Chinese PreFab Housing In U.S., Reasons George Soros’ Davos Remarks on China’s Threat Important to MHVille

January 29th, 2019 Comments off

For years, the Daily Business News (DBN) on MHProNews has been a lone voice in the factory-built housing trade media alerting domestic firms about the looming – and now actual – challenges from imported industrialized building.

The industry’s so-called leaders in Arlington purportedly have an often documented inability to address bad or good news publicly beyond their members in a manner that might yield greater growth.  Instead they either ignore reality with the illusion of motion or provide excuses – easily debunked for thinkers – for a lack of growth.

Meanwhile, China and other nations are producing prefabs that are making inroads into U.S. markets.

It seems that domestic builders didn’t learn the lessons of Chinese drywall? Some have forgotten how costly that fiasco was.

Nevertheless, American firms kept buying stuff and shipping jobs from the U.S. to China.  This DBN report is an important example of how properly sourcing from both the left and right can be useful, even necessary.

The Soros has taken on Facebook this year, among other issues. But the far greater threat, says progressive mega-billionaire George Soros, is China’s tech, economic, and other power.  His recent comments at the tony Davos conference of global leaders about China sounded much like an episode of right-of-center Tucker Carlson on Fox News.

Listen to Carlson, then read Soros’ comments.  Facts are facts, regardless of the source.

Soros billions make his words and movements news. So this stark warning from Soros – whom this publication has periodically critiqued – represents an interesting partial pivot.

Let’s see some pull-quotes from Soros’ address at Davos, followed by his entire speech.  Each bullet is a quote from the full text, below.

  • Last year when I stood before you I spent most of my time analyzing the nefarious role of the IT monopolies. This is what I said: “An alliance is emerging between authoritarian states and the large data rich IT monopolies that bring together nascent systems of corporate surveillance with an already developing system of state sponsored surveillance. This may well result in a web of totalitarian control the likes of which not even George Orwell could have imagined.”
  • Tonight I want to call attention to the mortal danger facing open societies from the instruments of control that machine learning and artificial intelligence can put in the hands of repressive regimes. I’ll focus on China, where Xi Jinping wants a one-party state to reign supreme.
  • China isn’t the only authoritarian regime in the world, but it’s undoubtedly the wealthiest, strongest and most developed in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of those who believe in the concept of open society. But Xi isn’t alone. Authoritarian regimes are proliferating all over the world and if they succeed, they will become totalitarian.

As noted, there are several points that MHProNews’ would editorially disagree with Soros, and longtime readers know we’ve critiqued Soros before.  But we believe in a ‘wheat and chaff’ approach, you take truth wherever you find it.

Much of what follows are facts that go beyond the left-right ideological divide. After the video is the speech, per Soros’ own website.

Remarks delivered at the World Economic Forum

Davos, Switzerland, January 24, 2019

Good evening and thank you all for coming.

I want to use my time tonight to warn the world about an unprecedented danger that’s threatening the very survival of open societies.

Last year when I stood before you I spent most of my time analyzing the nefarious role of the IT monopolies.

Tonight I want to call attention to the mortal danger facing open societies from the instruments of control that machine learning and artificial intelligence can put in the hands of repressive regimes. I’ll focus on China, where Xi Jinping wants a one-party state to reign supreme.

A lot of things have happened since last year and I’ve learned a lot about the shape that totalitarian control is going to take in China.

All the rapidly expanding information available about a person is going to be consolidated in a centralized database to create a “social credit system.” Based on that data, people will be evaluated by algorithms that will determine whether they pose a threat to the one-party state. People will then be treated accordingly.

The social credit system is not yet fully operational, but it’s clear where it’s heading. It will subordinate the fate of the individual to the interests of the one-party state in ways unprecedented in history.

I find the social credit system frightening and abhorrent. Unfortunately, some Chinese find it rather attractive because it provides information and services that aren’t currently available and can also protect law-abiding citizens against enemies of the state.

China isn’t the only authoritarian regime in the world, but it’s undoubtedly the wealthiest, strongest and most developed in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of those who believe in the concept of open society. But Xi isn’t alone. Authoritarian regimes are proliferating all over the world and if they succeed, they will become totalitarian.

As the founder of the Open Society Foundations, I’ve devoted my life to fighting totalizing, extremist ideologies, which falsely claim that the ends justify the means. I believe that the desire of people for freedom can’t be repressed forever. But I also recognize that open societies are profoundly endangered at present.

What I find particularly disturbing is that the instruments of control developed by artificial intelligence give an inherent advantage to authoritarian regimes over open societies. For them, instruments of control provide a useful tool; for open societies, they pose a mortal threat.

I use “open society” as shorthand for a society in which the rule of law prevails as opposed to rule by a single individual and where the role of the state is to protect human rights and individual freedom. In my personal view, an open society should pay special attention to those who suffer from discrimination or social exclusion and those who can’t defend themselves.

By contrast, authoritarian regimes use whatever instruments of control they possess to maintain themselves in power at the expense of those whom they exploit and suppress.

How can open societies be protected if these new technologies give authoritarian regimes a built-in advantage? That’s the question that preoccupies me. And it should also preoccupy all those who prefer to live in an open society.

Open societies need to regulate companies that produce instruments of control, while authoritarian regimes can declare them “national champions.” That’s what has enabled some Chinese state-owned companies to catch up with and even surpass the multinational giants.

This, of course, isn’t the only problem that should concern us today. For instance, man-made climate change threatens the very survival of our civilization. But the structural disadvantage that confronts open societies is a problem which has preoccupied me and I’d like to share with you my ideas on how to deal with it.

My deep concern for this issue arises out of my personal history. I was born in Hungary in 1930 and I’m Jewish. I was 13 years old when the Nazis occupied Hungary and started deporting Jews to extermination camps.

I was very fortunate because my father understood the nature of the Nazi regime and arranged false identity papers and hiding places for all members of his family, and for a number of other Jews as well. Most of us survived.

The year 1944 was the formative experience of my life. I learned at an early age how important it is what kind of political regime prevails. When the Nazi regime was replaced by Soviet occupation I left Hungary as soon as I could and found refuge in England.

At the London School of Economics I developed my conceptual framework under the influence of my mentor, Karl Popper. That framework proved to be unexpectedly useful when I found myself a job in the financial markets. The framework had nothing to do with finance, but it is based on critical thinking. This allowed me to analyze the deficiencies of the prevailing theories guiding institutional investors. I became a successful hedge fund manager and I prided myself on being the best paid critic in the world.

Running a hedge fund was very stressful. When I had made more money than I needed for myself or my family, I underwent a kind of midlife crisis. Why should I kill myself to make more money? I reflected long and hard on what I really cared about and in 1979 I set up the Open Society Fund. I defined its objectives as helping to open up closed societies, reducing the deficiencies of open societies and promoting critical thinking.

My first efforts were directed at undermining the apartheid system in South Africa. Then I turned my attention to opening up the Soviet system. I set up a joint venture with the Hungarian Academy of Science, which was under Communist control, but its representatives secretly sympathized with my efforts. This arrangement succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. I got hooked on what I like to call “political philanthropy.” That was in 1984.

In the years that followed, I tried to replicate my success in Hungary and in other Communist countries. I did rather well in the Soviet empire, including the Soviet Union itself, but in China it was a different story.

My first effort in China looked rather promising. It involved an exchange of visits between Hungarian economists who were greatly admired in the Communist world, and a team from a newly established Chinese think tank which was eager to learn from the Hungarians.

Based on that initial success, I proposed to Chen Yizi, the leader of the think tank, to replicate the Hungarian model in China. Chen obtained the support of Premier Zhao Ziyang and his reform-minded policy secretary Bao Tong.

A joint venture called the China Fund was inaugurated in October 1986. It was an institution unlike any other in China. On paper, it had complete autonomy.

Bao Tong was its champion. But the opponents of radical reforms, who were numerous, banded together to attack him. They claimed that I was a CIA agent and asked the internal security agency to investigate. To protect himself, Zhao Ziyang replaced Chen Yizi with a high-ranking official in the external security police. The two organizations were co-equal and they couldn’t interfere in each other’s affairs.

I approved this change because I was annoyed with Chen Yizi for awarding too many grants to members of his own institute and I was unaware of the political infighting behind the scenes. But applicants to the China Fund soon noticed that the organization had come under the control of the political police and started to stay away. Nobody had the courage to explain to me the reason for it.

Eventually, a Chinese grantee visited me in New York and told me, at considerable risk to himself. Soon thereafter, Zhao Ziyang was removed from power and I used that excuse to close the foundation. This happened just before the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 and it left a “black spot” on the record of the people associated with the foundation. They went to great length to clear their names and eventually they succeeded.

In retrospect, it’s clear that I made a mistake in trying to establish a foundation which operated in ways that were alien to people in China. At that time, giving a grant created a sense of mutual obligation between the donor and recipient and obliged both of them to remain loyal to each other forever.

So much for history. Let me now turn to the events that occurred in the last year, some of which surprised me.

When I first started going to China, I met many people in positions of power who were fervent believers in the principles of open society. In their youth they had been deported to the countryside to be re-educated, often suffering hardships far greater than mine in Hungary. But they survived and we had much in common. We had all been on the receiving end of a dictatorship.

They were eager to learn about Karl Popper’s thoughts on the open society. While they found the concept very appealing, their interpretation remained somewhat different from mine. They were familiar with Confucian tradition, but there was no tradition of voting in China. Their thinking remained hierarchical and carried a built-in respect for high office. I, on the other hand I was more egalitarian and wanted everyone to have a vote.

So, I wasn’t surprised when Xi Jinping ran into serious opposition at home; but I was surprised by the form it took. At last summer’s leadership convocation at the seaside resort of Beidaihe, Xi Jinping was apparently taken down a peg or two. Although there was no official communique, rumor had it that the convocation disapproved of the abolition of term limits and the cult of personality that Xi had built around himself.

It’s important to realize that such criticisms were only a warning to Xi about his excesses, but did not reverse the lifting of the two-term limit. Moreover, “The Thought of Xi Jinping,” which he promoted as his distillation of Communist theory was elevated to the same level as the “Thought of Chairman Mao.” So Xi remains the supreme leader, possibly for lifetime. The ultimate outcome of the current political infighting remains unresolved.

I’ve been concentrating on China, but open societies have many more enemies, Putin’s Russia foremost among them. And the most dangerous scenario is when these enemies conspire with, and learn from, each other on how to better oppress their people.

The question poses itself, what can we do to stop them?

The first step is to recognize the danger. That’s why I’m speaking out tonight. But now comes the difficult part. Those of us who want to preserve the open society must work together and form an effective alliance. We have a task that can’t be left to governments.

History has shown that even governments that want to protect individual freedom have many other interests and they also give precedence to the freedom of their own citizens over the freedom of the individual as a general principle.

My Open Society Foundations are dedicated to protecting human rights, especially for those who don’t have a government defending them. When we started four decades ago there were many governments which supported our efforts but their ranks have thinned out. The US and Europe were our strongest allies, but now they’re preoccupied with their own problems.

Therefore, I want to focus on what I consider the most important question for open societies: what will happen in China?

The question can be answered only by the Chinese people. All we can do is to draw a sharp distinction between them and Xi Jinping. Since Xi has declared his hostility to open society, the Chinese people remain our main source of hope.

And there are, in fact, grounds for hope. As some China experts have explained to me, there is a Confucian tradition, according to which advisors of the emperor are expected to speak out when they strongly disagree with one of his actions or decrees, even if that it may result in exile or execution.

This came as a great relief to me when I had been on the verge of despair. The committed defenders of open society in China, who are around my age, have mostly retired and their places have been taken by younger people who are dependent on Xi Jinping for promotion. But a new political elite has emerged that is willing to uphold the Confucian tradition. This means that Xi will continue to have a political opposition at home.

Xi presents China as a role model for other countries to emulate, but he’s facing criticism not only at home but also abroad. His Belt and Road Initiative has been in operation long enough to reveal its deficiencies.

It was designed to promote the interests of China, not the interests of the recipient countries; its ambitious infrastructure projects were mainly financed by loans, not by grants, and foreign officials were often bribed to accept them. Many of these projects proved to be uneconomic.

The iconic case is in Sri Lanka. China built a port that serves its strategic interests. It failed to attract sufficient commercial traffic to service the debt and enabled China to take possession of the port. There are several similar cases elsewhere and they’re causing widespread resentment.

Malaysia is leading the pushback. The previous government headed by Najib Razak sold out to China but in May 2018 Razak was voted out of office by a coalition led by Mahathir Mohamed. Mahathir immediately stopped several big infrastructure projects and is currently negotiating with China how much compensation Malaysia will still have to pay.

