positive reading in the past 20 months.”

NFIB was an important part of the coalition that supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Who Will Google and YouTube Silence Next?

April 18th, 2018 Comments off

Google and YouTube dominate internet search with over 75% of the market. If you disappear on Google, your ability to voice your opinion disappears too,” says PragerU’s YouTube video page entitled, “Who Will Google Silence Next?”

PragerU is far from alone in their concerns about the search engine giant.  In Europe, the EU slapped Google with a $2.7 billion dollar fine last year.

Late last year in the U.S., “The state of Missouri is gearing up for a legal battle with GoogleMissouri Attorney General Josh Hawley said Monday that his office is investigating the search giant over allegations that it violated the state’s various consumer-protection and antitrust laws,” per Fortune.

Google and YouTube are part of the marketing mix that is used routinely by manufactured housing professionals. On both the professional and the personal level, what Google and YouTube do is impactful.

The Daily Business News has periodically used Prager videos to make a point relevant for manufactured housing, and related economic or political issues.

PragerU is an educational non-profit that has had over 40 of their videos restricted by YouTube.

That’s why they say they have recently filed a lawsuit against the tech giant. This is not just about PragerU being silenced – it’s about the targeting of dissenting opinions.

Tomorrow it could be your point of view that is silenced,” Prager said.

The video starts with a quote from George Orwell’s classic, 1984. “Who controls the past controls the future who controls the present controls the past.” ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

“F-Bombs” Fly – Cursing Manufactured Housing and Tornadoes – Engaging Public, Experts, Officials, and Media

March 2nd, 2018 Comments off

When you seriously engage the public on the topic of manufactured homes, perhaps especially when it involves tornado safety, you better be thick skinned. The following are examples of real comments, from real people…

  • “Bull-sh-t!”
  • “Mother-f-cker!”
  • “Liar!”

…are just some of the hundreds of posted feedback received – which have overall been a mix of good, bad and meh.  You’ll see a few recent examples of online discussions with some pretty heated accusers.

One of the most popular manufactured home videos on YouTube is a very basic one created by MHProNews using original footage from a test conducted at Texas Tech University, with an “Air Guard” C-130 some years ago.

The video was our first stab at a ‘desktop’ production; and while it was okay for a first effort then, it clearly looks dated now.

That said, when you top 400,000 views on YouTube, that’s not bad. It is routinely at or near the top video in the search for manufactured homes and tornadoes on YouTube, as the still above illustrates.

It should be noted that we stick with the facts, and cite sources.  We don’t exaggerate.  Some viewers don’t read the subtext, or listen to the words in the video, and so they get a false impression.

Regardless, engaging with those who post comments is useful.

One may not convert the accuser, but there are thousands who see those comments, and they have the opportunity to follow the links to MHLivingNews, and learn more from our newer videos on MHLivingNews that are hosted on commercial-freeVimeo.

Take Aways, Lessons Learned

The lessons and takes ways after years of doing this are many.

Among them?

Anyone can say they are pro-industry.  For that matter, anyone can claim anything. It’s offering evidence, that’s what matters.

So for years on MHProNews and after we launched MHLivingNews, our operation has tried day-by-day to walk-the-talk.  As an industry CEO said, “You [MHProNews | MHLivingNews] have street cred.”

The industry’s professionals must grasp a simple reality. False or misleading claims must be debunked.

LATonyKovachPresenting%StateConvDeadwoodSDKenCorbinCommentManufacturedHousingIndustryEventDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsIt isn’t just our opinion, its a routine question asked during public presentations by Tony Kovach, which draws nearly universal agreement from industry professionals, at events like the one in the photo, above.

Image concerns, and fear of poor quality, or the false perception of low construction standards are among the items that must be routinely responded to by credible industry voices.

It isn’t a popularity contest. Anyone can ‘cheer lead.’

Authentically engaging others on thorny issues has made MHProNews | MHLivingNews the runaway number one trade media for many years.  We’ve never claimed perfection.  Tony admitted recently to having been mistaken on a key topic

So, as former MHI Chairman, and 21st Mortgage Corp President and CEO Tim Williams said on-the-record, if we have a fact error, we correct it.

To see Tim Williams’ full statement in context, click the link below.

‘Shots Fired’ by Col George Allen, and the WHA’s Amy Bliss

In an upcoming report, blogger and award winning industry veteran “Colonel” George Allen took several shots at our publisher. They are easily debunked for those who care.

For example, Allen questioned Tony Kovach’s experience in journalism, research, and publishing.  Col. Allen may either be unaware or wanted to ignore the fact that L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach began journalism in high school, where he was the rotating editor for his school’s newspaper.

Some committee at the University of Oklahoma must have liked his work, because Tony was given a scholarship in Journalism. In time, he switched to history.  He was the first freshman in the university’s history to win the prestigious Lottinville Award in history.

According to the OUDaily, “According to Harlin, Lottinville is a former director of the OU Press and Regents Professor of History Emeritus. The awards are named after his late wife, Rita.“ Kovach began statewide winning awards in history in high school. There’s more, but that serves to disprove Col. Allen’s written concerns.

While we’ve not updated the statistical video posted below, those facts are all from third parties such as Webalizer and Mailchimp.

Our email list has grown substantially since the video above was produced, and continues to rise in the wake of our often controversial, but facts, documents, and accurate-quotes driven reports.

