Olympics’ Athlete’s Village could Result in Affordable Modular Housing

modular shutterstock creditIn Boston’s bid for the 2024 Olympics, Mayor Martin Walsh sees an opportunity for city planning and infrastructure improvements that need to done regardless of whether the bid goes through or not. He envisions modular housing units at the Olympic Village, which could be sited at the University of Massachusetts.

Post Olympics, the units could be moved to other parts of the city to increase the housing stock, especially for working families, who Walsh says are being squeezed by high rents, putting a damper on their finances, according to baystatebanner.

As MHProNews reported March 20, 2012, modular units used for housing athletes at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, just north of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, were recycled into living quarters for seniors and people with disabilities. Six different communities in BC were the recipients of 156 modular units now being used as affordable housing.

Ten of the units, made by Britco of Langley, BC, became libraries for First Nations communities in northern BC. ##
