Democrats? Republicans? Political Campaigns Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) PAC Supported

Longtime readers of MHProNews know that we’ve published more than one article that cast concerns about billionaire George Soros.  That disclaimer noted, this is one of those classic cases of the need to separate the wheat from the chaff with all people, organizations, and things.  There is good, bad, and meh to be found in all people and things.  Because what follows comes with a tip of the hat to the Soros-funded “Open Secrets” platform. Why? Because it is data – not opinion – driven.

Per Open Secrets Center for Responsive Politics, the following is based upon the data obtained by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) data released on February 01, 2019.

Our concerns about the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) are likewise well know to longtime, attentive readers.

In the days ahead, this article will likely be referenced several times in our ‘related reports’ that follow so many of our Daily Business News reports or Masthead news, commentaries, fact-checks and analysis.

Let’s note that MHProNews recognizes the right within the scope of the law and ethics of the MHI PAC to contribute to whomever.

Let’s further state that this pro-industry, pro-consumer, pro-growth industry trade platform similarly recognizes the right of individuals to do the same, within the framework of those same ethical and legal limits.

MHI is widely seen as being in the sway of a relatively small group of ‘big boy’ corporations.  Chief among those is Warren Buffett led Berkshire Hathaway.  Berkshire’s brands in MHVille include, but are not limited to, Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage Corp, and Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance.

See the related reports below for more insights on those operations.

B2B Statistics, Trends 2019 – April 2019 Snapshot of Manufactured Home Professional Readers

April 22nd, 2019 Comments off

B2BstatisticsTrends2019April2019SnapshotManufacturedHomeProfessionalReadersDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Research compiled from several sources as reported by Get Codeless yielded the following bullets about blogging trends and related business to business (B2B) marketing data.  The importance of their factoids will be more apparent further below.

Latest Blogging Statistics and Trends in 2019:

  • The average blog post length is 1,050 words
  • The average word count of top ranked content in Google is between 1,140-1285 words
  • On average, only 18% of companies’ blog posts are over 750 words
  • Longer, in-depth blog posts generate 9x more leads than short ones

  • The average blog post takes 3 hours 16 minutes to write
  • Blog titles with 6-13 words get the most consistent amount of traffic and hits
  • 64% of B2B marketers outsource blog copywriting
  • Negative messaging can result in a 63% click through rate lift over more positive ones

  • Content marketing will be a 300 billion dollar industry by 2019
  • Content marketing costs 62% less than traditional marketing endeavors yet generates 3x the amount of leads
  • The median annual spend on content marketing in 2015 was 1.75 million for large companies
  • B2B marketers spend 39% of their budget on content marketing

  • Companies that implement content marketing strategies see 6x higher conversion rates than those who don’t
  • Content marketing produces 3x the amount of leads as traditional marketing
  • The demand and use of infographics has increased 800% in the last year
  • 78% of consumers trust your brand if you create more customized content

Against that backdrop, consider the traffic report on MHProNews top 2 cPanels, as reported by Webalizer this morning at the date/time as shown further below.

Data requires context to be relevant. Keep in mind that our industry, per Cavco Industries data, has about 75,000 full time workers.

There’s no known industry statistic on what percentage of those workers are management or decision makers, vs. performing tasks that are less likely to be attracted to a site like this.  But it is arguably clear that the lionshare of those decision makers from MHVille are on MHProNews routinely, per third-party data, as shown.

As Barry Cole put it:

BarryColeMHInsuranceRVMHHallofFameCongratsManufacturedHomeIndustryMHProNews

Note, Barry Cole’s prior anniversary kudos message raises an important point. Most publications in the MH space failed or closed years ago. Some have since tried to make the cut, inspired by MHProNews’ success. Some noteworthy efforts have also since been suspended. MHProNews has stood the test of time, and the slings and arrows of the industry’s outrageous fortunes.

With that introduction, let’s look at MHProNews site data per Webalizer on this date.

Summary Period: April 2019
Generated 22-Apr-2019 07:01 CDT

Daily Avg

Hits Files Pages Visits
9606 8244 8492 3555
Apr-19 75132 60793 44953 8500
53445 12055

To date in April 2019, of those estimated 75,000 full time workers in MHVille, there are over 12,000 daily visits here on MHProNews and over 53,000 pageviews. Considering MHProNews typically publishes about 4 new posts during the week, it is noteworthy that 4.43 pageviews per visitor.  That means previously published content is being routinely viewed too.

The monthly totals for April 2019 are as follows.

Monthly Totals

Sites KBytes Visits Pages Files Hits
2637 5186994 78221 186831 181387 211340
32499 77265286 187011 988987 1337465 1652919
265232 1175818

Yes, you are seeing those spotlighted totals correctly.  There have been 265,232 visits, and 1,175,818 million pages viewed on MHProNews so far in the month of April, 2019.

Because of how Webalizer’s data is organized during a given month, the totals below are somewhat less than 51 weeks. That said, here are the ‘annual’ totals.

KBytes Visits Pages Files Hits
55388431 633487 1725580 1856922 2129217
1300268060 2800961 15092795 21062077 25999753
1.36E+09 3434448 16818375 22918999 28128970

There’s been 3.434 million visits in the ‘annual’ snapshot, and over 16.8 million pages viewed here on MHProNews.

Diving Deeper

Note that MHProNews has a mix of troubling or ‘bad’ news, along with ‘good’ news.  Now, recall the data point from Get Codeless, above.

