“…the Water’s Edge”

June 29th, 2019 Comments off

The 1980s was the first full decade that HUD Code manufactured housing – as distinguished from pre-code mobile homes – existed.

It was during the early 1980s that manufactured housing – even with interest rates often as high as 21 percent on an adjustable rate loan – that new HUD Code manufactured home sales were more than double the rate nationally that occur today.

The 1980s witnessed the S&L crisis.  They were the years of the Reagan Administration. And in those years the brother of the prior president – Jimmy Carter’s sibling Billy Carter – became a professional promoter of manufactured homes.  Imagine the stir that would occur if the brother of Barack Obama were promoting manufactured housing?

Photo taken while Billy Carter was working for a manufactured home industry producer to promote their brand.  Learn more, at this link here. What’s noteworthy in the recent Democratic presidential debates is that very little was said about affordable housing, much less, manufactured homes.  See the report linked here. By contrast, the Trump Administration has specifically included manufactured homes in their recent executive order, see that, linked here.

One could go further to identify other direct and indirect impacts and connections between former President Carter, affordable housing, and manufactured homes. One example that should leap to mind is the Habitat for Humanity program.

But none of those are the focus today. Rather, they are the backdrop to the latest example of the erosion of yet another long-standing American principle that politics stopped at “the water’s edge.”

Hillary Clinton wasn’t the first to say it, but AZ Quotes cites her, which is fine. Presidents William Taft and George W. Bush are among others who have said similarly.

What the expression of ‘politics stopping at the waters edge’ meant in part was that when the American president was overseas, there were no cheap shots or efforts to undermine his – or potentially, her – administration. Years before Donald J. Trump said “America First,” Democrats and Republicans largely agreed that each must put the national interest over partisan gameplaying.

That mantra of politics stopping at the waters edge largely held for decades between Democrats and Republicans. Even news media toned it down when a president of either party was overseas.  Why?  Because it was in the best interests of the country to do so. To do otherwise would give fodder to political and economic opponents overseas.

Much has happened since those somewhat more collegial days in our industry and others, or in American politics.

While President Donald J. Trump is in Japan for the G20 Summit meetings, former President Carter alleged on 6.28.2019 that the 45th president is in the Oval Office because of election interference by the Russians. The video clip is below.

Jimmy Carter suggesting that President Trump is somehow illegitimate because of Russian election meddling is absurd on several levels. Not the least of which was Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s recent findings to the contrary. There was no collusion, said Mueller’s investigation and others in Congress.  They reflected a total lack of evidence that Russian interference changed any votes. Russians were indicted in 2016 election meddling, but not one American was indicted for that cause.  But the issue begs a larger question.  How common is election meddling historically?

Election Meddling U.S. Politics, and Policy

The idea of interfering in the foreign affairs of other nations is hardly new. The U.S. and Russia – including the old Soviet Union – have each ‘interfered’ in the internal affairs of each other’s and numerous other country’s internal affairs for decades. Right or wrong, that’s part of what a given nation’s spy services do.

There was U.S. involvement in Russian elections. One example?  Per Wikipedia,The first Russian president Boris Yeltsin won his second term in the 1996 presidential elections.

A team of private US citizens, campaign experts organized by Felix Braynin, provided assistance to the Yeltsin campaign.[40] The team consisted of Steven Moore, Joe Shumate, George Gorton and Richard Dresner, who worked in Russia four months and received $250,000, plus payment of all costs and unlimited budget to conduct surveys and other activities.[41]

Simultaneously the US administration ensured a US$10.2 billion IMF loan to Russia[42] as it was drowning in the economic and social disaster, to keep the national economy and pro-Western liberal government afloat.[43] The loan funds were fraudulently misused by Yeltsin’s inner circle, and the IMF knowingly turned a blind eye to these facts.[44] Although the aggressive pro-Yeltsin campaign boosted his approval rate from an initial 6%[45] to the 35% that he got during the first round of elections, and later made him win the second round against the left-wing competitor with 54% to 40%, there were wide speculations that the official results were rigged.”[46]

Former President Barack Obama’s Administration allegedly interfered with Israel’s election in 2016, notes Wikipedia.

During the administration of President Barack Obama, the U.S. State Department sent $350,000 to an Israeli organization, OneVoice, which used the funds to try to oust Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”[28]

The overview of how Wikipedia introduces the notion of electoral interference in the elections of foreign nations is even more sobering, and therefore, more important to be aware of on this hot-button topic.

Theoretical and empirical research on the effect of foreign electoral intervention had been characterized as weak overall as late as 2011; however, since then a number of such studies have been conducted.[1] One study indicated that the country intervening in most foreign elections is the United States with 81 interventions, followed by Russia (including the former Soviet Union) with 36 interventions from 1946 to 2000—an average of once in every nine competitive elections.”[2][3][4][5]

The bottom line is that none of this election tampering concerns are new. Are millions in this nation going to be so naïve as to believe that the Chinese or other nations aren’t doing the same as the Russians?

The 2016 instance of Russian ‘election meddling’ has been arguably overblown because one political party and their media allies didn’t like the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Then President Barack Obama Said It

Left-of-center Poltifact, in it’s narrative about voter fraud, cited this quote from former President Obama in the weeks before the 2016 election: “But the larger point that I want to emphasize here is that there is no serious person out there who would suggest somehow that you could even rig America’s elections, in part because they’re so decentralized and the numbers of votes involved. There’s no evidence that that has happened in the past, or that there are instances in which that will happen this time. And so I’d advise Mr. Trump to stop whining and go try to make his case to get votes.”

Frankly, while the first phrase has some merit, what followed in that quote from former President Obama claim is obviously dubious, as the election interference study referenced by Wikipedia cited above reveals.

Richard Nixon was convinced that there was domestic election cheating in key states in 1960 that gave the White House to John F. Kenney. Nixon, right or wrong, kept largely silent about the matter.

Thus, what former President Carter did yesterday was just the latest example of a more openly polarized political climate. Carter’s was a political claim, demonstrably misleading, and not worthy of an elder statesman who has debatably done more outside of the Oval Office than during his years in it.