We are not the National Enquirer, but their slogan is a fine one that applies to our industry. Inquiring minds do want to know.  Those minds are both inside and outside of our industry. You, our sources, our sponsors, and team work have made us number one.

As Tim Williams said, if there is a fact error or a differing view that one wishes to present, email us at the link to the bottom, follow the submission tips, below.

The f-bombs demonstrate that we have broad shoulders at MHProNews.  We go where the facts, documents, evidence, and quotes lead us. That’s why we invite MHI and all others to publicly discuss the issues that are important for the industry’s growth.

This post will be updated next week with Amy Bliss and George Allen’s comments and the emails exchanged.

Average Income/Wealth by Age Group, Reports

September 27th, 2017 Comments off

AfricanAmericanSeniorsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsMost manufactured housing industry professionals that deal directly with the public for a year or more instinctively know that the older a person gets, the higher their income and net worth tends to be.

Recent research reported by the Washington Post and Business Insider verify those instincts.

The charts below provide an interesting context to a statement made by HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson, when he said that home owners have an average net worth of some $200,000, while renters have an typical net worth of only $5,000.

Part of the reason is age.

The younger the age group, the less likely they are to be a home owner.

The older an American gets, the higher the likelihood that they will be a home owner, and the higher their net worth tends to be.  ## (News, analysis.)

“Po-Dunk” – Kid Rock’s Video – Features Camo “Double Wide Trailer House”

July 27th, 2017 Comments off

Po-DunkKidRocksMusicVideoDoubleWideTrailerHouseManufacturedHomeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsKid Rock is the $80 million dollar net worth country-rock-pop-music icon, who may be running for the U.S. Senate.

In an upcoming feature on MHLivingNews, the spotlight will be on this star who is happy to live in a multi-section manufactured home.

In fact, his camo manufactured home is prominently featured the music video “Po-Dunk,” along with his Rolls Royce and private jet.

The home is sited on his property near Nashville, TN, says Rockfeed.

The multi-million view music video below has some salty “R” rated language in a few places, and is suggestive.

But the video also tells a tale of poor whites and blacks, whose single-section manufactured homes are often seen in the background.

A church, the U.S. flag, and firearms are all boldly on display.

Though Kid Rock’s use of the term “double-wide trailer” in interviews is less than ideal, he may be taking an ‘in your face’ attack at those who – like President Donald J. Trump – aren’t speaking up for the forgotten.

It’s those “irredeemable deplorables,” as Secretary Hillary Clinton called them in her 2016 campaign, who are featured in this video.

Surely, all these symbols in the video are no coincidence?

Watch for our upcoming feature on MHLivingNews.  Our publisher hopes you will quickly see why this may prove to be a powerful way to promote manufactured homes to millions of Americans: rich, poor or in between. # #

Manufactured Housing Industry Veteran Announces Retirement

October 6th, 2016 Comments off

Jim Regan. Credit: LinkedIn.

Northpoint Commercial Finance Director of Business Development, Jim Regan, has announced his retirement from the floor plan financing industry after 30 years of service.

In addition to consistently producing the highest yielding portfolio in the company, he was also named top sales performer in 2013. Regan was one of the initial employees and the second sales professional to join Northpoint after its 2012 inception.

I am mostly quite happy for Jim that he has come to this decision in his life,” said Jeff Olander, VP of National Accounts for Northpoint.

We all wish Jim would have stayed some more years with us – but, it is evident that Jim is very excited about his next phase. His constant out-of-anyone’s-box thinking challenged all of us to look at what we do and how we do things to see if there was a more efficient method.

More information on Jim Regan, his retirement from Northpoint Commercial Finance is available here. ##

The Big First Presidential Debate – Pundits, Politicos and Instant Polls

September 27th, 2016 Comments off

latimes-potus1clintontrump-postedmanufacturedhousingindustrydailybusinessnews-mhpronewsThe first super-hyped presidential debate of the 2016 election cycle is history.  There is what the pundits say.  There is what the politicos and news junkies walked away with.  There are instant polls, which to a certain degree will reflect what their readership composition is.

Then there are the voters.

Two of the three instant polls – not scientific polls -went for Trump, one was dead even as of the time this was published.  The LA Times daily tracking poll is also listed below.

Some of the top headlines from across the spectrum – and all three of those instant polls this morning, plus content and comments from around the web – are below.

Disclosures. The New York Times has already endorsed Hillary Clinton. NYT has had columns that urged reporters to tilt the campaign toward Clinton. By contrast, MHProNews’ editor is pro-Trump (we don’t claim to speak for sponsors or others, who may have differing views), but we do so based upon the issues. The country is on the wrong track, and Secretary Clinton will not change the track she has followed her entire political career.

A. ‘Tony’ Kovach to the role of show seminar coordinator. In a e-statement today, Hill wrote: “Tony, I am very glad that you are going to assume responsibility for putting together our seminar programs for this year’s Louisville Show…I look forward to working with you on this important event.” Planned topics for January 2012 seminar consideration will include enhancing profits for communities and retailers, financing opportunities, PR, marketing and sales coaching. Hill thanked George Allen for serving as seminar coordinator in 2011.  Allen in turn pledged his support for the 2012 seminar plans, and has already submitted numerous suggestions.  Those interested in presenting should contact Tony Kovach at, and include Louisville Show Presentation Concept in the subject line.