  • Negative messaging can result in a 63% click through rate lift over more positive ones

Let’s flashback to an on-the-record comments by Legacy’s Casey Mack.

CaseyMackLegacyHousingManufacturedTinyHomesKudosMHProNews

Now, recall the bullet above:

  • The demand and use of infographics has increased 800% in the last year

Do you see the relationship?  Keep in mind, Mack is Legacy’s digital marketer.

Then, let’s consider again a few more quotes from Get Codeless.

  • 78% of consumers trust your brand if you create more customized content
  • The average blog post length is 1,050 words
  • The average word count of top ranked content in Google is between 1,140-1285 words

Then consider this on-the-record comment from an independent.

DearTonySoheylaNoGreaterResourceSpeakstoIssuesOpportunitiesWeFaceAsIndependentRetailersGusRodriguezTejasHomesTX

Gus’ message came in response to a series of exposes on issues within manufactured housing, as well as tips, strategies and opportunities.

While we mix-it-up on the length of posts, a number of articles on the Daily Business News on MHProNews are often in those longer categories that get more readers.

  • On average, only 18% of companies’ blog posts are over 750 words
  • Longer, in-depth blog posts generate 9x more leads than short ones

Let’s take on more quote from Legacy’s Mack.

CaseyMackTonySoheylaMHProNewsTeamFirstCallDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

MHProNews uniquely:

  • Follows the money.
  • Follows the facts, evidence, uses logical analysis, and looks at historic trends.

Nor does this site merely regurgitate the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) talking points that Omaha-Knoxville and ‘big boy’ firms want to promote. Rather, we consider what they and their affilates say in the light of facts, evidence, and results.

One more set of data, this time according to MailChimp.

  • MHProNews has a 227.8 percent higher click through rate on our emailed headline news than others in “media and publishing” mailing lists.
  • The open rate for MHProNews is 120.8 percent higher than others in “media and publishing.”

While mainstream news media readership is down, per the Pew Research report below in 2018, MHProNews readership has been rising.

PewResearchMediaEngagement2017vs2016DailyBusinessNewsMHProNews554

There are more reasons why MHProNews is the runaway #1 most-read trade media. But the facts above are important not only to marketers, but to the industry at large for several reasons.  This is where professionals from manufactured home operations of all sizes come.  A percentage of those readers are researchers, investors, advocates, and public officials.

The more MHProNews has focused on the issues that others shy away from in industry publishing, the higher MH Professional readership and engagement have become.

Febuary2019NewHUDCodeManufacturedHousingShipmentData

2018-12-10_0949SkyChampionManufacturedHousingShipmentHistoryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsNov2018

It is self evident to those who look at history and the facts that the industry is under-performing. Several MHI member companies have said as much, in their own IR presentations. Rollohome went from zero to 60,000 new homes shipped in 2 years. What was done before can be done again, better, faster, and with sustainable results, thanks to existing laws.

You can’t fix problems that is being obscured by much of the rest of the industry’s media and a number of MHI affiliated trade groups. Who says?  How about Zig Ziglar?

Over 1 Million Views in 3 Weeks! Helen’s Reality Check Reveals What’s Blowing Away Any Manufactured Home Industry Promotions

March 5th, 2019 Comments off

Over1MillionViewsIn3WeeksTinyHouseRealityCheckRevealsWhatsBlowingAwayAnyManufacturedHomeIndustryPromotionsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The home has a hitch.  It’s set up on blocks.  There are wooden shims, much like those found under millions of manufactured homes.  Helen’s home is a rectangle, a box.  The deck is big, but there are plenty of those found on thousands of manufactured homes.

So, what is it about this video that has drawn over a million views in under 3 weeks?

Answer.  For starters, it’s not a manufactured home. It’s not a mobile home. It’s a ‘tiny house.’  The name – the branding – has clearly made a difference.

Note: that doesn’t mean that the industry should run away from the name ‘manufactured home.’  It does mean that others have defined that, and it is time to make it cool, much like tiny houses are seen as hip and cool.

The Video and Report Reveal Opportunity

Don’t miss a moment of the video of Helen and her tiny house, or miss a word of this report.  Why?

Because if you catch it all, you’ll likely be blown away at the superior value of a manufactured home compared to Helen’s nice, but outrageous, tiny house.

But that – WOW! You’ve got to be kidding! – will happen ONLY occur if you check it all out. Our publisher and consultant, L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach has said that the industry needs to do three things: unbrand, rebrand, and brand. All three are needed, not just one.

When you watch the video, and you ‘step’ inside Helen’s ‘tiny house,’ the producer had a magical musical melody begin to play.

The unit itself, says the owner, is equal to a 10’x26’ feet (260 square feet, but she said that in meters).  That means it is smaller than the size of the smallest HUD Code manufactured home that regulations permit (which by code can be no smaller than 8’x40’ or 320 square feet).

Some points from the video to note:

1)    The video isn’t done by Helen, the home owner, it’s done by a third-party.

2)    The video is an interview and doesn’t just talk about the tiny house itself.

3)    Note too that the length of the video production – over 16 minutes – doesn’t keep people from watching this vid. While it is true that shorter videos may get more views, it’s also possibly a case of circling thinking. Videos are made shorter, because those who make them believe that’s what works, so there are more of them.  Recall that The Verge’s production called the future of housing – their modular home design and living videos series – aren’t 2, 3, or 5 minute videos either.  The Verge’s videos are heavily viewed, compared to those by the Manufactured Housing Institute, or even many done by Clayton Homes’ contracted production company.

