Amazon-Berkshire Announcement – Emerging Factory-Building Elephant in the Room?

May 15th, 2019 Comments off

WarrenBuffettAmazonBerkshireAnnouncementEmergingFactoryBuildingElephantRoomManufacturedHomeMHProNews

There was no mention this evening of factory-home building when CNBC or some other mainstream business media reported that Berkshire Hathaway has taken a position valued at some $904 million dollars as of the close of the market on 5.15.2019.  But then most others aren’t as keen on factory-built housing, or as in tune with what an announcement like this might suggest for our industry.

First, let’s start with some pull quotes from left-of-center CNBC, plus their video.

  • Berkshire’s stake in Amazon was 483,300 shares at the end of the quarter ended March 31, according to a filing at the Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • The value of that stake is $904 million by the closing bell Wednesday.
  • Buffett first disclosed the new investment in Amazon to CNBC on May 2, though the size of the position was not previously reported to the public.

Buffett told CNBC on May 2, One of the fellows in the office that manage money … bought some Amazon, so it will show up in the 13F.”  Chairman Buffett was likely referring to lieutenants, Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, who each manage portfolios of more than $13 billion in equities for Berkshire.

Yeah, I’ve been a fan, and I’ve been an idiot for not buying” Amazon shares, Buffett said at the time. “But I want you to know it’s no personality changes taking place.”

Berkshire Hathaway’s report revealed an 18% increase in its J.P. Morgan Chase stake to 59.5 million shares, underscoring the Oracle of Omaha’s love of big financial institutions.

If one goes back to the announcement made the morning of President Donald J. Trump’s 2018 State of the Union (SOTU), Buffett, Amazon’s/Washington Post’s Jeff Bezos, and Chase’s Jaime Dimon’s healthcare initiative sent those stocks south.  There was speculation that the timing was in part a move to embarrass POTUS Trump, who had been bragging about the rising stock markets.

Buffett has long been a Trump critic, even before Mr. Trump’s 2015 announcement of what became a successful White House campaign.

Be that as it may, Amazon’s Alexa Fund invested in 2018 in Plant Prefab, a factory housing builder. With Berkshire’s Clayton Homes dominating HUD Code manufactured homes, and announcing even more prefabricated construction plans on their conventional housing side, there are reasons to be watchful how these developments play out over time.

Details Emerging on Amazon’s Plans for Plant PreFab Modular Home Investment

We’ll track these developments and report as warranted.

Sexting, Alice, Zhivago, Network, Culture, Mother’s Day, and Celebrating Manufactured Housing

May 12th, 2019 Comments off

SextingAliceZhivagoNetworkCultureMothersDayCelebratingManufacturedHousingMHProNews

For decades, Americans have been living a sort of “through the looking glass” from the pages of the novel, Alice in Wonderland.

Through the looking glass” is a metaphorical expression. It means: on the strange side, in the twilight zone, in a strange parallel world. It comes from the idea of Lewis Carol’s novel: “Through the LookingGlass“, and the strange and mysterious world Alice finds when she steps through a mirror,” per Quora.

Until fairly recently, without sex, there was no motherhood. To deny the power of sex is to deny the power of life and living. It should not be over nor under stated.

It was a fairly short time-frame from Dr. Zhivago (1965) being seen subtly under the sheets in that Hollywood blockbuster until the casual sex – and madness – of another hit movie, Network (1976).

If you don’t think culture or videos matter to Manufactured Housing professionals in the U.S. Canada – or even down under – ask a Millennial that watches Netflix’s Trailer Park Boys their feelings about manufactured homes. They’ll educate you in a snap.

Or ask some of the approaching 6 million who watched Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’s hit viral video, Mobile Homes – who laughed as they nodded their heads in agreement.

To be modestly successful in manufactured homes (MH), you can ignore culture and its impact. But to become wildly successful ethically and honorable in your market(s), I don’t see how you can grow your business to 10 or 20 times your current MH retail sales levels – which is doable, honestly – without understanding human nature, culture, and the levers that maneuver Western and American society.

It’s useful to embrace history, under whatever banner one names it.

Investors crave a high degree of certainty. Don’t ask me, ask Warren Buffett or other billionaires.

One question is, how is that ‘high degree of certainty’ being achieved in practice?

Jeff Bezos has been the world’s richest man, but sexting and related cost him his marriage and resulted in perhaps the most expensive divorce in history. That’s a small indication of the power of sex over even a wealthy, successful personality.

Has Bezos’ or Buffett’s sexual history kept the media from fawning over either man?