The situation is not as clear-cut in Pakistan, which has been the largest recipient of Chinese investments. The Pakistani army is fully beholden to China but the position of Imran Khan who became prime minister last August is more ambivalent. At the beginning of 2018, China and Pakistan announced grandiose plans in military cooperation. By the end of the year, Pakistan was in a deep financial crisis. But one thing became evident: China intends to use the Belt and Road Initiative for military purposes as well.

All these setbacks have forced Xi Jinping to modify his attitude toward the Belt and Road Initiative. In September, he announced that “vanity projects” will be shunned in favor of more carefully conceived initiatives and in October, the People’s Daily warned that projects should serve the interests of the recipient countries.

Customers are now forewarned and several of them, ranging from Sierra Leone to Ecuador, are questioning or renegotiating projects.

Most importantly, the US government has now identified China as a “strategic rival.” President Trump is notoriously unpredictable, but this decision was the result of a carefully prepared plan. Since then, the idiosyncratic behavior of Trump has been largely superseded by a China policy adopted by the agencies of the administration and overseen by Asian affairs advisor of the National Security Council Matt Pottinger and others. The policy was outlined in a seminal speech by Vice President Mike Pence on October 4th.

Even so, declaring China a strategic rival is too simplistic. China is an important global actor. An effective policy towards China can’t be reduced to a slogan.

It needs to be far more sophisticated, detailed and practical; and it must include an American economic response to the Belt and Road Initiative. The Pottinger plan doesn’t answer the question whether its ultimate goal is to level the playing field or to disengage from China altogether.

Xi Jinping fully understood the threat that the new US policy posed for his leadership. He gambled on a personal meeting with President Trump at the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires. In the meantime, the danger of global trade war escalated and the stock market embarked on a serious sell-off in December. This created problems for Trump who had concentrated all his efforts on the 2018 midterm elections. When Trump and Xi met, both sides were eager for a deal. No wonder that they reached one, but it’s very inconclusive: a ninety-day truce.

In the meantime, there are clear indications that a broad based economic decline is in the making in China, which is affecting the rest of the world. A global slowdown is the last thing the market wants to see.

The unspoken social contract in China is built on steadily rising living standards. If the decline in the Chinese economy and stock market is severe enough, this social contract may be undermined and even the business community may turn against Xi Jinping. Such a downturn could also sound the death knell of the Belt and Road Initiative, because Xi may run out of resources to continue financing so many lossmaking investments.

On the question of global internet governance, there’s an undeclared struggle between the West and China. China wants to dictate rules and procedures that govern the digital economy by dominating the developing world with its new platforms and technologies. This is a threat to the freedom of the Internet and indirectly open society itself.

Last year I still believed that China ought to be more deeply embedded in the institutions of global governance, but since then Xi Jinping’s behavior has changed my opinion.  My present view is that instead of waging a trade war with practically the whole world, the US should focus on China. Instead of letting  ZTE and Huawei off lightly, it needs to crack down on them. If these companies came to dominate the 5G market, they would present an unacceptable security risk for the rest of the world.

Regrettably, President Trump seems to be following a different course: make concessions to China and declare victory while renewing his attacks on US allies. This is liable to undermine the US policy objective of curbing China’s abuses and excesses.

To conclude, let me summarize the message I’m delivering tonight. My key point is that the combination of repressive regimes with IT monopolies endows those regimes with a built-in advantage over open societies. The instruments of control are useful tools in the hands of authoritarian regimes, but they pose a mortal threat to open societies.

China is not the only authoritarian regime in the world but it is the wealthiest, strongest and technologically most advance. This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of open societies. That’s why it’s so important to distinguish Xi Jinping’s policies from the aspirations of the Chinese people. The social credit system, if it became operational, would give Xi total control over the people. Since Xi is the most dangerous enemy of the open society, we must pin our hopes on the Chinese people, and especially on the business community and a political elite willing to uphold the Confucian tradition.

This doesn’t mean that those of us who believe in the open society should remain passive. The reality is that we are in a Cold War that threatens to turn into a hot one. On the other hand, if Xi and Trump were no longer in power, an opportunity would present itself to develop greater cooperation between the two cyber-superpowers.

It is possible to dream of something similar to the United Nations Treaty that arose out of the Second World War. This would be the appropriate ending to the current cycle of conflict between the US and China. It would reestablish international cooperation and allow open societies to flourish. That sums up my message.

”Your Time is Up, White People” SA Politician Declares, Stirring Up Unrest Impacts MHVille, USA

December 10th, 2018 Comments off

It’s your own personal rights, property, and wealth that are in the crosshairs. If what is described from news accounts that follow hasn’t yet happened to you, odds are that someone at a meeting you or they attended know about just such an incident on some personal level.

Meaning, this is an underdiscussed trend already at work in the manufactured housing industry – a.k.a. MHVille.

Today’s report will start out with actual incidents from a distance – across the waters, and further south. That sets the stage for global tendencies. Then, we will walk backward toward the U.S.A. and specific ways that this is troubling trend is already at work in manufactured housing, and/or in a city or town not too far from you. Because what is a maturing problem overseas, is arguably already underway here in the U.S.A. too.

“Your Time is Up” – Whites About to Lose Big

SOUTH Africa (SA) has set a date – March 2019 – when a much-criticized land grab called “expropriations” can begin after a politician named Cyril Ramaphosa declared: “Your time is up, white people,” said the UK Daily Star.

In France, riots are spreading. They began with protests over ever-higher gas taxes – so-called “carbon taxes” tied to global warming – the science of which is surprisingly still in dispute. ICYMI or need a refresher later on, see the 5-minute expert video and related report on that issue, and how it impacts MHVille, by clicking on the linked box below.

Climate Change, Energy, Riots, and Manufactured Housing in Green Era

In oil-rich Venezuela, after a decade of socialism, the infrastructure is decaying.  That oil rich nation is now importing oil. The state grabbed – “nationalized” – their oil industry after socialists came to power about 10 years ago. Americans investors are among those who arguably lost out. But among the real losers are the Venezuelans, who after a decade of socialist control that they voted for, are now so hungry, they’ve reportedly lost an average of 19 pounds. Once one of the most prosperous nations in Latin America, Venezuela‘s economy is now a basket case. The graphic below is part of a larger report found by clicking on the linked box that follows it.

To avoid having this happen in America, “We, the People” must understand that socialism, communism, and other faux promises of ‘free stuff’ are all based upon lies. The Chinese said centuries ago, teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime, but give a man a fish, and you only feed him for a day. Working age People must Produce, that’s life. In order to encourage production, the fruits of a person’s labors must be respected.  The proper goal of government isn’t to redistribute income, rather, it is to protect personal rights, peace, and to protect private property.  Otherwise, government becomes an enemy of the people it is ideally supposed to defend.  Trade groups like MHARR and NFIB arguably understand those lessons.

How to Avoid Losing Billions, Huge Loses Reported by WSJ, Other Media

In my nation of origin, Iran, the American-backed Shah of Iran was toppled decades ago by promises to the Persian people their that ‘electricity would be free,’ and that the nation’s oil money would be ‘shared with all of the people.’ The empty promises of ‘free stuff‘ and ‘free moneynever happened. ICYMI, you can read more at the link below.

“You Made Me, Promises, Promises…” Historic Iranian, American Lessons in Freedom

Instead, the Persian people have arguably grown poorer and are now less free.

The current Iranian regime might have toppled during the 2009 ‘green’ movement against the mullahs in 2009, had then President Barack Obama deftly intervened. Mr. Obama and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not do so.  Instead, years later he cut a controversial deal that released about $100 billion to Iran, per the New York Times.  Meaning, to the very government that has kept the Iranians poorer.

What some Iranian expatriates in the U.S. have understandably called ‘fascists’ that rule Iran, are using those billions in funds released by the U.S. and others in a guerrilla war against neighboring nations, which includes the killing of Americans service members.

What was former President Obama thinking when he gave to the leaders of a nation that lies to its people, and gets large, radicalized crowds to chant “death to America” or “death to Israel” as has been seen in globally seen televised marches?

And here is how it comes closer to MHVille.  Ponder how prominent people involved in MHVille – such as Warren Buffett or Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) PAC Chair Nathan Smith – are all-in with political leaders like the former 44th president, Secretary Clinton, and typically Democratic candidates that here in America are at times also promising something allegedly ‘free’ at no cost to voters.

Nathan & Mary Lee Chance Smith, Leaders in ‘Anti-Trump Resistance,’ Manufactured Housing Impact?

The money trail from billionaires Warren Buffett and George Soros has been previously documented, as it links to groups like the problematic MHAction and better known AntiFa.  Recall, that MHProNews is for free enterprise and limited government, but sees as problematic manipulations of the American system in unjust, thumbs-on-the-scale, or crony-capitalist ways. ICYMI, you can click the linked box below for details, because we follow the facts, money, and evidence.

Prosperity Now, Protests, Indivisible Project, Warren Buffett, George Soros, POTUS Donald Trump, MHAction and Manufactured Housing – Following the Money

MHI inexplicably elevated in their purported ‘newsletter’ a policy initiative by Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA-D) that is arguably harmful to the interests of most of manufactured housing professionals. Furthermore, Senator Warren embraced those radical groups, the same ones that disrupted MHI’s own speaking event of HUD Secretary Ben Carson, MD.  What is MHI thinking?  What are Warren Buffett, his Berkshire Hathaway lieutenants that operate in manufactured housing, and leaders like Nathan Smith of SSK Communities thinking?

Expose! Why Has Warren Buffett/BH Funded Anti-MHC Activists, MHAction? Why Fund Attacks on ELS, Frank Rolfe, Blackstone Group?

Let’s give them their due.  Buffett, the Claytons, and Nathan Smith are intelligent.  So whatever they have in mind – since they continue to support the same leftist groups and policies – is there any doubt that their support to radical groups and radical politicos is intentional?

Award-winning manufactured housing legend Dick Moore, who helped launch the MHIdea independent retailer initiative, has said for the record that he was audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for political, not tax reasons, during the Obama administration.  Moore alleges that they did so as an attack of his written statements about limited government and free enterprise, among other topics he’s written about.

Here in America…AntiFa and MHAction

In the U.S., one of the better known radical groups is called AntiFa. In Manufactured Housing, it’s MHAction that has surpassed – for better or worse – the attention once given to the more mild-by-comparison national resident group, NMHOA.

Manufactured Home Resident Group President Cautions Against MHAction, Surprising Background Reveal to Manufactured Housing Action

One MHVille pro called MHProNews HQ recently to say that he’s been personally accosted by an MHAction member multiple times.

That activist MHAction member, per said MH Community owner, poked at the businessman with a walking stick – a cane – reportedly in the presence of several others.  The community owner in question feels caught, because he doesn’t want to say or do something that might cause the narrative to turn against himself.  The community owners doesn’t want him or his community to end up getting sued. So he says he is relatively passive during such incidents.

As noted, MHAction has disrupted the speech of HUD Secretary Ben Carson, MD. MHAction have protested – Blackstone, Equity LifeStyle Properties, and RV Horizons by name and/or in person – among others.

That radical group are holding organizing events. One MHAction event made the news in Illinois, pre-midterm election. Some pooh-pooh these as ‘not drawing very many attendees.’ Well, that may be true, but that misses the point. Such radical movements that toppled once-free Cuba started with only small groups too.  That same is true for each of the nations noted herein.  These radical movements begin small, gather steam, and then historically become quite potent.  One quality that they have is that they don’t stop until they win.

Satellite photos of Cuba vs South Florida, on the left, North Korea vs. South Korea on the right. The freer a society, the more productive the people, and the more prosperous the people. Radical socialist movements, by contrast, lead to impoverishing their people.

This issue may be racial in South Africa and in some areas too.  But as a woman of Middle Eastern origins, let’s note that can perhaps better be understood not so much in racial terms, but as “have nots” being stirred into action against those who have. But one must ask, who are those who are stirring the pot? And how does this pattern of activity get stopped?

The short answers are that at times, powerful forces are acting behind the scenes of such radical movements.  And as to how they are stopped, one potent answer is education and historic lessons.

First, those who are drawn into these movements are often already unhappy.  The manufactured home community owner noted above said that he sincerely believes that man who has poked at him with the walking stick is mentally unstable. Perhaps so, but either way, he’s been attracted into a group that is making false promises.  Time and again, around the world, those who make promises like those of MHAction have made fail to deliver.

In Russia just over a century ago, the Tsars (or Czars) were toppled from power by Bolsheviks who were socialists that became known as communists. The nation grew poorer as a result.  There are historical references to Western nations – including some with ties to Wall Street – supporting the Russian revolutionaries. Think about that for a few moments — successful Americans and westerner capitalists helping destabilize Russia by supporting socialists, who later turned against the West as cold war communists. Troubling, but true.

There are numerous examples of this, from a variety of sources.

In the USA, as the Daily Business News on MHProNews has previously reported, there are more people on the political left calling for “Universal Income” – free money – “free health care” and “free education.”

