Documents Reveal Major Problems at Large NYC Modular Project

forest_city_ratner_brooklyn_b2_tower_city_limitsFollowing a story MHProNews last published April 10, 2015 regarding the continuing hit-and-miss saga of Forest City Ratner’s 34-story modular tower at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, B2, curbed.ny reports a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request reveals there was considerable water damage in April and July, 2014.

However, problems with stacking the units accurately began right after siting the 930 units started in 2013, according to consultant STV, which filed reports with the Empire State Development (ESD), the state agency overseeing the entire project. Workers reported they had to shave drywall in order to squeeze in the dry wall and then caulk. Evidently the stress of stacked modulars was causing them to be misaligned.

But the water filled a rain barrel on the third floor following a very rainy weekend April 4, 2014. On July 2, 2014 again after a heavy storm workers had to rip out the ceilings and walls of one sixth-floor unit, leaving the contractor perplexed about how water got into the building. By August 1, 2014, all the floors from two through eight have suffered considerable water damage.

The FOIL documents end in September of that year when Forest City and Skanska sued each other, and Forest City bought Skanska out. The project is far behind the original schedule—it was supposed to be completed a year ago—and is now currently scheduled for completion sometime next year. ##
