For decades, Americans have been living a sort of “through the looking glass” from the pages of the novel, Alice in Wonderland.

Through the looking glass” is a metaphorical expression. It means: on the strange side, in the twilight zone, in a strange parallel world. It comes from the idea of Lewis Carol’s novel: “Through the LookingGlass“, and the strange and mysterious world Alice finds when she steps through a mirror,” per Quora.

Until fairly recently, without sex, there was no motherhood. To deny the power of sex is to deny the power of life and living. It should not be over nor under stated.

It was a fairly short time-frame from Dr. Zhivago (1965) being seen subtly under the sheets in that Hollywood blockbuster until the casual sex – and madness – of another hit movie, Network (1976).

If you don’t think culture or videos matter to Manufactured Housing professionals in the U.S. Canada – or even down under – ask a Millennial that watches Netflix’s Trailer Park Boys their feelings about manufactured homes. They’ll educate you in a snap.

Or ask some of the approaching 6 million who watched Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’s hit viral video, Mobile Homes – who laughed as they nodded their heads in agreement.

To be modestly successful in manufactured homes (MH), you can ignore culture and its impact. But to become wildly successful ethically and honorable in your market(s), I don’t see how you can grow your business to 10 or 20 times your current MH retail sales levels – which is doable, honestly – without understanding human nature, culture, and the levers that maneuver Western and American society.

It’s useful to embrace history, under whatever banner one names it.

Investors crave a high degree of certainty. Don’t ask me, ask Warren Buffett or other billionaires.

One question is, how is that ‘high degree of certainty’ being achieved in practice?

Jeff Bezos has been the world’s richest man, but sexting and related cost him his marriage and resulted in perhaps the most expensive divorce in history. That’s a small indication of the power of sex over even a wealthy, successful personality.

Has Bezos’ or Buffett’s sexual history kept the media from fawning over either man?

Hardly.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is the current Democratic front runner.  According to Real Clear Politics (RCP), he’s about 25 points ahead of Bernie Sanders. Let’s not quibble for the moment over how accurate – or not – such polling may be. Biden’s famously snuggled, hugged, kissed, and played with the hair of women he didn’t know well, or at all. That’s all on camera. Donald J. Trump, now President Trump, for years was a celebrated womanizer.  But he’s slammed by much of the media for similar behavior? Can you spell double-standards?

The point isn’t to elevate or excuse one over the other. Rather, it’s to reveal the disconnects and hypocrisy.

Looking back at old episodes of I Love Lucy, she and Desi slept in separate beds. How odd for a married couple, though it did – and still does – occur. Watch old Hollywood movies. Before Dr. Zhivago famously moved ever so little under the sheets with his paramour by his side in an adulterous affair, sexuality was just under the surface long before that ‘racy’ scene.

It’s one thing to understand human weaknesses and foibles, and another to celebrate or manipulate them. For example, some drug kingpins became wealthy celebrities. Behind a veneer of generosity to some, was ruthless murder and torture to enforce an organization that would have eventually killed a drug lord otherwise.

There are disconnects between the “me too” movement and the sexual revolution. We see on TV a female political candidate decrying unwanted sexual advances.  Meanwhile that same politico ignores the rape and predatory sexual behavior occurring daily south of the border as illegal immigration is encouraged by open border policies. One female candidate floated making prostitution legal nationally. It’s Alice peering through the looking glass. Darkly.

Politics and business intersect. Period. Don’t like it? Get over it. It is what it is.

Business and culture intersect. These first two intersections impact manufactured housing tremendously.

Religion and morality intersect with business too.

Those who protest that your or society’s moral views should not be imposed on them may well protest moments later if you threaten them with a gun or knife, demanding some or all they’ve worked for in life. Put differently, there are moral standards almost all agree are correct. Every law to some extent is a moral judgment.

America has been a social experiment from the days when the first settlers came here. They wanted religious, political, as well as economic freedom.  They knew what oppression was. They risked all to come to the shores of the first colonies on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Those early social experiments led to a revolution against England, their king, and crown authorized monopolies. The pre-revolutionary Boston Tea Party wasn’t just a tax protest, it could be viewed as a protest against the crown’s monopoly granted to that tea company.

What does this have to do with Mother’s Day?

Everything. At the center of society is the family. Without motherhood, there would be no next generation. Without singles or households, what housing would be needed or sold?

