Ice Fish Houses Scale Up

StarTribune reports ice fishing accommodations have moved well beyond the unheated wood shacks set over a hole in the ice that you see in old movies. Displays at the St. Paul Ice Fishing and Winter Sports Show in St. Paul, Minnesota, include factory-built ice cabins as big as a small manufactured home, and outfitted with similar amenities. Forest River, in Indiana, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Co., builds the Salem Ice Cabin that ranges from 14 to 20 feet with a price tag of $11,000 to $16,500. Ice Castle Fish Houses Manufacturing, the largest producer of ice homes, will custom design and outfit your fish house to order, up to 24 feet long. These cabins are towed by another vehicle, much like a pre-HUD Code home or recreational vehicle (RV), but they can include satellite TV, bay windows, and luxurious interiors. Retractable wheels lend increased appearance of manufactured housing.