The Democratic party today is arguably not the same as the party of Democratic President John F. Kennedy.  President Kennedy signed taxes cuts into law, and revenues to the federal government rose.  Former Democrat, turned Republican, President Ronald Reagan (GOP), led tax cuts and revenues to the federal government rose too, as the graphics above demonstrate.

The Trump Tax Cuts has spurred more tax revenue overall. These are facts. The lower rates spur more investment.

The estimated $22 Trillion dollars spent on the War on Poverty, which turned 50 a while back, exceeds the total national debt of some 21 trillion dollars. The poverty rate was coming down in the U.S. through free enterprise. The perhaps well intentioned, but still misguided, impact of poverty programs has not proven to move the needle of poverty, as the graphic above demonstrates. Or as MHProNews publisher L. A. “Tony” Kovach said in a Masthead over a year ago, ‘whatever you subsidize, you tend to get more of it.’

Currently under former Democrat turned Republican, the 45th President of the United States (POTUS), Donald J. Trump, tax cuts passed last year have already sparked precisely the same trend as occurred during the Democratic President Kennedy and Republican President Reagan. So why is that trend under-reported by much of the mainstream media?

Part of the solution for our industry and our nation is to cut regulations, taxes, and to cut the size and scope of the federal government.  To minimize disruption, that process takes time.

But that process of taking billions of dollars away from deep-pocket groups that buy votes to get what they want from the federal government is underway. It’s President Trump and those aligned with him – not MHI – that got the roll backs of S2155.  Some key powers behind MHI – such as Warren Buffett and Nathan Smith – are openly for more big government, while MHI claims to be working for reduced regulations?  Once the facts are laid out, aren’t some of MHI’s claims blatantly misleading?

That process of subsidized housing and the like has demonstrably cost manufactured housing billions of dollars a year, and has cost our nation trillions of dollars over the years. It also creates an avoidable underclass, which tend to vote Democratic, because they are the ones promising more ‘free stuff.’

Tye explained that public housing – an entitlement – often yields addiction. Ownership vs. renting or living in “projects” leads to integrity, a view he likens to those of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Columbia Point Housing Project had near the end of its first life cycle only some 300 housing units that were habitable. That’s the same number Donald Tye, Jr. used in his example to describe the better way for people, and government. Quality, affordable single family manufactured homes.

The manufactured home industry must realize that however imperfect any politician is – and they are all human, and thus all imperfect – the most pro-manufactured housing industry politico since 2000 is demonstrably POTUS Donald J. Trump.    The video on the report found on the page linked below shows the president, the first lady, Vice President Mike Pence, and other officials in Florida, touring a manufactured home community.  President Trump is mingling with residents, and talking about ‘the good people‘ living in that manufactured home community.

“I knew right from the beginning.” When President Trump, First Lady Melania, VP Pence Toured Manufactured Home Community

Where was there any similar trip by President Obama to a manufactured home community?

Instead, the Obama administration imposed heavy new regulatory burdens on the manufactured housing side of the affordable housing industry.  Apparently, those burdens are what Warren Buffett, the Claytons, their affiliated lenders, Nathan Smith and others involved at MHI want, because that is what campaign donations indicate they have often politically supported.

Protests of manufactured housing industry firms or leaders like HUD Secretary Carson – like the ones shown in the video below – are de facto being funded by big Democratic donors, like billionaires Warren Buffett and George Soros.

Do you see why a growing number of people within MHI are questioning their own organization? Why more are at MHI are seeing that trade body as a Berkshire Hathaway-led front group, instead of a lobbying group that is working on behalf of the majority of manufactured housing independents?

“It’s a Terrible Idea,” Comments from Manufactured Home Community Owners, Senior Management, and Investors

With that backdrop, now flashback to the video interview at Tunica with former president Danny Ghorbani, and current President and CEO Mark Weiss, JD, with the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR).  Do you see why MHARR’s staff leaders think that the Trump Administration is better for the industry than the prior one was?

Housing and the Policies of Much of the Left’s Leaders

Keep in mind that these leftist groups are making claims and promises about housing too.  As a community owner told MHProNews, the biggest competition for our industry for decades has been subsidized housing.  Those who promise that are running counter to the interests of the vast majority of manufactured housing professionals.  In as much as it traps people in poverty, it is bad for Americans too.  See what the manufactured housing advocate, the Rev. Donald Tye, Jr. said in his in-depth video interview, linked here.

Facts & Analysis – Senator Elizabeth Warren re: Manufactured Housing Institute Memo to MHI Members, 10-3-2018

As or more important, those promises from the left run counter to the interests of tens of millions of Americans who want to own, but are stuck in rentals instead.  See that report, by clicking the box linked below.

The American Dream, Arguably Among the Most Profitable, But Least Understood Stories in the USA Today

These are not matters of mere opinion, to be shrugged off lightly.  The facts, evidence, and money trail are being revealed, step-by-step.

Then look at who is rising on the left in the Democratic Party in America…

Once the issues are better understood, the vast majority of the nation could come together on a range of issues that span racial, political, religious, or other group labels. As some in the GOP have noted, President Trump isn’t a classic Republican. He’s spans the left-right divide in several ways with pragmatic policies that are arguably based upon the American ideals of life, liberty, and property.

Openly “Democratic Socialist” candidates are coming into office, like the already well-known Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-D), or her longtime forerunner, Bernie Sander (VT-I, but caucuses with the Democrats).

Former DNC Chair Donna Brazile said that the primary was rigged against Senator Sanders. There is evidence to suggest that the powers of the federal government were being used to tilt the election in favor of Secretary Clinton and against then candidate, Donald J. Trump.

We in MHVille can, should, and must learn from what is happening in France, South Africa, and Venezuela.

Propaganda is demonstrably being fed to the masses, and millions are ‘buying into it.’ In MHVille, MHI has arguably weaponized their information to their members. While it would be inaccurate to say that all news is fake, or that all MHI news is propaganda.  But there is more than enough of it that is weaponized or demonstrably inaccurate, so that our industry’s professionals – and the nation – are increasingly looking askance at MHI or mainstream news.

MHProNews’ parent operation demonstrated to MHI over the course of years options for lending, and ways to improve the industry’s image. For years, even though our parent operation was an MHI member – and showed the way to grow business – MHI leaders ignored those options. Why? Could it be that slow growth allowed more consolidation of businesses, and at a cheaper price?

Explosive Comments on Duty to Serve Manufactured Housing Lending from Well Placed Sources

Affordable Housing, the Visible, Yet Mysterious Struggle for an Obvious Solution, Case Examples

November 10th, 2018 Comments off

It was then best of times,

it was the worst of times…”

–      Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities.

Dickens was writing about the French Revolution, but considering the famous opening to his novel, “A Tale or Two Cities,” one might believe that Nostradamus was writing about the USA today, including the struggle for affordable housing.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,”  said George Santayana.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.[2]” wrote Dickens, according to Wikipedia.

In and around presumptive incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s (CA-D) district of San Francisco, there is wealth and poverty. Some of the most expensive real estate in the nation is found there. The homeless defecating on the street is common enough that online maps are available identifying areas to be avoided if you don’t want  to see piles of poop, or the discarded needles of drug addicts.

Welcome to 21st century America.  It is the best and worst of times, all within blocks of each other.

Affordable housing is symptomatic of a variety of interrelated problems. The problems and the solutions are arguably known. Indeed, some years ago, MHLivingNews published an article with a video interview running concurrently with home tours that made the case that the solution to the affordable housing crisis is hiding in plain sight. That phrase was popular enough that others in media have used that line since.

“The Solution to the Affordable Housing Crisis is Hiding in Plain Sight”

Solutions are known, but the problems persist. Why?

MHProNews has been peeling back layers of that puzzling onion over the course of several years. It could be summed up like this. Certain special interests believe they benefit from the current state of affairs. Since it is more than one interest group, depending on the person(s) or organization(s) they are affiliated with, they will fight on several levels to maintain a status quo that has made them millions to billions of dollars.

Where Bernie and the Donald Agreed

Some of the richest people on earth, our fellow Americans, are benefiting from a system that both then-presidential candidates, Bernie Sanders and Donald J. Trump, called “a rigged system.”

If the right and left both see the system as rigged, it begs the question.  Why can’t the two parties solve the issues?

Arguably, because one side benefits more from the rigged system, the other party less so. But each major party has powerful members that believe they benefit from their vision of a morphing status quo. “Draining the Swamp” created over a period of decades isn’t going to be an overnight event.  What took years to create, will take years to accomplish.

The solution always begins by understanding the true nature of the problem.

Value Penguin published a useful introduction to the issue.  It was co-authored by small-town business expert Tom Egelhoff and L.A. ‘Tony’ Kovach, the latter is this report’s writer too.  Fear, Manufactured Homes, and a Solution to the Affordable Housing Crisis is found at the link below.

That column linked above takes several expert views and facts, and makes the case that the lack of affordable housing where its needed costs the U.S. economy some $2 trillion dollars annually in lost gross domestic product (GDP).

Stop right there. Imagine what $2 trillion dollars more GDP could mean to everyday Americans. With approaching 330,000,000 people in the U.S., that would be about $6,000 per every man, woman and child. The typical family of four would average some $24,000 more per household annually.

Put differently, solving affordable housing could be a similar or greater economic stimulus than the tax cuts. And as “Fear” explains, it can all be done using existing laws. That’s the beauty of it. No need to wait years for debating a solution.

Clearly, some would benefit more, others less, from having more affordable housing. But affordable housing in or near the places where homes are needed most would unlock greater opportunities. Investors, existing housing owners, and others waiting to buy could all benefit.

All but a few would benefit from unrigging the system.

This approach may be especially useful to renters. HUD Secretary Carson said several times in 2017 that renters have an average net worth of $5000. Home owners have an average worth of some $200,000.

That $195,000 difference over time for home owners represents real wealth to potentially millions of people.

YIMBY vs. NIMBY, Obama Admin Concept Could Unlock $1.95 Trillion Annually, HUD & MH Impact

But instead, there are tens of millions who are locked out of an appealing ownership opportunity by a system skewed by problematic zoning and discriminatory housing regulatory barriers.

The law of supply and demand is at work. High demand, limited supply, so prices are rising, often faster than wages.

Collage by MHProNews.

There are protests in the streets in various places. Some carry signs proclaiming that the rent is “too damn high.” Those who protest arguably often misunderstand the true causes and logical cures.

Millions of minds out of ignorance and desperation turn to those who promise a purported “solution.” But the claimed “solution” of self-proclaimed “Democratic Socialists” is one proven to be false. Nevertheless, those Bernie-followers took root.

In the midterms some of those self-proclaimed Democratic Socialists won, including Senator Sanders. Sit up and take notice. Because if those growing numbers of socialists get their way, whose property will they tax and take?

Communism is the scavenger that comes when a society begins to rot from the inside,” taught the American anti-communist, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

Sheen grasped that free enterprise and the genius of constitutionally limited government. He supported the American Republic. His talks were educational, and listeners of all faiths – or no faith at all – made his pioneering television broadcast more popular than numerous other shows. When he was awarded the Emmy, Sheen cleverly thanked his writers, “Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.”

The genius of Sheen was blending the lessons of history and reason, working together for a better society, guided by the light of faith. He was a compelling educator.

Hold that thought. Because the path ahead for our industry and the nation is an educational one.

Education – hopefully sound information packaged in a reasonable and compelling way – is appealing.

The goal isn’t to blind political or other opponents. Rather, the wise solution is to help the uniformed or misinformed to see the light of truth. Those who grasp the truth have a duty to share it.

The alternative is a growing, dangerous, and costly chaos.

An eye for an eye only makes the world blind,” is one of the ways that Mahatma Ghandi is said to explain a misunderstood lesson from the book of Exodus. Ghandi and Exodus were both right, the punishment should fit the crime, but it’s better in love to avoid the crime in the first place.  That insight requires a morally informed and grounded people.

It’s an educational matter. And history tells us that like all other education, it must be a sustained effort.

Not Fake Nazis, the Real Deal

There are several economic and political connections with affordable housing.  Ignore that at the same peril as one ignores the law of gravity when standing at the edge of a cliff.

Lies or half-truths told often enough will convince millions. That’s been true long before Abraham Lincoln said, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

My parents lived in Hungary during the Nazi occupation of their country. They lived the reality of the real SS. They knew what took place in neighboring Germany that brought Adolf Hitler to power in the early 1930s. They were well educated, and knew they were getting some false news. But after the war, they told their growing family that they discovered just how much propaganda the Nazis had put forth.

The Nazis demonized their made-up boogeymen. The Nazis used brownshirts as street thugs who were their Socialist party’s political enforcers. It’s a shrewd-but-misguided modern American deception to call a Nazi a ‘right wing extremist,’ because Hitler’s minions were “National Socialists,” or “Nazi.”

Rephrased, the Nazis were from the political left.

