In his application for a new home, a young veteran named Zahid wrote that owning his own home would mean that he would finally be able to fully provide for his family. “It’s my way of showing them my love and appreciation for everything they do to help a wounded veteran,” he said.

In 2007 at the age of 19, Zahid joined the United States Marine Corps. While stationed in Japan he was deployed to South Korea, the Philippines and Thailand. In 2010, while stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he was deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan. After four and a half years of active service, Zahid was honorably discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal.

Today, Rebuilding Together is honored to provide Zahid and his family with a brand new safe and healthy home. For 20 years, Rebuilding Together has partnered with local affiliates across the country to host Kickoff to Rebuild, a Super Bowl sanctioned event.

This year, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the event, Rebuilding Together is teaming up with NextGen Home TV to give a brand new home to a veteran in need. The home was built at International Builders Show in Las Vegas, and then transported to Phoenix for permanent placement in the Sunnyslope neighborhood this spring. Chicanos Por La Causa has donated the empty lot where the home, built by Champion Homes, will be permanently placed.

Since returning to civilian life, Zahid, his wife Stephanie and their young son Noé have enjoyed living in Arizona for the past two and a half years. Zahid is working to obtain an associate’s degree in fire science from Phoenix College. This first step will help move him forward toward the goal of becoming a fire investigator. Stephanie works in the hospitality industry and is exploring opportunities to further her career. ##
