Mississippi Summit Focus is on Affordable Housing

mississippi_manufactured_housing_associationThe Mississippi Regional Housing Summit will be held in Vicksburg beginning Sunday, Sept. 20 through Tue., Sept. 22 to focus on providing affordable housing in the 2nd Congressional District. With 400 people registered to attend, and the first of its kind in the state, it is drawing public officials, vendors, developers and other people involved in the housing industry or public housing.

I think this is needed, and I believe that we will be able to show people how to find ideas and avenues to meet housing issues,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said. “This idea was suggested by Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss).

The Mississippi Manufactured Housing Association (MMHA) is one of the sponsors, and will have three manufactured homes on display for participants to view, as MHProNews has learned from vicksburgpost.

In addition to Thompson, speakers will include Edward Jennings, Region IV director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Prairieview A&M University Architecture Department will give a presentation on green home construction and discuss funding programs available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Program.

What we’re doing is offering information and ideas to people and officials to help them find innovative ways to provide affordable housing in their areas,” said Vicksburg Housing Director Gertrude Young. “Affordable housing is a major need, especially in areas in the Delta where a lot of the housing is substandard. We want to show people what’s available in affordable housing and funding sources they can use.

She added that 32,000 veterans from Mississippi will be released from military service and will need affordable housing. ##