Former Democrat turned Republican President Ronald Reagan was able to get legislation passed during a Democratic dominated Congress. Similarly, House Speaker Newt Gingrich (GOP) likewise found common ground with former President Bill Clinton (D).  Bipartisan bills were passed even as impeachment hearings for Clinton’s lying under oath occurred. For those lies, Clinton was disbarred, not just impeached. Indeed, the First Step Act is but one of several examples of bipartisanship that is occurring even in the current political climate.

Follow the facts, follow the evidence, and follow the money. Ask, who benefits?

It was during the waning days of the Clinton administration that the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA) was passed into law. These historic lessons are reminders to us today of reality vs. spin and narratives.  Spin or deception occur with a desire to influence people.  Ironically, those who claim that Russia – which by all accounts did meddle, only their vote-changing efforts were unsuccessful – interfered with the 2016 election are guilty of attempting to manipulate people and their votes too. Put differently, Russian meddling – while real enough – is in it practical impact largely a head fake.

That’s why fact-checks and historic context are useful gauges to see who is being accurate, and who is spinning a web of deception. Which then begs the question, why? Why the ongoing lies and deceit?

The 45th President Donald J. Trump won the 2016 election because he campaigned in key states that Secretary Hillary Clinton largely or completely ignored. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania went Republican for the first time in years as a result. There are those who disagree with President Trump’s style, sense of humor, negotiating tactics, and policy perspectives. Failure to admit reality betrays an impression of weakness by Democrats and their allies, whose policies the Trump Administration are challenging day-by-day. Rephrased, there apparently are Democratic strategists who believe that it is safer to lie or attempt to deceive in order win votes than it is to debate issues on actual historic outcomes and the merits.

There is an ongoing effort by some to obscure history.

See All Issues are Political, linked here.

In an era when fake news is a mantra across the left-right political spectrum, deception is a risky strategy. Time will tell how that plays out in the 2020 contests.

There are several factors that should be understood to explain the rises and falls in the sales, production, and shipments of new factory-built homes during the varied mobile home and manufactured home eras. One should not be overly simplistic. That said, the historic trend was far higher before Berkshire Hathaway acquired Clayton Homes and their affiliated lenders. Political and other factors enter into the mix as well.

Flashback! Funny, Surprising, Interesting Jay Leno, Donald J. Trump 1999 Video Interview

April 9th, 2019 Comments off

Let’s be clear.  There are some things that are different now, then it was back then for comedy, late night TV, and for Donald J. Trump.

That said, whatever your view of the 45th president, take 10. See what he says.  Compare and contrast it to what you hear from this or that source today.

The video is a mix of serious and light hearted.  For the younger set, this video reminds us too how much sharper our TV pictures are then they were just 20 years ago.  At the time this video was made, Mr. Trump was pondering a run for the Oval Office on the third-party Reform ticket.

Why this, why now? As many have realized, perhaps the biggest risk for many is from political winds.  Those political winds may be local, national, or global.

Knowledge is potential power. History can help with clarity. Make it a good night in MHVille.

Criminal Justice Reform – Fact$ & Why it Matters to Manufactured Housing Professionals, Investors, and America

November 15th, 2018 Comments off

Let’s start with some facts.

There’s a shortage of construction and other workers.

That worker shortage impacts manufactured housing, and other builders too.  There is also the cost and consequences of incarceration.

According to Wikipedia,In October 2013, the incarceration rate of the United States of America was the highest in the world, at 716 per 100,000 of the national population. While the United States represents about 4.4 percent of the world’s population, it houses around 22 percent of the world’s prisoners.”

When did that surge in incarcerations begin?

According to Reason in a 2015 post, “…neoconservative academic John J. DiIulio Jr. warned Weekly Standard readers [in the 1990s] that “These monsters weren’t entirely inhuman. “Under some conditions,” DiIulio allowed, “they are affectionate and loyal to fellow gang members or relatives.” Though “not even moms or grandmoms are sacred to them.”

All this fear-mongering would eventually be debunked. Over the next two decades juvenile crime, like crime in general, would sharply fall instead of surging. DiIulio himself eventually recanted the superpredator theory. But not before it was adopted by a number of prominent and powerful Americans, such as this woman,” said the libertarian-leaning Reason, which posted the following video.

Rephrased, then First Lady Hillary Clinton made the remarks reflect in the video along with others in support of President Bill Clinton’s sentencing guidelines program.

It was a Democratic administration that led the U.S. into the highest percentage of inmates in the world.  While there were voices on both sides of the aisle that wanted that, why is it that some Democrats try to make it sound like this was a conservative-created issue? That’s simply untrue. Without President Clinton’s buy-in and Hillary Clinton’s leadership and support for that cause, it would likely have died in Congress.

Closed Minds?

There are regrettably millions of Americans who are reflexively anti-Trump.  But the 45th President’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has worked with a bipartisan group to craft legislation that may well cross the finish line.  Who says?

Another left-of-center media outlet, USA Today.

President Trump Embraces Bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform Legislation

The ‘First Step Act,’ developed by [Jared] Kushner and a bipartisan group of lawmakers, is designed to improve rehabilitation programs for former prisoners and give judges more discretion in sentencing offenders for nonviolent crime, particularly drug offenders,” David Jackson, Deborah Barfield Berry, and John Fritze report,” said the USA Today.

The industry and the nation can benefit from the right type of bill.

MHProNews is not taking a position on the specifics of this legislation.  Rather, we are spotlighting it as one of several topics that a good post-production national association should be objectively paying attention to, and so should savvy manufactured housing professionals, owners, investors, and all others who care about people and justice. We also applaud those businesses that provide prudential second chances to those who want to start over after incarceration.

President Jimmy Carter Blasts Trump Administration on Affordable Housing, Carter’s Manufactured Home Ties

September 14th, 2018 Comments off

CNBC reported last week that former President Jimmy Carter took aim at the Trump Administration on the important issue of affordable housing.

Low-income housing needs to be raised much higher as a priority for our country,” former President Carter said in a phone interview with Emma Newburger. “That’s the first step toward making people who are now dependent on government assistance, on welfare rolls, to get a good job and have a chance to raise their families and put their kids through school.”

