Bill would Expand Siting of Manufactured Housing

A bill introduced in the North Carolina legislature would bar counties from enforcing laws that exclude manufactured housing from residential areas with other single-family homes, according to citizentimes of Asheville. State Rep. Nathan Ramsey, Republican from Buncombe County, informs MHProNews, “Everyone knows affordable housing is a problem in Western North Carolina. It’s a response to so many people out there who own a piece of land, and the government says they can’t put a home they can afford on their land.” The measure would not apply to historic districts. Under current zoning ordinances manufactured housing is prohibited in ten percent of Buncombe County. David Gantt, chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, says “I think you always have the affordable housing versus the local control of what neighborhoods should look like.
