MH Decal Applicants Deluge Alabama County

In a follow-up to a story we wrote Nov. 28, 2011, the DecaturDaily in Alabama reports a federal judge’s temporary restraining order prohibits county officials from verifying the residency status of persons applying for a MH license. Morgan County License Commissioner Sue Baker Roan said she processed 341 applications Nov. 28 and 29 in advance of the Nov. 30 deadline to apply, although the judge extended the restraining order until Dec. 7. Instructions from the state department of revenue read: “Until further order is received, you may not seek to verify the citizenship of alien status of applicants for manufactured home registration. You may not refuse to issue the manufactured home decal to any person because that person cannot prove his or her U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status.” Revenue commissioner Amanda Scott said, “We assess the manufactured home and the land it’s on. We do not register the homes but we issue decals. No one will be turned away based on their legal status.”
