At 3:09 AM ET, Republican red was projected to carry a net pickup of at least 7 U.S. Senate seats, possibly as many as 9 once the dust settles in Alaska and Louisiana.

One of the lesser touted stories was the surge for Republicans in gubernatorial races, where tight races often tilted to the GOP.  A deep blue state such as Maryland, where President Barack Obama campaigned on behalf of Democrat Anthony Brown, lost to Larry Hogan (R). Equally blue Illinois saw businessman Bruce Rauner best incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn.

Republicans brought a wave of color and gender as well, with Tim Scott winning his previously appointed Senate seat, Joni Ernst winning in Iowa and even gay candidates winning under the GOP brand.

Among the subtexts to the night might be that Vice President’s Joe Biden saying that Independent Greg Orman would ‘be with them,’ led to a million robo-calls by Republican Pat Roberts quoting exactly that Biden phrase in what had previously been a tight race, as reflected by pre-election polls.
