Proposal for Rezoning to Accommodate Manufactured Homes Denied

Although Baldwin County’s planning director recommended to the planning and zoning commission and to the county commission that 1.4 acres be re-zoned from single-family to manufactured housing in far south Alabama to permit siting of seven manufactured homes, the county commissioners denied the request. AL.com tells MHProNews a small contingent of Elberta (Ala.) residents—including the manager of an adjacent MHC– opposed the request at the commissioners meeting, citing concerns about drainage, traffic and possible criminal activities. Tucker Dorsey, the Baldwin County Commission Chairman who favored the proposal, took exception to MHCs being characterized as magnets for criminals, noting there are some people who cannot afford traditional homes.