Check out the video, if only to realize:

  • The business development principles our consultant teaches are grounded in reality, not fantasy, and have worked for those who use them.
  • What’s obvious – based upon the latest new manufactured home shipment report – is that what the industry at large and its ‘leaders’ are doing isn’t working. That’s no mean spirited, that’s just reality.  If the truth offends some, they need to deal with it.
  • Rather than industry pros and investors enabling the same mistakes, over and over, isn’t it time to do what’s proven to work for others?

Manufactured housing professionals must define themselves well, or others will define you and your operation, often to your own detriment. Tiny houses – like this one – are ‘sold’ as cool, and so people see them as ‘cool.’ This video ROMANCES this tiny house.

Manufactured home companies can do the same, with the right elements of marketing, sales, and follow up put into practice.

Sorry, big boys, but the industry is sadly failing at touting its amazing value. That’s what the drop in shipments should tell industry companies of all sizes.

Do Looming Shareholders Suits Against Cavco Industries Foreshadow Problems for More Manufactured Home Industry Publicly Traded Firms?

February 20th, 2019 Comments off

DoLoomingShareholdersSuitsAgainstCavcoIndustriesForeshadowWoesForMoreManufacturedHOmeIndustryPublicFirms

The headline question, according to a manufactured home industry attorney familiar with the issues, says what attorneys often do. “It depends.”

Under the headline, “RM LAW Announces Class Action Lawsuit Against Cavco Industries, Inc.” one reads the following.

RM LAW, P.C. is a national shareholder litigation firm.  RM LAW, P.C. is devoted to protecting the interests of individual and institutional investors in shareholder actions in state and federal courts nationwide,” said part of a February 6, 2019 press release to the Daily Business News on MHProNews.

There is a growing number of such shareholders law firms circling Cavco Industries (NASDAQ:CVCO).

But does the risk to industry operations stop there?

To tee up this nuanced topic, let’s first note as a disclosure that we are not attorneys. The Daily Business News on MHProNews aren’t giving legal advice to current or potential members of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI).

But we do get input from attorneys and legal sources, before we tackle tricky topics, such as this one, that can spell perhaps unanticipated risk to Cavco Industries (CVCO) and others.

We editorially believe there is value to warning the industry’s professionals about possibly looming threats. It is worth noting that it’s connections to Arlington, VA based MHI that arguably spells the risk.  Why MHI?  That will become clear, below. So, with those disclaimers noted, let’s dive in.

Next, let’s look at what Angela Gonzales of the Phoenix Business Journal said in a recent report on legal fees and increasing insurance by Cavco to cover the growing risks of litigation.  Gonzales’ narrative are found between the —- lines below

—–

SEC investigation spurs Phoenix homebuilder to pay $15.3M for directors, officers insurance

Ongoing investigation cost company more than $1M in legal expenses during recent quarter

·         Homebuilder experiences softening in home order rates beyond typical seasonal slowdown usually expected during winter months.

In the midst of a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigation, Phoenix-based Cavco Industries Inc. has paid $15.3 million for extra directors and officers liability insurance coverage.

·         While company officials of the manufactured homes producer won’t say exactly how much that policy will cover, they did say the extra coverage will be needed in light of the ongoing independent investigation, which cost the company $1.3 million in legal and other expenses during the third fiscal quarter ended Dec. 29, 2018.

·         Since receiving an SEC subpoena in November, company officials said they have cooperated with the SEC’s investigation into the trading of stock of another public company. At the time, Joseph Stegmayer stepped down as chairman, president and CEO after an internal investigation found he violated company policy related to securities trading activity.

·         Daniel Urness, who served as Cavco’s executive vice president and chief financial officer since 2015, stepped up to serve as president and acting CEO.

·         In a Feb. 5 earnings call with analysts, Urness said the company received an additional document subpoena request from the SEC related to the original securities trading activities.

·         “We are fully cooperating with the SEC and work to resolve this matter,” Urness told analysts.

·         After reviewing directors and officers liability coverage, Urness said it was determined that additional coverage was prudent.

·         “We recognize it’s costly,” he told analysts. “Clearly, this is because it does cover certain risks associated with the SEC issue.”

·         For the three months ended Dec. 29, Cavco reported $13.4 million in net income on $233.7 million in net revenue, down from $21.4 million in net income on $$221.4 million in net revenue during the same period in 2017, according to filings with the SEC.

·         However, net income was up to $48.7 million on $721.6 million for the nine months ended Dec. 29, from $39.4 million on $628.7 million in net revenue during the first nine months of 2017.

Now, circle back to a prior report on Cavco, and see part of their latest public disclosure.  Here’s what the Motley Fool said was the official transcript from their most recent results call, starting with Cavco’s Mark Fusler’s comments.

“Mark Fusler — Director of Financial Reporting

Thank you. And before we begin, please be advised that comments made during this conference call by management will contain forward-looking statements under the provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, including statements of expectations or assumptions about Cavco’s financial and operational performance, revenues, earnings per share, cash flow or use, cost savings and operational efficiencies.

Some factors that may affect the company’s results include, but are not limited to the risk of litigation or regulatory action arising from the subpoenas we received from the SEC, the risk of potential litigation or regulatory action arising from the SEC related internal investigation and its findings, potential reputational damage that Cavco may suffer as a result of matters under investigation, adverse industry condition, our involvement in vertically integrated lines of business, including manufactured housing, consumer finance, commercial finance and insurance, market forces and housing demand fluctuations, our business and operations being concentrated in certain geographical region, the loss of any of our executive officers, federal government shutdown, and extensive regulation affecting manufactured housing…”

Those disclosures by Cavco are meant in part to comply with transparency requirements, but also to reduce their risk of potential litigation.