What’s wrong in America is that we don’t ask what’s right, to paraphrase G.K. Chesterton.

We need moral standards, even when we may fail to keep them. We’ve all been hypocrites about something. Let’s recognize that fact, then ask, how did we get into this present exciting yet vexing era?

There has long been those who’ve manipulated others through music, videos, literature, imagery, so-called education, finance, and government.

There are Ten Commandments that God gave humanity. Jews, Christians, Muslims, others largely agree on some variation of those ten laws. God didn’t make people robots, which lacked free will. If you’ve ever wondered why ‘so and so did such and such,’ and ‘why didn’t God stop it?’ The answer is simple. Free will. God respected us enough to give humans the ability to choose between what’s right and what’s wrong.

Our nation and much of Western society have undergone gut wrenching upheavals. Societal, cultural, governmental, business – and yes religious and moral forces – are coming to a head. We won’t speculate on what’s next.

What we can know is that God is good, patient, and merciful. Embracing truth is part of the solution. Motherhood was part of the mystery of the Creator’s plan.

America’s founding fathers were humans, imperfect as are we today. But they had a moral compass that complimented the economic, religious, and political vision. They knew no society could long endure absent religion and objective morality.

Relativism doesn’t work. Ultimately, relativism devolves into power struggles. The United States was predicated on an idealistic notion that government was to be subservient to the people, not the rulers of “We, the People.”

There can be a degree of fear or uncertainty in considering idealistic yet historic concepts. But let’s note that failure to ponder – and increasingly practice time-tested principles anew – is to condemn ourselves to a society that will finally break down in lawless chaos ruled by rival gangs. There are parts of the world that’s already the case. That’s not good for business, people, or anything else.

As a sinner myself, the point isn’t to lord one’s postured nobility over others. It is to understand what makes for a good and just society, and seek to live it personally.

Millions have the simple dream of earning an honest living, and at the of the day, returning to a home they call their own.  Millions of those homes were and can be built in a factory.

Millions want to enjoy the blessings of a family. Society is founded on such households.

What’s gone wrong in America can’t be summed up in 1400 words, or can it? We need to celebrate the good. We need to strive to minimize what’s wrong. We need to make home ownership easier in a sustainable fashion.

Those homes will include millions of moms, whom we should collectively celebrate today.

The laws needed by our manufactured home industry are already on the books. HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s speech linked below on manufactured housing and their value is a fine place to start. We need to enforce good, existing laws. We need to expose the corruption of those who’ve misled so many, hoping to make a dishonest buck.

Happy Mother’s Day.

With no further adieu, let’s look at the articles from the week that was.

“Check Your Facts,” “Follow the Money” – Journalist Sharyl Attkisson, Fake News, MHVille Takeaways

December 13th, 2018 Comments off

CheckFactsFollowMoneyJournalistSharylAttkissonFakeNewsMHVilleTakeAwaysDailyBusinessNEwsMHProNews

Few themes arise” in mainstream media “organically,” said Attkisson in this TEDx talk video. She relates a story by a propagandist.  “It’s like a movie,” the propagandist explained, giving her chills at that moment. “Nearly every scene or image that crosses our path in our daily life was put there for a reason,” he said, per Attkisson, who is an award winning journalist. Those themes, per the propagandist, are “authored by someone that paid a lot of money to put them there.”

She proposes the whole fake news campaign could be aimed to make people doubt one particular side of a narrative, news source, or website.

Attkisson explains that when she connects the dots, she finds it useful to “follow the money.” That’s a theme that Marty Lavin has hammered for years, and that MHProNews has particularly utilized in 2018 and before.

Who was funding the non-profit First Draft and its anti-fake news effort?” the seasoned journalist rhetorically asked.

It was Google.

Google exec Eric Schmidt, a Hillary Clinton supporter and campaign adviser, was behind the First Draft platform, explained the investigative reporter.

Now for those on the progressive side of politics, keep in mind that Attkisson came from CBS News. She strives to be unbiased, independent, in her perspective as a mainstream journalist is supposed to be trained to do. David Brock, Clinton’s surrogate at Media Matters and Clinton were both on the “fake news train.”

I’m not the only one who thinks the whole thing smacked of a roll-out of a propaganda campaign,” the reporter says in her TEDx talk. Glen Greenwald of the Intercept said that those who denounce fake news are often the ones guilty of it.