The Nazis did not believe in a U.S.-style, constitutionally limited government. And just as Nazi Germany ended up going to war against their one-time allies against Poland, the communist (socialists) of Soviet Russia, the new socialists of our day will in time turn against their allies too. Allies of the modern left? Take notice of that historic lesson.  Once the socialists come to full power, history routinely reveals the powerful socialists in government strive to eliminate their then unnecessary allies.

The Nazis were political gangsters. What follows will be a hard set of facts for many to swallow. People are wont to change their minds, until reality makes them do so. If you can find a factual error, you’re hereby invited to send a response, and your sources for it.

Saul Alinksy, author of Rules for Radicals, credit, Wikipedia.

The Nazis had some commonality to Saul Alinsky and his Rules for Radicals. Alinsky’s book was dedicated to Lucifer (Satan, the devil), he learned his confidence (con game) and other criminal activity from the mob. Those criminal tactics were then applied to politics.

Alinsky’s “Rules” inspired Hillary Rodham, who later became a Clinton.

In 1969, Ms. Rodham wrote a 92 page paper, says Wikipedia, on the Alinsky model, entitled “There is Only the Fight.” According to the Washington Examiner in 2012, “Obama received a comprehensive course in Saul Alinsky during his years as a community organizer in Chicago…”

From the now-defunct ACORN, which then Barry Obama did legal work on behalf of, sprang the New York Communities for Change. That in turn spawned MHAction. Welcome to the trail to an activist, left-wing opponent to our world of affordable housing. Hold that thought, we’ll return to it.

The Historic Pattern

The surprising-to-millions reality is that Democratic political operatives have used similar tactics of thuggery and de facto protection rackets for well over a century. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) we’re racist Democrats. The KKK was the terror arm of the Democrats. Who says? Among others, an African-American Professor.

The Nazis learned what they did in part from American Democrats, sad to say.

The period of so-called “yellow journalism” in the U.S. was an element in how Democratic President Woodrow Wilson worked with enough of the U.S. newspapers to manipulate and gin up the desire for entering the war he promised to keep Americans out of. Wilson allowed the shipment of military supplies to the Allies to cross the Atlantic in passenger ships. It was only a question of time before the Germans sank one of those ships. The outcry that enthused when a ship was sunk led the U.S. population into its first Great War in Europe.

The passenger ship Lusitania was carrying munitions when it was sunk by a German submarine in May 1915, documents released by the British Government have revealed,” said Centenary News, on May 2, 2014.

The system of media and manipulation is nothing new. There are more kinds of media today than a century ago, but the principles are the same. Those who don’t learn the history of media manipulation are condemned to relive the costly lessons.

Rush Limbaugh recently celebrated 30 years on the air. His audience is up to some 26 million listeners. He’s the self-proclaimed “…big voice on the right,” for good reason. No other TV or radio audience rivals his. Rush has said time and again that conservatives and those on the right don’t think like the leaders on the political left do. That’s an important vantage-point.

Good! You See It Differently!”

Stephen Covey, author of the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People wrote, “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are──or, as we are conditioned to see it.”

Former President Barack Obama has said something similar.

If you watch Fox News, you are living on a different planet than you are if you, you know, listen to NPR,” said the Hill. “Those who watch Fox News and those who read The New York Times occupy completely different realities,” he said, adding that the network portrays him in “weird ways.”

There is some truth in what he’s [former President Obama] saying in this regard,” Fox News host Sean Hannity said. “He’s right, the mainstream media, they want to destroy [President] Trump and they loved him [former President Barack Obama]. It’s that simple.”

It is that simple, but that’s also the challenge. That’s part of the ‘tale of two cities.’ In a polarized nation, where millions believe that the leaders of the political left and their media allies are correct, and millions of others believe they are wrong, what’s to be done?

Full Measure’s Sharyl Attiksson’s media bias chart is useful in sorting out the agendas behind various headlines and news sources.

Patient, persistent, properly informed education is the answer. Limbaugh has said recently he hammers away at topics he’s covered for years, hoping to slowly win over some. Clearly, his audience growth means he’s successful at that effort. The solution in part is more of what’s proven to work, persuasive, fact-and-evidence-based educational engagement.

In writing this or any other article and report, let’s note again. If one sees a demonstrable factual error, by all means, we’ve asked readers for years to let us know. In fact, we’ve directly invited those who benefit from the purportedly rigged system in our industry, the Claytons and the Berkshire Hathaway ‘front men’ to engage in a public video recorded discussion. They have declined every time.

If the truth is on their side, why duck or dodge discussion or debate? Why would they miss an opportunity to publicly disprove or make a fool of this writer, if they can do so with facts and evidence?

But the quote in the subheading above applies. To understand another, one must meet them where they are. ‘Good, you see it differently,’ said Covey. Explain your thinking to me. Let’s examine it, together. Let’s discuss it politely and reasonably.

But that’s not what many on the left want.

Ben Shapiro offered to debate now Congressional Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Cortez declined, with a dodge. If Cortez is correct and confident in her socialist views, why not debate Shapiro? It would draw millions of viewers, including many millennials. Could it be that Cortez and her leftist backers don’t want to awaken the millennials and the younger generation?

A Useful Hungarian Maxim – “Aki Mondta: Te Voltál, Te Vagy” – Explained

There’s a Magyar (Hungarian) expression my parents taught us siblings. “Aki mondta: te voltál, te vagy“ It roughly means, ‘the one who is making the accusation is the party guilty of the alleged offense.’

It’s one if the oldest tricks. Let’s look at some contemporary examples.

  • Accuse your opponent of being the ‘Nazi,’ when it is the leftist side that has paid and volunteer members of thug-like misnamed AntiFa groups.  Where do you see the Tea Party, Conservatives, or Trump supporters donning masks and smashing people and property?
  • Accuse your opponent of being a racist, when the accusers themselves benefit from race-baiting.
  • Or the “Affordable Care Act,” which was not affordable medical care at all. Jon Grubber, the Architect for ObamaCare said as much. He blamed ‘the stupidity of the American voter’ for buying the ObamaCare – the ‘Affordable Care Act’ lie. Yet it was Thomas Sowell who in a single paragraph proved why it would never work, based upon simple logic.
Thomas Sowell, Ph.D. Economist, Thinker,

Collage credit, Wikipedia and

Analogies and examples are the tools needed to help people connect to realities that they don’t understand, or have been mislead into believing.  How was the action in the video above any different than what Hitler’s brownshirts behaved?

But reality-checks and patient but persistent charity must be at the core of the responses.

For instance, let’s admit that it’s true that America was imperfect from its founding. But that racial division of slavery sadly existed in every part of the world. Whites who came to the U.S. were often indentured servants for periods of some 7 years. Blacks were often lifetime ‘property’ of their owners.  But as Dinesh D’Souza correctly points out, there were free blacks too, and some of them were slave owners of other African Americans.

Tragic, but true.

America ended slavery before many other nations did. The lesson? Taking a piece of history out of context can be as bad as not knowing history at all.

Since President Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, freed the slaves – today bondage is arguably tied to economic barriers. The invisible economic bondage of manipulated capital, regulations, and laws can be as heavy a chain as the one that bolted people who knew they were captives on ships bound for America.

Don’t believe it? Tour the parts of San Francisco or other places where the addicted or other homeless live on the streets. It’s a tale of two cities, because millions failed to grasp the lessons of Hosea the Hebrew prophet, who spoke for God in saying “My people perish for a lack of understanding…” (Hosea 4:6).

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC and Organizing Protests

For those on the left, former President Barack Obama is correct.  Listen to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and you have a very different view of national events than those who listen to Fox News.  We surf and read a range of media, so our knowledge is first hand.

The protestors who were organized to “defend” Jeff Sessions and the Mueller probe when President Donald J. Trump fired Sessions and appointed his chief of staff to run the DOJ on an interim level.  Those protestors purportedly included those who are renters or struggling for affordable housing. Those protests are organized as a coalition of many groups – including, per sources, NY Communities for Change and MHAction – brought together in fairly rapid order by the tens, hundreds, and thousands.

They believe that the 45th President of the United States (POTUS) Donald J. Trump is a stooge if the Russians. Never mind that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the one that the evidence points to that has ties to the Russians, in a uranium sales deal the Clinton Foundation profited from. Never mind that the same law firm – Perkins Coie – tied to the Democratic “recount” effort in Broward County FL is the same firm that hired Fusion GPS to correct a semi-fictional “dossier” used to illicitly get an investigation of the Trump Campaign. And that in those dark crevices of the infamous dossier, are some Russians who obliquely helped the Clintons against now President Trump.

Let’s look at another item MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow retweeted.

What is demonstrable fiction is believed as fact by millions, why? Because ‘news sources’ like MSNBC and others on the political left has said the words “Trump-Russia Collusion” so often, they won’t listen to Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, a Democrat, who said there is no such law barring what’s alleged, and there is no evidence for the claim, even if there was such a crime.  Rephrased, millions of Americans have been conned into believing something that simply isn’t real.

It’s back the principle of Hitler’s propaganda minister, Joseph Goebels, who said that ‘if you say a lie big enough, often enough, people will believe it.’ Goebbels and President Lincoln see that narrow point similarly.

Maddow used sarcasm to deflect the one line critique of the Drudge Report. But note she doesn’t really address Drudge’s point.

Note too that during that same time-frame, AntiFa protesters went to Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s home, terrorizing his wife, chanting ‘we know where you sleep,’ breaking their front door, and spray painting their logo on Carlson’s driveway. See the WaPo video, posted further above.

Maddow found time to tweet or retweet links to nationwide protests. But during that protest organizing timeframe, Maddow failed to tweet any admonishment to those AntiFa thugs.

Isn’t it hypocritical of Maddow – or her a number of her peers – to cast blame on the 45th President for his tone? Why did Maddow and so many on the left fail to verbally rebuke those who oppose the free speech rights of Carlson, with threats of violence?  Every violent act, the president has condemned.  Where is Maddow and her fellow liberals condemnation of Antifa, and what they did to Tucker Carlson’s wife?

Aki mondta: te voltál, te vagy” = ‘the one who is making the accusation is the party guilty of the alleged offense.’   The AntiFa thugs, their billionaire background backers, and media enablers may not coordinate in a smoke-filled back room. But they share a common world-view. That world view that Mr. Obama, Sean Hannity both noted is again summed up by 7 Habits author Covey like this:

We see the world, not as it is, but as we are──or, as we are conditioned to see it.”

For the facts on the multimillion money trail from men like Buffett and Soros to those who organized and run this week’s protests, see the report, linked below.

Prosperity Now, Protests, Indivisible Project, Warren Buffett, George Soros, POTUS Donald Trump, MHAction and Manufactured Housing – Following the Money

The Dots Being Connected

Maddow likes to mock, another favorite leftist tactic my parents taught us kids to look for and be able to respond to wisely. President Trump was arguably correct in saying that Tuesday’s midterms was a victory. Each side won something. And the next two years will clarify – for those who make or share the case – why the economy fired up under POTUS Trump’s deregulation and tax cuts.

Depending on what Democrats actually do, the economy could stall in the days ahead. If so it’s sad, avoidable, but the pivoting POTUS Trump knows how to highlight that too.

The deal making president doesn’t mind going directly to the people and making his case. If Democrats use control of the House in a way that harms U.S. safety or economics security, he can make that case and produce a full victory in 2020. The president thinks for the long run.

Democrats and progressives think long term too. Our president has shown the patience and resolve necessary to battle the left and beat them at their own game.

The Heritage Foundation said in 2014 that the cost of Democratic President Lyndon Banes Johnson’s arguably misnamed ‘Great Society’ programs has been about 22 trillion dollars. That’s roughly equal to the formal federal debt.

Different sources, the same facts. The socialist promises are proven not to work. Why keep doing what has been proven to fail for over 50 years?

The way to end that morass is through economic growth. Only more income for more people, reducing welfare dependence, and growth in federal revenues will fix the fiscal and economic structural challenges that loom in America.  We can’t afford to become Venezuela. No one will bail the USA out if we fail.

Follow the Money

People like Warren Buffett and George Soros have used their money to obliquely fund groups that participated in the recent post-election protests.

Those progressive billionaires have clearly signaled that peace and bipartisanship are not their goal. It never was. Our industry’s Buffett funded Democrats for years, including candidates like Alinskyites Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

There are only a few ways that conservatives – a phrase environmentalists ought to embrace – and those who believe in Constitutionally limited government can defeat the patient, billionaire funded, media and tech giant dominated left.