Mr. Carter told CNBC that the Trump Administration is ‘ignoring a national housing crisis,’ and he urged voters to support candidates who promote affordable housing.

The Carters, HUD’s Carson, and Manufactured Housing

CNBC’s Newburger told MHProNews that the “topic [of manufactured housing] didn’t come up in the interview” with former President Carter.

By contrast, when the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was asked to respond to former President Carter’s broadside, a HUD spokesperson offered to MHProNews the very specific answer of Secretary Carson’s strong statement of support for manufactured housing.

The HUD spokesperson who replied to the Daily Business News on MHProNews was one that has not previously spoken or messaged with MHProNews. Her reply for HUD is all-the-more interesting to investors and businesses in manufactured housing (MH) who read the tea leaves that may signal what direction the agency will take when their regulatory comments review are completed, later this year.

Those comments the spokesperson sent from Secretary Carson were previously published by the Daily Business News, and are found on HUD’s website here, or at the article with some commentary linked below.

“A New Era of Cooperation and Coordination,” is Promised by HUD Secretary Carson, Saying “I Hear You”

Mr. Carter is a prominent supporter of Habitat for Humanity. An informed source in Carter’s home state of Georgia told MHProNews that Habitat rarely uses manufactured homes, preferring to get “free labor” from those who are putting their “sweat equity” into the house that they help build. That keeps Habitat’s construction costs low.

In Habitat’s view, per our source, this combination of factors creates a greater tie of the Habitat dwelling buyer to their home and mortgage payments.

However admirable Habitat is, it obviously only scratches the surface of our nation’s affordable housing needs.  Their own data shows that the majority of their work is done in other countries, instead of here in the U.S.

It’s noteworthy that a Google search of former President Carter reveals no obvious criticism by him of the Obama Administration over their handling of affordable housing efforts.  By comparison, even some progressives criticized former President Obama for his perceived missteps at HUD regarding affordable housing. One such critique was about Shaun Donovan’s selection by former President Obama, and that source viewed Donavan as a Clinton Administration ally throwback.

So why did Mr. Carter give former President Obama a pass for 8 years, when the rate of home ownership dropped?

Where was Mr. Carter on the issue of rising rents during the Obama Administration?

Or why didn’t the former president from Plains, GA not critique Mr. Obama’s handling of the economy, debts, and deficits? During the Obama era, rental rates continued to rise. Regulatory policies during the 44th president’s term in office constrained or even crushed small businesses by the thousands, while large companies recovered and grew.  Manufactured housing has slowly recovered during the Obama years, due in part to regulatory overreaches.

Details further below will outline factors that began during the Carter Administration years, which culminated in some of the housing and mortgage issues of our era. See further below.

Yet, in an apparently partisan Democratic Party fashion, Mr. Carter’s recent blast wasn’t aimed at former President Obama for the erosion in home ownership rates.  The peanut farmer turned president from Plains didn’t take at rising rents under former President Obama. Instead, Mr. Carter attacks President Donald J. Trump?

The Trump Administration has only been in office for about 20 months.  Dozens of the 45th president’s nominees have been slow-walked by Democrats in the Senate.

Ironically, the rate of home ownership and the economy are both improving at a significant clip since Mr. Trump won the election.  So where’s the logic of Mr. Carter’s claims? CNBC apparently failed to ask – or did not report it if they did – insights into any of these salient questions.

Perhaps equally interesting is the following issue and related question.

The federal manufactured housing construction and safety standards administered by HUD had their first full year in effect during President Carter’s Administration.

There were certainly many factors that contributed to the steep drop in sales of mobile homes from their peaks in 1973 and 1974. When the HUD Code kicked in and manufactured housing was ‘born’, sales levels stayed fairly low during the Carter years. They went up modestly during the Reagan Administration era.

Mr. Carter’s colorful younger brother Billy served two different independent HUD Code manufactured home builders in high visibility roles for several years in the 1980s.

So why didn’t actively-retired President Carter do more to promote manufactured homes as an affordable housing solution? Or why hasn’t Mr. Carter done more to elevate manufactured homes as an obvious and proven free market solution to affordable housing since he left office?

After all, Mr. Carter can’t claim ignorance of the topic. The former president’s home state was at one time a top-tier manufactured home producer.

So, why did HUD Code manufactured home shipments nose-dive relative to the end of the mobile home era timeframe compared to the Carter years?  By contrast, as Daily Business News on MHProNews has reported, both prior Presidents Nixon and Ford each promoted “mobile homes” as an important part of the U.S. affordable housing mix.

The photo below was provided to MHProNews by ScotBilt Homes, which has produced manufactured homes in GA for many years. Left-to-right in the photo are Sam Scott, Judy Cazel, President Jimmy Carter, his brother Billy Carter, and Jim Cazel, the pilot of the aircraft they are standing by.

The Reaction to former President Carter’s Comments From Washington, D.C.

There is no widely published comments to be found from a Google search (see downloadable screen capture) from the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) regarding the recent comments by former President Carter.

But the Washington, D.C. based Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) weighed in on the conventional comments by Mr. Carter in a nuanced comment as follows.

While Secretary Carson as we noted in a recent article has said the right things about the need to eliminate exclusionary zoning, there is much more that HUD could do to support consumer financing for affordable housing, most particularly chattel financing for manufactured homes,” said Mark Weiss, JD, President and CEO of MHARR to MHProNews.

Weiss and MHARR members are on record encouraging more lending from the FHA, while acknowledging the progress made to date during the Trump Administration.

It should be noted that MHARR has no PAC, by design, but MHI does. MHARR has praised the Trump Administration, as has MHI.

“Move, Open, Live” De Rose Industries & Senator Thom Tillis’ Mobile Home Comments

But a key distinction between the two trade groups on this issue is that MHI put two paid pro-Clinton speakers on stage in their pre-election Chicago event, a claim MHI has never opted to deny or try to explain.  The mainstream headline below is one of several that document that Berkshire’s chairman backed the party that favored heavy regulations. Why?

