CityLabs Spotlights ROC USA’s Bright Communities Brand, Lessons for Manufactured Home Professionals, Investors

July 19th, 2018 No comments

Manufactured home communities have a long history of providing low-cost housing in the U.S., where residents drive their homes in, secure them, and pay a monthly rent to stay on the owner’s land. These homes are typically the least expensive option when it comes to unsubsidized housing, serving households with a median annual income of about $30,000,” wrote Hallie Golden, in a new article for CityLabs.

Golden – a freelance writer, who per LinkedIn does some work for the AP too – is the most recent to look at the topic of manufactured homes, land-lease communities, specifically through the lens of cooperatives as a form of resident owned communities (ROCs).

HallieGoldenReliefReporterAPAssociatedPressDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

Third party content shown under fair use guidelines.

Golden’s story – and the majority of others through the years in mainstream media and third-party research – is readily categorized as positive, at least for ROC USA. Here’s how Golden opened her report,

When a landlord sells a mobile home park1, it can upend an entire community. Through co-ops, residents are finding a way to stay where they live and control their rent costs.”

It’s frankly a common theme in academia, and in mainstream media reports.  That point about “insecurity” for manufactured home owners in a land-lease is often played up by Prosperity Now (formerly, CFED), or resident activist groups such as NMHOA, and MH Action.

Golden cites Jim Wallace, a resident in a community who she says is “now a 71-year-old retired manufacturing engineer.” “I was doing some pacing on the floor,” said Wallace, when the community he lived in for years was about to be sold by its owner.

I was doing some pacing on the floor,” said Wallace.

Per CityLab’s account, “Wallace and the other members of the 25-home community had a plan. For years, the residents had wrestled with the fact that they have little to no say in the park’s long-term future. So in July, they wrote a letter to the landlord, expressing their concern. “We wanted assurance that our homes would be safe for us to enjoy in the future,” said Katy Bowen, president of the Duvall Riverside Village’s board of directors and one of its residents. The next month, the landlord sent them a letter offering to sell them the property.”

They formed a co-op, got a loan, and bought the 4.5-acre land, about 25 miles northeast of Seattle, for $1.18 million,” said Golden. “With that, they officially became Duvall Riverside Village.”

Golden’s story references the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) on a factoid that’s likely accurate. Namely, that the average income of a mobile or manufactured home owner hovers around $30,000.

But her CityLab report also references some other claims, including from Apartment List, which published a report that’s a mixed bag of accurate and problematic data. Golden’s figure on the number of communities comports with no known source, so perhaps she split the difference between what MHI and a source like “Frank and Dave” use.  As she put it: “an increasing number of approximately 40,000 mobile home communities1 in the United States have opted to take landlords out of the equation.”

Frank Rolfe, Dave Reynolds, George Allen, Manufactured Home Community Controversy Continues

That may be technically true, but if someone reads that as if there is a wave of ROCs, that’s not true. ROC USA’s president, Paul Bradley, has told MHProNews that they can convert roughly 15 communities a year as they are currently configured.  Would they like to do more?  In time, of course.

By the way, Mike Bullard told MHProNews today that they attempt to educate those they speak to about the proper terminology.  He also said that crane’s are obviously rarely used in the moving of a HUD Code manufactured home.

Here’s part of how Golden reported, “Owners [of manufactured homes] also must be able to afford the $5,000 to $15,000 price tag that may be needed to move the structure. Bullard said the process involves a crane and a truck, and often additional vehicles to escort the oversize load.”

Why the ROC Articles Matter, Lessons Learned?

The industry faces a real image issue that MHI and thousands of others in our industry have arguably only put their toe in the water on addressing.

Consider the comment below, posted on Golden’s article:

Gary_Gilmore: The housing solution that no one wants. No developer wants this – no profit. No architect wants it – no glory. No neighbor wants this – too much drain on the tax base.”

Almost every word of the above is demonstrably inaccurate.  But there’s plenty of evidence that there are millions who believe similarly.  Until MHProNews posted a reply, that statement went unaddressed.  Why?

Moving on, ROC USA has for years had overwhelmingly positive media. While they are at times misunderstood within the industry, that’s perhaps due in part due to the action of groups apart from ROC – like NMHOA or MHAction. When they demand ROCs, people believe they must be in cahoots with Bradley’s group.