The Risk of Litigation, and MHI Member Companies

Facts are what they are.  It only requires some surfing of this site to recognize this next fact.

Well in advance of the numerous pending Cavco suits, MHProNews was alone among industry publishers signaling risks associated with MHI connected firms.

With Cavco’s aim of reducing the risk of litigation in mind, let’s go to some specific pull quotes from their statements, above. You’ll begin to see why the facts about MHVille that outsiders are routinely unaware of could spell even more risk for that Phoenix, AZ based firm or others, as we work through Cavco’s (CVCO) own list.

  • potential litigation or regulatory action arising from the SEC related internal investigation and its findings,” – a contact at the SEC would not continue or deny to MHProNews that they were researching possible market collusion or antitrust related issues with respect to Cavco and Stegmayer.
  • potential reputational damage that Cavco may suffer as a result of matters under investigation…” – Where is there a disclaimer about risks that may come as a result of association with the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI)? Or that Joe Stegmayer is still the Chairman of MHI, and is reportedly saying things that would normally be the kind of statements made by a president, not the lesser role he is officially holding? More on that later purported risk is further below.
  • adverse industry condition,” – Given that Joe Stegmayer is MHI’s Chair, and MHI claims to ‘represent all segments of factory-built housing,’ how much risk is tied to those details? Is MHI truly doing their jobs well? If not, why not? There are legal sources that note that while not commonplace, perhaps, there is nevertheless examples of trade groups getting sucked into antitrust and other legal imbroglios.
  • our involvement in vertically integrated lines of business…” – if vertical integration is a risk, why isn’t it also risk to be working with potentially vulnerable independents? Which are more vulnerable, independents or vertically owned businesses units? Where is that disclaimer?
  • market forces and housing demand fluctuations…” – while technically accurate, this begs the question that the Urban Institute and others asked but arguably failed to properly answer. Why are so few manufactured homes being sold during an affordable housing crisis? Given that Cavco’s Stegmayer remains MHI’s Chairman, does that increase their exposure? How can he and his firm – or others in MHI – escape the notion that the industry is underperforming, and that they are in some measure to blame? See the comments from the MHI rival Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR), linked further below.
  • the loss of any of our executive officers, federal government shutdown, and extensive regulation affecting manufactured housing…” – this last one is precisely an eyebrow raising case of chasing a gnat that had near zero risk in the first place, yet was inexplicably raised by MHI EVP Lesli Gooch. Why would Stegmayer presumably okay a statement by Gooch, that had been on no ones radar before, and with good reasons not to make something out of nothing? To better understand that, please see the linked report via the text/image box below.

Wall Street, Lesli Gooch – Manufactured Housing Institute EVP – Penetrating Scotsman Guide Interview Analysis

Could Other MHI Member Companies Could be Facing Risks?

Cavco, in a recently updated IR document, corrected an estimated figure that MHI has not yet corrected. Relevant data and facts are part of how investors make decisions. Perhaps sparked by periodic MHProNews reports on that topic of inaccuracies voiced by MHI, Cavco apparently reacted. If Cavco corrected an inaccurate data-point, why not MHI? When investors or prospective investors are told that the data comes from MHI – which is credibly accused of botching or misleading facts, figures, and more – does that create liabilities?

Absent sufficient disclosures, it might, say legal minds.

A Secret Society…?

MHI members who sit on a division board have voiced concerns with MHProNews that it is run like a “secret society,” with a select few ‘in the Know,’ and all others kept at arms length.

The pushback by Jeff Bezos vs. the National Enquirer opens a door that MHIndustry pros should ponder.  If Bezos says that their purported threat amounted to illegal extortion – how much more does that fear-based threat that stories like the one below inspires in MHVille?  These are wrinkles that industry outsiders are unlikely to grasp without sufficient research.

“Mobile Home Militia,” Retail/Production Sources, Sound Alarm Against Clayton Homes, CMH, New “Anti-Competitive Practices” Allegation

Note that these and other concerns are connected with MHI insiders.

ManufacturedHousingInstituteLogoMHIBoardOfDirectorsLogoMHIExecutiveCommittee

Outsiders looking in may not fully grasp the bold and nuanced issues that impact the industry, and thus publicly traded firms too. Few if any MHI members are arguably giving the proper disclosures to their current or potential shareholders.

So, there are several reasons to be concerned that MHI staff – presumably under the board of directors tacit or active approval – has behaved in ways contrary to the interests of the majority of the industry.

If so, and member firms that are publicly traded aren’t disclosing those concerns, isn’t that far greater risk than running out of HUD labels caused by a partial federal shutdown that is now  nowhere on the horizon?

There is arguably no way that the shareholders plaintiffs attorneys circling Cavco could fully grasp the full story without expert insights. The fact that some of those lawfirms circling Cavco have been in touch with our publisher, and/or have signed up for our emailed news updates, reflects the growing reality that the truth about MHVille is coming out in stages. That’s both risk and opportunity in disguise, for those willing to connect the dots

MHProNews plans a related report and will monitor this developing case at the Akron Mobile Home Park in Akron, NY. While the Manufactured Housing Institute holds their winter fund-raiser -err, winter meeting – in Austin, TX, welcome to the ongoing drama that is buffeting MHVille in 2019. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Cavco Industries New Board Member, Susan L. Blount – Corporate, Manufactured Home Industry Insights on Pick, Timing

CavcoIndustriesLogoCVCOlogoNewBoardMemberSusanLBlountPhotoManufacturedHomeIndustryInsightsPickTimingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Cavco Industries (CVCO) has provided a recent release to the Daily Business News on MHProNews, regarding the announced selection of Susan L. Blount to the troubled firm’s Board Of Directors.

