Legislation Would Protect MHC Residents

The VCStar in Ventura, California reports the Ventura County Supervisors have endorsed a measure that protects MHC residents who sign multi-year leases. AB 1938 is scheduled for a hearing in the California State Assembly before an Assembly housing committee. The bill would require MHC operators to provide a one-page summary of all charges for leases that exceed 12 months. It would also prohibit community owners who suffer a loss from passing on costs for losses not fully covered by insurance. In addition, the 72-hour “buyers remorse,” the opportunity to rescind a long-term lease, would not begin until the resident has an executed lease from management in hand. MHProNews.com has learned the legislation is being sponsored by the Golden State Manufactured-Home Owners League. MHC owners oppose the legislation, but the popularity for long-term leases is growing among the estimated 700,000 residents of MHCs in California.