There’s evidence to the contrary, like Bradley’s reply to the rent control issue.  As the commentary linked below from Bradley to MHProNews reflects, his view on rent control is hardly the position of NMHOA or MH Action.

Fair and Balanced on CFED – plus – Another View On Rent Control

So beyond the industry, where some totally get Bradley and company’s vision, and others don’t (joke – welcome to that club), ROC USA is widely admired.  Try to find a negative article in mainstream media that includes ROC USA.

You’ll be hard pressed to do so.

ROC isn’t the only one that gets positive media, but consider how often the industry gets negative media. Each one of those stories – good, bad or meh – are wake-up calls for manufactured housing professionals.  Just consider the series of largely negative stories on Clayton Homes in the Seattle Times, Buzz Feed and others.  While Clayton gets positive media, those are often fawning fans of Buffett who are bragging about their latest acquisition of a site builder.

The bottom line is that ROC USA is a bright spot for the industry’s story, but they shouldn’t be the only one.  There are, as Bradley has told MHProNews, numbers of good community operators who safeguard resident interests.

Bradly has also encouraged that the industry clearly define land lease communities that protect resident tenancy, and those who may sell out for redevelopment.

Promoting Manufactured Home Ownership – With “Only 1 in 100 Eaten by a Lion”

It’s the kind of advice that professionals should consider, because it comes from a voice that has carved a positive name for their brand in an often unjustly dismissed industry. Perhaps the new communities association that is being formed will take on this issue? Doing so well is arguably worth tens of billions of dollars in more revenue for the industry every year.  “We Provide, You Decide.” © ##

Investors, Heartbroken Home Owners, Site Building Giant DR Horton, and Manufactured Housing

Photo of a D.R. Horton Home model in MD.

Investors: D.R. Horton, Inc., America’s Builder, has been the largest homebuilder by volume in the United States for thirteen consecutive years,” says the publicly-traded company’s website.

Their website provided the following data, linked here.  The screen capture below is just part of that fact sheet.

DRHortonFactSheetPostedManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHpronews

Click here or the image above to download the full size fact sheet.

Horton sells more than half the total number of housing units annually sold by the entire manufactured housing industry, and obviously at a far higher average price-point.

A report in Oct 2017, said their sales total in 2016 was $12.3 billion in revenues.

That’s more than double the retail sales total for all of the HUD Code manufactured homes sold in 2017 by the manufactured housing (MH) industry. The latest MH data can be reviewed later, at the link below.

Manufactured Home Shipments, State by State Breakdown, May 2018 Official HUD Data

Why does any of this matter to MHVille?

Fair question, let’s look.

The Site Built Housing Industry Reality Check  #1

ABC News did the following exposé of the host of problems found in the conventional housing industry.

This isn’t new, there are numerous other similar reports.  Check out this short one by a local news report.

These are similar to the kinds of problems that caused the old pre-HUD Code mobile home industry’s leaders to turn to the federal government and ask for federal standards.  Problematic pre-HUD Code mobile home builders in the early 1970s caused the builders of better homes NOT to want to be branded by those with a poor image.

The ‘quality crisis’ of the late 1960s and early 1970s led to exposés by CBS’ 60 Minutes and others.  That threatened the credibility of the then-booming mobile home business.  Are site builders heading toward a similar crisis? And will manufactured home producers, marketers and sellers be able to tap into those concerns?

MobileHomeShipmentsManufacturedHomeShipmentChartMHIAShipmentsMHIndustryChampionSkylineHUDCodeDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

What was accomplished previously in sustainable shipment levels, can clearly be done again.

D.R. Horton is far from alone in facing such concerns among conventional, on-site builders.  There have been numerous websites over the years – example, http://www.kbhomesleak.com/kb-home-sucks-1-gone/ – that spotlight these kinds of problems with other stick builders.

The point here isn’t to trash D. R. Horton, nor any other, conventional housing builders.

Rather, it is to make a few points similar to what the National Association of Home Builder (NAHB) official interviewed in the ABC News video above made.

Namely, that housing isn’t perfect.

No product is, and that includes manufactured homes.

So why is it that conventional housing is roaring, and manufactured home shipments are snoring?

ConstructionofModestsizedHomesRemainsLimitedHarvardJCHS2018ManufacturedModularHousingDailyBuisnessNewsMHPronEws

The only JCHS graphic that specifically mentions manufactured housing. To see our exclusive review of the Harvard’s “State of the Nation’s Housing in 2018, click here or the graphic above.

