The Best Medicine, “Honey, I Forget to Duck,” One Liners from the “Great Communicator”

May 22nd, 2019 Comments off

The issues facing our nation and industry are serious ones.  Therefore, there are times that a little humor is useful to lighten the mood.

As a history buff, it is a pleasure to ponder chief executives of the past, and see what might be learned.  There are those who compare the 40th President, Ronald Reagan, with the 45th President, Donald J. Trump.

While there are parallels – some that millions apparently miss – there are clear and sharp differences, as ‘never-Trumpers’ like to stress.

But the times are frankly different, and the focus this evening is what Reader’s Digest long called, ‘the best medicine,’ humor.

CBS Sunday Morning published “Ronald Reagan’s one-liners” during the Obama Administration.  It has had 1,989,687 views since July 20, 2014, almost 5 years.

The likes outshine the thumbs down on this video below by a ratio of 42 to 1.

At the end of a long day of meetings, reports, phone calls, messages, media, fact-checks, analysis and drama…

…some-one liners from the 40th president seemed like just the ticket.  Oh, by the way, HUD Code manufactured home shipments in those years were more than double what they have been averaging in recent years.

From Live About we have these quotes, from President Ronald Reagan.

  • “My fellow Americans. I’m pleased to announce that I’ve signed legislation outlawing the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in five minutes.” – joking during a mike check before his Saturday radio broadcast
  • “It’s true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?”
  • “I hope you’re all Republicans.” -speaking to surgeons as he entered the operating room following a 1981 assassination attempt
  • “Honey, I forgot to duck.” -to his wife, Nancy, after surviving the assassination attempt
  • “I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself.
  • “I have left orders to be awakened at any time in case of national emergency—even if I’m in a Cabinet meeting.”
  • “Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.”
  • “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.'”
  • “Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.’ And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.”

No inferences should be drawn from this report, other than laughter can be good medicine and inspirational phrases have the power to be uplifting.

For baseball fans, you can also infer that a change up pitch can be useful too.

We’ll get back to the serious side of our industry and related tomorrow.

But tonight, let’s add one more short video clip to say ‘happy trails’ and turn to Reagan’s 1940 era movie about football star, Knute Rockne: All American (1940), as we salute the ideal that our industry needs — of “Win One For The Gipper.”

2017 Bi-Partisan Political Cartoons in Review (Note: Insightful, Satire, Tragic, Humor…)

December 29th, 2017 Comments off

Stating the obvious brings often clarity to an issue. Cartoonists are akin to others in the media in this respect.  They typically have a left-or-right of center tilt, or agenda.

13 ½ months ago, some never believed that Donald J. Trump could win the race for the White House, much less be sworn in as the 45th president.

Tens of millions expected Secretary Hillary Clinton to be inaugurated instead.

Obviously, some of the smartest, and most successful professionals and experts were just flat wrong.

Before and after the Trump Campaign’s upset victory, there were voices that predicted economic meltdown, doom, and gloom.

As part of the Daily Business News’ coverage of “News Through the Lens of Manufactured Housing,” © we’ve reported both sides, and have since documented that those naysayers have been proven wrong. The economy under president Trump is the best it has been in some cases in over 10 to 15 years or more.

Some of his opponents have called the president a tyrant, or a would-be dictator. Perhaps they are just using an attack on the person, an old debaters trick.  Or perhaps theyn’t thinking about the fact that every regulation President Trump cuts is reducing federal power, and thus his own power as the chief executive.

Agree or disagree, but some observers believe the Democrats and anti-Trump voices in the GOP resist precisely because they are afraid his economic and political agenda will succeed and be good for the nation and the vast majority of the American people.

Manufactured housing’s biggest challenges could be summed up in these words:

Image/Education/Public Perceptions.
Corruption/Monopolies/Improper Vision
for the industry and its potential.

With those thoughts in mind, and looking at the candidates in the 2016 field, editorially, we supported now President Donald J. Trump.

We did so believing pre-election that Donald J. Trump would be willing to take on the regulatory and other challenges.  By contrast, we also believed that Secretary Hillary Clinton would keep the status quo of the past decade plus.

Someone can laugh, but still disagree with the premise of a cartoon. Among the demonstrably (false) claims against the 45th president is that he’s a power-hungry tyrant. In business, he had capable people, and delegated authority. He’s doing so in operating the federal government too. That doesn’t mean he’s hands off, it means he gets expert or good counsel, and then makes decisions.

Manufactured housing (MH) has been steadily rising for years, but is still struggling compared to its historic levels and current potential.  Not always with MH in mind, but the forces inside and outside of manufactured housing that have held the industry back have very much worked to keep the status quo going.

What happens in D.C., in state and local markets politically and economically absolutely impacts the factory built home industry in general, and the HUD Code manufactured home industry in particular.

So, look for continued coverage in 2018 of the newsmakers and events that frame the landscape that limits – or gives more freedom – to HUD Code manufactured homes.

What’s the GOP description for the Democrats? Tax and spend. Was it hypocrisy for Democrats to complain about $1.5 trillion added to the deficit, when 10 trillion has been added in the 8 years of the Obama Presidency?

Look too for more periodic cartoon features, to help make pithy and light-hearted points that make people…

MHProNews reviews news from across the left-right media divide. Under reported in much of the left-of-center media is the speed with which ISIS has been crushed in Iraq and Syria, since President Trump gave the generals more latitude in the rules of engagement. ISIS has reportedly lost over 95% of their territory in those two countries in about 6 months. They’re still a threat, because they’re in dozens of nations globally. But, the savings in life, limb, and costs will quickly add up.

Because as Zig Ziglar observed, the first step to solving a problem is to first admit that a problem exists.

Or as business guru Steven Covey noted in his famous 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, “Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood.” Understanding and that open minded-search for the truth are crucial for sustained success in any profession, including factory-built homes.

FYI, for those who think the sexual harassment issue might be used against President Trump as it was against Al Franken, Roy Moore, or dozens of others – there’s a difference. The Americans who voted for the president knew of the allegations when they cast their ballots.

The True Meaning of the Word, Radical

Some misuse or misunderstand the meaning of the word, radical.  It comes from the word root, in Latin, radix – and the meaning is to get to the root cause of an issue or problem.

Instead of mowing weeds, and watching them spring up, or ignoring the weeds, and using wishful thinking, MHProNews has set out to get to the root issues that have limited the industry, and then to provide the solutions for that root issue.

Steve Bannon emerged in 2016 and 2017 as a major pro-Trump power player, shaking up the GOP and Dems alike. He came up short on the Roy Moore campaign, but if anyone thinks that’s the end, they don’t know Bannon. He’s a never quit, laser-focused-on-winning kind of man.  He’s media savvy, professionally successful, and has rebuked the left’s alt-right label with support from notables like Democratic Harvard Law professor emeritus, Alan Dershowitz.

This has been, and remains, the runaway # 1 trade publication in all of manufactured housing.

Attendance at global warming movies has dropped. Millennials – who often believe in ‘climate change’ admit in polls to be unwilling to pay much for fighting it. POTUS Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate deal, saying it was bad for American workers. He’s tweeted today about the record snowfall in parts of the U.S.