MHI’s primary “big boy” member is Berkshire Hathaway owned Clayton Homes and their affiliated lenders, 21st Mortgage Corp and Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance. Kevin Clayton is seen with former President Bill Clinton in the disastrous post-Haitian earthquake “recovery” effort photo and linked report below, that dives into those alleged scandals.

“Toxic Trailers” – Clayton Homes, Warren Buffett, Kevin Clayton, Clintons – Exposé Videos

Warren Buffett campaigned for Secretary Hillary Clinton against Mr. Trump in 2016, saying on several occasions, that Buffett believed in her policies.  As MHI award-winner – and periodic MHI critic – Marty Lavin has said, “Pay more attention to what people do than what they say,” and “Follow the money.”

Forbes’ John Moratta Weighed In on Carter to Obama Era

But there’s other issues that need to be raised, one of which a Forbes Contributor David John Marotta examined. In 2012, Marotta argued that the entire contest between Democratic candidate and incumbent, President Barack Obama vs. GOP nominee, former Governor Mitt Romney should come down to a single subject.

It’s one that directly relates to affordable housing, manufactured homes, the U.S. economy, and the future direction of America.

The Forbes headline was, “The Election Should Be Settled by a Single Question: Who Caused the Financial Crisis?”

Two key paragraphs by Marotta on the subject framed by the headline above read as follows.

“…It all began with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1977 under President Jimmy Carter. Its goal was to reduce discrimination against people in low-income neighborhoods by FDIC banks. The law did not provide any criteria for equal process. Thus any bank whose lending results were called into question could be challenged. And banks needed regulators to approve their actions.

DavidJohnMarottaForbesContributorDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews300The CRA increased the oversight of financial institutions and empowered organizations such as the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN). Obama’s work as a community organizer included working as ACORN’s attorney suing banks in Illinois.”

Skipping further into his column, the following extended quotes from Marotta said, “In the last election campaign, it was vehemently denied that Obama had been an ACORN trainer until the New York Times uncovered records demonstrating he was.”

Now Democratic New York Governor “Andrew Cuomo was the assistant secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and then secretary under President Bill Clinton from 1993 through 2001. Cuomo created 800 new HUD employees who were paid as much as $100,000 to fight against abolition of the agency. These community builders, as they were called, worked with local groups to lobby against tax cuts and to aid Democratic candidates.

Under Cuomo’s leadership in 1998, HUD forced banks in Texas to lend $2.1 billion in affirmative action loans with a higher risk and higher default rate.”

President Clinton touted these supposed achievements. “In 1998 he boasted,In the 20-year history of the Community Investment Act, 85 percent-plus the money loaned out under it to poor inner-city neighborhoods has been loaned in the five years since I’ve been president.”

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were on the path to disaster. Now Obama blames deregulation under the Bush administration for the financial meltdown, but there was none.

After Clinton, George W. Bush and Republicans tried to tighten up lending standards for which they were demonized by the Democrats. These efforts were pushed unsuccessfully throughout the Bush administration starting in April 2001.

Ranking Democrats Barney Frank and Charles Schumer led their party to block these efforts in the fall of 2003. Frank made light of Republican concerns. He said, “I think we see entities that are fundamentally sound financially and withstand some of the disaster scenarios. And even if there were a problem, the federal government doesn’t bail them out. But the more pressure there is there, then the less we see in terms of affordable housing.”

Those points in Forbes are ones MHProNews has raised several times over the years –  including, but not limited to – by previously sharing the video posted below.

It should also be noted that former President Bill Clinton himself acknowledged that, “The responsibility the Democrats do have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was president to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”

Let’s let all of the above sink in for a few moments.

That should not imply that several Republicans weren’t also complicit in the housing/lending issues in the run-up to 2008, because Fannie and Freddie were donating to candidates on both sides of the aisle.

But more influence buying cash went to Democrats. Politico reported that the GSEs spent a stunning $200 million dollars in campaign contributions, see the screen capture below.

So it seems more than ironic that former Democratic Presidents Carter, Obama, and the Clintons now gleefully point a public finger at President Donald J. Trump. But the evidence and factual reality is that those Democratic leaders are guilty of blatant hypocrisy. They and their party bear a significant degree of responsibility for the economic turmoil, starting in the Carter years, during the Clinton Administration, as well as the run up and through the Obama Administration eras.

Big government solutions, the ones more commonly proposed by Democrats, have proven for 50 plus year not to work.

It’s federal government policy that turned toward more subsidized conventional housing, which has never kept up with the needs in over 50 years.  Manufactured homes, or the mobile home era before the HUD Code existed, were the free enterprise solution that have proven to be as “amazing” as HUD Secretary Carson said in Senate testimony earlier this year.

Summing Up the View from MHVille

There is little doubt that members of both major parties have over the years made their respective errors, along with efforts to spin or cover up those mistakes.

But there’s plenty of evidence that former Presidents Carter, Clinton, and Obama – along with Democratic allies in Congress – fostered the conditions that have undermined manufactured housing, and hurt the economy at several times, and in often severe ways.

As industry investors, professionals, and all others ponder their support and votes in the upcoming midterms, it’s vital to consider the issues noted above.

Democrats and disaster-capitalists have long ties. Mr. Buffett and Kevin Clayton’s connections to top Democrats ought to be weighed by all those who care about the issue of affordable housing and manufactured homes role in that effort.

As a disclaimer, while the publishers of MHProNews are political independents, this writer published an article that supported then candidate Trump during the Republican primaries in 2016. That article was republished by the Trump campaign on their website, as the screen captured image below reflects.

While the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) paid for two pro-Clinton speakers in the closing days before the 2016 election, the Kovach family supported Donald J. Trump’s candidacy as the best for the industry, small business and hundreds of millions of Americans. One of those stories ended up on the president’s campaign website, and hundreds of conservative and pro-Trump websites.

Resistance Democrats, and some Republicans too, have caught to slow or stop the reforms that former Democrat turned Republican Donald J. Trump has sought to bring to the U.S. in economic and foreign policies. Those who claimed that Mr. Trump could never win were proved wrong.

