Green Building is Growing

green_building__modularhomecoach__creditDespite the cost of building/remodeling green as a potential barrier, a high percentage of home builders and remodelers are already building green and expect the trend to continue, according to modularhomecoach, noting it is not the Millennials driving the market but the 55 and older group. Consumers’ association with green building as healthier and better for the environment will continue to power the trend.

A study that surveyed 232 builders and remodelers across the country revealed that 54 percent of builders are currently constructing at least 16 percent of their homes as green. 39 percent of remodelers say 16 percent of their projects are green.

The 2015 Dodge Data and Analytics study also reports that by 2020, 51 percent of home builders expect to build at least 60 percent of their homes green.

Remodelers anticipate by 2020, nearly three-fourths of them will be making at least 16 percent of their projects green, and 36 percent will complete over 60 percent of their work as green. 83 percent of builders and remodelers believe consumers will be willing to pay for healthier homes.

Another factor that will lead to a growing green market is the increasing use of renewable technologies that can save consumers energy costs. The study also indicates that by 2018, almost half of builders and remodelers anticipate using solar panels and ground source heat pump technologies. According to the study, over 20 percent of home builders have constructed a net zero home within the last two years, as MHProNews understands.

Further, while the older crowd is currently reaching for green alternatives in remodeling and building, as the environmentally-conscious Millennials age and accumulate resources, they will most likely lead the move to green methods of construction and renewable resources. ##