  • Conservatives must prove to the masses that decades of Democratic policies have failed. The evidence is there in states likes California, and cities like San Francisco, LA, Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago or any city or state that has long run under Democratic Rule. Affordable housing, and a host of other social and economic needs, are everywhere. If their party’s principles work, just ask for proof. Where?
  • Like POTUS Trump, we must be willing to fight deceptive lies or spin with the truth and facts.
  • Those facts must be conveyed in a way that highlight the con-job of Democrats, vs. the proven reality of constitutional conservatism.
  • As a political independent, I recognize that the GOP is more right than wrong. But areas that the POTUS Trump must reach Republicans that have kept me from being one are immigration, trade and a need to avoid foreign wars whenever possible.
  • The GOP losses in the House were avoidable. The president’s press conference revelations of candidates who rejected his “embrace” – and lost – speaks to part of the path.
  • But the other part of his potentially winning coalition are those 22 million Americans who live in manufactured homes. Many already support the President, as a 2016 New York Times poll, and our own unscientific survey, revealed. The left has used MHAction and other resident activist groups to organize a growing number of manufactured home community residents. The GOP and conservative business leaders must learn to engage them successfully. Why?
  • Because they are buying leftist lies being sold by MHAction and others about rent control. It’s all a piece of the progressive cloth.
  • Had the GOP flipped more of those manufactured home owners, they could have won several more Senate seats, in 2018. What the president called his embrace, plus more manufactured home owners, would have held the House.

The Apartment List did research we will close on, but in a unique fashion. They made the case before the election that renters are more likely to vote Democratic. That also means that home owners are more likely to vote Republican.

The National Association of Realtors ™ (NAR) research by Scholastica ‘Gay’ Cororaton, Certified Business Economist (CBE), made the case that manufactured homes can and have appreciated in value. She also said that most renters could be manufactured home owners, based upon their respective incomes and costs. Cororaton also debunked several other fallacies about manufactured homes with her research, in which she kindly cited this writer in her first footnote.

The HUD Connection

In that same footnotes, the NAR economist also cited Mark Weiss, JD, the President and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR). Weiss was cited by the Washington Post in their report about the battle over the HUD Code manufactured housing program.  WaPo essentially credited MHARR for having one Pam Danner, JD, removed from her role as administrator over the Office of Manufactured Housing Programs (OMHP).

Danner was widely seen in the industry as harmful to the manufactured housing, both by overreaching her statutory mandates, but also by failing to enforce enhanced preemption that federal law gives to manufactured homes.

By contrast, the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), also cited by WaPo’s Juliet Eilperin, but not for trying to have Danner removed. In point of fact, sources tell MHProNews that it was one or more MHI insiders, backed by Clayton Homes, that pressed for Danner over attorney Victor A. DeRose, who was the official consensus candidate for the post Danner ended up getting.

In Senate testimony in the spring of 2018, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, M.D., said that the evolution from the mobile homes of the past to the manufactured homes of today was amazing.” Carson is known for that calm demeanor, but anyone who views that CSPAN video might think he was emoting.  Secretary Carson also blasted the way the regulations over manufactured homes had been handled as “ridiculous” in that same testimony. That might be construed as a quiet slap at the unnamed Danner.

But in fairness to Danner, the program has never been allowed to live up to its potential. Imagine, the most affordable housing in the nation – decades of proven safety, energy, durability, and appeal – and yet it has been arguably stifled.  Why?

The solution to the affordable housing crisis is the key to unlocking some $2 trillion dollars in more economic activity every year. That would means millions of new jobs.  Higher wages.  More home ownership.  Greater net worth for those leaving rentals. And hint-hint to the GOP and conservatives who do the educating needed, fewer renters and more Republican voters.

My circle of friends, family and associates includes numerous Democrats, Libertarians and others from across the spectrum.  Many of them are people with a great sense of conscience and true caring for others.  But that doesn’t mean that they have not been deceived.  This writer candidly admits to being misled by MHI’s true pattern of activity, which has broadened the Clayton Homes and their affiliated Berkshire Hathaway lenders and suppliers “moats.”  It was MHI themselves that finally caused me to wake up, and begin to examine what a few others had said (and I’d somehow missed) for years was going on.

Smoking Gun 3 – Warren Buffett, Kevin Clayton, Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage Corp Tim Williams – Manufactured Home Lending, Sales Grab?

Habits can do that to a person.  So, my patience must be as generous as to others as others who enlighted me have been to me.  It isn’t always easy to see that someone could be betrayed for years, but it happens.

We see the world, not as it is, but as we are──or, as we are conditioned to see it,” said Covey.

7 of the top 10 billionaires in America are pro-Democratic.  It is there absolute right to be so.  Within the boundaries of law and morality, they can do with those money as they please.

The Democrats are not the same party that they used to be. Neither are the Republicans. Democrats have tilted socialist, and many say so openly.

But what an examination of the evidence reveals is this.

  • Much of the mainstream media,
  • Many in Hollywood,
  • Many in Silicon Valley,
  • Well beyond the 7 of the top 10 billionaires,

are pro-Democratic. They teach it in schools run by Democratic unions, which often used pro-progressive agenda approved textbooks. This isn’t conspiracy, this is demonstrable fact.  To disguise the reality, we’ve been told by left-leaning media for years about the horrible Koch Brothers, who are only 2 of the top 10 billionaires, and not the top 2.

The deck is stacked. The system is rigged.

Manufactured homes isn’t a one size fits all solution to every problem.  But just as protecting the first and second amendment – along with the others – is routinely useful and good, so too is protecting the right of the people to buy and own the kind of home they want to on their own land, or land they acquire.  It is amazing how the left can hypocritically push “choice” when it comes to unborn human life, but be anti-choice when it comes to practical ways to advance affordable manufactured homes.

What is wrong is that we do not ask what is right.” observed G.K. Chesterton.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” said Edmund Burke.

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts,” said Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Trulia research in 2017 revealed that affordable homes by neighboring conventional housing doesn’t impact value.

HUD Commissioned research in 2011 revealed that manufactured homes sited next to conventional housing both appreciated, side by side.

There are mountains of evidence from Harvard, the Ford Foundation, the Fannie Mae Foundation, NAR, HUD, and others that support the value of modern manufactured homes.  But the keys are these. The laws to help make those affordable homes available for infill on homesites across the nation is the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000.  It gives enhanced preemption.  Locals can’t zone HUD Code manufactured homes out, yet have been allowed to do so for decades.

Local zoning officials when they do, routinely do so based upon misinformation.  That’s why education, education, education is a key for the next two years.

The Trump Administration has the power to enforce the law. Will they have the political will and wisdom to do so?  The financing is also there, made possible by the Duty to Serve Manufactured Housing mandated by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act (HERA) of 2008.  FHA, VA, and the USDA also have federally backed loan programs that if properly used could turn millions of renters into home owners.

With 8.3 million housing units needed just to catch up, per NAR’s Chief Economist Lawrence Yun, the logic of the matter is powerful.  Many of those who once owned conventional housing now own a manufactured home.  Those former conventional housing owners routinely sing the praises of their new federally regulated homes, that the U.S. Census Bureau says costs half as much as conventional housing.

It’s time to let the law work.

It’s time to let common sense and the evidence be put to work, to educate others as to why some are allowed to suffer, while purportedly manipulative billionaires maneuver media, money, and authorities in ways that the common person can’t.

Clayton’s Denial, But Mainstream News Reports Ongoing Federal Investigation of Manufactured Housing Industry Giant

October 23rd, 2018 Comments off

MHProNews was alone in Manufactured Housing independent professional’s trade media in reporting last year that four Democratic leaders – including Maxine Waters and current DNC Vice-Chairman Keith Ellison – had asked for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate discrimination charges against minorities.

Then in May 2018, the Seattle Times further reported that federal investigations were ongoing.  MHProNews had independent confirmation of other federal investigations of Clayton Homes and their affiliates.

More recently, Tennessee-based news media spotlighted the ongoing charges, which Clayton Homes formally denied.

In their statement to WATE 6 On Your Side, Clayton said in a written statement:

Over its 60 year history, Clayton Homes has built a culture of compliance and does not tolerate discrimination of any kind in its interactions with customers. We value working with federal and state agencies to improve processes and ensure all regulatory requirements are met and our customers are protected and treated fairly. Last year, our lenders were the subject of more than 40 routine agency examinations resulting in no fines.”

That last part may be true. But it logically begs the question, what about the cases that sparked the investigations against Clayton Homes and their affiliated lenders to begin with? Isn’t Clayton’s answer at least a partial dodge?

Warren’s and Charlie’s Statements on Clayton

Warren Buffett is the well-known Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, which owns Clayton and their manufactured housing lending units. Buffet has defended Clayton’s lending practices, saying loan rates have more to do with credit scores, income, job history, and whether the customer owns land, not on their race.

Does that mean that every single transaction gets handled perfectly? No,” Buffett said in an interview with CNBC in 2016.  Nor did Buffett address internal documents from Clayton referenced by The Seattle Times report that pressured Clayton managers into pushing borrowers into higher cost loans than they may have otherwise qualified for, see the graphic below.

As MHProNews has also previously reported, CNN in an interview with Vice Chairman Charlie Munger reported Munger making a similar admission. Munger said that someone, somewhere had no doubt likely done something wrong.

Put differently, while denying the notion, aren’t both Buffett and Munger admitting that certain practices were wrong?  Don’t Buffett and Munger thus belie Clayton’s denial?

A former Clayton sales employee has described certain “tactics” that he felt were inappropriate, high pressure, and deceptive. That should be part of a planned upcoming ‘Inside Clayton’ exclusive report on MHProNews.

Related to these reports is a new allegation that has surfaced from within the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) staff and members, which will also be explored in a planned upcoming report.

Suffice it to say for now, that Jim Clayton’s support of a high-profile Democrat – in opposition to a historic supporter of MHI requested issues in Washington, D.C. – has troubled some in manufactured housing industry circles.

Jim is the founder of Clayton Homes and Clayton Bank. Where is that loyalty that the Clayton organization speaks about, with respect to Representative Marsha Blackburn (TN-R)? Why are they supporting a man when they could a loyal woman, in the #MeToo era?  See that under related reports, further below the byline.

Why is Clayton joining Buffett, George Soros, and other deep pocket Democratic billionaires in opposing the Trump Administration agenda of more jobs, higher incomes, lower taxes, and fewer job-and-business killing regulations?

ICYMI or need a refresher, see the related reports, further below.

Then ask yourself too, why is no one else in manufactured housing trade media covering these controversial topics, that arguably impact the public image of the industry, save MHProNews? Then look at who is sponsoring those others, and ask yourself if Clayton and MHI ad money is buying the silence of certain MH bloggers, SECO, and MH trade publishers?

Note that Clayton and MHI were previously given an opportunity to respond to these issues, and each declined comment. If they do so later, we can update readers. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, analysis, and commentary.)

Expose! Why Has Warren Buffett/BH Funded Anti-MHC Activists, MHAction? Why Fund Attacks on ELS, Frank Rolfe, Blackstone Group?

October 20th, 2018 Comments off

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

On the surface, it sounds preposterous.

Or even bizarre.

Why would billionaire Warren Buffett, his family, and related foundations make ‘charitable’ contributions of Berkshire Hathaway stocks, cash, and/or grants to a left-wing activist-organizations that in turn paid MHAction, which disrupted HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s address to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI)?

That’s where the news tip, facts, and evidence point to – in what could develop into the biggest manufactured housing exposé since Smoking Gun 3.

It was a resident group member that tipped the Daily Business News on MHProNews to the statements by the president of the Golden State Manufactured-Home Owner League (GSMOL) that MHAction – Manufactured Housing Action – was getting funding from the Tides Foundation.

Among the donors to the leftist Tides?

The NoVo Foundation, with Warren’s son Peter and his wife as organization’s Co-Presidents. In the year shown, Buffett backed NoVo Foundation gave millions of dollars toward the Tides.  See that new report on MHLivingNews, at the link below.

Manufactured Home Resident Group President Cautions Against MHAction, Surprising Background Reveal to Manufactured Housing Action

The Tides in turn gave to MHAction, stated the GSMOL President Michelle Smith.

Smith blasted MHAction for trying to wrongfully take credit for work that they – GSMOL – had in fact done.

What Smith didn’t say was the “dark money” trail from Buffett – who’s Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate owns Clayton Homes, 21st and Vanderbilt, among several other firms connected to manufactured housing – has purportedly funded MHAction.

But Tides and groups funded by Buffett and billionaire George Soros haven’t funded through intermediaries  MHAction alone.  There are other radical activist groups that have been funded too.

We didn’t want the details to leak before publishing this, but soon plan to ask how

  1. Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS),
  2. “Frank & Dave,” RVHorizons, and Mobile Home University (MHU),
  3. or the Blackstone Group

feel about having Berkshire money flowing into anti-business protests that have been aimed at them?

MHAction, as MHProNews has previously reported, protested each of those groups. See the video above for one example, with more in the related reports, further below the by line.

Further, the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) has elevated Sen. Elizabeth Warren (MA-D).  Warren, was a keynote for an MHAction and other radical activist groups address.

‘Pay More Attention to what People Do…’ and ‘Follow the Money.’

You decide if Marty Lavin’s dictum applies.