Some of those same voices are shouting daily now that Democrats will carry the House, and maybe even the Senate in a supposed “blue wave.” It is a “knife fight,” as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell recently said.

But the races are close. And the polling touted in 2018 has some of the same problems that 2016 polling had.  It is every bit as likely, perhaps more likely given consumer and business confidence levels, that a “red wave” is coming.

President Trump is taking over the GOP, and is transforming it into a pro-worker and pro-business, pro-growth party.  1/3 of the counties that went for Mr. Obama flipped in 2016 and supported Mr. Trump.

The midterms will be all about turnout. Turnout will be determined by energy and enthusiasm. The economic recovery this time isn’t driven by Federal Reserve monetary easing, or doubling the national debt in just eight years, as occurred during the disastrous Obama Administration years.

We are only now beginning to see details and documents about the level of corruption that occurred at the FBI, DOJ, and perhaps the CIA during the Obama era in the 2016 campaign.

The future of our industry’s growth potential may hang in the balance of a builder-businessman turned politician. President Trump has systematically been keeping his campaign promises.

HUD Secretary Carson’s pressroom spokesperson pointed to his manufactured housing comments as their reply to former President Carter’s controversial, and demonstrably misleading claim made to CNBC.

Yes, MHARR’s president is correct in saying that positive words and the regulatory freeze must be followed by more concreate and positive action.

But the Trump Administration, for all the drama that surrounds it, is keeping their promises to put American jobs, businesses, and our national interests first.  It’s a vast improvement over the presidents of both parties since the days of Democrat turned Republican, President Ronald Reagan.

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie.” – Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler’s minster of propaganda, per the Jewish Virtual Library, and citing ThinkExist.

Earlier this week, after the news of the Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen verdict and guilty pleas, The Drudge Report noted that the mainstream media had used the word “impeach” over 200 times in 24 hours.

There is no degree in medicine or psychology needed to realize that when something is repeated that often, in so short a time span, it has an impact on a significant part of the population.

There is no need to buy into a ‘conspiracy theory,’ because facts are facts. It’s about looking at the evidence dispassionately, not emotionally, because emotions are what’s often manipulated. Understanding the truth of an issue in doubt or controversy is about considering the evidence about an issue from several angles.  That’s how the truth is discovered in turbulent times.

The odds of impeaching Donald J. Trump are arguably low, because the constitutional requirements sets a two tier process, neither one of which is easy to meet. “At the federal level, Article I, Section 2, Clause 5 of the Constitution grants to the House of Representatives “the sole power of impeachment”, and Article I, Section 3, Clause 6 grants to the Senate “the sole Power to try all Impeachments,” per Wikipedia.

So in this case, the phrase “impeachment” is more about its usefulness as a political narrative tool. It is a rallying cry for those who lost the last election. Democrats, Republicans and all others are being asked to respond to the notion of impeachment in the upcoming midterms.

Facts are facts no matter how often lies are repeated. The byline writer is an MD by training, and thus had to take psychology as part of the courses needed to obtain a medical degree. With that understanding, it is stunning to note that several notable attorneys, including Democratic supporter Alan Dershowitz, has cast doubt that any crime has been committed by the Donald J. Trump in the alleged payments – even if those payments to porn stars took place.

Attorney, author, radio and TV talker Mark Levin has said that an abuse of power has taken place. Why?  Because former Trump attorney Michael Cohen plead guilty to a crime that is in fact no crime at all.  That being so, it would directly reflect on high levels of the Department of Justice (DoJ) too. Those are views held by other attorneys, and of course, the other side has their taking heads too.

So, to discern reality, one must step back and reflect on the evidence and competing claims.

It was so-called “Russian collusion” that was the supposed predicate for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. Why did that fall into the background?  Simply put, no evidence exists for it.  All that exists are often repeated allegations, with no proof offered, other than a dicey dossier paid for in part by the Clinton campaign.

A juror in the Paul Manafort case, who admits she voted for Donald Trump, said Manafort was guilty of the tax related crimes he was accused of, but said she believed the matter only came to light because President Trump is the target. They want to get him any way that they can.

The mostly progressive voices on the compelling documentary video Shadows of Liberty, linked below, stressed the high degree of control of the news media in America by 6 major conglomerates. They decide what is news, said former CBS anchor Dan Rather and a host of others cited in the documentary video have said.

“Shadows of Liberty” Movie Introduction, Affordable Housing, and You

President Trump doesn’t say that all news in America is corrupted. But the president – and the White House press room, which supplies MHProNews with numerous daily updates – do say that significant portions of the media reflect a strong bias against him.

As if to prove the point, the Boston Globe organized over 300 newspapers to do editorials that say that the news media is not the “enemy of the people.” But what the president has clarified is that it is fake news that’s the enemy, and not all news is fake.

Deepa Kumar quote from from the thought-provoking video documenatary, Shadows of Liberty, posted on the page linked here.

No Choir Boy

The Access Hollywood/Billy Bush video in 2016 made it abundantly clear to Americans that candidate Donald J. Trump was not a choir boy. Evangelicals, blue collar, and others nevertheless turned out to vote for him by the tens of millions. Normally blue states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania flipped for Donald Trump, knowing about allegations very much in keeping with what porn star Stormy Daniels or others like her have more recently allege.

People voted to make Donald Trump President based upon his policies, and/or to oppose the policies of Secretary Hillary Clinton.

A massive smear campaign is clearly underway. It is not unlike the Billy Bush video of Donald Trump in 2016, hoping to separate the president from his supporters.  It is insignificant if the claims of Daniels – or if an army of hookers – stepped forward and proved their ‘relationships’ with candidate or citizen Trump.  Legal experts say that it is not illegal to pay someone to be quiet. All else is routinely a repeated smoke screen, advanced by those who have an anti-Trump agenda.

Note, this advice holds for MHVille trade media readers too. Thanks for more than doubling our already industry- leading readership in the last 12 months. Our thanks too for our supporters, who make this platform possible.