We’ve held that release for reasons that yesterday’s report on Cavco make clear. Before turning to portions of the Cavco release, industry sources tell MHProNews what this move represents.

Blunt on the Cavco Board of Directors is “…meant to inspire confidence both now and going forward…” for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), plus the firm’s current and prospective shareholders.

Sources also say that this move to bring Blount on board is meant to blunt prospective plaintiffs attorneys too. Cavco, per sources, have engaged in several moves designed to prepare the firm for the legal battles that are expected.  For more on those legal issues, see the related reports, further below.

Here are some quotes from Cavco’s release to MHProNews, following the composite screen capture from LinkedIn.

No Kings in America? – John Sherman ‘Speaks’ to Manufactured Housing

January 16th, 2019 Comments off

NoKingsInAmericaJohnShermanSpeakstoManufacturedHousingDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

If we will not endure a king as a political power, we should not endure a king over the production,
transportation, and sale of any of the necessities of life
.”

— John Sherman

Sherman was a mover in what today is known as the Sherman antitrust act. The act was sponsored by Senator John Sherman (1823–1900) of Ohio, as a leading anti-monopolistic leader.  The quotes speaks for itself. Among the necessities we should not have a monopoly over the production of affordable manufactured housing.

JohnShermanWikiDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The next two more contemporary quotes are more sobering.  Both come from the political left.

Antitrust law isn’t about protecting competing businesses from each other,
it’s about protecting competition itself on behalf of the public
.”

–      Al Franken

This antitrust thing will blow over.”

–      Bill Gates

Keep in mind that Gates’ Microsoft was the target of an antirust action. Gates and Warren Buffett are in several ways, joined at the hip. Gates, in a very specifric sense, turned out to be correct.  More on those points another time.

This quote below is also from the progressive side of the aisle. All but the first and next quote are from AZ Quotes.

From a non-profit’s website: “The Open Markets Institute uses journalism to promote greater awareness of the political and economic dangers of monopolization, identifies the changes in policy and law that cleared the way for such consolidation, and fosters discussions with policymakers and citizens as to how to update America’s traditional political economic principles for our 21st century digital society.”

Let’s turn to a former and famous president.

Beware of that profound enemy of the free enterprise system who pays lip-service to free competition, but also labels every antitrust prosecution as a persecution.”

–      Franklin D. Roosevelt

Back to Franken.

Most Americans don’t think about antitrust law when they look at their cable bill, flip channels on TV, or worry about what their favorite website knows about them. But they should.”

–      Al Franken

Changing technologies, changing marketplaces, and even changing trends in anti-competitive practices have all presented challenges to antitrust enforcement.”

–      Al Franken

Then, there is Green Party candidate for president, Jill Stein. For all of these, keep in mind, wheat and chaff.  You don’t have to agree on everything, to agree on specific things.

We need to use antitrust laws. You know, we need to create real media again.”

–      Jill Stein

It’s time to use the antitrust laws and to break up this conglomerate corporate media that has now poisoned our democracy to the point that our very survival is at risk for the kinds of monstrosities that are flourishing in our corporate media dominated discussion.”

–      Jill Stein

There are voices on the right that favor use of antitrust action.  One of them is below.

Vigilant and effective antitrust enforcement today is preferable to the heavy hand of government regulation of the Internet tomorrow.”

–      Orrin Hatch

Here’s a surprising one, a former Democrat, who today is a member of the GOP.

If I am elected President, I will end the special interest monopoly in Washington, D.C.

– Donald Trump

From President Donald J. Trump, to a plank in the Democratic Party’s ‘new deal’ plan, and others in between, are calling for a break-up of several major conglomerates.  From the FAANGs, to major media conglomerates, to Berkshire Hathaway and others, there is a need to restore balance to both the market and politics. Regulations can’t fix this, only a breakup – like the AT&T breakup – will do.

A useful overview of the topic of monopoly is explored in a reasonably balanced way in this video below.  For example, the video explains the limited cases – such as public utilities – when a monopoly can make sense, although that too could become a dated view as various technologies emerge that could allow more competition for utilities.  The video uses facts and humor as it educates, and has had hundreds of thousands of views.

Monopolies and Anti-Competitive Markets: Crash Course Economics

Those voices in MHVille that stand mute or even actively oppose a discussion of monopoly are practically defending those that are monopolizing manufactured housing. That hurts independent businesses, consumers, government – almost everyone – save for the limited numbers who are doing the monopolization.

As an independent operation that favors free enterprise, we stand foursquare against monopolistic forces, because they are corrosive of the economic and thus political system in America. See the related reports, linked below. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Amid Market Turmoil, Nearly $1 Trillion Dollar Investment Fund Nuveen Bullish on Manufactured Housing, Provides Investor Outlook

January 2nd, 2019 Comments off

AmidMarketTurmoilNearly1TrillionInvestmentNuveenFundManufacturedHousingProvidesInvestorOutlookMHProNews

Nuveen isa TIAA company,” a.k.a. the “Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America-College Retirement Equities Fund.” Nuveen had assets under management (AUM) of “$970 billion USD (December 2017),” per Wikipedia.