Part of the beauty of manufactured homes is that there are third-party inspections. Those avoid many of the kinds of problems being identified by site builders, noted in the videos above.

HUD Code manufactured housing consumers can take comfort in that inspection process. Furthermore, the dispute resolution process that is part of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA) gives consumers a level of confidence that is frankly not found in the conventional housing world.  The MHIA of 2000 is found in the article linked below, along with other information that can be read later for greater depth of understanding on a related topic.

Two Great Laws Already on the Books NOW,  Can Unlock Billion$ Annually for Manufactured Housing Industry Businesse$, Investor$

Unlike many conventional builders, manufactured home producers are all third-party inspected. And the review process – per HUD data reveals – so few consumer complaints that it should make all manufactured home sellers proud.

The article from MHLivingNews last year spotlighted the relatively few numbers of dispute resolution complaints on HUD Code homes.

Federal Data Spotlights Manufactured Home Industry Quality, Regulatory Questions

There are so many ways to make the points to consumers that today’s manufactured homes are a good investment.

It should be noted that Horton Homes, a manufactured housing company that was based in Georgia, was not connected with D.R. Horton.

Per References for Businesses, “…the publicly-owned D. R. Horton construction firm, based in Dallas, Texas, is an entirely different company…Horton [Homes] had played a part in improving the industry’s prestige, however. For years, jokes had persisted about manufactured housing–or rather trailers, sometimes nicknamed “tornado bait.” The homes had been considered to be shoddy, unattractive, substandard, and (in the case of a tornado or even of high winds) unsafe. Starting in the 1970s, however, that began to change. In June 1976, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) set new safety standards for mobile home construction. In the wake of hurricanes Hugo (1989) and Andrew (1992), HUD increased its requirements, declaring that manufactured homes should be able to withstand winds of 110 m.p.h. Horton [Industries] decided that his own product should meet even higher standards, and in 1997 the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported that some Horton Homes could sustain winds of 135 m.p.h.”

As an interesting side-note, Texas-based Legacy Housing, Inc. states that it purchased Horton Industries manufactured housing production facilities in Eatonton, GA in a January 2016 statement.

The Stick-Builder Horton Website Says the Following

About D.R. Horton, Inc.

D.R. Horton, Inc., America’s Builder, has been the largest homebuilder by volume in the United States for sixteen consecutive years. Founded in 1978 in Fort Worth, Texas, D.R. Horton has operations in 79 markets in 26 states across the United States and closed 48,731 homes in the twelve-month period ended March 31, 2018. The Company is engaged in the construction and sale of high-quality homes through its diverse brand portfolio that includes D.R. Horton, Emerald Homes, Express Homes and Freedom Homes ranging from $100,000 to over $1,000,000. D.R. Horton also provides mortgage financing and title services for homebuyers through its mortgage and title subsidiaries.”

The D. R. Horton Takeaways for Manufactured Housing?

There are numerous top-line takeaways for manufactured housing in the D. R. Horton story. The Daily Business News on MHProNews will point to only one this morning.  It’s this.  There is a need for all true leaders in the manufactured home industry to stand up and fight for the reputation of their industry.

D. R. Horton proves you can have significant issues, and still be wildly more successful than those in our industry are today. D. R. Horton’s quality concerns arguably dwarf those of manufactured housing. D.R. Horton aggressively markets their product.

If that is obviously so, then how is it that on something as apparently simple as the use of proper terminology about manufactured homes, the MH Industry can’t get the media to get that right?  How can it be that 42 years after the first HUD Code homes were built, that the industry’s big corporate leaders can’t get many in the media to use the correct nomenclature?

“I Hate Politics!” – Bedminster Watch, and Manufactured Housing Shipments

June 30th, 2018 Comments off

IHatePoliticsBedminsterWatchManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsPixabayLogos

I hate politics,” say millions, including some industry professionals. “I hate history,” say others, who simply don’t get it. That’s music to the ears of savvy politicians, and even some businesses and investors, who know that historic insights and political influence can be worth millions to billions annually.

That “I hate politics and history” also begs for a response, because those who loathe those two topics could legitimately benefit, given the proper understanding.

Why do politics or history matter to manufactured housing professionals?