FollowThe MoneyPayMoreAttentionToWhatPeopleDothanwhatTheySaySpySea72MartyLavinYachtManufacturedHousingINdustryProMHProNews

Ask yourself. Do these Marty Lavin dictums apply in these cases?  Some of the same people who make left-wing protests against ‘capitalists’ are funded by left-wing billionaires.  Can you spell ‘head fake?’  Can you spell ‘con game?’

Where’s the Logic?

To report a news tip, click the image above or send an email to – To help us spot your message in our volume of email, please put the words NEWS TIP in the subject line.

MHAction – through the Tides Foundations, and via other mechanisms – are connected

  • to Black Lives Matter,
  • New York Communities for Change (NYCC),
AntiFa (so-called Antifascists, who ironically use the brownshirt and violent tactics that fascists used),
  • and other radical – sometimes violent and destructive  – groups.  It should be noted that NYCC and others spun off from ACORN, which was disbanded after allegations of voter fraud, and other illegalities surfaced.

The above facts appears to confirm the oblique links between Buffett’s billions and those of left-wing activist billionaire, George Soros.

GSMOL, Other Resident Groups Should Be Disturbed

It’s no secret that the Western Manufactured Housing Communities Association (WHA) and GSMOL are often at loggerheads with each other.

But are each group missing something in this revelation?

How is it that Democrats are getting backers like:

  • billionaires Buffett and Soros,
  • state resident groups are also often backing Democratic candidates?
  • In California, sources say that the WMA backs Democrats too.
  • Who is fooling whom?

When you look at the pieces of the puzzle, it makes you think back to corruption of Tammany Hall,” said L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach, publisher of MHProNews, manufactured home industry consultant, service provider, and expert.

How is it that members of the Delaware Manufactured Home Owners Association (DMHOA) failed to realize the import of their own statements? Didn’t they realize that Democrats have the lion share of the PAC money in the U.S., and apparently in their state?

The comment above was said with respect to another recent topic, but relates to this issue too.

Why are there so many cases of both residents and industry insiders backing the same party’s candidates?

MH Communities, Owners, MH Independents Alert – NMHOA and MHAction Next Steps? – Part 1

Paying to Stir Up Trouble…

Manufactured housing is a microcosm of what is taking place in other parts of the national scene.  There are paid agitators in Washington, D.C. and other places. There are organizations that have formed with money from billionaires and others that are organizing the protests that disrupted

More on this in the days ahead. But suffice it to say for today that the billionaires are paying to stir up trouble for the members of the industry on several levels.

Part of the image issue of our industry is fueled by the protests of MHAction and others.  That impacts not only those who are being protested, but arguably, the industry at large.

And the party that Buffett and Soros backs are the Democrats.  The Democrats are the ‘beneficiaries’ of AntiFa and related groups, that operate similarly to how MHAction are being used in MHVille. In fact, as a prior report revealed, MHAction attends other leftist groups protests, and vice versa.

Where is MHI on this?  Oh, yes, pardon me.  They are being funded by Berkshire Hathaway too.

On MHProNews, we follow the leads, evidence, tips, and money.

Frank Rolfe. Manufactured Homes and Communities. Industry Politics. It’s Complicated.

October 11th, 2018 Comments off

It’s complicated.

There is little doubt that Frank Rolfe is a believer in affordable housing, manufactured homes, and what he routinely – albeit controversially – refers to as “mobile home parks1 or “trailer parks.”2

Rolfe’s known for saying controversial things others don’t want in print.

Oh my God I’m going to be killed,” Rolfe told Mark Ferguson for an investor podcast, adding “because my only experience with mobile home parks was with what I saw on TV like the movie Pink Flamingos and Griffin of course, by the things in the past, it looked kind of scary. So I thought, “Oh man I’ve got to go get a concealed handgun license.”

MobileHomeParkOwnersGuideSuccessfulBattlefieldTacticsRecaptureProfitabilityInvestorsGuideFrankRolfeMHProNewsIf that makes some industry purists cringe, he went onto say the following in that podcast.

So I went down and I did that, I bought myself a nice pistol and loaded it up and put it in my pocket and showed up at the park and I soon learned that most of my stereotypes were completely wrong at the park. One thing that it was not and that was scary, I think I don’t know why I was so obsessed with the idea that I had my personal safety an issue, but that was definitely not the case.

So pretty soon after I got in there, I learned most all of the ideas I had of the industry were stupid. I started morphing into where I am today. So I no longer carry a gun. I no longer are terrified to go into a park. Basically, a mobile home park is just like any old subdivision. It’s just the homes are much smaller and the people typically are lower income earning but to me, it’s a much more safe environment than for example an apartment complex.”

Rolfe on Why “Parks” Are Rising Value?

Limited numbers, with almost no more being added is the answer.  Here’s how Rolfe explained it to Ferguson.

So by far the majority of the parks we own were built in the 60’s and there were still a lot built in the 70’s and pretty much ended by the 80’s and by the 80’s what happened is that most cities passed laws that you could no longer build mobile home parks in their city and in fact today, you pretty much cannot build a mobile home park in any city in the United States. There are only about 10 parks in the entire United States built per year. So the window pretty much closed in the 80’s.”

Rolfe on “Mobile Home” Durability

It’s a common misconception that these homes are — that they wear out, that they have a shelf life like a car. The industry kind of did that to itself because it used to be like a car. In fact, many mobile home sellers, dealers used to be car dealers. So they would tell people, “Oh you have to trade that in after so many years.” That’s bunk. What is a mobile home? A mobile home is just like your house; it’s two by four’s, it’s metal, it’s resins, it’s plastic and then it’s sheathed in metal, it’s not going to die. There are no moving parts in it, it’s not like an engine on a car. So they really never wear out.”

Rolfe has told MHProNews that he is wont at times to exaggerate while making a point. So, he’s not saying in the above that there’s no maintenance. He knows that roofs need care or replacement, along with other components like AC, heat, or appliances.

Rolfe On What Can’t Be Fixed

Real estate is about location. Lots of things, you can’t fix, you can’t change location. You can’t go out and take your property in the bad location and make it a winner because of the bad location. It’s very critical, in real estate you buy it right on the front end because you can’t fix it, you just can’t. No matter how good a manager you are, if the property has — if the lots are too small, if the water sewer is failing, location’s terrible, you can’t make it any better,” he told Ferguson.

Frank Rolfe ‘teaching’ on often controversial industry issues. Still from one of two videos posted on this page from that address by Rolfe to dozens of industry professionals.

Rolfe About Teaching

Then when I got out of Stanford I kept on teaching public speaking at SMU in Dallas for 30 years approximately. So Dave did the same thing on accounting out there in Colorado so we’ve always loved teaching. Teaching is fun, if you do something, it’s always fun talking about it and showing people how you do it but that’s what our education stuff is about, it’s basically, it’s about honesty and factual — it’s just a different deal and I think people respond well to it because they can tell that it’s no BS and that we really enjoy doing it.”

Rolfe on Action and Thought

There’s the old saying, “Think like a man of action and act like a man of thought.” Thinking and learning and not taking action that never works. But equally as dangerous as taking action without knowing what you’re doing.”

Rolfe, like Warren Buffett is a reader, as well as a doer.

If you’re going to do something, learn — learn, learn. Read the instruction manual, that’s how you save yourself from bad endings. Benjamin Franklin who never owned a mobile home park, but back in the 1700’s wrote that due diligence is the mother of good luck.”

Rolfe on Cities and “Trailer Parks”

Rolfe argues that it is not stigma alone that keeps cities and towns from allowing more of them. “A lot of people think, “Oh well, it’s because cities hate trailer parks and trailer park people.” I mean sure, they are not excited about it, right? Any city would rather have a big mansion neighborhood than a trailer park.” He went on to say that the taxes are higher with more expensive housing than with older mobile homes or manufactured homes.

Those are not meant by Rolfe to all be value judgements.  Rather, they are matter-of-fact (to him) observations. Again, he has been known to speak his mind in often colorful ways, no doubt in part to entertain and attract an audience.  As with anyone, quoting Rolfe isn’t meant to imply that every thing he says or does is being endorsed.  MHProNews takes a ‘wheat and chaff’ approach, and is happy to source information from across a spectrum of people, opinions, and views.  One key is being accurate in fair in citing sources and sharing quotes.

Is the quote accurate and being used in an accurate application or context?  Then, have at it.

By the way, here’s Rolfe explaining terminology, in his own words.

Footnote 1: Some land-lease communities truly are ‘mobile home parks,’ in the sense that they were built during the mobile home era (pre-June 15, 1976), and have mostly mobile homes in them.

Footnote 2: Role would likely admit if pressed that trailers and mobile homes are different. There are RV ‘trailer parks,’ that’s their given name. But manufactured homes are not trailers, and they are not mobile homes. Manufactured homes and manufactured housing are legal phrases, applied to housing built to preemptive federal standards.

The terminology matters because
the terminology determines the
construction standards a home was
built to,” Steve Duke, LMHA.

Rolfe on Some Big Manufactured Home Industry Controversies

When it comes to Frank Rolfe’s willingness to weigh in on controversial topics, what once was, is now noticeably toned down.

1)         Rolfe – who today, with his associates is the number 5 manufactured home community operation in the U.S. – has previously blasted MHI for controversial positions.

2)         One example is Rolfe leveling Nathan Smith, MHI’s former Chairman, for what Rolfe said is the terrible publicity Smith has brought to the industry. See more on Smith, MHI and other related references which are linked at the end of this report.

3)         Rolfe blasted MHI’s mindless pursuit of the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act, which he correctly said ‘had no chance’ of passage during the Obama Administration.

4)         Rolfe repeatedly blasted MHI for failure to engage the media, on positive or negative news topics that impacted the industry.

On bullet #4 above, here is Rolfe in his own words.

MHI is currently spotlighting 5 operations in their videos, which in some ways is arguably a disadvantage to other MHI members. It is also worth noting that those 5 videos are not getting many views.

So, there were plenty of people in MHVille that followed such comments, here on MHProNews, or on other venues when Rolfe shared such talking points.

It is obvious that Rolfe his own controversial stances. Let’s turn to some more…

Rolfe On Politics

Click here or on the graphic above to learn more, which is not connected to this report.

One of the controversies that’s gone underreported in manufactured housing trades – until now – is his pre-2016 election day stance on Hillary Clinton.  Clinton was the Warren Buffet led Berkshire Hathaway pick for president in 2016.

Rolfe thought Hillary would win.  On that topic, MHProNews was correct in projecting and informing the industry of the path for the victory of Donald J. Trump in 2016.  While our styles are different, we too believe in education and information – all with a purpose.  That purpose is going more business, and serving more home owners well.

Back to Rolfe and 2016.

With former President Bill Clinton along with his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, are hitting the speaking tour in the coming weeks.  Mainstream media outlets are doing past and present ‘compare and contrasts’ reports.  So, why not do so here on the Daily Business News on MHProNews too? Why not do it through the lens of Rolfe’s comments and related?

Frank Rolfe on Hillary Clinton

In the days just before the 2016 election day vote, and here’s what Rolfe said on NuWire Investor.

The U.S. Presidential Election is in only about a week. But the stats are showing that Hillary will probably win at this point – it would take a miracle to change the outcome. So if Hillary is the next President, what does that mean for real estate investors across the nation?

He made an interesting statement on interest rates under President Obama, which technically is controlled by the Federal Reserve, which is supposed to be independent of the White House. Let’s set that aside, and look at other extended pull-quotes by Rolfe to NuWire.

Keeping banks happy

One of the key issues that came up during the election was the apparent tight relationship between Hillary and big banks. They paid her millions of dollars in “speaking fees”, and the contents of her speeches (while only released by Wikileaks) would suggest that she intends to keep things status quo regarding banking policy. Since real estate is typically using leverage of 80%, a strong banking industry is imperative to keeping real estate prices healthy.

Keeping the economy weak

Following the U.S. Great Recession of 2008, we have entered into an era of extremely weak economic growth and employment. It would take a bold plan to exit this rut, and Clinton is unlikely to foster that. Her focus on higher taxes and more subsidies would suggest that the U.S. will remain just as it is for four more years. And that’s good for real estate, as this stable market allows investors to make safe decisions and obtain attractive loans.

Stabilizing immigration

Many sectors of real estate – particularly multi-family and mobile home parks – have a strong focus on Hispanic customers in many states, and removing the threat of immigration enforcement will make many owners breathe a sigh of relief. This issue has already pretty much gone away, but Clinton will probably finalize it during her administration.

Causing problems with capital gains tax

This is one huge downside to the Clinton presidency: anticipated higher capital gains taxes. This means that you might spend more or your profits in taxes to the IRS in the years ahead. Clearly, this is not a plus. However, it will still be difficult to get such legislation passed through Congress, so the key issue is whether or not the Democrats take control of Congress in this election. Our bet is that the issue will be muted and, if it does go forward, the effect will be gradual rather than overnight.”

