Refurbishing Factory-Built One at a Time

TheTimesNews tells MHProNews a Burlington, North Carolina man has been rebuilding manufactured homes in the neighborhood where his family has a business, which is contributing to the rebuild. Bill Mitchell established his roofing business in the 1960’s. His son, Jeff Mitchell, took over in the 1990’s and convinced the Burlington City Council to rezone lots in the neighborhood allowing him to bring in the factory-built homes to restore. He rebuilt one manufactured home at a cost of $20,000 and now rents it for $650 a month. A modular home destined for the dump by owner Lorillard Tobacco received a $90,000 makeover, and a family will occupy it next week. Another manufactured home is nearing completion. Jeff Mitchell says, “It’s good, quality housing and it’s affordable. You couldn’t build a house here and charge enough in rent to pay for it.” Mitchell Roofing Co. partner Steve Wilkerson says the work is good for the local economy, and the homes are rebuilt with strength and energy efficiency in mind. Plans are to refurbish as many factory-built homes as opportunity presents.