There’s tons of content like what she says online, but not all of it is from sources as reputable as Attkisson. We found this particular-gem today. She says Donald Trump co-opted the “Fake News” term, he didn’t create it. The ploy, she argues, backfired on the left’s purported proponents.

Powerful Interest Trying to Manipulate

Attkisson says she is not trying to litigate who is correct.  Rather, she is saying that “powerful interests are trying to manipulate your opinion.”

As regular, longer time, Daily Business News on MHProNews readers know, we’ve been on this theme that predates this TEDx talk by some time.  We were already following facts, evidence, history, and the money.  We admit that there was some things – that are arguably fake – that we were either blinded to, or distracted from. It was industry voices – people in positions of knowledge – that patiently told us the lay of the land on some issues we didn’t have completely right.

Now, we seek to be patient with those who wonder what’s wrong with the industry that ought to be doing many times better than it is.

Attkisson gives expert tips.

These go beyond industry divisions, or national politics, by striking at the heart of seeking the truth.

That’s what our industry should be focused on, getting the truth out about our products and services. We’ll paraphrase some of her takeaways, while encouraging you to see and hear what she’s observed and discovered.

  • Is the media trying to shape or censor facts, rather than report them?
  • When it seems that everyone in the media industry is using the same words, the same narratives, even the same phrases, “it might be the result of an organized campaign.”
  • She warns against “media literacy,” an effort to get laws passed to make one side’s version of reality to be taught and accepted in public schools. She says they are developing websites, working with journalists, and universities. This is a red flag, she argues. Attkisson says these are people who want to tell you what to believe.

What you need to remember,” the journalist said, “is that when interests are working this hard to shape your opinions, their true goal might just be to add another layer between you and the truth.”

Question authority. Analyze what a source is saying, including this source that you are reading. If you see an factual error, let us know.  We routinely challenge MHI, Clayton, et al to offer any fact or evidence based corrections.

Crickets. That speaks volumes.

Try to be objective, share that notion with your team mates that don’t already see what you get, and tell them to go where the evidence, money, and logic point.  As a related note, the industry obviously suffers from problematic reporting inside MHVille and aimed at it.  Both of those need to be proactively addressed, see the related reports, further below.

Stunning Degree of Corruption, Collusion, Manipulation, and Ignorance Threatens MHVille

August 24th, 2018 Comments off

StunningDegreofCorruptionCOllusionIgnoranceThreatensMHVille

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie.” – Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler’s minster of propaganda, per the Jewish Virtual Library, and citing ThinkExist.

Earlier this week, after the news of the Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen verdict and guilty pleas, The Drudge Report noted that the mainstream media had used the word “impeach” over 200 times in 24 hours.

There is no degree in medicine or psychology needed to realize that when something is repeated that often, in so short a time span, it has an impact on a significant part of the population.

There is no need to buy into a ‘conspiracy theory,’ because facts are facts. It’s about looking at the evidence dispassionately, not emotionally, because emotions are what’s often manipulated. Understanding the truth of an issue in doubt or controversy is about considering the evidence about an issue from several angles.  That’s how the truth is discovered in turbulent times.

The odds of impeaching Donald J. Trump are arguably low, because the constitutional requirements sets a two tier process, neither one of which is easy to meet. “At the federal level, Article I, Section 2, Clause 5 of the Constitution grants to the House of Representatives “the sole power of impeachment”, and Article I, Section 3, Clause 6 grants to the Senate “the sole Power to try all Impeachments,” per Wikipedia.

So in this case, the phrase “impeachment” is more about its usefulness as a political narrative tool. It is a rallying cry for those who lost the last election. Democrats, Republicans and all others are being asked to respond to the notion of impeachment in the upcoming midterms.

Stunning

Facts are facts no matter how often lies are repeated. The byline writer is an MD by training, and thus had to take psychology as part of the courses needed to obtain a medical degree. With that understanding, it is stunning to note that several notable attorneys, including Democratic supporter Alan Dershowitz, has cast doubt that any crime has been committed by the Donald J. Trump in the alleged payments – even if those payments to porn stars took place.