Hardly.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is the current Democratic front runner.  According to Real Clear Politics (RCP), he’s about 25 points ahead of Bernie Sanders. Let’s not quibble for the moment over how accurate – or not – such polling may be. Biden’s famously snuggled, hugged, kissed, and played with the hair of women he didn’t know well, or at all. That’s all on camera. Donald J. Trump, now President Trump, for years was a celebrated womanizer.  But he’s slammed by much of the media for similar behavior? Can you spell double-standards?

The point isn’t to elevate or excuse one over the other. Rather, it’s to reveal the disconnects and hypocrisy.

Looking back at old episodes of I Love Lucy, she and Desi slept in separate beds. How odd for a married couple, though it did – and still does – occur. Watch old Hollywood movies. Before Dr. Zhivago famously moved ever so little under the sheets with his paramour by his side in an adulterous affair, sexuality was just under the surface long before that ‘racy’ scene.

It’s one thing to understand human weaknesses and foibles, and another to celebrate or manipulate them. For example, some drug kingpins became wealthy celebrities. Behind a veneer of generosity to some, was ruthless murder and torture to enforce an organization that would have eventually killed a drug lord otherwise.

There are disconnects between the “me too” movement and the sexual revolution. We see on TV a female political candidate decrying unwanted sexual advances.  Meanwhile that same politico ignores the rape and predatory sexual behavior occurring daily south of the border as illegal immigration is encouraged by open border policies. One female candidate floated making prostitution legal nationally. It’s Alice peering through the looking glass. Darkly.

Politics and business intersect. Period. Don’t like it? Get over it. It is what it is.

Business and culture intersect. These first two intersections impact manufactured housing tremendously.

Religion and morality intersect with business too.

Those who protest that your or society’s moral views should not be imposed on them may well protest moments later if you threaten them with a gun or knife, demanding some or all they’ve worked for in life. Put differently, there are moral standards almost all agree are correct. Every law to some extent is a moral judgment.

America has been a social experiment from the days when the first settlers came here. They wanted religious, political, as well as economic freedom.  They knew what oppression was. They risked all to come to the shores of the first colonies on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Those early social experiments led to a revolution against England, their king, and crown authorized monopolies. The pre-revolutionary Boston Tea Party wasn’t just a tax protest, it could be viewed as a protest against the crown’s monopoly granted to that tea company.

What does this have to do with Mother’s Day?

Everything. At the center of society is the family. Without motherhood, there would be no next generation. Without singles or households, what housing would be needed or sold?

What’s wrong in America is that we don’t ask what’s right, to paraphrase G.K. Chesterton.

We need moral standards, even when we may fail to keep them. We’ve all been hypocrites about something. Let’s recognize that fact, then ask, how did we get into this present exciting yet vexing era?

There has long been those who’ve manipulated others through music, videos, literature, imagery, so-called education, finance, and government.

There are Ten Commandments that God gave humanity. Jews, Christians, Muslims, others largely agree on some variation of those ten laws. God didn’t make people robots, which lacked free will. If you’ve ever wondered why ‘so and so did such and such,’ and ‘why didn’t God stop it?’ The answer is simple. Free will. God respected us enough to give humans the ability to choose between what’s right and what’s wrong.

Our nation and much of Western society have undergone gut wrenching upheavals. Societal, cultural, governmental, business – and yes religious and moral forces – are coming to a head. We won’t speculate on what’s next.

What we can know is that God is good, patient, and merciful. Embracing truth is part of the solution. Motherhood was part of the mystery of the Creator’s plan.

America’s founding fathers were humans, imperfect as are we today. But they had a moral compass that complimented the economic, religious, and political vision. They knew no society could long endure absent religion and objective morality.

Relativism doesn’t work. Ultimately, relativism devolves into power struggles. The United States was predicated on an idealistic notion that government was to be subservient to the people, not the rulers of “We, the People.”

There can be a degree of fear or uncertainty in considering idealistic yet historic concepts. But let’s note that failure to ponder – and increasingly practice time-tested principles anew – is to condemn ourselves to a society that will finally break down in lawless chaos ruled by rival gangs. There are parts of the world that’s already the case. That’s not good for business, people, or anything else.

As a sinner myself, the point isn’t to lord one’s postured nobility over others. It is to understand what makes for a good and just society, and seek to live it personally.

Millions have the simple dream of earning an honest living, and at the of the day, returning to a home they call their own.  Millions of those homes were and can be built in a factory.

Millions want to enjoy the blessings of a family. Society is founded on such households.

