Today’s MH Market Spotlight Report –

PaulManifortGuiltyButNoRussiaNoCampaignConnectionCohenPleadsPLUSMHMarketUpdates

The best quote to consider with respect to long-time, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen may have come from Judge Ellis in the Paul Manafort case. Ellis observed that when federal prosecutors squeeze a witness, they hope that person will flip, and “will not only sing but “compose…” Meaning, some will then give testimony that they hope will help them, even if that testimony is ‘composed’ – made up.

The jury’s findings in the Paul Manafort case has nothing to do with the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump.  Nor is there any connection between the Trump team and Russia as a result of this verdict. It’s a tax fraud case, that predates the election by a decade.  There should be no connection construed by that finding.  If anything, that ruling might give investors more confidence.

The Michael Cohen plea is potentially different.  The claim there is that a campaign finance law was violated. Unless Cohen has a tape recording that makes it clear that the president ordered a violation of campaign finance laws, anything less than that makes this a Cohen said vs. the President said.

Cohen has been all over the map in his statements, at first defending the president, saying he was unaware of any payments. Later, Cohen turned on him. That too would appear to be a problem for any conceivable attempted prosecution of the 45th president.

So, is this a nothing burger?

Frankly, no.

The stronger challenge for the president and his supporters in this ruling is the following. This is the closest thing that Democrats have to a smoking gun of anything potentially illegal done by the president. There’s been alleged no Russian collusion proven. As MHProNews reported several times last year and this, “collusion” isn’t even a crime in federal law.

So, the upshot is that this could well become a rallying cry for both the GOP and Democrats in the midterms.

Democrats will likely have in mind to retake the House, and try to vote to impeach President Trump, using this Cohen plea as a part of their pretext.  The president’s supporters will have every reason to turn out and vote for those who will keep that from happening.

So, this becomes a midterm issue for voters to decide.  Somewhat related reports are linked below.