Attorney, author, radio and TV talker Mark Levin has said that an abuse of power has taken place. Why?  Because former Trump attorney Michael Cohen plead guilty to a crime that is in fact no crime at all.  That being so, it would directly reflect on high levels of the Department of Justice (DoJ) too. Those are views held by other attorneys, and of course, the other side has their taking heads too.

So, to discern reality, one must step back and reflect on the evidence and competing claims.

It was so-called “Russian collusion” that was the supposed predicate for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. Why did that fall into the background?  Simply put, no evidence exists for it.  All that exists are often repeated allegations, with no proof offered, other than a dicey dossier paid for in part by the Clinton campaign.

A juror in the Paul Manafort case, who admits she voted for Donald Trump, said Manafort was guilty of the tax related crimes he was accused of, but said she believed the matter only came to light because President Trump is the target. They want to get him any way that they can.

The mostly progressive voices on the compelling documentary video Shadows of Liberty, linked below, stressed the high degree of control of the news media in America by 6 major conglomerates. They decide what is news, said former CBS anchor Dan Rather and a host of others cited in the documentary video have said.

“Shadows of Liberty” Movie Introduction, Affordable Housing, and You

President Trump doesn’t say that all news in America is corrupted. But the president – and the White House press room, which supplies MHProNews with numerous daily updates – do say that significant portions of the media reflect a strong bias against him.

As if to prove the point, the Boston Globe organized over 300 newspapers to do editorials that say that the news media is not the “enemy of the people.” But what the president has clarified is that it is fake news that’s the enemy, and not all news is fake.

Deepa Kumar quote from from the thought-provoking video documenatary, Shadows of Liberty, posted on the page linked here.

No Choir Boy

The Access Hollywood/Billy Bush video in 2016 made it abundantly clear to Americans that candidate Donald J. Trump was not a choir boy. Evangelicals, blue collar, and others nevertheless turned out to vote for him by the tens of millions. Normally blue states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania flipped for Donald Trump, knowing about allegations very much in keeping with what porn star Stormy Daniels or others like her have more recently allege.

People voted to make Donald Trump President based upon his policies, and/or to oppose the policies of Secretary Hillary Clinton.

A massive smear campaign is clearly underway. It is not unlike the Billy Bush video of Donald Trump in 2016, hoping to separate the president from his supporters.  It is insignificant if the claims of Daniels – or if an army of hookers – stepped forward and proved their ‘relationships’ with candidate or citizen Trump.  Legal experts say that it is not illegal to pay someone to be quiet. All else is routinely a repeated smoke screen, advanced by those who have an anti-Trump agenda.

Note, this advice holds for MHVille trade media readers too. Thanks for more than doubling our already industry- leading readership in the last 12 months. Our thanks too for our supporters, who make this platform possible.

MHVille and Why it Matters

For MHVille:

  • S 2155 would never have taken place under Hillary Clinton, if she held true to her promises to defend Dodd-Frank and the CFPB.
  • Secretary Clinton would not have done the tax cuts.  Virtually every manufactured home industry business has benefited from that, as have the majority of workers.
  • It was candidate Trump who pledged – and has kept his word – that he would massively roll back regulations.  There was no such pledge by Clinton.  As Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and others are proving, if the GOP lost control of Congress, regulations could come roaring back with a vengeance.
  • Jobs in mining, energy, and manufacturing are returning under President Trump.  Then President Barack Obama mocked Mr. Trump about during the campaign, that those jobs and industries would never come back. Secretary Clinton doubled down on comments like “the deplorables.” She too spoke about jobs that would never come back, which are now, due to the 45th president’s leadership.

Certainly, even many Trump supporters are not comfortable with certain tweets and tactics.

But in spite of a historic blizzard of news coverage that is some 90 percent against him, POTUS Trump’s approval has been rising nationally. Black and other minority support has nearly doubled since he took office. Among the clear reasons why is the lowest unemployment levels in decades.  Business and consumer confidence alike have soared during his time in office.

Mr. Trump is a businessman, who comes from the housing and construction fields.  What more needs be said, is reflected by the MHARR video interview, shown below.  It must be emphasized for clarity, that MHARR takes no sides in political campaigns. They have no PAC, as MHI does.  So when prior MHARR President, now senior advisor, Danny Ghorbani speaks about the president and his administration in this short interview, that must be kept in mind.

The midterms are racing up. Congressional voting is just over two months away. The agenda-driven voices in the media apparently hope to smear the president, and suppress turnout among his supporters.