What’s gone wrong in America can’t be summed up in 1400 words, or can it? We need to celebrate the good. We need to strive to minimize what’s wrong. We need to make home ownership easier in a sustainable fashion.

Those homes will include millions of moms, whom we should collectively celebrate today.

The laws needed by our manufactured home industry are already on the books. HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s speech linked below on manufactured housing and their value is a fine place to start. We need to enforce good, existing laws. We need to expose the corruption of those who’ve misled so many, hoping to make a dishonest buck.

Happy Mother’s Day.

With no further adieu, let’s look at the articles from the week that was.

YIMBY, Amazon backed Plant Prefab Introducing ADUs, Product Video

November 16th, 2018 Comments off

YIMBY-AmazonBackedPlantPrefabINtroducesADUsProductVideoDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Treehugger says, “Yes in my back yard” (YIMBY), “Yves Behar and Plant Prefab introduce ADUs.”

California recently signed into law the okay for a broader use of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).

The environmental focused publisher, says, “The reason prefabs make so much sense in the A.D.U. context is that the added construction is easy on neighborhoods and neighbors. It can take two, three years to build something, with all the noise and visual pollution. And wasted materials that come with that. But with the YB1, it takes about a month to build it in a factory and a day to install. It comes prewired with all your electrical, HVAC, appliances — everything is ready to go. Prefabs make it so much more accessible for people to add housing stock, and it’s so much cleaner.”

PLANTPreFabsAmazonTreehuggerManufacturedModularHomeIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

That’s an argument that factory-builders know well and embrace.

PLANTPreFabsAmazonTreehuggerManufacturedModularHomeIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsEXT2

Lloyd Alter, writing for Treehugger, said: “…in the comments, the usual objections come up: $480 per sq ft is $200 higher than a conventionally built custom home with nice finishes. Good idea, but it appears there is a high premium for these ADU’s.” Or, “Yet another toy for the rich with no practical basis in reality for the majority of people, and only those who live in the sunbelt and in wealthy enclaves.” Or, “This is beautiful and definitely solving a problem… for people with money. Not sure how it helps homelessness or people with less money.”

Alter then goes through his reasons for rebuffing some of those concerns. For the general public, Alter’s points are okay.

But for modular home builders, or especially for HUD Code manufactured home producers, it misses the tremendous value differential between conventional construction and manufactured housing.

‘Use Government to Handcuff Your Rivals, Clever’ – Stossel

November 14th, 2018 Comments off

UseGovernmentHandcuffYourRivalsCleverStosselManufacturedHousingIndustryDaiyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Still from video below, but the headline graphic is by MHProNews.

What’s the “Enemy of Capitalism?”  That’s a question that John Stossel asks in this thought-provoking video.

There are good reasons for taking a ‘wheat and chaff’ approach to information sourcing. Sometimes it will be the Washington Post, but at other times, it may be the Washington Examiner or the Hill. A progressive may be wrong on some topics but could be correct on another.  The same is true for a Democrat, libertarian, or a given Republican, etc.

MediaBiasChartSharylAttkissonLeftRightPostedDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

Full Measure’s Sharyl Attiksson’s media bias chart is useful in sorting out the agendas behind various headlines and news sources.

In a brand new video, John Stossel takes a look at the question, “who is the enemy of capitalism?”

The video opens with democratic socialist supporter Senator Bernie Sanders recent attack on: Amazon. Sanders said Amazon didn’t pay its workers enough and because of that, many qualified for government assistance.

Stossel build the narrative, one step at a time, until he gets to the headline statement, above.  So don’t bail 3 minutes into a video that is less than 7 minutes long, and has had 10x more views in a day than Clayton Homes’ image campaign video has had in a year.

EnemyofCapitalismJohnStosselFoxDaillyBusinessNewsMHproNews

To see our fact check of the Clayton image campaign, see the new report, linked here.

Stossel nails in a general way an issue that MHProNews has raised for years that is specifically impacts manufactured housing.  Namely, that Big Companies are using the levers of government power to outmaneuver, force out of business, or even gobble up smaller firms.

It’s a vexing pattern that goes beyond our industry, but must be grasped with open eyes by MH Professionals – including those who work for a giant company like Clayton. “The Enemies Within,” Pacific Freedom Foundation, Author Trevor Loudon

February 23rd, 2018 Comments off

TrevourLoudonTheEnemesWithinTrevorLoudonBookCoverGoodreadsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

I’m a political researcher from Christchurch New Zealand. I believe in freedom…” says author Trevor Loudon about himself.

