Russia Stations Modular Housing at Syrian Air Base

S. intelligence has determined that Russia is setting up an air traffic control tower and modular housing for hundreds of personnel at an air base near the Syrian Mediterranean port of Latikia.

Since Russia has requested rights to fly military cargo aircraft to the airfield, some analysts speculate that Russia may use the base to conduct air strikes against rebel opponents of its longtime Syrian ally, President Bashar al Assad. That could potentially conflict with U. S. airplanes attacking ISIS sites in Syria, as cbsnews tells MHProNews.

Other analysts suspect Russia is preparing to bring in humanitarian relief for the thousands of Syrians who have fled their homes because of the fighting.

When questioned at an economic conference, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said he continues to provide arms to Syria’s Assad, but denies any military involvement at this time. ##
