Manufactured Homes Used as Temporary Quarters for Caregivers

temporary-housing-in-yard-of-relativeThe Nash County Board of Commissioners in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, is considering modification of an ordinance relating to temporary hardship manufactured homes.

Presently, the Nash County Unified Development Ordinance provides for a temporary accessory residence with a special use permit from the Board of Adjustment to be installed for instances where a household member needs extra care due to disability or frailty.  However, the present ordinance requires that the family member needing assistance must be the one to live in the temporary residence.

Nash County Planning Director Nancy Nixon said the county has recently received requests for an impaired person to be allowed to place a temporary hardship manufactured home on their property for a family member to occupy while providing help to someone living in the principal home.  “For example, this would allow a grandchild and the family to occupy a single wide in the grandparents’ yard and provide care, while the grandparents stay in their own home,” Nixon explained.

The Rocky Mount Telegram tells MHProNews that the board will decide whether to adopt the proposed amendment at its next meeting.  ##