No mere mortal one gets it right 100 percent of the time.  Rolfe’s analysis has a mix of correct and incorrect observations. You can read the entire Rolfe statement as a download at this link above.  Rolfe’s full commentary is found at the download, linked here.

Why Does This Rolfe Topic Matter to MHVille Now?

It’s complicated, but simple.

Follow the Money.

And follow how politics has evolved into a purported shell game for mega billionaires like Warren Buffett.

Because the mega rich, along with others, are arguably willing to manipulate markets – or allow inaction to harm the interests of tens of millions – while a few benefit at their expense.

Sources to MHProNews:

  • with Berkshire ties,
  • evidence of marketing and other benefits to Rolfe and his colleagues, from Berkshire’s manufactured housing brands
  • along with the evidence of Rolfe going silent about public criticism of MHI,
  • or holding a lower profile on other issues that Berkshire cares about –

all suggests an effort at influencing the narrative in the industry.

It isn’t limited to Rolfe.

That narrative to MHVille matters deeply to Berkshire brands like:

  • 21st Mortgage,
  • Clayton Homes,
  • Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance – which has begun lending on communities
  • suppliers like Shaw Carpeting,

–       and others who broker communities or provide other products and services. Politics, media, nonprofits – these are demonstrable tools used by Berkshire Hathaway, as Kevin Clayton has explained in a video linked from related reports, further below.

Clinton vs Trump, Round 2 – Buffett, Soros, Rolfe and MHAction

Rolfe has previously cited concerns over left-wing billionaire George Soros’ influencing mainstream media.

It’s arguably another apt point Rolfe’s made.

He made that point very specifically with respect to Soros, citing a source that claims that the Center for Public Integrity – which played a role in the ongoing Seattle Times controversies surrounding Clayton Homes and Berkshire lending in the manufactured housing industry.

What Rolfe doesn’t say is that billionaires like Soros and Buffett can take some negative media, help fund the creation of some of that media themselves, and can still benefit. They can benefit to the tune of billions in revenue annually.

Negative media tends to impact others in manufactured housing, not just the target of a report.  That is the contention of others in the manufactured housing industry, as messages via social media, email, text or by phone to MHProNews has contended.

There are a variety of bullets that purportedly impact manufactured housing in ways that keeps our industry from recovering to its more higher production ‘glory days.’

There are reasons to believe that those controversies impacting manufactured housing will continue.  At least that is the logic – which Rolfe believes in – of the matter, until the motivation to stop the kinds of behavior that causes controversy remain largely unabated.

Rolfe and his colleagues were invited to participate in this article, and declined.  They’ve also been invited to participate in another industry related article which is planned in the days ahead. Stay tuned for that upcoming episode of “News through the lens of manufactured homes, and factory-built housing.” ©  Where  “We Provide, You Decide” © who you will vote for in the rapidly approaching 2018 midterms.  Will you vote for those who rig the system, or for those who are trying to level the playing field for small to mid-sized operations of all kinds?  (News, analysis, and commentary.)

The headline isn’t an all-encompassing list of those bulleted items, individuals, or groups that act as opposition or de facto “enemies” which artificially stifle the advancement of manufactured homes, homeowners, and professionals. But they do capture the flavor of important realities confronting the most proven affordable permeant homes built in the U.S. today. Specifically, HUD Code manufactured homes.

Linked reports that document various points herein can be read later for greater depth of understanding on that aspect of this subject.

Fresh Facts, Figures, Future of Affordable Housing -Comparisons- Conventional Site-Built v Mobile/Manufactured Home Industry Data

The Urban Institute, Bloomberg, and the National Association of Realtors have all had stories and reports this year that on the surface are positive and useful in various ways for advancing the truth about manufactured housing.

Bloomberg “New Home for $90,000? Manufactured Housing Is Making a Comeback” Reveals MH Media Challenge

The Urban Institute phrasing of their data and reports particularly merits scrutiny, which their January 2018 study is covered in the related report and the links from it, which are found in the analysis linked below.

Urban Institute Ask for Correction in Analysis of their Manufactured Housing Research, “Follow the Facts,” “Follow the Money”

What may appear at first blush to be good news for the industry begs the question that the Urban Institute asked in January 2018. Given the affordable housing crisis, and the fact that manufactured homes are well positioned to address the need, why are so few HUD Code manufactured housing units being built?

Why is manufactured housing under-performing from its historic norms, as this chart from Skyline-Champion reflects?

Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors ® (NAR), says that only by homebuilders getting busy can solve the need for an estimated 8.3 million housing unit shortfall.  Tech gurus say that only factory-based homebuilding will close that gap.  So why aren’t the sales of HUD Code manufactured homes (MH) soaring?

Collage by MHProNews.

Why are RVs – which trailed MH shipments 20 years ago – now outselling MH by some 5 to 1?

Among the headwinds are individuals, and organizations that by accident or design are behaving in ways contrary to the interests of home owners, home seekers, and most manufactured housing professionals.  That is most notably true for MHVille “independents.” As an example,  tent control is an issue that’s widely misunderstood, and thus merits careful examination to reveal how it harms home owners, affordable housing seekers, and many businesses too.

Above and below are some recent headlines, in screen captures from Google and alternative search engine, DuckDuckGo.

These are examples of what Marty Lavin, JD, a Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) award winning professional, has called “the [manufactured housing] industry’s other image campaign.”

There are routinely far more negative stories that fill the news and ether than positive ones.  As MHProNews has uniquely documented for some years, there are positive reports about modern manufactured housing that date back for over 2 decades.

Hungary’s [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán has turned on George Soros.” = The Guardian. “Israel defends Hungary’s ‘antisemitic’ portrayal of George Soros…” = The Independent. Soros has backed groups like MoveOn, ACORN, and New York Communities for Change, which in turn has aligned with MHAction.

20 years ago, manufactured housing sales were soaring.  Today, they are snoring. While it is true that lending was “loose” 20 years ago, that alone doesn’t explain the disparity. Because loan quality doesn’t change the reality that there were demonstrably more customers actively seeking manufactured homes.

Demand is a function of news, marketing, education and desire.  This has been proven with client work by MHProNews’ related consulting/business development services operations.  In varied local markets, we’ve demonstrated that sales can soar, given proper adjustments in training, media engagement, and other proprietary methods. When sales can profitably grow by hundreds of percent year-over-year or in a 24 month time-frame, those cases are clear indicators that it can be done by others too.

Logic and geniuses like Albert Einstein alike tell those willing to listen that doing more of the same, will only create a similar result.

It takes effort to change, or as John Bostick – President of Sunshine Homes – keenly observed, “Easy doesn’t pay well.” Change requires effort, and effort – energy is the antidote to entropy, the status quo, and more of the same.

People like George Soros could, in theory, be ‘won over.’ But Soros – and billionaires like Tom Steyer, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffett – are demonstrably politically-aligned fellow travelers. They each supported in various ways former President Barack Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton backed agendas. They’ve all grown vastly in wealth, while supporting candidates and causes that appear to be contrary to their interests. But when examined closely, big government has helped – not harmed – the wealth of billionaires.

The agendas of those named above – which are out in the open for all to see – have been demonstrably harmful economically to the interests of the vast majority of Americans, including manufactured home owners, and professionals. Left to right, George Soros, Tom Steyer and Caron Swain. Credits are as shown.

Hang onto your wallets. Industry professional and investors need to ask themselves, do they want a return to heavier regulations by HUD, or elsewhere?  There are serious issues on the line.  Spin, disinformation, conveniently overlooked history, and blatant lies are among the tools that could help-or-harm manufactured housing, workers, and professionals involved in business and investing.

Billionaire donors George Soros and Tom Steyer are directing $650,000 to [Andrew] Gillum’s political committee, Forward Florida,” reported Tampa Bay, just days before the election which resulted in an upset win in the Democratic side of the primary.

Hedge fund billionaire Tom Steyer,” said left-of-center Politico, put millions into the 2016 campaign, usually in favor of Democratic candidates. Steyer and Soros hold similar positions, as their support for “Democratic Socialist” Gillum underscores.  Steyer and Soros made their money as capitalists, so why are they keeping their wealth, and only using part of it to back socialists?  Isn’t that an arguably hypocritical disconnect?  Or does their politics point to something else?

Gillum, as the Daily Business News on MHProNews reported, won an upset victory in the Democratic primary, and will be facing off in Florida – the #3 manufactured housing state in recent years – for governor of the Sunshine State.  In the linked report with photo below, Congressman Ron DeSantis is on the left, and Mayor Andrew Gillum is on the right.

Epic Battle for MHVille Mainstay Looms, With “Not the Most Popular Guy” and His Rival

Soros is pro-open borders.  He’s long been a strong supporter of leftist causes and politicians, as a prior Daily Business News report reflected.

Within hours of their victories, Gillum went to the ‘race card’ accusing Congressman Ron DeSantis of using the term “monkey this up” as more of a “bull horn,” more than the “dog whistle” accusation made for alleged racism.

Really?  Was it racist when Barack Obama used the phrase?

Democrats have been known to MONKEY around with elections,” said Barack Obama Sep 4, 2008, per Me. C-SPAN quoted the former President Obama on Oct 21, 2016 saying, “so, I want to be honest, its not as if its just Republicans who monkey around with elections…”  The term “monkey around” is a neutral expression, which blacks – including the former POTUS Obama, and all other racial groups have used in the U.S. for decades.

But this faux issue is a reminder of what happens during campaign season. It’s common for many, not all, Democratic candidates to ‘play the race card.’ That’s not to excuse GOP canards, such as their traditional view on trade. But this latest Democratic allegation begs a look at some background, that sets the question of Democrats vs. the GOP and related racial issues into an accurate, historic context.

This video by professor Carol Swain at Vanderbilt University will be stunning to many, and will be unsurprising but useful to others. It’s already been viewed some 4.6 million times. Viewer ‘thumbs up’ on this date outscored thumbs down by about 10 to 1. That suggests it’s worth viewing.

For those who aren’t familiar with PragerU, conservative Jewish businessman Dennis Prager helped establish that wildly popular platform. PragerU has had a broader range of informed presenters like Steve Forbes, Sharyl Attkisson, Alan Dershowitz, Guy Benson, Ben Shapiro, David Clarke, Tammy Bruce, Dinesh D’Souza, Walter Williams, and Candace Owens among others.  Prager works with good presenters with often impressive credentials, as the screen capture from the PragerU presenter’s page reflects.

The historical facts presented by Professor Swain are accurate. They are also politically inconvenient.

As a disclaimer, keep in mind, MHProNews’ principals are not members of either major party. We are true political independents. Our friends and supporters include people of all political, ethnic, religious, and other groups. That said, we are editorially strong believers that the truth well told sets people free.

The nation watches the continued drift towards socialism among Democrats.  It’s exhibited by primary victories like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York, and Mayor Andrew Gilliam in FL. These are topics that have and will impact businesses. Moderate Democrats, like former Clinton advisor Doug Schoen, are begging their fellow party loyalists to reject that push to the socialist left.

Facts are facts. Facts and the truth may be inconvenient. But with an economy rapidly rising under the leadership of a former Democrat turned Republican – President Donald J. Trump – this is a good time to grasp what’s gone wrong in the past.  This is the time to make adjustments, and turn towards a brigher future founded on free enterprise. There is progress being made to an economy that increasingly works for all Americans.

Doug Schoen, Clinton Adviser, warns – “Democrats must advance an agenda…to create a society of opportunity for all – not guaranteed outcomes achieved through wealth redistribution.”

The Daily Business News and other features here on MHProNews has reported on related topics previously. Some examples are linked herein, or in the related reports, further below.

If you or a friend are members of either of the two political parties discussed in this video, the questions should be simple. Is the information accurate? What relevance does it have to the upcoming voting in November?  Do we want to let America buy into the lies that promoted the crisis in Venezuela?  Start sharing these ideas now.

Follow the Money – 100s of Immigration Protests, MoveOn, George Soros, The Border, Mexico’s AMLO, and Manufactured Housing

July 2nd, 2018 Comments off

The signs the protesters are carrying speak volumes, and ought to be troubling to professionals, investors and all other thinkers too.

The economy is moving again. Hundreds of billions in capital have already poured back into the U.S. during the first quarter of 2018. But it could all be turned upside down, depending on the outcomes of the 2018 midterms. And big, “dark money” is backing efforts that led to hundreds of weekend protests that could stymie the economic recovery, and upend the progress being made for manufactured housing and investors.

The political left, centrists, and the supporters of President Donald J. Trump are making the border and immigration key issues in the approaching 2018 midterms.

Manufactured housing industry professionals know that illegal immigrants are among those who buy HUD Code manufactured homes, or even pre-HUDCode mobile homes.

Some companies have set up special lending for those who are undocumented.