TIAAInsuranceWikiDailyBUsinessNewsMHproNews

In their annual forecast for 2019, Nuveen’s leadership said as follows.

  • We believe we are in the late innings of the bull market, but the cycle is not over yet. We see market corrections as buying opportunities and continue to emphasize quality growth companies and cyclical sectors. If a recession comes earlier than expected, amid higher rates or inflation, investors would be less willing to pay premium multiples for growth. Market neutral, defensive, quality and yield strategies should become more compelling in such an environment.”

Among one of their bullets on real estate?

  • “…We believe some of the best opportunities exist in alternative sectors, such as data centers and manufactured housing.”

To place that commentary from Nuveen into its broader context, here below is their unedited bulleted outlook on real estate sector in general for 2019.

NuveenRealEstateOutlook2019ManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

  • “Real estate fundamentals are expected to remain solid in 2019, despite the market’s late cycle, rising interest rates and structural change disrupting the office and retail sectors. Positive global growth forecasts and an overall balance of supply and demand continue to support net operating income and property values. Commercial real estate continues to attract capital, with stable income returns generally exceeding those available in fixed income. However, little or no capital appreciation can be expected and putting new capital to work remains challenging.
  • Structural change driven by demographics, technology and consumer trends are creating opportunities to add alpha. We expect global cities benefiting from advanced technology, sustainable development and rising urbanization to outperform through changing market cycles. The upheavals impacting office and retail are generating demand for high-tech buildings with flexible office space and light industrial warehouses. We believe some of the best opportunities exist in alternative sectors, such as data centers and manufactured housing.
  • Residential apartments globally are benefiting from strong demand among middle-income families and millennials priced out of home ownership. Global real estate debt’s stable income returns and lower volatility have offered risk protection for real estate equity portfolios.
  • Risks to the outlook include underestimating the need to “future proof” portfolios by incorporating exposure to emerging new sectors, such as providers of flexible office space and co-living apartment buildings.”

— end of extended quotes from Nuveen —

NuveenInvestmentFundManagementDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The Nuveen forecast mirrors several points from recent reports on the Daily Business News on MHProNews.

That said, while there is indeed “…some of the best opportunities…” in “manufactured housing…,” long-time careful readers of this industry-leading trade media know that manufactured home shipments are underperforming.  That means there is strong upside, but it also means that the arguably artificial headwinds that make that underperformance a reality must be understood and addressed.

Father and Son, How Often? Common Sense, and Manufactured Housing Industry Week in Review 10-21 to 10-28-2018

October 28th, 2018 Comments off

1. It can be interesting to observe a father and son.  ‘Whenever you encounter a problem, what do you do?’ father Tony asked 11 year old son Tamas (pronounced ‘tah mash.’) “Goal and solution orientation,” young Tamas promptly said.

2. How often do you want your marketing message seen or heard? Once or twice a month? Or would it be better if it was several times daily?

Do you want your marketing message seen by qualified candidates, the right target audience, or by those who might never give you, your product or service a second thought?

The answers are obvious, aren’t they? It’s common sense.

A hurricane and days of rain were not enough to stop Legacy Housing from having two back-to-back, highly successful events this fall.  Trade show season prep for 2019 is underway or about to begin.  Do you want a better result?  Why not do what Legacy or others have done, and use this platform, which has the biggest and most engaged audience?  MHProNews is number one for many reasons.  Proven results are among them, click here.

Every year, at show time for manufactured housing, we pack it all up and take our son on the road for a week for each major trade show.  We look forward to seeing thousands of you in person, at one of the upcoming 2019 events.

3. Common Sense.

Common sense is making a come-back in America. To get a better outcome, you have to do things differently.  That’s common sense.  To improve results, you have to fact-check the claims of those who say they are leading the industry, and see if they are in fact leading in a good, bad, or meh direction.

LinkedIn, Manufactured Housing, and Manufactured Home Industry Professional Insights

October 8th, 2018 Comments off

LinkedInLogoManufacturedHousingManufacturedHomeprofessionalsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsLogo

LinkedIn is a useful tool in several respects, one which thousands of manufactured home industry professionals enjoy.

While Facebook certainly has more MH professional users, LinkedIn provides a different look, feel, features, and experience.

Social media in many respects is ‘public,’ so on publicly posted messages, there is no expectation of privacy.  But so as not to discourage industry comments in social media, this Daily Business News on MHProNews item will not spotlight specific names in this post.

On a recent post by MHProNews on LinkedIn, a self-described Clayton Homes devote protested our coverage of a specific article that featured a mainstream media report by an ABC News affiliate.

That’s fine, it is her right, and our publisher thanked her for her comments. In fact, it sparked a useful discussion, worth reading. Let’s begin with the back ground.

ABC video reflected significant service problems on a manufactured home sold by one of their TRU producers.  As our publisher – L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach – explained to that pro-Clayton industry professional on LinkedIn, this trade publication has for years done fact-checks, analysis and commentary on mainstream media reports about other companies in manufactured housing.  Perhaps she didn’t carefully read that article or view that video, because the video was used in part to turn lemons into lemonade.

Clayton is therefore no exception to our coverage of problems attributed to an industry company that has drawn mainstream media attention, and/or our analysis of such coverage and news.  As the largest producer and retailing company in our industry, Clayton no doubt gets more such coverage, but that is true in mainstream media too.

How Hot Is That Clayton Homes Story?