For the thousands who logon daily to read MHProNews, they instinctively know that local, state or federal policies – which involves politics – are a key to unlocking hundreds of thousands of more new manufactured home sales annually.

The evidence from linked reports at the end of this column suggests that’s not hyperbole.

Taking the “wheat and chaff” approach to everyone, every organization or every topic is how one can learn and benefit from even controversial people or organizations.

The Daily Business News will succinctly make the point about history and politics with two controversial figures who are widely known in America and in the manufactured housing industry.

The first is Warren Buffett. One wheat takeaway is the fact that Buffett says he spends 5 to 6 hours a day reading. Much of his reading relates to business history and politics, as that may relate to his business interests.  Buffett’s reading for understanding is what he says gives him a great advantage, one that CNBC noted that almost anyone could do too.

Be you a Donald Trump fan or not, the controversial president is likewise correct when he said that it ‘pays to know everything you can about the issues that impact your business.’  Again, that’s politics and history too.

Two highly successful men, two distinctly different styles and politics, and both embrace political and historically significant issuesThat’s wheat.

Be it:

   zoning,

   Dodd-Frank,

   rent-control,

   ObamaCare,

   property rights,

   privacy,

or a range of political or judicial issues,

politics and who sits on the bench are important topics that every prudent manufactured housing industry pro should want to know about.

Politics and the law impacts your business daily.

Failures to engage on those issues only guarantees more of the same. For America and our industry to progress, thoughtful understanding is required.

Importance of Clear-Eyed Understanding

Often, only the history of an issue can unlock the underlying understanding necessary to advance on something critical for profitable progress.

Once clarity exists on hot topics involving politics or history, then those insights can be more effectively and efficiently dealt with. As the best-selling  7 Habits of Highly Successful People author Stephen Covey said, one must seek first to understand, then to be understood.

The7HabitsOfHighlySuccessfulPeopleSnapshotEditionStephenCoveyManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

All 7 habits are pillars for success, but today’s spotlight for this post is habit #5.

Once there is an underlying understanding, then that ought to be shared as needed with one’s circle of influence.

Even if clarity on an issue doesn’t yet exist, asking others you know about that topic can prove useful. That can be as easy as sending a link about an article via a message, and asking for feedback from your peers on the political, legal, or historical topic. See what they say or think. Then, whatever they say, for even further understanding, ask, help me to better understand, why do you think or say that?’

The Investment of Time

There may be a small percentage of individuals who can only spare 30 minutes in daily reading about their industry here on MHProNews. But if each post or article is carefully examined, tens of thousands could be learning more, to earn more. Each subject published is curated with the industry professional, advocates, or investor in mind.

There are no throw away topics on MHLivingNews.com, nor on MHProNews.com. Our view or understanding may evolve on an issue, but that’s also a reason why history matters. Thinkers ask, ‘why was there an evolution on that issue?’

Seeking understanding is a key that all motivated and great performers in any profession seek.

A Competitor Said

A few weeks ago, a competitor messaged to say that while ‘onlyMHProNews is covering certain hot-button or controversial manufactured home industry issues, he said that a thousand pros are discussing those same topics.

It was a backhand compliment, as he admits he won’t touch the same issues raised on the Daily Business News or elsewhere on the industry’s largest and most popular trade media site.

But what that competitor may not realize is that it’s more than “a 1,000,” it’s thousands daily. For an industry of the modest size of manufactured housing, it’s an achievement.  But the purpose here is to support the growth of the industry, so that tens of thousands more are proudly serving well in this crucial profession.

The reason so many industry pros read here is we curate meaty, useful topics for industry professionals to chew on. Want muscle?  Get some intellectual protein here.

Part of the proof comes from professionals who may agree or disagree on an issue, but they come daily to MHProNews either way. An industry attorney, not the one that will be quoted below, called recently to say that he realized after reading several articles on the same subject, that our motivation was sincere.

That’s a long way to set the table for what we’re dubbing, Bedford Watch.”  But we teed it up a step-at-a-time, because we seek to engage ever more deeply with you, our readers, in a meaningful way. The goal, once more, is to fuel industry growth.  The industry’s success is our mutual victory, as the 7 Habits calls “think win-win.”

Bedford Watch

The President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump will reportedly be meeting at his Bedford, NJ property meeting with some of his short list for potential nominees for the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS).

There are informed sources that tell the Daily Business News why they think that nominating the “right” justice could be a sea change.