Several manufactured home producers found out the hard way that illegal immigrants are subject to arrest and deportation. MHProNews reported exclusively on a wave of ICE raids last year that impacted mostly independent producers of manufactured housing.

So immigration is a vexing, controversy-ridden hot-button issue for the industry and the nation.

But with some of the lowest unemployment rates in the U.S. since federal record-keeping, recent polling indicates that the popularity of President Trump, and his economic plan are winning over Hispanics, blacks, women, and more independents.

The coalition that former President Barack Obama and other Democrats before him organized, is being eroded. The normal playbook that progressive leaning politicos use against conservatives and the GOP in general has not worked as well against Donald Trump as it has against several others before him.

Democrats and their Supporters Are Concerned

Chuck Todd from left-of-center NBC, whose coverage is largely anti-Trump per third party sources, said on Sunday that the president is winning. But that doesn’t mean that the left is giving up.

Those large rallies that reportedly drew hundreds of thousands nationally didn’t spontaneously organize themselves. That many people requires planning, and money.

Who’s behind it?

The Daily Business News will hereby pull back the veil, so that professionals and investors can see who are the groups behind the weekend protests curtain. Their own statements will tell an important tale.

Weekend Anti-Trump Immigration Rallies

The main rally was held in Washington, D.C., but 628 sister rallies were planned for locations in all 50 states.

“(The) family separation crisis is not over. We have a situation where the Trump administration seems to be aiming to detain families,” said Karthik Ganapathy, a spokesman, said per USA Today.

That took place even though on June 20, President Trump signed an executive order designed to stop family separations, which were a policy used to varying degrees by Presidents Bush and Obama too.

Beyond the president’s executive order, on June 26, a federal judge in California ordered immigration authorities on the border to reunite families within 30 days. So why did the rallies occur, when the predicated reason for it the are already being addressed?

What is MoveOn, and Where Did Their Money Come From?

Whether it’s supporting a candidate, passing legislation, or changing our culture, MoveOn members are committed to an inclusive and progressive future.” So says the MoveOn website.

Our rapid-response organizing and campaigning, communications interventions, digital innovation, rigorous data science and testing, and culture of grassroots participation have repeatedly combined to produce real-world impact, changing outcomes and making our country better,” according to MoveOn’s about us page.

In their short history section, MoveOn boldly states, “Since the 2016 election, we have formed a pillar of the Resistance to Trump.”

MoveOn came out big, endorsing Barack Obama before Super Tuesday in an unprecedented primary endorsement member vote,” stated MoveOn’s highlights page as of this morning.

MoveOn is strategic, and think big from the left.

In 2006, they touted their “unprecedented” mobilization efforts. “MoveOn member volunteers made 7 million phone calls, organized 7,500 house parties, and launched 6,000 in-district events.”

MoveOn led a multi-prong effort to brand the GOP as beholden to corporate special interests,” their website brags. What is interesting about that is the fact that third-party research indicates that more big corporations and big foundations are Democratic or progressive in their political and social orientation.

A list of the anti-Trump rally supporting groups involved is the weekend rallies is attached to this report, based on the organizers’ own website, and is found at this link here.  Many are reminders of a progressive organization’s “who’s who.”

In 2016, “MoveOn Political Action is in the midst of running an unprecedented campaign to draft Senator Elizabeth Warren into the presidential race.” Warren, is the left-wing firebrand that President Trump has dubbed “Pocahontas,” for her disputed claim for having Native American ancestry.

Warren was one of the driving forces behind Dodd-Frank, which former President Barack Obama championed.

Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett supported POTUS Obama’s and candidate Secretary Hillary Clinton’s position on Dodd-Frank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).  The linked reports can be read later for greater insight.

But interestingly, Warren has also come out against some of Warren Buffett’s positions, as MHProNews previously reported at this link here. Buffett supported Secretary Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Follow the Money

MoveOn was started in 1998, says FactCheck, as a defense of President Bill Clinton, who faced impeachment. Censure President Clinton and Move On to Pressing Issues Facing the Nation.”

FactCheck is supported by the “Annenberg Public Policy Center,” and other sources.

A major funder of MoveOn is billionaire George Soros, said FactCheck.

According to FactCheck, “Initial donors [to MoveOn] included billionaire George Soros, a major donor to liberal causes, who spent millions in 2004 trying unsuccessfully to defeat President Bush.”

Soros has been slammed by the Hungarian government’s Prime Minister Viktor Mihály Orbán.

Soros is a Hungarian by birth, and has supported open border policies in Europe as well as the United States. “Most recently, Soros has supported a liberal immigration policy in Europe as a response to the refugee crisis,” said the Atlantic in December of 2017.

MoveOn’sPolitical leanings: Democratic/Liberal,” stated FactCheck.

Last year, CNN reported that Soros gave a stunning $18 billion dollars to fund organizations and causes he supports.

Per CNN, “…George Soros has moved $18 billion to his foundation — the majority of his estimated $24.6 billion fortune.”

Sunday’s Mexican Elections…

Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrado, is known by the acronym, AMLO. López has tried and failed twice before to capture México’s presidency, noted the Times of Israel.

Mexican presidential candidate and Bernie Sanders doppelganger Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) declared mass immigration to the United States a “human right@realDonaldTrump to be prescient yet again in assessing the illegal immigration issue,” said Thread Reader, just days before the 2018 election yesterday of AMLO as México’s next president. That source claims Soros and his Open Society have been among those backing AMLO.

AMLO promised Mexicans to end corruption in their country, and double the Mexican minimum wage.

The Trump Administration is currently in the process of seeking to revamp the NAFTA trade agreement. The U.S. reportedly had a $71.1 billion in 2017, per the United States Trade Representative (

So with the election of AMLO, Mexico is apparently about to embrace policies that have tuned once more prosperous Venezuela into in a socialist basket-case economy in roughly a decade. Will the U.S. see even more border crossings in the days ahead, if the Mexican economy falters?

A 2009 Gallup poll found that 165 million globally would like to move to the United States. Those kinds of numbers would totally destabilize the U.S. and our economy.

While the humanitarian concerns are often rooted in a sincere desire to help those afflicted. But illegal immigration leads to human trafficking, rapes, avoidable deaths, and drugs smuggling into the U.S. the FAIR – the Federation for Immigration Reform, in data also cited by Wikipedia, said in Sept 2017 that “FAIR estimates the economic impact of illegal immigrants to be over $115 billion annually.”

The president, whose own wife – First Lady Melania Trump – is an immigrant, has said repeatedly that he is for legal immigration, but is opposed to all of the woes caused by illegal immigration. MS13 and angel parents – those who have lost children to crimes committed by illegal immigrants – are frequently by the Trump Administration as reasons for his proposed $25 billion dollar border wall.

Stage Managing News to Manipulate?

Protests are routinely followed by local, regional, or national news. So when hundreds of thousands turn out, and paint the Trump Administration as evil anti-immigrant racists, it’s clearly an effort to mobilize voters, and to tug at emotional heart-strings.

But is it working?

On June 22, UPI reported that More than half of American voters say parents are to blame when child migrants are separated from families illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, according to a Rasmussen…”

Fundraising on the left and the right are pointing to the immigration issue. While anything can happen between now and the midterms, this is the front-and-center issue in the past few weeks.

Abraham Lincoln said, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

Lincoln, America’s 16th President, also said that America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” – according to BrainyQuotes.

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t Benedict Arnold’s at work in America. Some of those who undermine America may have been immigrants to the U.S., and can we offer  the example of billionaire MoveOn backer George Soros? “We Provide, You Decide.” ©

“Never Let a Serious Crisis Go To Waste”

October 9th, 2017 Comments off

Is the Columbus Day controversy only a symptom of a deeper challenge? Why should business professionals care?

You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” – Rahm Emanuel, then President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff, currently Mayor of Chicago.

Columbus DayWar on Free Enterprise, American Culture, and the Republic?

Columbus Day is a US. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century, but did not become a federal holiday until 1937,” says History.

This memorial of Columbus wasn’t a crisis under President Barack Obama.

So why is it that now that President Donald J. Trump is in office, Columbus Day has become a part of the broader assault on American culture, history, and the U.S. Constitutional republican system?

To be sure, resistance to Columbus Day has been brewing in the U.S. for about 25 years.

But for some voices on the right, they say this anti-Columbus Day movement has more to do with Rules for Radicals than it does with the man who was long celebrated as an explorer who brought the faith and Western ways of Europeans to the New World.

Manufactured housing advocate and centrist Rev. Donald Tye Jr. said of such events that it’s a case of “divide and rule.” Tye explained that while people on the right and left are bickering of such issues, the “powers that be” are quietly advancing their agenda.

Siding With Rahm Emanuel Are…

The Rahm Emanuel quote has been stated in similar words by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and President Barack Obama.  But they didn’t invent the notion.

Rather, they based it upon the thinking of Saul Alinsky, who wrote the book Rules for Radicals, that MHProNews has previously reviewed at this link here.

The Austrian Economics Addict, uses the subtitle, Seeing the world through the lens of Austrian Economics.  That group provided the quote that will follow later below.

But to appreciate the quote, it is useful first to understand that Ludwig von Mises is considered by many to be the ‘the father’ of the Austrian school of economics.

What Did Mises and the Austrian School of Economics Believe?

According to, “The Late Scholastics were advocates of property rights and the freedom to contract and trade.” And “…they lived up to Ludwig von Mises’s rule: the first job of an economist is to tell governments what they cannot do.”

Ludwig von Mises is considered by many to be the father of the Austrian School of Economics. Milton Friedman, Thomas Sowell, and others have been influenced by his economic and political principles.

Wikipedia provides some of the better-known quotes by Von Mises:

If history could teach us anything, it would be that private property is inextricably linked with civilization.”

Peace and not war is the father of all things.”

Whoever wishes peace among peoples must fight statism.”

The attainment of the economic aims of man presupposes peace.”

To defeat the aggressors is not enough to make peace durable. The main thing is to discard the ideology that generates war.”

Modern society, based as it is on the division of labor, can be preserved only under conditions of lasting peace.”

If some peoples pretend that history or geography gives them the right to subjugate other races, nations, or peoples, there can be no peace.”

Many words and terms have had their meanings confused. There is ‘classical liberalism,’ which is actually what many conservatives today believe. When Sowell speaks about Liberalism in this context, he’s referring to those with a socialistic bent, not the classical liberal.

Whoever wants peace among nations must seek to limit the state and its influence most strictly.”

Those thoughts by von Mises would likely find wide agreement in business, and industry.  Because when crime, civil unrest, war, or revolution exists, business and people alike are routinely harmed.

Contrast the Austrian School of Thought, as Outlined Above with Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals

With that backdrop, per the Austrian Addict here’s how Rules for Radicals works: “Here is the template.

Saul Alinksy, author of Rules for Radicals, credit, Wikipedia.

1) Use a tragedy as a crisis, or create a crisis where none exists.

2) Paint the crisis with as much emotion as possible, and throw logical analysis out the window.

3) Propose the one and only solution to the problem, which just happens to coincide with what you’ve wanted to implement for many years.

4) Paint anyone who opposes your one and only solution as evil, uncaring, not smart enough to understand the nuanced brilliance of your solution, or in the pockets of …. you pick the evil entity.

5) Force the solution on the people by any means, whether legislatively, by executive order, or through the legal system.

6) When the unintended consequences of your solution rear their ugly head, use them as a reason for more brilliant solutions to made up crises.”

As industry professionals ponder “why” similar or worse conditions under previous administrations were not met with the same level “resistance” as this current admiration, these bullets may be useful.

Hillary Rodham’s master’s thesis was on Saul Alinksy, as this still from the Joe Dan video below reflects.

  • For disciples of Saul Alinsky, they want to take advantage of, or manufacturer a crisis that is used to advance their cause.
  • Alinsky was opposed to free enterprise, and the limited government concepts that America’s founding father’s established.
  • For some billionaires, supporting what appears to be a left-wing agenda is arguably a means to leverage more political and economic power, by (mis)using the power of government to enhance their earning potential.

Lessons Learned?

Christopher Columbus was an imperfect person, just like the rest of us involved in some way in American history. Columbus’ holiday has been celebrated for his courage, spirit of adventure, discovery, and more.

“Bet Your Ass Its A Revolution,” lyrics and still from Joe Dan video, below.

If the standard of keeping statues or holidays is perfection, then: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and almost any holiday, political or historic figure you care to mention is at risk.

But none of these, per Alinksy disciples, are the real issue.  These are merely excuses used to “divide and rule,” says Rev. Tye and others, as they advance their agenda.

Joe Dan Media’s Music Video Above Isn’t a Celebration of Alinksy. Rather,

the video above is a Critique of Alinksy and Those Who Follow the Alinksy Model.

Who says attacks on history, statues, culture, constitutionally protected rights, etc. are tools for Alinksy disciples to advance their cause?   Rahm Emmanuel, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama.
