Bad News Is Coming to MHVille, Again. Three Vital Stages for Manufactured Housing Professionals

The numbers for new HUD Code manufactured home shipments for January, 2019 are in.

The latest data from IBTS and HUD are sobering.  The decline that began in 2018 for new HUD Code manufactured home shipments are continuing. We’ll have a separate report with the facts.

It’s is the latest ‘wake up’ call – or alarm – for manufactured housing professionals who have had their fingers crossed.  There are those who for whatever reason want to hope, trust, close their eyes, drink, do more social media, binge on TV, or do whatever wishful thinking they chose – instead of admitting the facts, and then acting.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” – Arthur Schopenhauer, per BrainyQuote.

The Stages of Manufactured Housing Truth?

  • MHI’s Arguably Deliberately Mislead the Manufactured Housing Industry and its Professionals.
  • How so? MHProNews was alone in spotlighting the highly questionable – or deliberately misleading video – that MHI produced last fall, designed to get new members in, and get current members to renew their membership.  They spoke about “momentum.” If so, it is momentum in reverse.  Instead of explaining or defending this based on evidence, MHI instead hired an a outside attorney to threaten this publication, see that report linked here.
  • It should be obvious that when MHI had the three largest producers as members, that they could or should have known in advance what those trends would be. After all, each producer knows what they produce, precisely.  The industry finds out later.  MHProNews had heads up messages from MHI-only members as to what was coming. That’s why MHProNews raised the flag last fall, because we had reliable sources telling us what was coming.

Still from MHI Video, logos added by MHProNews.  Logically, the powers-that-be knew this was bunk when they produced it, or did they mean – momentum in reverse?  Shipments dropped in January 2019, as our upcoming report will break down the data.

2) The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) has said for years what they summarized recently in their “Illusion of Motion” report. Prior to that, they issued a detailed report about 18 months ago explaining why there had to be a new post-production trade group to represent the interests of manufactured housing independents.

  • Two state community associations broke ranks with MHI in 2017 and stated on-the-record that they did so due to MHI’s failure to represent their interests. They formed a new association in 2018, NAMHCO – the National Association of Manufactured Housing Community Owners. NAMHCO recently hired a lobbyist, so their organizational efforts are underway.
  • There’s been discussion for years about forming a new post-production association, such as the MHIdea. With all that has been revealed about Clayton-21st and the ‘Warren Buffett Strategic-Economic Moat’ strategy – coupled with dozens of reports by MHProNews – how much more evidence is needed?

If the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis – which has been routinely invited to explain our concerns, if they can – some of their actions and claims, vs. the results. They’ve been mute.  Yet, a Clayton Marketing Manager offered praise for our trade media work as a “thought leader” in the industry. Kevin Clayton, Tim Williams are among those that have praised our work in writing.  Perhaps they and their surrogates thought that we’d never catch on?

There are still MHI defenders, and we’ll share a link to one, above, and another MHIer on the record defense by an MHI board member in report from another coming soon to the Daily Business News on MHProNews. Stay tuned.

3) Clear and Pressing Need for a Post Production Association, Organizing Discussions at Tunica Show

Some are from parts of the U.S. that may not normally go to the Tunica Manufactured Housing Show, we get that fact. For those, feel free to touch base to schedule a time to chat with us by phone or via a Go-To-Meeting type discussion.

Hundreds of independents are expected at the 2019 Tunica Show, coming up later this month. Send us a message, and we’ll set a time for group or private discussions.

Contact Tony@MHMSM.com for meeting times at Tunica 2019 in March. Put the phrase, New MH Association Inquiry in the subject line. Or Call 863-213-4090.

The time to act is now. If new manufactured home shipments continue to drop, the math is sad by clear. More manufactured home independents will fail.

The Good News?

The good news is that the trends can be reversed, but only by changing course. That can be done individually or in groups see the graphic above to get set for the discussion. See the related reports, further below, to learn the troubling trends, and patterns of causation.

NIMBY Strikes Again?

February 27th, 2017 Comments off

The home in question. Credit: KTBS.

Usually, the addition of a new home to a neighborhood is greeted as something good, viewed as a benefit to the others as it could increase property values.

That’s not the case in Shreveport, Louisiana.

A manufactured home in the city’s Highland neighborhood is getting some attention from upset residents.

According to KTBS, the city investigated the property in light of the complaints, and found out the home was moved into the lot without city permits.

And residents in the Fairfield historic district, adjacent to the Highland community, are taking to social media and reaching out to the city council about the house that suddenly popped up in their neck of the woods, and appears out of place.

One of the challenges, residents say, is that it looks like a manufactured home, but based on its foundation and wooden frame it doesn’t fall into that category.

The other issue is about how it’s facing the road. Unlike other homes in the area, the home is sideways.

If I’m trying to sell a house on that block and people have to walk by this very unattractive, out of place structure– they will be less willing to pay the same price if they can buy a similar house in another neighborhood that didn’t have that problem,” said Tom Arceneaux, President of the Highland Restoration Association.

It could affect property values in the area.

After receiving a number of complaints, Councilman Jeff Everson discovered the home was moved to Shreveport from Sabine Parish in Converse, Louisiana without a permit.

But the owner, who has been unreachable for comment, told Everson that she does not acknowledge wrongdoing.

She expressed that it may not be the business of her neighbors if she had a permit or not, but it is–to be in compliance with city laws. Everyone has to do that. It’s nothing personal, said Everson.

No property can be hooked up to utilities without a city permit.

Everson says that the city’s permitting and licensing office has reached out to the responsible parties, and once the owner files for a city permit, then the city has to assess the property to make sure it doesn’t violate city zoning laws.