MHVille and Why it Matters

For MHVille:

  • S 2155 would never have taken place under Hillary Clinton, if she held true to her promises to defend Dodd-Frank and the CFPB.
  • Secretary Clinton would not have done the tax cuts.  Virtually every manufactured home industry business has benefited from that, as have the majority of workers.
  • It was candidate Trump who pledged – and has kept his word – that he would massively roll back regulations.  There was no such pledge by Clinton.  As Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and others are proving, if the GOP lost control of Congress, regulations could come roaring back with a vengeance.
  • Jobs in mining, energy, and manufacturing are returning under President Trump.  Then President Barack Obama mocked Mr. Trump about during the campaign, that those jobs and industries would never come back. Secretary Clinton doubled down on comments like “the deplorables.” She too spoke about jobs that would never come back, which are now, due to the 45th president’s leadership.

Certainly, even many Trump supporters are not comfortable with certain tweets and tactics.

But in spite of a historic blizzard of news coverage that is some 90 percent against him, POTUS Trump’s approval has been rising nationally. Black and other minority support has nearly doubled since he took office. Among the clear reasons why is the lowest unemployment levels in decades.  Business and consumer confidence alike have soared during his time in office.

Mr. Trump is a businessman, who comes from the housing and construction fields.  What more needs be said, is reflected by the MHARR video interview, shown below.  It must be emphasized for clarity, that MHARR takes no sides in political campaigns. They have no PAC, as MHI does.  So when prior MHARR President, now senior advisor, Danny Ghorbani speaks about the president and his administration in this short interview, that must be kept in mind.

The midterms are racing up. Congressional voting is just over two months away. The agenda-driven voices in the media apparently hope to smear the president, and suppress turnout among his supporters.

Dan Rather quote from the compelling video, Shadows of Liberty, posted on the page linked here.

Would MHVille be helped or harmed by a GOP loss of the House, or the Senate?

That’s a critical issue – what’s best for MHVille and the nation – that you and your peers must answer. That is what you and your circle of influence must decide before you vote, or sit on your buns come midterm Election Day.

Repeating a lie, or using an exaggerated narrative for an agenda, doesn’t make it true.

Politically Incorrect Cartoon Commentaries, Lighter Side of Making America and Manufactured Housing Great Again

Jobs that former President Barack Obama said where never coming back to the U.S. – like mining and manufacturing – are roaring back under the Trump Administration’s leadership.

Billionaires Warren Buffett, Chase’s Jaime Dimon Praise U.S. Economy

For those who don’t know, Warren Buffett has been a Trump critic long before his successful run for the Oval Office.

So, it is worth noting that Warren Buffett, who supported Barack Obama and later Secretary Hillary Clinton, recently praised the U.S. economic recovery that has been occurring as a result of President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump’s leadership.

Buffett says you should buy stocks, or make investments, when the long-term outlook in a field or company is good.  Think about that as you ponder Berkshire Hathaway’s moves in the manufactured housing industry space in the last 15 years.

White House Signing Ceremony on Historic Pro-Growth Financial Regulatory Reform

This Buffett quote is worth pondering in the light of MHI and related controversies.

The DOJ’s Inspector General’s Report

On 6.14.2018, the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General (IG) Office released an eighteen month report that points to issues with the 2016 election that point to a “Deep State,” and to issues that aren’t based in Russia, but rather are found right here in the U.S.A.

Before diving into elements of the DOJ IG report, let’s set the table with an understanding of the origin of the concept of the Deep State.

What is the “Deep State?”

Wikipedia says that “The term “deep state” was defined in 2014 by Mike Lofgren, a former Republican U.S. congressional aide, as “a hybrid association of elements of government and parts of top-level finance and industry that is effectively able to govern the United States without reference to the consent of the governed as expressed through the formal political process.”

According to whistleblower Edward Snowden, “the deep state is not just the intelligence agencies, it is really a way of referring to the career bureaucracy of government. These are officials who sit in powerful positions, who don’t leave when presidents do, who watch presidents come and go…they influence policy, they influence presidents.”

While some, like the New York Times, dismiss the notion of the Deep State, it is becoming widely discussed across the left-right media divide. The discussion on the so-called deep state is so intense, it’s spawned an upcoming cable TV series on Epix.

Part of the issue of “Deep State” bureaucrats, who are shown as flaunting rules that prohibit them from playing favorites, leaking information to the press, having their own agenda vs. that of an elected administration, and the like.

There are those in MHVille who point to Pam Danner, the prior administrator of the Office if Manufactured Housing Programs at HUD, as an example of the Deep State at work in ways that harmed the manufactured housing industry. Danner did so, they say, until she was finally removed.

Citing sources, the Washington Post report noted that it was MHARR, not MHI, that worked for Danner’s removal.

While he focused on the military-industrial complex, President Dwight D. Eisenhower raised a similar theme to the Deep State over half-a-century ago.  In his 1961 farewell address, POTUS Ike said “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

The maxim of the proverbial “power behind the throne” makes it clear that various understandings of the Deep State are ancient, not new.

The IG’s Report Points to Deep State Woes

The DOJ’s IG report is a both a political and legal document. It claims that there is no evidence of undue influence or favoritism, before or since the 2016 election, in the FBI or DOJ.

Nevertheless, sources that have read the over 500 page report say it is replete with examples of the opposite.

Attorney, constitutional author, and talk radio firebrand Mark Levin – who at one point was a “never Trump” believer – gives a quick litany of examples. Levin lays out the facts of how the IG report reveals wildly problematic legal issues, with a strongly and illicit anti-Trump bias.

Tucker Carlson, who has an independent, libertarian bent, had several features last night that likewise raised issues with the IG report.

The video below is about what the IG report reveals about the FBI, according to a former FBI Assistant Director.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton on inspector general’s report’s findings in the handling of the Hillary Clinton investigation: Don’t trust mainstream media analysis.

Donald Trump Jr reacts to DOJ IG report.

Rudy Giuliani, attorney for President Trump, speaks out after the release of DOJ inspector general report on the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email investigation.

The president’s legal-team point man, former New York Mayor Ruddy Giuliani, said the IG report is proof that the entire special counsel handling has been tainted from the beginning.  He claims it is leading away from clear evidence of illegalities allegedly committed by Secretary Clinton and her supporters.

