In New York State, the Governor’s office of storm recovery (GOSR) has been hard at work assisting property owners who have been impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

According to BlackNews, the Poospatuck Reservation, the smallest reservation in the state, is one of those groups, having eight families that were in needed.

For Walter Oden, owner of Oden Development LLC, a certified manufactured home dealer and developer, he felt the need to jump in. Oden has his own experience with devastation from Hurricane Andrew in Florida in 1992. Oden assisted eight families with new manufactured homes, leveraging storm mitigation strategies to ensure survival for future storms.

Manufactured housing makes so much sense, especially here in New York,” said Oden.

Manufactured homes are typically more affordable than site-built homes. Constructing the housing structure off-site provides the inherent and economic advantages of a shorter build time, limited inspections, and energy efficiency. There is hardly any other construction method as versatile, practical, and applicable for any situation and environment.”

For Poospatuck Reservation Chief Harry Wallace, extreme gratitude was high on his list.

Those eight families selected Oden Development to rebuild their homes, ultimately because Walter has a great heart, his team cares and it shows in their craftsmanship!” said Wallace.

Oden says that he committed to replacing homes on the Poospatuck Reservation with manufactured homes as opposed to traditional stick-built homes, to expedite the speed to market. His team also has another project in Brooklyn under development, utilizing intermodal shipping containers.

Other recovery efforts in New York State involving manufactured housing include the Ba Mar Manufactured Home Community in Stony Point, New York.

In that case, limits on what can be offered and spent by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is capped, but under the new proposal, those with a family of four or more would receive up to $125,000; three people, up to $115,000; for one or two people, up to $105,000.