Other sources thing that one or more manufactured housing related issues will be heard by the Supreme Court in the next few years. The article linked below can be read later, for greater understanding.

Life, Liberty, Property – Supreme Court – and Manufactured Housing

Consider what Kurt Kelley, a long-time periodic contributor to MHProNews, and well-known industry attorney from Texas, had to say about the importance of the replacement of retiring Justice Anthony “Tony” Kennedy.

donaldtrumpnominatesbencarsonashousingsecretarycreditmhpronews2-postedtothedailybusinessnewsmhpronewsmhlivingnews

Kurt Kelley. Credit: MHProNews.

Predictability in law is the key to a prosperous Republic.  Laws must be interpreted based on the language in them first and foremost. Only, when the language is unclear, should a judge seek evidence on related legislative discourse and legislative intent at the time the law was passed to help interpret it.  Otherwise, law risks becoming whatever a particular Judge or powerful person/group wants it to be,” Kelley said.

This was the consistent judicial philosophy of former Justice Antonin Scalia, and often adopted by Justice Kennedy,” Kelley noted. Note the attorney’s nuance on Kennedy?

Seeking Justices who interpret the laws based on their personal conclusion of what culture wants or what one Legislator said about a law, or what the law means in another country, results in the creation of different law created by the Judicial Branch, the branch of government neither elected by nor accountable to the people.”

Kelly shared a recent example of a hot-button topic.

Supreme Court “Justice Sotomayor’s recent dissenting opinion regarding the “President Trump Travel Ban” is an example of the danger of violating Scalia’s decision formula.  She [Sotomayor] based her emotional opinion on what she viewed as President Trump’s intent as evidenced by select things President Trump said while campaigning, versus what the law specifically said in plain English.  Justice Sotomayor concluded the law was a ban on all Muslims entering the United States.  However, the “Trump Travel Ban” neither states this nor is it applied in such fashion by Border Control.”

It’s a well reasoned statement intended for our publication’s audience, from a thoughtful and successful manufactured housing industry professional.  You can see the unedited comments from Kelly at the link below.

The Importance for Businesses and Investors in Manufactured Housing for Selecting the Next Supreme Court Justice

It’s an example of fine wheat that any industry pro can embrace.

SeparateWheatfromChaffValuablefromWorthlessDictionaryManufacturedHOusingINdsutryDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

It’s a valuable principle that can be applied to anybody, or any group.

And it deals with politics and history, the latter of which is what every legal case must study.  Sometimes, by increasing one’s understanding, and embracing what one thought they hated – like politics and history – a surprising and beneficial outcome can result.

MHProNews will continue to bring Daily Business News readers curated, thought-provoking comments, columns, and commentary that prudent professionals can benefit from. UMH CEO Sam Landy Touts and Tempers Manufactured Home Operation’s Expectations

UMH Properties (UMH:NYSE) has both touted and tempered the results and expectations that investors may have with respect to one of the largest players in the manufactured home community (MHC) sector.

To provide a balanced view of the latest reports on the manufactured home (MH) community REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) – UMH Properties – to MH Industry Professionals and investors, one must take a step back and establish some context.

The Daily Business News is the only MH Industry trade media that tracks their and other stocks connected to manufactured homes.  We’ve done so for years. The closing numbers on the UMH stock last night are linked here.

So MHProNews and MHLivingNews.com has directly engaged with UMH Properties for years, as well as tracked reports about them by others.  MHProNews has interviewed UMH President Sam Landy a number of times.

The videos posted are both from 2017, but are revealing and relevant precisely as background.  They reflect their leadership’s thinking and company facts in brief.

MHProNews will follow up in the near term with a deeper data dive into UMH, and what that tells us about the trends in manufactured housing in general, as well as in the community sector.

ECN Triad Financial Services – Fascinating Facts, Manufactured Home Industry Professionals, Investors

Triad Financial Services is now part of Canadian based ECN Capital, a publicly traded company, as the Daily Business News has previously reported.

ECN/Triad produced a power point designed for investors.

Three of those slides have been published on MHLivingNews, as part of a broader report for savvy shoppers of manufactured homes.

That MHLivingNews report is linked below.  It includes a video produced for the FMHA, which thousands of industry professionals should also find of interest.

Those ECN Triad slides are posted below, because they are useful to the industry’s understanding of its customer base.

