Ireland Dealing with Severe Affordable Housing Shortage

dublin_modular_for_homeless__utv_dot_ieNoting that one third of the people in Ireland need some form of state support to buy or rent a home, Housing Minister Simon Coveney, speaking to the Housing Agency’s annual conference, said, “Affordability is the real challenge facing housing in Ireland.”

Facing a deadline at the end of July for coming up with a proposal to tackle the housing problem, Coveney said the first six months will focus on Cork and Dublin where the crisis is at its worst.

He suggested that fast-build modular housing would accommodate students who are now occupying homes that could be rented to families, according to what independent.ie tells MHProNews. Additionally, he told the conference of “a lot of large family homes that are occupied maybe by a single person now, who may be persuaded to move to a high-quality, purpose-designed accommodation in a secure location as part of a community.”

The minister also stated there are 230,000 vacant properties nationwide that could be accessed for housing while still respecting the rights of the owners, that could put a dent in the housing shortage, at least for the short term. ##