Loudon’s book, “Barack Obama and the Enemies Within“ currently gets 4.1 stars from readers on Amazon.

His next book, “Enemies Within: Communists, Socialists and Progressives in the U.S. Congress,” enjoys a 4.4 star rating among Amazon readers. It is this second book, a whopping 700 page read, that the 78 minute video posted with this article is based upon.

The Enemies Within” is designed to show American voters exactly how modern communism works and how it impacts on your life, every single day. Just how do the communists win big on things like Obamacare and immigration “reform,” which go completely against the wishes of the American people?” – says the review on Goodreads.

Trevor Loudon’s research has been cited by Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, countless articles, blog posts and in books by well known authors Paul Kengor, Aaron Klein and Jerome Corsi. He has given countless radio interviews and addressed audiences in more than 30 states in his four tours of the United States,” per Goodreads.

TrevorLoudonSpeakingAtProIsrealRallyWashingtonDC588

Trevor Loudon speaks on internal subversion, communism and socialism, national security, culture and constitutional conservatism,” that review concludes.

Could your congressman pass an FBI security check? That’s the question anti-communist researcher, author, and now filmmaker Trevor Loudon from New Zealand poses in his documentary The Enemies Within,” writes Christian Gomez in the New American.

Based upon his second book, The Enemies Within: Communists, Socialists and Progressives in the U.S. Congress, Loudon’s film exposes the far-left and outright communist connections, as well as radical Islamic ties, of numerous Democratic members of Congress,” says Gomez.

The Daily Business News has done some basic background checks on this author and his video, as the above reflects.

The left-of-center Washington Post has a review by columnist Dana Milbank of Loudon’s Obama analysis that said in part, “The charges [against Obama] ranged from the absurd to the merely questionable.”

Keep in mind that Amazon’s Jeff Bezos own the Washington Post, and had Warren Buffett on their board of directors for 37 years, until he stepped down a few years ago.

To say it The Enemies Within is controversial would be accurate.  The interviews below contains clips from the full length movie, which is available on Amazon Prime and iTunes.

There are several facts known from other sources that readily confirm Loudon’s thesis.

For a documentary style video, it makes good use of numerous, short, hard-hitting interview and video clips, all of which naturally support Loudon’s premise. Several of those interviewed have expert level experience in American intelligence.

The Pacific Freedom Foundation’s (PFF)  LinkedIn Page reads in part, “The Pacific Freedom Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to unlocking the covert side of US and global politics.”

We want to expose those in American politics who are ideologically corrupt and not worthy of the public trust. We primarily focus on the backgrounds and records of American politicians who support progressives ideals rather than maintain our Constitutional government in its original intent and purpose as setforth by the Freedom fighters of yesteryear,” per the PFF LinkedIn page.  The video below is not the documentary, but is an in depth discussion by Loudon in front of a live audience.

Many of these are elected and appointed officials who those who follow American political and economic activities that you would or should know by name.

They influence or drive the policies that influence your business.

Instead of three thirty minute sit coms, or other television viewing, why not watch this video one evening?

You may not look at politics in America quite the same again.

Zappos Founder Lives in an Airstream

Airstream_Village__Downtown_Project__yahoo_dot_finance__credit__Tony_Hsieh_Las_VegasDespite having wealth estimated at $780 million, online shoe and apparel retailer Zappos’ founder, Tony Hsieh, lives in a 240 square foot Airstream in Airstream Village in downtown Las Vegas, a community of 20 Airstreams and 10 Tumbleweed tiny homes he spent $350 million to develop. The Downtown Project (DTP) he has funded with his own money is to rebuild downtown Las Vegas, the headquarters of Zappos, where his employees work, live and play.

Part of DTP includes a series of recycled shipping containers a few blocks from the Village, forming a container park for small businesses, as yahoo.finance tells MHProNews.

Hsieh likes the sense of community where he lives. “I love it at night here. There’s campfires going. All these lights … sometimes musicians playing music, just jamming together, people cooking. I really like the unpredictability and randomness of it,” he said.

Hsieh sold Zappos to Jeff Bezos of Amazon in 2009 for $1.2 billion with the understanding that Hsieh could continue to manage the company, as long as it performed financially, and also work on DTP. He moved out of his luxury condo in 2014 and into Airstream Village, where his minimalist lifestyle has helped him focus his creativity.

Airstream Village monthly rent is $1,200 which includes WI-FI and utilities for living in an Airstream or a 130 sq. ft. tiny home.

Hsieh shares his space with two alpacas, Marley and Triton, who have a pen next to his home, but sometimes roam the Village on their own. ##