The credit quality attracted by Triad is similar to that of conventional housing buyers, perhaps slightly better. This is good news for the industry and its investors. It should be eye-opening for those who struggle to get 600 credit score buyers.

Fishing in the Right Pond’

As Credit Human’s Barry Noffsinger said in the 16 minute video posted above, the better credit scores are buying site built houses, but Triad, Credit Human and others demonstrate that they routinely make loans to that same credit profile.

The industry can be proud of loans made that lead customers with problematic credit histories into successful becoming home owners.  That’s a big market.

But the largest market, as Noffsinger and NAR research alike point out, are those site built buyers.

Learning how to attract those buyers is a key to advancing the industry retailers, communities and developers in local market(s) to its potential.   ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Manufactured Housing’s Latest Production Stats, Import for Industry, Investors

January 8th, 2018 Comments off

ManufacturedHousingIndustryProductionNewHomeShipmentsFromMHARR525x262

The following press release was provided to the Daily Business News, which will be followed by a brief analysis and commentary, with some related links.

MANUFACTURED HOUSING PRODUCTION UP IN NOVEMBER 2017

Washington, D.C., January 5, 2018 – The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) reports that according to official statistics compiled on behalf of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), year-over-year manufactured housing industry production grew once again during November 2017. Just-released statistics indicate that HUD Code manufacturers produced 8,602 homes in November 2017, a 21.1% increase over the 7,098 HUD Code homes produced during November 2016. Cumulative industry production for 2017 now totals 85,657 homes, a 15.5% increase over the 74,141 HUD Code homes produced over the same period in 2016.

A further analysis of the official industry statistics shows that the top ten shipment states from the beginning of the industry production rebound in August 2011 through November 2017  — with cumulative, monthly, current year (2017) and prior year (2016) shipments per category as indicated — are:

The industry needs to look at such statistics through a dual lens.

First, it naturally a good thing that the industry is witnessing rising shipments since it hit bottom in 2009.

Second, the industry is only scratching the surface of its potential.

If the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) had the visions and solutions that they claim, would the industry have experienced the kind of slides and slow recovery witnessed since 1998?

Historically and in the future, the industry did more, and could do roughly 10 times (+/-) better than it currently is in terms of new home sales.

NAR says there are 8 million new housing units needed. Site builders can achieve the needed numbers, but factory builders – given the vision and commitments needed – can. Credits, MHI, Cavco.

With over 8 million new housing units needed now, and conventional construction unable to meet those needs in terns of speed, price, quality and volume, investors ought to be salivating of the potential in manufactured housing.

At the time Belsky made this prediction, manufactured homes (MH) were selling over 250,000 new units per year. This year, MH won’t reach 40 percent of that total. What happened?

Yes.

As the maxim goes, “Readers are leaders.”  It’s simple, proven, and profound.

Joe Kelly is the Executive Director if the Iowa Manufactured Housing Association. He’s an RV MH Hall of Fame inductee.

Kelly has described this pro-industry, pro-consumer trade publication “like a well-stocked buffet…” of relevant information to manufactured housing (MH) businesses, professionals, and investors.

A buffet is a system of serving meals in which food is placed in a public area where the diners generally serve themselves,” says Wikipedia.

Troubling New Study Reveals a Millennial Trend, Business, Economic, Political Impact

November 15th, 2017 Comments off

SocialismScreensWomanLookingDailyBusinessNesMHProNewsTruth can be taught and caught.

But so too can error, delusions, deceptions, and lies.

People will believe a big lie sooner than a little one, and if you repeat it frequently enough, people will sooner or later believe it,” said Walter C. Langer, a psychoanalyst.  That observation of Langer’s is very much in keeping with tenants of the propagandists who caused the rise of National Socialists – the Nazis – as well as of communist leaders, like Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, and others.

MHProNews periodically hears and receives unsolicited comments about millennials and their attitudes on issues that impact their work, views and voting.

It’s an issue in the minds of many in management, employers and owners.

Also important, how do people who don’t grasp “the American way” discover the American Dream, including home ownership?  How do those who misunderstand concepts such as free enterprise, and private property respond to policies that may oppose that system and those rights?

HalfMillennialsCorrectlyDefineCapitalismYouGovVictimsOfCommunismManufacturedHomeProfessionalNewsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

A new survey performed by YouGov reveals that some 44 percent of Millennials accept socialism, slightly more than those who favor capitalism.