That’s a critical issue – what’s best for MHVille and the nation – that you and your peers must answer. That is what you and your circle of influence must decide before you vote, or sit on your buns come midterm Election Day.

Repeating a lie, or using an exaggerated narrative for an agenda, doesn’t make it true.

Impact of Fear – Manufactured Home Sales, Business, Investment, Zoning, Politics, Media, Manipulation, and You

January 12th, 2018 Comments off

Americans must recognize, says Harvard psychologist Susan David, that “A familiar story is not necessarily a truthful story.”

In “The Science of Fear-Mongering: How to Protect Your Mind from Demagogues,” Harvard psychologist Susan David explains “the dangers of fear-mongering, the questionable ethics of journalism in spreading hate politics, and the disturbing way that repetition wears down our brain’s resistance to fallacies and hate speech,” per Big Think’s YouTube post.

David notes that feelings of safety, right, comfort – their opposites – along with the role that repetition plays, are all part of the “the science of fear mongering.

What has arguably gone under-explored in the manufactured housing industry is the role that fear plays with:

  • Prospective buyers,
  • public officials (think, zoning – votes),
  • investors, business people (being in – or not in – ‘the group,’
  • media,
  • educators,
  • industry members themselves – what causes you or others to think and behave as you do,

plus all others.

Composite still from the video, posted below.

Susan David’s Video

David’s 8-minute video has a left-of-center slant that would be common among many in Harvard. With that caveat and bias in mind, she nevertheless makes important points for manufactured housing professionals to consider.

How is feared used to condition people, for-or-against something?

What role does propaganda play in fear?

Benson Demonstrates How “Propaganda Works” on “Most Americans”

Customers are often driven by a variety of fears.

For instance in sales, there’s the notion of the ‘fear of loss’ – rising interest rates, pricing, a closeout model, or that perfect vacant home-site are but some examples – that have often been used as a real or imagined pressure point to ‘close the deal.’

But among customers, there are other fears.

What about fear caused by the economy? Or how fear of “X” – fill in the blank for x – affect my job?  Will there be a war with North Korea, Red China, or Russia? Will terrorists strike?

Then there are also fears caused by social pressures, or safety concerns.

Those kinds of powerful emotional drivers are reasons why videos and articles can be useful in helping a customer overcome a false fear.  Facts – properly understood – can overcome fear. An example from MHLivingNews.com is posted below.  But there are hundreds of others that address specific issues, often from the vantage point of the home owner or an expert.

Fear can cause people to do – or not do – something that their normal value system would cause them to be inclined to do.  Pollsters, for example, recognized that a percentage of “the Trump voters would not always say what they believed. Isn’t that a social acceptance fear at work?

Is fear manifest in other ways within the manufactured housing industry?  Isn’t the only answer, yes?

David asks, “How do we thrive in a world where every which way we turn our fear is being activated by politicians, by the media and by the desperate events that are happening around us?”

Spotting fear, and recognizing techniques of manipulation are perhaps as or more important today than in years gone by.

Why?  Because when people are ‘busy,’ they often default into patterns – instead of questioning, based upon evidence, those patterns and beliefs.

What is really fascinating when we look at the brain research around fear is that our brains proxy anything that feels unfamiliar, incoherent or inaccessible as being unsafe,” says David.

There is fascinating research that shows that when people have lower levels of self-esteem and they are in a job in which they are recognized and promoted, that promotion can feel incoherent to the person with low self-esteem. They have low self-esteem and they might be used to and expecting to be treated badly. So what is fascinating is the results showing that when people are promoted when they have a lower levels of self-esteem they are more likely to leave their jobs,” the psychologist explains.

Fear is an incredibly, incredibly powerful force in our lives and our brains are fairly immature in assessing anything that feels slightly incoherent for unfamiliar as unsafe. What this might mean is that if you are used to hearing a story time and time again from a parent or from a partner about how you are not good enough, you are more likely to be drawn to that relationship because it feels familiar,” she says.

David adds that, “Fear has always had a hold on us, but never with such fervor.”

Media savvy professionals recognize that fear must be overcome.

But how often do professionals consider that habit combined with fear can be coercive?

What are the ways that fear and manipulation tactics may be used against you, your customers, or others that you know? We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)