That story about Clayton’s service complaints is far and away the most popular read on MHProNews at this moment in October.  To understand the following data, as we’ve explained previously, MHProNews has numerous URLs and several C-panels.  Each of those has their own unique statistics and traffic. So, when we reveal ‘back end’ data, this is from only one c-panel, not all of them.  Rephrased, what follows is a fraction of the traffic, not all MHProNews traffic.

Per Webalizer – a third-party analytics provider – here is the data from one C-panel for our trade media site, as of Generated 08-Oct-2018 07:02 CDT.  The first number reflects the rank on that article on our website, the second the hits on that article, and the third rectangular box is the URL.

2 15523 http://www.MHProNews.com/blogs/daily-business-news/clayton-homes-ripped-by-customer-complaints-spotlighted-on-abc-news/

Clayton Homes Ripped by Customer Complaints Spotlighted on ABC News

Comparisons help someone get a better sense of that traffic. To give you a sense of just how hot that is, another Clayton article from September – for the entire month, not just 7.3 days, produced the following hit count. Again, the first is rank on our website from that URL at that time, the second is hits, the third is the URL.

13 10015 http://www.MHProNews.com/blogs/daily-business-news/toxic-trailers-clayton-homes-warren-buffett-kevin-clayton-clintons-expose-videos/

“Toxic Trailers” – Clayton Homes, Warren Buffett, Kevin Clayton, Clintons – Exposé Videos

MHInsiderManufacturedHousingINdustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsNote that either of those data-points arguably reflects more readers than any other trade publication in manufactured housing today. MHProNews gets more readers in a day, than other MH trade publishers in our industry might garner in an entire month for all of their content.  The photo of MH Insider that is shown is just one way of reflecting that reality.

Take Aways?

First, while there are routinely occasions when:

  • via social media, or in
  • calls and messages to MHProNews
  • gets feedback for, against or in between on a particular article.
  • There is often significant interest in articles on Clayton, 21st, Vanderbilt, their leaders and Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett.

Second, articles that fact-check the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) also get thousands of hits, as do a number of others every month. Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) reports gets thousands of hits, and the MHARR News module often gets 5 figures of hits.  MHI stopped providing articles directly to MHProNews some years ago (note: they did to the Journal as well, prior to their ceasing publication), but others often provide them, for the purposes of fact-checks.

One obvious takeaway is that thousands of industry professionals want to have information other than what is sanitized or weaponized by MHI, Clayton, 21st and their purportedly ‘bought and paid for’ trade media allies.

As MHProNews – which has long been the number #1 trade media in manufactured housing – is often the only source for such reports, analysis and fact-checks, it is no surprise that ‘inquiring minds want to know.’  Others print items of interest, but debatably the reason that we dominate is because we cover topics and issues that others can’t, don’t or won’t.

As a result, MHProNews traffic has more than doubled since November of 2017, both in visits daily and in page views, as the Webalizer screen capture below reflects.  Again, this is one of numerous URLs – only one C-panel of statistics, a fraction of total MHProNews traffic, not all traffic.

2018-10-08_1115WebalizerDataDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

People want a full range of news, not just MHI hand-picked news. One reason why MHARR and MHProNews are so popular, is precisely because information that readers won’t get from MHI, are found here. On federal regulatory issues, the MHARR website covers insights in a very different way – fact and evidence based – than what MHI presents on a similar topic.

Why Does It Matter?

That community professional’s LinkedIn comments were largely polite, and ostensibly at her own initiative. When Tony asked her after the industry was broken off after the post linked below with Clayton, 21st et al, or would it be better off if those giants were broken up under anti-trust laws

The industry gets MHI and their ‘big boy’ backers news shoved down their throats from several third parties, and/or directly. MHI provides no diversity of opinion. When we provide MHI, Clayton or others a chance to respond, their responses are routinely off the record, not on, if they come at all.

Clayton Homes Consumer Complaints Saga Continues, Mold and More

Off-the-record replies from Clayton Homes team members on this ABC news controversy are found at the link above.  Keep in mind, that in the regrettably smaller world of manufactured housing, negative news that hits them, often unjustly spills over to others in the industry.

It arguably matters to the bottom line of independents and others, even if you don’t carry Clayton product.  Hopefully, by spotlighting them, they’ll not only address this consumer’s concerns, but others before they hit the mainstream media to further impair the industry’s public image.

Note that MHProNews has also raised the issue that conventional housing can have similar problems on homes that are often many times the cost of a manufactured home.  See the related reports, linked further below.

We’ll close this by noting that industry professionals feedback is encouraged, as are topic suggestions and news tips.  Several stories that we do are published because of tips from readers. “We Provide, You Decide.”  © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Pain, Pleasure, Persuasion, Honesty, and Sustainable MHVille Profits

September 9th, 2018 Comments off

SundayMorningRecapManufacturedHousingIndustryNewsMHProNewsLogoResearchDataReports9.2.2018to9.9.2018

There are precisely three ways to influence any organization of whatever size.

Influence can only occur:

  • From within an organization,
  • from outside of a given group or
  • from a combination of both.

That’s the clarity of applied logic or common-sense reasoning.

PainPleasurePersuasionHonestyAndSustinableMHVilleProfits

Pain, Pleasure, Persuasion, Honesty, and Sustainable MHVille Profits.

Day by day, MHProNews and MHLivingNews presents facts, figures, evidence, analysis, reasoning, and specific stories.

Why?

Because it works. Reasoning and stories influence people.

Let’s be clear. Some will run from reason or will avoid topics that make them uncomfortable. But the subconscious mind, once exposed to a fact, doesn’t readily forget it. Facts and evidence may get drowned out for a time, but reality has a way of making a comeback.

