Sunday Morning Manufactured Home Industry Research, Reports, Headline News Recap 5.13.2018 to 5.20.2018

Trivia – the tablet screen shot above is routinely how the MHProNews home page looked on that Sunday morning.

What does “News through the lens of factory-built housing.” © mean?

It’s a fair question asked by a reader.

You can get news anywhere.  You can get opinions anywhere.

MHProNews provides news, analysis and commentary on curated topics that are useful to the factory-built housing industry’s professionals. Dictionary says “curate” means – “select, organize, and present (online content, merchandise, information, etc.), typically using professional or expert knowledge.”

In conversations and messages with media, researchers, and others who are scoping out the industry, they may know X about their field, but they still need an expert in the manufactured housing world.

Subjects for reports on MHProNews are selected because they impact our industry in direct, or indirect ways – or a combination of both. So, those curated subjects presented in the Daily Business News, the Masthead, etc. ought to matter to manufactured housing professionals, owners and investors.  The same applies for the broader factory-built housing industry (modular, prefab, etc.)

That said:

  • But what if you don’t care about national or industry politics?
  • Or what if you don’t care about technology issues, and how that impacts MH?
  • Or what if you don’t care about marketing or sales?
  • Or what if you don’t care about legal issues?
  • Or what if you don’t care about stocks and the market reports?

First, you should.  But let’s pick just one of these – the evening market report – and ponder that for a moment to make the broader point. Let’s say for discussion sake that you don’t invest in stocks.  Should you look anyway?

Absolutely.

MHProNews has selected over a dozen manufactured home industry connected stocks across an array of products and services. Those stocks value and movements are reflected after the “closing bell.” That final graphic on the nightly market report shows you trends over the year.

Looking at that stock trend line alone has value!  It informs readers about the movements of the stocks of allies or competitors.  It also tells you broader industry tendencies, or at least how investors are viewing them as an option to consider against all others.  Also, the Daily Business News nightly market report has a feature that may indirectly relate to the market, but directly relates to other issues that are meaningful to manufactured housing.

Tops for a Reason

MHProNews is the most respected, and the most read trade publication in the industry. Some say, were are also the most “dreaded” publication in the industry, because no one wants to be caught doing- or avoiding-something they should be doing differently.

That’s fine, but none of that means we are perfect. If you see something you think is awry, please do say something.

We put out a lot of content, which we strive to be evidence-based, and factually correct. But for example, there will be some typos. Even the major media outlets have that, with all of their editors and proof writers.

In our relatively small manufactured home industry – compared to mainstream housing – being the best and striving for improvement are worthy goals.

Daily reader feedback plus third-party metrics are useful and necessary gauges on how we’re doing in serving your needs.

It’s the quality of our news, analysis, and commentary that has caused thousands to follow our twice weekly headline-news emails.  You and your colleagues can sign up for those free here or at the end of this column, below.

MSM and Industry Professionals

Some mainstream media (MSM) stories are just fine as far as insightful reports that accurately reflect some reality.  Others, not so much.

When a story is covered by mainstream media (MSM), we may select a noteworthy issue for analysis for our ever-growing audience of readers.

What you’ll find in our reports are insights that others missed, downplayed, or may have spun to fit an agenda.  Evidence-based analysis will help professionals when that occurs.

Controversial

Some have noted that we’ve become more controversial. Okay, that’s fair enough.

But it is never a case of controversy for its own sake.

The manufactured home (MH) industry must be honest with itself.

The industry faces internal and external challenges at a time that manufactured housing ought to be selling 5 to 10 times more new HUD Code home shipments.

BTW, we’re not knocking those who are cheerleaders or mouth-pieces for

  • so-called leaders who have been working for years, with
  • said ‘leaders’ being those who are spending millions of dollars annually,
  • and have failed to achieve their own claimed objectives. Sad.
  • They cheerleaders have an audience. Good for them. But the fact that their readership and engagement are far smaller than ours says a lot, doesn’t it?
  • We appear to provide more relevant, curated content in about a week than all competitors combined do in roughly a month.
  • Many subjects you will learn about only here. These last three bullets says it all.

In business, if you fail to perform, sooner or later, you’re out. Cheerleading is pleasant. But if you are a cancer patient, are you going to seek advice from the cheer-leader or from a specialist?

We “prefer to keep it positive,” as one industry blogger told us recently.  Understood.  But isn’t that like saying they’re ignoring all the troubling realities that keep the industry from growing?

Remember this quote. “If pretty pictures, great videos, or even 3D tech were all that the industry needed to thrive, then manufactured housing would be at a million new HUD Code home shipments a year, vs. hovering around a projected 100,000 new homes for 2018.”

America needs 8.3 million affordable housing units, as MHProNews has often reported.

The man who said that has also observed that “The MH industry will only achieve its goals by getting to and resolving its core issues.”  Current ‘leadership’ has arguably failed at that so badly, they won’t even publicly debate or discuss their effectiveness. That too says a lot, doesn’t it?

Cancer and Manufactured Housing

The affordable housing crisis is a cancer that costs the nation about $2 trillion dollars in lost productivity a year. Again, not knocking anyone else, but the industry learned that by reading MHProNews, not on some cheerleading blog or ezine somewhere else in HUDVille.

The only way to understand our industry’s potential – and then move responsibly toward those opportunities – is to have facts, evidence, and then look at them square in the eye.

A growing number of mainstream media and others have picked up on one of our mantras, that ‘manufactured housing is the solution for the affordable housing crisis that’s been hiding in plain sight.’

That crisis of America – and our industry – won’t be solved by doing what’s been done the same way for years.  We’re optimistic, but the optimist still grabs an umbrella when it rains.

Each article, each topic is selected to shed some light on facts, issues, or trends that can help lead manufactured housing back to its glory day levels, and beyond.

The manufactured home industry can climb to new records in a sustainable, ethical fashion.

That’s what News through the lens of factory-built housing.” © means.

What’s New on the Masthead

The Masthead

In the aftermath of last year’s Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) annual meeting, an MHI advocate metaphorically taunted MHProNews for our reporting on looming protests of their meeting. That skeptic isn’t doubting the forecast of MHAction protests any more. MHAction initially targeted the MHI annual event in Orlando last year.