Meanwhile, with no evidence yet of any direct or illegal ties to Russia by the Trump campaign, there were “spies” (informants) used, electronic, and other surveillance methods used against now President Trump’s team.

The deep state could be viewed through the “Drain the Swamp” lens that helped elect Donald Trump.

When senior FBI agents vowed to keep Mr. Trump from winning, or would cause him to be wrongfully impeached once he won, it is a constitutionally frightening development.

Elections are a peaceful way of selecting representatives of the people in a Republic. Elections create a stake for voters.  But if elections can be rigged by high-level public officials, attempting to work behind the scenes, that’s a problem that will not end well.

But it would be naïve to think that high-level “rigging of the system” was new.

We noted the concern of President Eisenhower.  But other examples exist of the power of the unelected bureaucratic federal officials – including but not limited to, the FBI – during the Vietnam conflict, and during the civil rights movement.

This is why vigilance is necessary.  That’s a basic price of freedom.

Every day, foreign powers seek to influence each other’s politics. That’s nothing new. The U.S. has done it, China and Russia do it, as do other nations too. So the hype – mostly from the left – over “Russia, Russia, Russia” shouldn’t be overlooked, but it must be taken in context.

For Americans to remain free, “We, the People” must be properly informed. President Trump and Bernie Sanders alike were debatably correct when each said that the “system is rigged.”

Day by day, it seems clear that the 45th Chief Executive of the United States means to keep his campaign promises.

Everyone has character foibles and flaws.

James Watt was known for insightful quotes.

But Mr. Trump is demonstrably taking the nation in a better economic direction. The steps he’s taken have been good for business in general, and good for manufactured housing.

Editorially, MHProNews has and continues to support President Trump based upon principles like tax cuts that have worked for past Democratic and Republican presidents alike.

As the midterms are approaching, there is a fight within the Democratic party between moderate and more socialistic Democrats. So say members of the Democratic party.

Doug Schoen, Clinton Adviser, warns – “Democrats must advance an agenda…to create a society of opportunity for all – not guaranteed outcomes achieved through wealth redistribution.”

In the GOP, recent voting indicates that pro-Trump candidates are outperforming so-called moderate or more traditional Republicans.

Time and again, the president has found a way to get things done. That’s why Americans elected him.  Unelected “deep state” actors ought not be permitted to foil the will of the people, expressed in a valid election.  “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

“Never Let a Serious Crisis Go To Waste”

October 9th, 2017 Comments off

Is the Columbus Day controversy only a symptom of a deeper challenge? Why should business professionals care?

You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” – Rahm Emanuel, then President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff, currently Mayor of Chicago.

Columbus DayWar on Free Enterprise, American Culture, and the Republic?

Columbus Day is a US. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century, but did not become a federal holiday until 1937,” says History.

This memorial of Columbus wasn’t a crisis under President Barack Obama.

So why is it that now that President Donald J. Trump is in office, Columbus Day has become a part of the broader assault on American culture, history, and the U.S. Constitutional republican system?

To be sure, resistance to Columbus Day has been brewing in the U.S. for about 25 years.

But for some voices on the right, they say this anti-Columbus Day movement has more to do with Rules for Radicals than it does with the man who was long celebrated as an explorer who brought the faith and Western ways of Europeans to the New World.

Manufactured housing advocate and centrist Rev. Donald Tye Jr. said of such events that it’s a case of “divide and rule.” Tye explained that while people on the right and left are bickering of such issues, the “powers that be” are quietly advancing their agenda.

Siding With Rahm Emanuel Are…

The Rahm Emanuel quote has been stated in similar words by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and President Barack Obama.  But they didn’t invent the notion.

Rather, they based it upon the thinking of Saul Alinsky, who wrote the book Rules for Radicals, that MHProNews has previously reviewed at this link here.

The Austrian Economics Addict, uses the subtitle, Seeing the world through the lens of Austrian Economics.  That group provided the quote that will follow later below.

But to appreciate the quote, it is useful first to understand that Ludwig von Mises is considered by many to be the ‘the father’ of the Austrian school of economics.

What Did Mises and the Austrian School of Economics Believe?

According to, “The Late Scholastics were advocates of property rights and the freedom to contract and trade.” And “…they lived up to Ludwig von Mises’s rule: the first job of an economist is to tell governments what they cannot do.”

Ludwig von Mises is considered by many to be the father of the Austrian School of Economics. Milton Friedman, Thomas Sowell, and others have been influenced by his economic and political principles.

Wikipedia provides some of the better-known quotes by Von Mises:

If history could teach us anything, it would be that private property is inextricably linked with civilization.”

Peace and not war is the father of all things.”

Whoever wishes peace among peoples must fight statism.”

The attainment of the economic aims of man presupposes peace.”

To defeat the aggressors is not enough to make peace durable. The main thing is to discard the ideology that generates war.”

Modern society, based as it is on the division of labor, can be preserved only under conditions of lasting peace.”

If some peoples pretend that history or geography gives them the right to subjugate other races, nations, or peoples, there can be no peace.”

Many words and terms have had their meanings confused. There is ‘classical liberalism,’ which is actually what many conservatives today believe. When Sowell speaks about Liberalism in this context, he’s referring to those with a socialistic bent, not the classical liberal.

Whoever wants peace among nations must seek to limit the state and its influence most strictly.”

Those thoughts by von Mises would likely find wide agreement in business, and industry.  Because when crime, civil unrest, war, or revolution exists, business and people alike are routinely harmed.

Contrast the Austrian School of Thought, as Outlined Above with Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals

With that backdrop, per the Austrian Addict here’s how Rules for Radicals works: “Here is the template.

Saul Alinksy, author of Rules for Radicals, credit, Wikipedia.

1) Use a tragedy as a crisis, or create a crisis where none exists.

2) Paint the crisis with as much emotion as possible, and throw logical analysis out the window.

3) Propose the one and only solution to the problem, which just happens to coincide with what you’ve wanted to implement for many years.