Pain in the body is a signal that something is wrong. Pleasure and pain can both be manipulated. Emotions used correctly motivates, used incorrectly, can be tricked and manipulated. Humanity was created with both emotion and the ability to reason.

Carrots, sticks, and repetition are how people get attracted, maneuvered, or manipulated. But a cogent presentation of facts and evidence can cut through the noise with some, and those people can in turn influence others.

Let’s start with an example outside of professional associations, but that still matter to everyone in MHVille. Manufactured home (MH) resident groups.

MH resident groups can be right, wrong or a combination of those.

But right or wrong, MH resident groups clearly have influence. Here are a few examples:

  • For years, the Manufactured Housing Consensus Committee (MHCC) has had one or more resident group members on it. The MHCC, which meets again this week, has legally established influence at HUD, under the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA).
  • You may or may not give the MHCC a second thought. But the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR), and the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), some companies, and state association certainly do. So do resident groups. Because the MHCC can influence several things that impact the HUD Code manufactured homes that are sold by the industry.
  • At state legislatures, at the local governments level, or in congressional hearings, resident groups have and can make a difference for or against a pending law or other administrative actions.

Knowing this about resident groups, there are state associations that work with them as best they can.

MHARR has had contact with them too, on issues like the Duty to Serve (DTS) Manufactured Housing mandated for the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs or Enterprises) of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act (HERA) in 2008.

As those who have sat in MHI meetings know, MHI leaders have often cursed resident groups. But like them or not, NMHOA, MHAction and their state affilates are a reality. Better deal with them, or one must find a way to replace their influence with something better.

MH Resident groups matter.

As community owners in numerous states have learned, resident groups can’t be ignored. If they are ignored, it is only at a cost. So, you don’t have to like MHAction or NMHOA to realize they’re a reality that influences bottom-lines literally from coast-to-coast.

But up until recently, who has thought to challenge them in publicly in a debate? Or what about supplanting/replacing them when they won’t see reason on issues that can improve the lives of residents they claim to care about, as well as businesses like yours?

Let’s look at another example, from outside or MHVille. Political parties and candidates.

What government at all levels does or doesn’t do absolutely influences businesses of all sizes. That’s true in and beyond manufactured homes.

So, MHProNews uniquely looks at “News Through the Lens of Manufactured Homes, and Factory-Built Housing.” ©

You ignore politics at the risk of your investments of time, talent, and treasure.

You might have the best product, service, value, and the happiest customers. But government action or inaction on an important issue can strengthen, weaken, speed, slow or destroy your business.

The power to tax, and the power to regulate involve are the power to destroy. That’s based on a Supreme Court justice’s famous statement, shown below. That’s reality.

JohnMarshallSupremeCourtJusticePowertoTaxInvolvesPowerToDestoryPowerToDestroyMayDefeatPowertoCreateQuoteDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Like it or not, political parties, resident groups, associations, and media all influence government.  Government in turn sets the rules that can make or break your business.

So, if you want to be successful long-term in business:

1)    you have to go beyond product, service, marketing, sales and technology. You have to be aware of, and hopefully influence those, that influence others.

2)    If you don’t pay attention to those outside factors, others are and will set the rules of the game in ways that will help or harm your business.

ManufacturedHousingAssocRegulatoryReformJOINMHARRbani-200x200

Click here or the image above to learn more, which is not connected to this report.

3)    The same is true for homeowners. Whatever the intent of their members, NMHOA and MHAction arguably advocate for things harmful to manufactured home owners and businesses alike. Proving the harm of radical activists by a cogent use of facts, evidence, and reasoning is thus useful to all.  By all, that means the vast majority of MH home owners, as well as to MH businesses of all sizes and types.

4)    The same is true of both major parties. As political independents, we can say there is one thing about the Democratic platform that – on paper – is good for independent businesses. What is it? Their antitrust/anti-monopoly plank could, if used properly, make a difference for small businesses. But we frankly don’t see Democrats using it yet. Republicans – the so-called Grand Old Party or GOP – tends to be more pro-businesses.  But the GOP has for years done, or failed to do, certain things that harm independents of all sizes. But now, at the federal level and in dozens of states, the GOP has a modest edge in the branches of elected government.

ManufacturedHomeIndustry#1HeadlineNewsMHProNews

To see a sample of our emailed news update, click here. To sign up for the factory-built home industry’s #1 headline news, click here or the graphic above.

5)    Thankfully, under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership, he is addressing issues in the GOP like the border, immigration, regulatory relief, tax cuts, tax reform, attracting more capital, putting solid Constitutionally minded justices on the Supreme Court, protecting religious liberty, job creation, helping wages rise naturally, education, etc. These are all pragmatic.  They are useful to people and businesses alike. Thus, Pro-Trump candidates are thus getting our vote and editorial support.

But the point of this analysis and commentary is this.

You may be the most honest or ethical person in your town. You may have great value and service. But as ELS’ Sam Zell observed, others with no investment in your company or profession others can make, break, minimize or maximize your business, profits, and results.

That’s why on the slowest day of the Labor Day weekend, literally thousands of more professionals were reading and viewing content on MHProNews than any other similar trade resource in our industry. Because we at MHProNews and on MHLivingNews keep our eyes on issues that matter to you, as well as to your present, and potential customers.

Pain, pleasure, persuasion, and honestly sustainable MHVille profits can only be achieved via reality-based action. That requires solid information. Day-by-day, we bring you the MH “Industry News, Tips, and Views Pros Can Use.” ©