While MHProNews believes that the better term to use is free enterprise as opposed to capitalism – because the term “capitalist” was coined by socialist Karl Marx, and thus plays into their narrative – nevertheless the trend ought to be a concern.

Nor are they alone in holding that or other troubling views.  The study was commissioned by the Victims of Communism, a non-profit group.  It’s called their “Annual Report of U.S. Attitudes Toward Socialism.”

AmericansDividedOnEconomicSystemYouGovVictimsOfCommunismManufacturedHomeProfessionalNewsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews720

In a release to MHProNews, here are some of that group’s top-line discoveries.

socialismCommunismYouGovVictimsOfCommunismManufacturedHomeProfessionalNewsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews720

Screen capture from the full survey, a handy download that could be shared at at team meeting, or for individual reading.

Communism was and is still a problem—up 5% from 2016.

Americans still have a lot to learn about communism 5 7 in 10 Americans either don’t know the definition of communism or misidentify it.

8in10RichDivideSeriousYouGovVictimsOfCommunismManufacturedHomeProfessionalNewsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews

The solution to the divide is more opportunity, not less. See video, below.

7 out of 10 underestimate number killed by communism.  It should be noted that a university researcher in Hawaii has published on a related topic, and he found that those that died under godless Nazi or communist systems far outweighed all those that died in so-called religious wars.

AmericansDividedOnEconomicSystemYouGovVictimsOfCommunismManufacturedHomeProfessionalNewsDailyBusinessNewsMHProNewsGraphic720

Is something happening in Venezuela? 6 in 10 are unfamiliar with Nicolás Maduro.

Communist leaders are cited as heroes to their countries by 10-20% of Americans.

The entire survey can be downloaded at this link here.

Why Should Business or Investment Professionals be Concerned?

Among the elements of concern that should be of concern to business professionals and politicos are points like these.

Millennials, per the YouGov research, while increasingly understanding of ills of communism, have a disconnect between communism and socialism.  More are willing to opt for socialist nation than a free enterprise based economy.  For those who believe that government is the solution for anything, the very issues – such as affordable housing, that free enterprise is proven for centuries is the best solution – will only increase.

Will Various PreFab, Factory Built Homes Become Los Angeles’ Affordable Housing Solution?

Thus, is it any surprise that so many millennials were willing to support Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic race for their presidential nominee?

America, Manufactured Housing & Debate Over Minimum Wage$

While the Donna Brazile book bruhaha has underscored the “rigged’ nature of that contest, perhaps equally troubling for business professionals and investors is this.  With millions of millennials embracing socialistic concepts, and given their growing influence at the ballot, could the day come that they vote ever more socialists into office?

“Hacks” – Explosive 2016 Campaign Claims by Former DNC Chair, Donna Brazile

Considering what took place in Venezuela, which a decade ago was a relatively prosperous nation, could that happen in America?

arutherBrooksPraegerUMythsLiesCapitalismManufacturedHousingINdustryResearchDataReportsMHProNews

MHProNews intended to continue to develop the industry’s first and still best professional resource that identifies opportunities, doesn’t ignore problem areas, while promoting common-sense solutions. Still from the video below.

The Republic of California…and a Direct MH Connection

An industry professional with deep ties to the community sector of manufactured homes said this to MHProNews in a recently emailed statement. “California does not believe in property rights, plain and simple. We want your single family home rezoned multifamily, so you can’t rebuild your dream home. What’s yours is mine what’s mine is mine.”

Indeed, others in various parts of the country have told MHProNews something similar about their difficulties with local officials, and not always from so-called blue states.

Solutions?

If the roots of the problem are misinformation, isn’t the only solution good information?

The parent company to MHProNews did a test, by hiring a millennial who was a Bernie Sanders supporter. While that person ultimately didn’t work out as a team member, by providing that person who specific reading and viewing assignments, several mistaken economic and political notions where significantly modified.

That person’s work product also improved as a result.

Just as many employers are finding it necessary to do remedial education and training, perhaps the same needs to be done for those workers who may hold to such demonstrably mistaken views.

MHProNews began a periodic series of reports some time ago that focused on general economic, political and other issues – for example, the minimum wage – and how that actually works in practice.

Only understanding and clear thinking can counteract propaganda and deception. Truth can and should prevail, but it will do so only if it is passed on, person to person. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)