4) Paint anyone who opposes your one and only solution as evil, uncaring, not smart enough to understand the nuanced brilliance of your solution, or in the pockets of …. you pick the evil entity.

5) Force the solution on the people by any means, whether legislatively, by executive order, or through the legal system.

6) When the unintended consequences of your solution rear their ugly head, use them as a reason for more brilliant solutions to made up crises.”

Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. Image credit, Pinterest.

As industry professionals ponder “why” similar or worse conditions under previous administrations were not met with the same level “resistance” as this current admiration, these bullets may be useful.

Hillary Rodham’s master’s thesis was on Saul Alinksy, as this still from the Joe Dan video below reflects.

  • For disciples of Saul Alinsky, they want to take advantage of, or manufacturer a crisis that is used to advance their cause.
  • Alinsky was opposed to free enterprise, and the limited government concepts that America’s founding father’s established.
  • For some billionaires, supporting what appears to be a left-wing agenda is arguably a means to leverage more political and economic power, by (mis)using the power of government to enhance their earning potential.

Lessons Learned?

Christopher Columbus was an imperfect person, just like the rest of us involved in some way in American history. Columbus’ holiday has been celebrated for his courage, spirit of adventure, discovery, and more.

“Bet Your Ass Its A Revolution,” lyrics and still from Joe Dan video, below.

If the standard of keeping statues or holidays is perfection, then: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and almost any holiday, political or historic figure you care to mention is at risk.

To see the documentary video, Generation Zero, click the above.

But none of these, per Alinksy disciples, are the real issue.  These are merely excuses used to “divide and rule,” says Rev. Tye and others, as they advance their agenda.

Joe Dan Media’s Music Video Above Isn’t a Celebration of Alinksy. Rather,

the video above is a Critique of Alinksy and Those Who Follow the Alinksy Model.

Who says attacks on history, statues, culture, constitutionally protected rights, etc. are tools for Alinksy disciples to advance their cause?   Rahm Emmanuel, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama.

Jobs Go Boom: Employment Numbers Show Trump Effect

March 8th, 2017 Comments off

For President Donald Trump, the news regarding jobs made for a great morning.

U.S. private sector job creation surging with nearly 300k created last month. Much more than expected!” tweeted Trump.

Today’s report from global payroll firm ADP provides the first look at hard figures from the President’s first full month in office.

Credit: U.K. Daily Mail, Twitter.

According to CNBC, employment in the private sector surged by 298,000 for the month, with goods producers adding 106,000.

Construction jobs increased by 66,000 and manufacturing added 32,000.

The total exceeded market expectations of 190,000, according to economists surveyed by ADP.

February proved to be an incredibly strong month for employment with increases we have not seen in years,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute.

Confidence is playing a large role,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics on CNBC.

Businesses are anticipating a lot of good stuff — tax cuts, less regulation. They are hiring more aggressively.

A further breakdown shows that service jobs led the way at 193,000, with 66,000 coming from professional and business services and 38,000 from health care.

Companies with 50 to 499 employees added the most with 122,000, while small firms added 104,000 and large contributed 72,000.

Distractions, Dodges, Delays and Disruptions

Even with job growth, President Trump still faces staunch opposition, distractions, dodges, delays and disruptions.

Billionaire George Soros, who supported Hillary Clinton to the tune of almost $10 million to super PACs, along with connections to funding of Black Lives Matter and other “rent-a-riot” organizations, made his position crystal clear in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

George Soros at Davos. Credit: CNBC.

I personally am convinced that he is going to fail,” said Soros.

Failure will come not because of people like me who would like him to fail, but because his ideas that guide him are inherently self-contradictory and the contradictions are already embodied by his advisors.

Soros then elaborated on his comments.

I have described him as an impostor and a con man and a would-be dictator,” said Soros.

But he’s only a would-be dictator because I’m confident that the Constitution and the institutions of the United States are strong enough. He would be a dictator if he could get away with it, but he won’t be able to.

But, not every billionaire sees Trump in a negative light.

And I think this country desperately is looking for somebody to give us leadership.

While the anti-trump side of the media spotlights the Soros-backed “rent-a-riot” protests, businesses are investing billions more in the U.S., and job growth continues, all based upon President Trump’s economic policies.

As well as the markets and new job creation are already responding to his initiatives, where could we be if there wasn’t a non-stop assault on our new president?” said MHProNews and MHLivingNews Publisher L.A. “Tony” Kovach.

It is now official: Donald J. Trump is the 45th President of the United States, and Mike R. Pence is Vice President of the United States.

The Daily Business News has followed primary, election and post election activity closely showing the many faces, and voices of the campaign.

In President Trump’s Inaugural Address, he delivered a strong “America First” message.

The forgotten men and women of this country will be forgotten no longer,” said Trump.

You will never be ignored again.

According to Yahoo News, Trump was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts, reciting the 35-word oath with his hand placed upon two Bibles, one used by his family and another during President Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. Light rain began to fall as the new president stepped forward to address America.

Also noted was the reception that former First Lady and Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton received when she was announced.

Protests have been taking place nationwide leading up to the Inauguration, including a “gay dance party” in front of Vice President Mike Pence’s temporary D.C. residence, and the strange case of a young man setting a fire on a Washington D.C. street in protest, live on television.

When asked why he did so, the young man had an instant response.

Because I felt like it. And because I’m just saying, ‘Screw our president!’

Protestors also took to the streets of Washington D.C. this morning, targeting a McDonald’s, Bank of America branches, Wells Fargo and a Starbucks.

As the nation moves forward with new leadership, the work of creating an efficient government is under way.

American carnage stops right here and right now,” said President Trump.

We must think big and dream even bigger. America will start winning again, winning like never before. We will bring back our jobs, we will bring back our borders, we will bring back our wealth and we will bring back our dreams,” said Trump.

We will build new roads and highways and bridges and airports and tunnels and railways all across our wonderful nation.

President Trump’s cabinet nominees are still in the process of being confirmed by Congress, including Dr. Ben Carson for HUD Secretary, Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State and Steven Mnuchin for Treasury Secretary amongst others.
